What is the best concert that you've ever been to? And what made that concert so great?

I saw Radiohead when they were touring for "hail to the thief" which was obviously amazing!

One of my favorites would have to be the time I saw Sufjan Stevens at an old cathedral in Vancouver. It was the perfect venue. People were actually listening. No drunken cheers. No premature clapping. And the acoustics were really good. All in all made for a great concert.

Top three are:
1) Crosby, Stills, and Nash - Vancouver 2003 (lots of herbal remedy!)
2) Einsturzende Neubauten - Also Vancouver 2005 (?)
3) Coachella in 2001 (not technically a concert, but who cares?)

First time I saw Dead Can Dance live, no question. What made it great? Hmm.. this was when Brendan and Lisa *didn't* hate each others guts, and the supporting musicians (about 7 of them) were all of the utmost quality. The whole show was absolutely transcendent.

A close second would be the moment in Nine Inch Nails "The Fragile" tour where, during "Wish", the huge rectangular lighting rigs that were above the band, began to slowly drop down and move behind the band, then began to light up, blasting the huge rigs of light plus massive LED screens of color directly at the audience as Trent & Co built that furious song to it's crescendo... it was like standing into a freaking hurricane of light and sound.

King Crimson, Oberlin College - recently reformed (at the time c. 1982?) with Adrian Belew. There was so much energy between the crowd and the band that they ran out of songs to play for an encore - so they just started again from the top because no one would leave.

The White Stripes--November 28, 2003 @ the Masonic Temple in Detroit. My wife, who absolutely hated them until the show, said it was the best concert that she'd ever seen.
They just flat out rocked that night. The Mrs. said there was a ton of sexual tension between the two of them, but that was just too much for me to process....In this case, too, touring behind a good album helped make the show more entertaining.

I saw Editors with Cold War Kids in August, which was pretty amazing. CWK proved that the hype is completely justified, and Editors transcended all the weak Joy Division/Interpol comparisons. An unbelievable show.

Sigur Ros - 8/11/05 @ The Avalon

Coldplay @ The 9:30 Club in the warzone of D.C. wayyy back in 2002 (shut up)

This is acceptable, Rush of Blood was a really good album so only hearing songs from the first 2 records in a small club is awesome... I was at that show too but still think my other choice was better for sigur ros.

Just a short list of the heavy hitters, I think everyone could bust out big bands in small places....

Radiohead - Night 2 of Berkeley 2006(best of the 6 hands down)
Daft Punk - Coachella
Nine Inch Nails - Key Club Morongo 2006
Pixies - The Warfield 2005 (late show)
Sigur Ros - Wiltern 2002 night 1 (4th row seat cant beat that)

Hrmmm.. Legendary Pink Dots at Slims in SF in 2000 -- they are incredible performers and the crowd that night was really mellow and fun to be around. Dead Voices on Air was a good choice for an opener.

Momus shows in 2001 in support of Folktronic at bottom of the hill in Sf, omg I love that album. All the live performances I saw were great.

Actually, I think most of the shows I saw at great american and bottom of the hill in 2000-2001 were brilliant.

Pearl Jam @ MSG night 1 in 2003 or Randall's Island night 2 in 1996

MSG night 1 was ridiculous with the energy and the crowd was amazing. when you have 4000 fan club members and 4000 of their friends at one show...it turns into something awesome.

Randall's Island night 2 was awesome due to the setlist:
09/29/96 - Downing Stadium (Randall's Island): New York, NY [168m]
attendance: 30,000
support act: Ben Harper, The Fastbacks
set: Sometimes, Go, Spin the Black Circle, Hail Hail, Animal, Tremor Christ, Who You Are, Corduroy, Lukin, Better Man, Not for You, Jeremy (new), Once, Rats, Last Exit, Habit, Rearviewmirror, Immortality, Whipping, I Got Shit, Black, Alive, Porch
enc 1: In My Tree, Even Flow, Daughter/(The Real Me)/(ABitW)/(WMA), Mankind, Long Road, Leaving Here
enc 2: Off He Goes, Present Tense, Yellow Ledbetter
notes: A nearly three-hour show with a raging pit. The band stops playing several times in an effort to get the crowd to settle down. During 'Porch,' Ed duct-tapes his *entire* body and jumps into the pit. (Thought we'd never see that again!) Just before the first encore, someone throws an "Eddie Vedder for President" t-shirt up on stage. Ed looks at it and says, "Well I'll tell you the truth ... I smoke pot! I didn't exhale though!" Stone asks for a chant of "Stone, Stone, Stone!" before singing 'Mankind.' During the encore, Mike starts playing 'Yellow Ledbetter' after 'Leaving Here,' Ed stops him and they go into 'Off He Goes' followed by 'Present Tense!' Incredible setlist.

How do you all remember dates, so damn well?

It's amazing how live music in essence can change you. My most memorable shows in no particular order and with dates and places included only when significant or remembered.

Guns 'N Roses @ The Forum '90
No Doubt - a free show at a local mall '90
Moby @ Columbia University's "Reality Fest" '91
Lollapalooza @ Irvine Meadows '91 (we snuck in 2 of the 3 nights)
RHCP with Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, and Pearl Jam '91
Ray Charles @ The Blue Note '92
Glastonbury '94 (don't remember a whole lot, but it was awesome)

This is where things start to run together as far as dates - sorry, but they fall anywhere between '92 and 2006
Green Day
Jamiroquai
Fishbone with NOFX (fell in the mosh pit and was rescued by Vernon Reid)
James Taylor (brought tears to my eyes)

I used to live within walking distance, and moved before it closed -- my last show there was the last day I lived in Ohio (sleater-kinney, the bangs, the gossip). I didn't even know they closed and reopened until a few months ago. The new one looks too clean on the outside. :rolleyes

Metallica- amazing live
Eminem/Anger Management tour- I was on the rail in the very front. i dont even really like rap music, but i saw Xzibit, Luda, Eminem, and Papa Roach. i think i was the only person there who knew who Papa Roach was....oh yea they are really good live too. i saw Papa Roach at this little club in front on like 100 people. it was absolutley amazing becasue how little the place was!
Slipknot- they are just fun to watch live....INSANE
Marilyn Manson- very surreal to see him in person...
Project Rev. Tour feat. Linkin Park, Snoop, The Used, and Less Than Jake. you can hate Linkin Park, but that band has as much if not more talent than any other band around. they are all amazing musicians, and amazing live!
i listen to mostly hardcore and metal. i used to listen to alot of rock like the shit i mentioned and i have seen SO SO SO many concerts. its all i do ........but I havent seen Rage so thats why i am coming to Coachella. Chili Peppers are just an added bonus for me.

This is very telling.

This is the reason for all the RAGE backlash, as evident here, most Rage fans have HORRIBLE narrow-minded taste in music. hence buying only one day of Coachella. Linkin Park, The Used, AFI, Papa Roach and Less Than Jake are all terrible!

[1]: From their second co-headlining tour, the one cut short because Billy "fell ill" (and subsequently "fell" into "rehab"). They were able to play their Philly date before it fell apart and were, IMO, consummate performers/professionals.

[2]: If you're an obsessive Tool fan who has or knows about a bootleg video with them playing Opiate and Undertow songs on a really small stage in a really small club to a really small crowd with a really big neon "D" behind them... yeah, that show.

Dizzee Rascal in 2005
Pixies/Violent Femmes @ Red Rocks in 2005 (Red Rocks is always unique, but this was even more so)
Foozer (Foo Fighters w/ Weezer) in 2005
People Under the Stairs in 2005
Franz Ferdinand @ 2006 Coachella (Was I the only one who was completely loving how bonkers everyone went for Take Me Out?)
DeVotchKa/Andrew Bird this past New Year's Eve
My Morning Jacket this year on January 13. They did two nights, the first was kinda weak for MMJ (still good nonetheless). Second night was amazing.

There's something to be said about when you can see a good opener with the main act. When they build upon each other's wonderful performances, it's completely euphoric. That's why I loved Foozer, Pixies/Femmes, Devotchka/Andrew Bird and Area 2 so much, and that's why Coachella is the greatest experience in the world.

So awesome...I was at both nights of the MSG shows and they were the greatest shows I have ever been to...EVER!

Lemme think...

Well, the Dresden Dolls solo show was fucking spectacular, even when the lights fizzled out during "The Jeep Song" and Amanda switched around some of the lyrics, like "I wish they'd turn the-fucking-lights-back-onnnnnn!!" and the band that opened for them, the Red Paintings were fucking spectacular, hopefully those aussies will get some more recognition.

But yeah, lemme think... Weird Al Yankovic was a spectacle, and the Mates of State/Spoon/Death Cab for Cutie show on the Embarcadero with my significant other was truly awe-inspiring...

Although I have to say that seeing Megadeath and Fear Factory live was pretty badass [How's that for breadth? Mates of State and Megadeath in the span of a year, lol]

This is very telling.

This is the reason for all the RAGE backlash, as evident here, most Rage fans have HORRIBLE narrow-minded taste in music. hence buying only one day of Coachella. Linkin Park, The Used, AFI, Papa Roach and Less Than Jake are all terrible!

yea sorry everyone's taste in music cant fit your style, jackass. im sure i think alot of the music you listen is terrible also, but its an opinion and everbodys got one. oh yea, and i bought 3 day pass, not just a one day.

Man, I hope I was referring to the right show. It may have been in 2000, not 1999. Either way, we got there and the lot was very active. Free parking too! I found everything I was looking for :winkiss

I never had the pleasure of seeing Phish farther east than Las Vegas. I'm sure there were some epic shows out there. I was always way more into the deep grooves they'd find there way into rather than jumping around and singing along sort of stuff. Just my thing.

I'll put it this way...
my ideal Phish show would include
1. no grand piano (only funky analog synth stuff and old keyboards)
2. no soaring guitar solos
3. no cymbals, just high-hat
4. lots of fun pedals for Gordon

i saw it at Irvine Meadows. One of the more memorable shows in my life because it was the first time i heard Bjork live. i didn't see it coming, but when she sang, hair raised on the goosebumps.

my friend and i met Peter Hook outside the beer line. He was just standing there. No one recognized him til we did. Gave him props and he said "thanks". We had pit tickets and earned our deafness right in front of one of the finest bass players in the world.

PIL was great. Friend was determined to spit on Mr. Lydon. He did multiple times. Hey, i'm not his mama. i can't tell him what to do and no do.

1. Pearl Jam, The Forum (Night 1), 2006. Great atmosphere, great crowd, fucking amazing band. Don't know if anything can ever top the goosebumps that formed as the opening chords of "Release" started the show. I thought I'd never hear that song live, but I did that night.

2. Pearl Jam, Santa Barbara Bowl, 2006. Same tour, completely different atmosphere, songs, and crowd. Started with a full near-acoustic set highlighted by "Oceans" as a the perfect opener, and some real rarities ("Waiting on a Friend," "Hard to Imagine"). Next set was electric, and began with Pink Floyd's "Interstellar Overdrive." Encore included a kick-ass version of Neil Young's "Rockin' in the Free World." Almost 3 total hours of mind-blowing music just off the Pacific Ocean on a beautiful summer's night...doesn't get much better than that.

3. Jeff Tweedy, Fonda Theatre, 2006. He is an amazing solo performer. I had seen Wilco many times before, but honestly was more enraptured by Tweedy's solo show. He is not given enough credit for his lyrical and technical genius.

4. R.E.M., The Avalon (small club), 2003(?). Kind of a celebration show for the release of the best-of album. Never thought I'd see them in such a small venue, plus they broke out a lot of old songs/rarities. Amazing experience.

5. David Gray, Shrine Auditorium, 2003. David has been amazing EVERY time I have seen him, but if I had to choose one, this was the best. He's an amazing performer, and a true hidden treasure.

6. Radiohead, Hollywood Bowl, 2003. The band was completely on that night. I fell in love with a lot of songs for the first time that night -- particularly The Gloaming. Awesome.

7. NIN, Verizon Wireless, 2006. Nine Inch Nails are simply a great live band. Everything was in-your-face and simply brilliant.

8. Fiona Apple / Damien Rice, Greek Theatre, 2006. Fiona is a beautiful woman with an amazing voice...she completely blew me away.

9. Live, Fonda Theatre, 2006. Okay, so Live is admittedly a band past their prime, but they still put on a great show. The fans were rabid on this night, and the venue was tiny, which made it particularly great.

Smashing Pumpkins
April 10, 1999
St. Andrews Hall - Detroit, MI

First show with Jimmy Chamberlain back in the band after being kicked out in 1996 following the drug issue. No album to support...best setlist of all-time with songs being played that hadn't been played in years plus new tunes that had never been played before. Absolutely insane crowd. Unbelievable still to this day.

AFI in 99. that was way before they got shitty. ive listenend to them since i was like 10. it was so amazing. i cant even describe it. but after Coachella is over Rage will be the best concert ever becasue they are amazing.

I saw AFI in 99 and it was, to this day, the 2nd worst show I've ever payed for. They are fucking brutal live. I went because I listened to them when I was younger, but after that show, I listen to like 3 songs at home and went "What the fuck was I thinking?" Haven't listened to an AFI song since. Just pure pop filth.

Project Rev. Tour feat. Linkin Park, Snoop, The Used, and Less Than Jake. you can hate Linkin Park, but that band has as much if not more talent than any other band around. they are all amazing musicians, and amazing live!

Just wow...

I would just like to state that this man does not represent the Rage Against the Machine fanbase. Anyway, enough with the negativity. Let's see if I can actually rank these shows (and remember them all, I'm at work so I don't have my wad of ticket stubs.)

1. Pearl Jam - Winnipeg/2005 - Unreal show. Opened with the best version of Betterman I have ever heard. The crowd was absolutely insane from start to finish. Supersuckers opened, which was cool.

2. The Pixies - Winnipeg/2004 - Up there not so much for the quality of the show, but simply because I was seeing the goddamn Pixies!!! That was supposed to be the first reunion show, but they played a "secret" show in St. Paul the night before. Opening with Neil Young's Winterlong was a nice touch in Winnipeg.

3. Queens of the Stone Age - Winnipeg/2005 - Fantastic show. One day after a cancelled show due to Josh Homme having the flu. He talked early in the show about how he had spent the entire day drinking codine loaded cough syrup. Started off a little shakey but after about 3 songs in, just tore through an amazing show. I Think I Lost My Headache as the closer was easily the highlight. Throw Rag is still to this day, one of the best opening acts I've ever seen.

4. Pearl Jam/Tom Petty - 2006/St. Paul x2 - The only thing that could have made these shows better would have been if Pearl Jam still got to play for like 3 hours, even though the opened. Plus Ed's microphone didnt work when he came out to sing The Waiting with Tom Petty. That kinda sucked. Overall, two great shows.

5. Bad Religion/Dropkick Murphys 2006/Winnipeg - Who knew punk shows worked in arenas? They managed to configure the MTS Centre (usually 15,000 seats) to hold about 5,000 and seem much, much smaller. A huge, half empty arena could have ruined the environment for this show, but didn't. Best DKM performance I've seen out of the 3 I've taken in. Also an amazing Bad Religion set. No album to tour behind = lots of older stuff. The acoustic God Song was pretty cool.

Honourable Mentions - Foo Fighters, Sloan, Velvet Revelver (yeah I know, I was surprised), DFA1979, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, Mars Volta and the Headstones.

I'm seeing Eric Clapton for the first time in two days, so that could make it's way onto the list.

Now lets list the worst. I'll just list the worst of the bands I actually wanted to see, I've seen too many shitty opening acts to name them all.

1. Smashing Pumpkins - 2000 - Sooooooo boring. I was really looking forward to seeing them, but instead of a nice career retrospective, we were treated to 3 non Adore or Machina songs. Fuck You was sweet and thats about where it ended.

2. The Who (The Two) - 2006 - Lot's of factors went into making this one bad. First, well, a crappy performance. Nice to hear some songs that I'd never hear otherwise, but Roger Daltry's voice is shite now. Behind Blue Eyes was brutal. Wire & Glass, that new "mini-rock opera" they put out was agonizing. Plus, I had payed 80 bucks for the farthest ticket in the building. I left feeling very cheated.

3. Green Day - 2005 - Went for the nostalgia. Biiiiiiig mistake. I actually heard a kid behind me ask what Dookie was when the album was mentioned. Just an awful show. I had seen them in '99 at it wasnt too bad. Any band that tries to pull off the punk rock thing should not have backup musicians. Closing with Good Ridance was stupid. No When I Come Around or Welcome to Paradise. What the fuck?!?

4. AFI - 1999 - See Green Day...

5. Thankfully, I can't think of anyone else that disappointed me that much, so here's some of the shitty openers I've seen; Three Days Grace, Inward Eye, Thornley, The Trews, Harlequin (yes, Superstitious Feeling sucks live, too), some band called Ham that opened for the Pixies, Pigmy Love Circus (too much dick flashing/flapping for my tastes), Sum 41, Treble Charger and hundreds more...

Seriously, it was amazing. Even his band, New Power Generation, were as jaw-dropping as the man himself. He played a lot from his Musicology album, but he definitely gave the crowd a lot from Purple Rain thru The Sign o the Times album.

How about Prince in 1984? That was fucking awesome.

Amen. i saw 2 shows at the Forum and one in Long Beach in one week of ninteen hundred and eighty five. From the rafters to the front row, one of the most phenomenal music weeks in my time here on this thing called Earth.

Musicology tour was right up there as being one of the best Prince (and therefore best overall) shows. Saw it at the Pond and Staples, with the edge going to the Pond show:

(no need to read this, but felt like putting the first blog i wrote on myspace because a friend was complaining how no one blogged but her)

OK...i'll write something....Prince is a Genius.

So i still have a ringing in my ears from serious sonic abuse over the past couple of days. Monday i went to see Prince at the Anaheim Pond with the girl i went to see Prince with during the Purple Rain tour (2 out of the three times i saw it that week). Hiro (the girl) is a member of the fan club, so she got tickets through them. A couple of months ago she told me we would be in the first 15 rows (Yes!)...we would not know exactly where until picking up the tickets at will call. When she did, Hiro slid out the tickets and put out a big "Oh My God!" Front fucking row!!!

Now this is a show in the neck of the woods in which i was raised. Hiro and i walked in the show a song late due to some peeing and water issues (she's knocked up...it wasn't me). As the guy escorted us down the stairs right up to the stage during "Musicology", i swear i felt a tad royal. The geograhpical area where i spent most of my time was celebrating hard and funky. To sum it up "FUCK YEAH!!!!!" i caught eye contact with the Genius more than once. He played many a solo a few feet in front of my face. Hiro swears she saw the tip of a penis peeking out of some tight pants. i swear i heard him say during the beginning of "I Could Never take the Place of Your Man" : "The pregnant girl in the front row can leave her man". i have never heard applause so loud and so strong for the whole time leading up to the encore. Bad Ass Muther Fucker. i think my favorite songs of the night were "Take Me With You", "Sign of the Times", "Purple Rain" a cover of "A Whole Lot of Love", "Controversy", "DMSR"...ah fuck, the whole show was AWESOME!

If you can, see him (3 more nights at Staples as i write this).

Next night of ear abuse was a Spaceland/Zen excursion. Keane (thanks to the coolest woman ever, Andrea, for the ticket) at Spaceland sounded very sweet. Beautiful sounds come out of those boys. "Somewhere Only We KNow" sounded as good live as i hoped. The Destroyers were pretty cool. Off to Kiss or Kill at Zen...Bang Sugar Bang rocks the house. Great anthem feeling and lot of energy that catches the whole room. Loved the cover of INXS' "Don't Change". Also caught The Nots. There's a rock star brewing there and the veins in his neck buldge out from the passion. Great Band. Kiss or Kill is a good night out...lots of good nuggets playing there. Catch them before they get big and go their seperate ways. Happy Tish?

i warned you

Amen. Its about time I see responses such as this when I'm bringing up Prince. It seems all too the usual that people are quick to judge him by his eccentric behavior and their own ignorance. When in fact, he is ultimately one of the greatest musicians that ever graced this planet. He is without a doubt my favorite musician of all time.

Radiohead in 1997 in Cleveland in a high school auditorium. I was in the 2nd row, there was a storm outside, and the power went out twice during the show. Someone shouted 'stonehenge!' (reference to spinal tap and all the technical problems) and the whole band started laughing. Thom Yorke was basically taking requests from the audience and they played 3 encores...

Best show after that I think would have to be Riverboat Gamblers a year or two ago at some dive bar in Columbus, OH. If you've never seen them, the lead singer is incredibly crazy. At one point he literally left the venue with the microphone still hooked up and was singing outside to random people walking by. :)

Alright, alright.
Last one...
Jeff Hamilton Trio in 2003.
Jeff is the best brush player ever. If anyone cares.
Oh, and if you dig Tamir Hendelman, check out the Jay Lawrence Trio's album "Thermal Strut." It's good. Jay's a good friend/teacher of mine.

I havent been to alot of shows, so here are some of my fav performances:

The Prodigy w/ Adam Freeland - DC 2006 - my favorite band ever, my first ever actual "concert", this one takes the cake as number 1.

Thievery Corporation - DC 2006
The Police - V Fest 2007
Infected Mushroom - V Fest 2007
Booka Shade - V Fest 2007
Explosions in the Sky - V Fest 2007
Shout Out Out Out Out - V Fest 2007

some disappointing shows include...

Shiny Toy Guns (07)
LCD Soundsystem (V-fest) - they were ok. I blame the idiot that didnt put them in the dance tent where they belong. The crowd wasnt into it at all, and unfortunately James Murphy wasnt too into it either. Throw them in a smaller indoor venue and i'd be there in a heartbeat.

I've been to over a hundred gigs, most likely, but Nine Inch Nails take spots #1 and #2 at the top. Their Coachella gig was decent, but I'm referring to their arena shows. Hot damn they were good. That was 2 completely different band lineups, too (Trent exempt).

Close seconds would probably go to Wilco (University show), then Arcade Fire or maybe the Yeah Yeah Yeahs @ Coachella.

I remember missing the Cure, Love and Rockets, Pixies show, that along with missing Ride were big regrets. Wish I'd seen U2 back in the day too ! You saw alot of sweet shows.

Boingo was fun for Halloween every year.

Yes...I have been fortunate to see lots of good stuff over the years. I had a gap in the mid to late 90's getting married, kids, etc.
But now my oldest son is 12 & loves music. His 2 passions are skateboarding & music. He loves going to concerts. So over the past 2+ years I have taken him to Green Day, Chili Peppers, Killers, Smashing Pumpkins, Social D, 311/Matisyahu & we went to Coachella last year. Also we were able to get a tour of CBGB right before it shut down. That was a big thrill for him due to the Ramones being his favorite. It is really cool to be able to expose him to music & have such great bonding times through music. We will be at Coachella again this year. He is really excited to see Jack White.
Then my 7 year old is a huge U2 fan & says his first concert will be when they tour in 09. My wife doesn't really dig the concert thing (went to a few with me but...too loud...crowded...etc) but is really supportive of their interest.

Ahhhhh, Boingo at the Aladdin. i saw them in 93 there with X. One of my more memorable concert experiences because of the surrounding Vegas story that goes with it. i miss the live Boingo sooooooo much. Kinda miss the Aladdin too.

I saw Boingo a bunch in the 80's (first show I ever went to in '82), they came to Bakersfield a lot. They were so much fun.
Speaking of X...
Grad night at Disneyland in 1985 they played at the little Tomorrowland Theatre. They were so good, we went back and saw them again 2 hours later. That should be on my "best of" list too.

The theatre is still there, I think. I know it's the only thing that didn't get torn down. They built the mall around it.

I don't know if they still have concerts in there though. That hotel has like 30 different daily shows...I think some of them might be in there. I know that at Vegoose '05, they had late night shows there.

All we got was Information Society. :(

Which was pretty damn cool, but they're no X.

Every time I have seen Gogol Bordello, it was pretty great. Ratatat's set at Coach last year was pretty sexy, and I can't forget MAN MAN at the rythym room up in Phoenix.

No way they're on the mainstage. Outdoor maybe. I'd be pissed if they were on the mainstage, too impersonal for them.

L.A. Invasion 07'

Paramore
Perry Ferrel
Cypress Hill
Chris Cornell
Kid Rock
Velvet Revolver
Foo Fighters
Smashing Pumpkins (headlined)

also that festival had a revolving stage so as soon as one set finnished they the whole stage did a 180 and there was the next band all ready to play. The best was when it went from the foo fighters straight into the smashing pumpkins. it was a epic show and I can't wait till this years L.A. Invasion.
