fuck i want a list

MBV is great news. As is Yeah Yeah Yeah s and Leonard Cohen. Not thrilled with the other subs, really.

And Cure is a letdown, bigtime. Hopefully there's a nice Sahara performer.

01-29-2009, 11:24 PM
This is awesome. Another icon that re-shaped the world of music. Most people on here won't be that happy but to me this is what Coachella is about. Somebody I would never go see on my own. Can't wait.

And having the Cure there rather than Neil Young sort of sucks.

So is McCartney going to get a full set? That is an insanely stacked day.

On a Friday? Really?

zikade
01-29-2009, 11:44 PM
the more I think about it, why is McCartney not closing the festival? Having a Coachella "Hey Jude" sing-a-long the first night is gonna make everything else seem anticlimactic.

Meh, I think I'll buy the Sunday ticket just to see The Cure as they are one of the greatest live bands on the planet, but the rest of the lineup is a little dull. Wouldn't mind seeing Paul McCartney, Hercules & Love Affair, and see if Amy Winehouse actually shows up or the hot mess her performance will be if she is there.

Most underwhelming coachella lineup iv seen. Nearly all the fakes were better!

*total backlash*

well there you have it, rationally and calmly. The sahara looks shit/vacant. Theres a distinct lack of a saturday headliner. The 'killer undercard' most talked of.. isnt killer at all. And the headliners are shit which begs the question what the fuck have they been waiting for all this time. I know there's gonna be alot of this going on shortly just like last year. But it's weak, real weak!

Why do they bother asking us who we want everyyear and then give us none of it.

M Sparks
01-30-2009, 03:35 AM
SIGH...well, at first glance, I was relieved. There's a 90% chance I can't go this year, and I was really worried about seeing Bowie or The Smiths on there, because it would just kill me to miss that. If I WERE going, I would have a great time with this lineup, but there's nothing that's going to taunt me if I don't make it.

But then I see stuff like Leonard Cohen, MBV, & Throbbing Gristle and get sad again. I've never seen Bob Mould in any capacity. Hell, I've never even seen Morrissey. I live in a place where I have to drive a long distance to see ANY concert, so I only wind up seeing my absolute favorites. I'm never going to see X or Paul Weller or Crystal Method unless I see them at a festival. Not to mention the dozen or so bands on this list that I've never heard of, but I would be raving about come April 20th.

I can see why people might be disappointed in this lineup, but does anyone ever have a bad time at Coachella? If you have the option to go, you should have already made up your mind before this appeared. Count your blessings, because percentage-wise, very few people in this world get to experience it.

agreed that i've never had a bad time at coachella but this lineup is especially weak...

what happened to the Sahara?!? Paul must be listening to some uber-underground acts these days cause i've barely heard of anyone....

Cohen is cool but i'm skeptical about how enjoyable his set is going to be in a festival setting - I find these sets need a bit more 'pep' than he's likely to deliver...The Cure was probably one of the most disappointing shows i've seen in Coachella history, and I'm a huge fan of theirs...Amy Wino on line 2???? what has she done since last time she played besides adding trackmarks and 30 years to her liver? brutal....

on the positive side: yay for YYYs, Okerville River, Franz, and errr ya.....

OMFG - i just saw Billy Talent on the list too...way to fucking grab one of Canada's worst bands....ugh

I didn't think of that...I'm not a Sahara guy, but I was psyched for some of the Chemical Bros/Prodigy/other big name rumors.

I can see why the people who live in the Sahara all weekend would be pissed.

I always count on one or two big Sahara acts to get the dancing out of my system and avoid a shitty main-stage headliner but I don't really see anyone here that's going to fill that role....

please god, give us some additions....

For those of you complaining about Saturday, and also for those complaining about the lack of electronic music:

MSTRKRFT is one of the best electro-house acts out there; Crookers will put on an unbelievable show, and the Bloody Beetroots were one of the biggest up and comers in electronic music this past year. All three will blow your mind, so dont hate!

Yeah this is probably the worst lineup I've seen in years for anything. However, I know it will change and there will be awesome additions and I'm going either way because, as someone else said, you don't have a bad time at Coachella.

However, all of that anticipation was totally wasted. What the hell could've been holding up that crapfest of headliners, Brandon Flowers demanding more green m&ms?

Some thoughts.

Overall - this line up is very 05 to me, just ok... but the inclusion of Sir Paul, Weller, and Cohen are huge. Such great acts!

Big disappointment is no Prodigy, Jaxx, Underworld, or Chemicals, MSTRKFT are very good, so that will have to do. I hate the Crystal Method.

Too bad MBV really happened last year for some, that has lost a little luster, but no biggie.

Am I the only one who thinks Winehouse might not show up - I think it's a gamble to put her there on Saturday... or anywhere.

The Killers are NOT a headliner. Sorry.

Conor Oberst should not be the 5th act on Friday - weak. Same with Beirut being 6th.

Lupe Fiasco being 4th on Friday? This puzzles me, maybe he's bigger in LA?

Some weird talkers like Zane Lowe (BBC1), and Shep Fairey too? Rollins is good though.

Billy Talent will be this years Thursday, they are dreadful.

Patton and Rahzel will be very cool.

Top 4 on Friday is a really great lineup... Franz meets the older wiser guys.

Expect Antony to do the song Blind with Hercules on Saturday - that will be a kickin good time.

Travis DJam - zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz, paleaze.

Strange the see The Horrors got called back, I thought their time was looooong gone.

Ok but including the other nights, Crystal method, the presets, switch (fucking switch!), steve aoki (whatever you want to say about him he puts on a hell of a show) will all be awesome. Ya i agree they arent all huge names yet, but many are on their way.

my only problem with all of this is, who wants to go to a face-melting electronic show at 9pm?

Guys, the lineup is pretty fucking great. At first glance it doesn't seem like it is but Friday and Saturday are STACKED with a great undercard. Does need more Sahara acts though.

Franz, Leonard Cohen, Black Keys, girl Talk, SSPU, Crystal Method, We Are Scientists, Presets, Hold Steady, Felix, White Lies (eh),

Thievery, TVOTR, Band of horses, Fleet Foxes, MSTRKRFT, Frani, Atmosphere, Mastodon, Rollins, Turbonegro, Hurcules, Drive By Truckers, Calexico, Liars, Blitzen Trapper,

sunday could use some oomph.

Everything I say is quite calm my friend - having been to every single Coachella except last year... I think I have a good handle on the strentgh or weakness of a line-up.

Sir Paul is awesome as The Killers are shitty in terms of headliners. Deal with that.

I don't think so. But if you are trying to read tone on a message board, then you might be the one being an asshole.

I'm tired of people coming in here for a few days telling me how to feel about a festival I'm rather close to. People that prolly haven't been or won't go.

im thinking there will be a big name signed for saturday moving the killers to a subheadliner... if this happens its gonna be a pretty awesome time... it will be even if it doesn't happen however

Saturday is pretty strong. And they will definitely have additions. Or at least they better. But I still think that I'll be going to Bonnaroo instead. This line up so obviously screams, "my budget was cut and I needed some bargains." Amy Winehouse, The Cure, and the Killers? Give me a break. Seriously.
The thing that kills me the most is that I, like a huge chunk of people who go to Coachella, live in Southern California. I'll have the chance to see almost every band that they booked in a small venue before the festival. What has always made Coachella great is headliners who make me say, "I'm going no matter what." Those headliners and subheadliners are supported by a cast of great bands and I/we have a great time. It appears they forgot about this huge demographic.

I'm super-duper pumped for Sunday, and Friday looks solid, but Saturday will be a bit dull. I'm fully expecting them to add a late headliner though, so no worries here. See you in April!!

I'm sorry if this has been answered, by I can't find out right now if all of the tickets are GA or if there are seats. The seating chart on TM shows seats, but I want to know what to expect before 9am. Thanks!

I really hope a Crystal Method doesnt close the sahara with a live set cause it would probably conflict with Paul McCartney :(

Brandon Flowers must look at that poster, see himself between Macca and the Cure and scratch his head trying to remember just when it was he sold his soul.

Killers=Portishead (placeholder headliner; maybe Moz sticks around and the other three show up to close out Saturday)

So is McCartney going to get a full set? That is an insanely stacked day.

On a Friday? Really?

I feel the same way. I am going to be pissed if I have any conflicts with McCartney, NASA, Patton and Rahzel, and Girl Talk

the weakest line up in years obviously. but i will go as always and looking forward to
beirut
leonard cohen
amy winehouse
my bloody valentine
antony & the johnsons

very very weak on the dance/electronic music
i am expecting some electro confirmations in the weeks to come

That's fine by me, I only go to the Sahara when no other decent options are available, from a indie rock/alt-country standpoint, this is a way stronger line-up than last year's.

Okkervil was a total surprise, as was Beruit...both among my favorite acts of the decade.

I never cared about the lineup, I just came here for the companionship. Get so lonely at night and during the day. Can't get ahold of my Mother.

But seriously, I'm thinking about attending a 'Friday' for the first time (first time see Father naked). Mainly for Cohen.

The ONE major bright spot on the lineup:

Amy Winehouse will show Elder Flowers how to party like a rock star!

never heard of Throbbing Gristle, Sahara Sunday headliner... like what i'm hearing... glad that Industrial thread paid off, sounds like an industrial Aphex meets The Doors, or something...

who the FUCK is Sahara headliner Friday, Crystal Method four lines down?? (i don't see Girl Talk necessarily being in the Sahara)

i like the lineup, and im FOR SURE going, but i expect quite a few late adds...

Thobbing Gristle is fucking brilliant -- I have no idea what they'll do, but they are legendary. More Elle S. Dee, than Rollins, if you get it...

Killers=Portishead (placeholder headliner; maybe Moz sticks around and the other three show up to close out Saturday)

Are you seriously comparing a performance by The Killers to something as big as the only Portishead reunion show in the US after a 10 year hiatus?

Saturday is pretty strong. And they will definitely have additions. Or at least they better. But I still think that I'll be going to Bonnaroo instead. This line up so obviously screams, "my budget was cut and I needed some bargains." Amy Winehouse, The Cure, and the Killers? Give me a break. Seriously.

Those headliners and subheadliners are supported by a cast of great bands and I/we have a great time. It appears they forgot about this huge demographic.

But strong headliners aren't necessarily what Coachella is made of. Coachella is a unique experience that turns out amazing every year regardless of who's headlining. Trust me, it doesn't compare in any way to seeing those bands in small venues.

I personally think the lineup is pretty solid, even if the headliners aren't that strong. That list of names right underneath the headliners? AMAZING.

pretty much true.

small venues for 90% of those acts trump every time.

Ok, this lineup COULD be awesome. Just like last year, the intial lineup is meh, but with the addition of a great saturday headliner (like Prince last year) and a great sahara act (like Aphex Twin last year) the line-up could be amazing.
