Depeche Mode, Beastie Boys, Jane's Addiction to headline 2009 Lollapalooza
Depeche Mode, the Beastie Boys and a reunited Jane’s Addiction are expected to headline the fifth annual Lollapalooza Aug. 7-9 in Grant Park.
Though promoters would not confirm the information Friday, multiple sources inside the industry said the three headliners are a lock for the festival. Three more arena-level headliners are expected to be included when the complete lineup is announced next month.
Depeche Mode is releasing its 12th album, “Sounds of the Universe,” on April 21. Though it has been a staple of alternative music since the early ‘80s, the British synth-pop band has not previously played Lollapalooza, which ran as a touring festival from 1991 through ’97 in its first incarnation.
The Beastie Boys are also working on a studio album, tentatively titled “Tadlock’s Glasses,” for release this year. The New York hip-hop trio last played Lollapalooza in 1994. Their previous studio album, “To the 5 Burroughs,” was released in 2004.
The original Jane’s lineup of Perry Farrell, Dave Navarro, Stephen Perkins and Eric Avery headlined the first Lollapalooza tour in 1991, only to break up soon after. There have been sporadic reunions since, but none included all four original members until some one-off gigs last year. A national tour was announced a few days ago, but a Chicago date was conspicuously absent.

Depeche Mode isn't a BIG draw, but they are a draw, in that I would see them at a festival, but not their own show because tickets costs way too much. I wouldn't really miss Lolla if it left either. If I lived in Chicago I would as it's a great chance to see a bunch of great bands in a very sub par environment. I don't mean the park or the city either. I mean the sound, conflicts and drunks.

I don't know. Lolla's headliners aren't exactly clearly defined as last year we watche Kanye and NIN switch spots on the lineup. Wilco played opposite Rage which I actually enjoyed. It allowed me to get close to the stage for Wilco without a whole lot of effort. I don't know if that means Wilco co-headlined but in my opinion last years headliners were.
Radiohead, Rage Against the Machine and Nine Inch Nails. Kanye and Wilco were like sub headliners or something in my opinion.

i don't know why everyone's bitching. Depeche Mode, Beasties and Jane's are a fine set of headliners, and they will probably have a strong line up to follow. If any of you would be at Chicago at the time and not spending money to fly out there, I'm sure you would go. I admit it's pretty weak after last year's line up headliners, but it's nearly impossible to beat Radiohead, Rage, NIN, Wilco & Kanye.

WHAT THE FUCK!!!!!! LOU REED AT LOLL!?!?!?!?
http://blogs.suntimes.com/derogatis/2009/03/finally_some_exciting_lollapal.html
Finally, some exciting Lollapalooza whispers
By Jim DeRogatis on March 20, 2009 12:29 AM | Permalink | Comments (1) | TrackBacks (0)
So far, the acts rumored to be performing at this year's Lollapalooza in Grant Park on Aug. 7 to 9 have been less than thrilling: Kings of Leon, Depeche Mode, Jane's Addiction and (the one standout) the Beastie Boys. But industry sources cornered at SXSW have added another exciting name to the list: Lou Reed.
The venerated godfather of punk has been performing his classic 1973 concept album "Berlin" in select cities, but he's yet to stop in Chicago. It's unclear whether he'll be playing that piece at Lollapalooza or a plain old Lou Reed set, but either way, it should be a treat.
Also said to be joining the roster, whenever Austin, TX-based promoters C3 Presents choose to announce it: alternative-country chanteuse and former Chicagoan Neko Case and the Windy City's devoted pop eccentric Andrew Bird.
Discounted "early bird" tickets for the festival go on sale on March 31. An earlier bacth of "souvenir tickets" were put on sale a few weeks ago, and they quickly sold out.
C3, which staged the Grant Park rally the night of President Obama's election as well as several events in Washington, D.C. during the inauguration, is also said to have been tapped to help stage this year's Easter egg hunt on the White House lawn. No word yet on whether Perry Farrell will take part.
GV! WTF MAN! LOU REED IS MORE A COACHELLA FIT THEN LOLL!

The Killers and Tool are expected to fill out the headlining slots for the fifth annual Lollapalooza festival Aug. 7-9 in Grant Park.
Multiple industry sources confirmed over the weekend at the South by Southwest Music Conference in Austin, Texas, that the two bands will join headliners previously reported by the Tribune: the Beastie Boys, Depeche Mode and Jane's Addiction, plus Kings of Leon.

I still can't believe the Tool rumors might be true. Isn't Maynard too busy with his joke, novelty act and his wine?
So how are the headliner conflicts going to work this year? The only ones I'd want to see are Depeche Mode and Tool.
Lou Reed, Neko Case, Ben Folds are win. Lollapalooza lineups always turn out pretty good. I hear such horrible things about the fest itself, though (too crowded, bros, pop-up ads IRL, no soul, etc).
sbessiso
03-23-2009, 05:10 AM
Well it's 6 headliners, so there's going to be direct conflicts each night.
I'm catching Jane's and Depeche. I would like to see Killers and Beasties but I'm getting legendary sets from them at Coachella and Bonnaroo respectively.
I'm already so worried about conflicts!!
And yeah Frank, I hear the same thing about Lolla. TONS of drunken crowds, etc. But I think if we go with the mind set that this isn't Coachella and it's not trying to be we'll enjoy it.

Honestly, I think it's great for Lolla. While personally I'm only interested in Jane's and Depeche, that is the strongest top 6 of any festival which was smart since they're lacking a huge legend like Bruce or Macca. Plus with Lou Reed in there as well, it could be the best yet. All that remains to be seen is if they come through in the middle and lower tiers, or if they continue the move towards more of a Virgin-type fest with a ton of huge headliners and a steep drop-off in size and quality of lower acts.
Optimistic
03-23-2009, 06:27 AM
And while I don't think any of the talk of Chems, Underworld, Orbital or anyone else is valid in the slightest, if they keep taking baby steps in the electronic-music department (as I expect them to do this year), in 2 or 3 years they might be able to challenge the Sahara.

No you're right. I guess what I meant was that Virgin, while it has some decent smaller bands, seems almost like concert for 1 or 2 headliners with a couple smaller bands opening rather than an actual festival. Lolla kind of felt like that already last year with the whole think feeling kind of like a giant Radiohead concert.
Also, you can't really trust Perry, he talks up himself, his bands, and his festival a LOT. Last year he talked about how there were going to be all these amazing collaborations between Lollapalooza artists and the only one that actually happened was his little performance with Slash. Cool but didn't quite meet the hype he gave it.

All Points West was a giant Radiohead show/s - seeing you could only see about 3-4 bands before them per day. Lolla is a whole other animal with plenty of great big name choices throughout the day. It really is a festival. Did you actual go for anyone else than Radiohead there Mr. optimistic.

I don't get why everyone always say's "this band" or "that band" are out-of-place at lolla because of sponsors/the fact that all but the headliners play in the daylight. People do know that already bands like Pearl Jam, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Radiohead, Nine Inch Nails, Pixies have all headlined before and been subjected to partial daylight for their sets right? Hell Daft Punk had to deal with some light at the beginning of their set (oh and for the record, only the first 15 minutes or so of each headlining slot are before dark, besides the #1 slot) so I'm sure Tool can make it work. Also peope should probably realize most of the bands don't give 2 shits about all the sponsorship stuff right? They're there to play some music for their fans and make a quick buck. It's not like Tool are selling their souls to AT&T or anything.

I know it's a festival. The thing is though last year, in order to book 4 huge headliners, Lolla sacrificed their middle tier. I mean Broken Social Scene, Black Keys and Lupe Fiasco were subheadliners for christ's sake. If you (meaning Lolla) sacrifice your middle tier more and more to beef up your headliner choices, it seems like that's all you care about. I went last year and saw a ton of great lower and middle tier bands but it was a big step down from when I went in 06. I mean McCartney's great but what if the #2 band that day was Conor Oberst? Would you be happy? Basically that's what all the complaints about Coachella's Saturday are right? Not that it's a bad day but that its subheadliners aren't up to par?

The fact is Lollapalooza competes and brings the headliners every single year. The only way the festival could be as good as Coachella, Bonnaroo or Sasquatch is if they become a destination festival. Unfortunately that won't happen because the built in Chicago audience make it a success.

Whoa why the name calling? I was just trying to have an honest debate. I try and not make a complete ass of myself like 90% of the new people here and actually participate in geniune discussion in threads others have made and I still get met with hostility.

so who's going? It sounds to me like lolla got the pan handle of headliners this years-both KOL & Jane's are playing Sasquatch, while beasties and killers r playing Coachella & Bonnaroo. I'm just not sure since I'll be already seeing all of those bands this year cept Tool, but i'll probably be in Chicago around that time anyways, so who knows.

I thought I would catch a day but I will be in Chicago over the 4th of July instead this year. No Lollapalooza for me. If Tool is headlining I doubt it's a one off show, they will play other dates.

They haven't even announced the 100 fucking other bands on the bill yet.
but about last year...
Raconteurs, Gnarls, Love and Rockets, Bloc Party were also "sub-headliners"

Daft Punk certainly did... :rolleyes
Dafty became a headliner after 2006 because of the Pyramid. They sold out some pretty big venues on the Alive tour.
What format would that be?
Lou Reed isn't exactly a "arena size" headliner. And I love Lou. My money is that Lou will be there because of the Killers.

Lou Reed is a music legend and you can't base headliner status on arena vs theater performances. Jane's Addiction and Wilco aren't selling out arenas on their own either.

true dat. But doesn't "new" Lolla base their selling point on big headliners? I can see Lou headlining Roo or Coachella though...

I have no idea what they base their headliners on. Sounds like they will have a decent lineup as usual but I ain't flying back to Chicago go to that shitty fest just to see Tool. Tool will play elsewhere. Maybe Europe in the Winter. hmm

You realize that Beasties, Tool, and Jane's actually all played lolla before Coachella even existed right? Along with Nine Inch Nails, Rage, Beck, Prodigy and plenty of other bands you're so quick act like coachella discovered.
u cannot count lollapalooza back then as it was a traveling festival. not a destination festival......
but props to them... i would go if it was closer... im sticking to outside lands this year.... :)
so far a great lineup for lolla

paging Tommy and Randy (you owe me $50).
I believe I said I would give out blowjobs, not $50. But I'm not sure anybody took me up on that.
Well, a good portion of their set will be performed before dark. Corporate-sponsored shit everywhere. They're not touring. I don't know, it just seems weird to me...
How do you figure they'll perform before dark? Lolla headliners go on 2 at a time (save for Radiohead last year). Tool will conflict with someone like The Killers or Depeche Mode.
all 6 have played coachella already.5 as headliners......... so although lollapalooza is doing a solid job getting headliners, coachella has already gone there so they get points for that........ but once again this year they lose the overall headliner battle...
Why does it have to be a competiton? Seriously that's stupid. Enjoy the fests as they are. Or not. But this competition stuff gets old.

Tommy is right though, there's no need for competiton and it really pisses me off when people do that. Comparing and contrasting the two is fine. But if you're going to bring in coachella's history to bring down the merit of Lolla's current line-up, then you have to bring in Lolla's as well...and the touring festival is a part of that.

An outdoor festival does not for an enjoyable deep-dish pizza eating experience make. Was that english?
Anyway, Gino's East and Giordano's are the standard-bearers, and both are close to Grant Park, and if you're coming to Chicago, you can't not go to one of the two.

I agree. I had deep dish at Lolla last year and it wasn't the same as going to a restuarant (as expected). Plus it's too hot outside to REALLY enjoy it.
I went to Uno's when I was there for a Bears game in November and it was the best pizza I've ever had. I'm looking to try Gino's East this time around.

Orbital playing Lolla and not Coachella would really fucking suck.
Maynard was in my town promoting his wine. I thought it was pretty funny.

I don't agree with this at all.
All Points West was a giant Radiohead show/s - seeing you could only see about 3-4 bands before them per day. Lolla is a whole other animal with plenty of great big name choices throughout the day. It really is a festival. Did you actual go for anyone else than Radiohead there Mr. optimistic.
I agree with you C dub. Friday at lolla had The Black Keys, Bloc Party, Gogol Gordello, The Raconteurs, Cat Power, Yeasayer, CSS, Malkmus and the Jicks, Grizzly Bear, The kills. I would hardly call that filler for a friday Radiohead show. Lolla has comparable lineups to Coachella. The vibe of the festival is completely different though, but you will have a lot of fun.

I've been to Uno's and Due's dozens of times. Good pizza but I prefer Gino's to anything else.
That side Pizza is like music. Everyone has different taste so that's why there will always be an argument. NY thin vs chicago deep dish. Small neighborhood pizza places vs tourist attraction places (Uno's and Gino's).
I like Gino's so much I purchased a sweatshirt.

I used to feel this way, too, before I tried Giordano's. I know, it looks like what makes it "deep" is that it's filled up with tomato sauce. Gross. Upon further inspection, though, you'll find that the sauce is quite limited relative to the flaky crust and delicious gooey cheese that actually account for the 2" height.
