WOW - that BB show at Congress sounds good, especially since I'm not planning to check them out at Lolla.... I haven't been on the internet in 2 days and have a lot of catching up to do as far as after show announcements. Anything else regarding this Arctic Monkyes show @ Metro?
Does anyone know the capacity for Congress and for Metro? I will look into it now... oh yah for me, I got my golden ticket in the mail.

edit: got my ticket for Arctic Monkeys. I am not 100% about going because all the aftershow info isn't out but don't want to risk wanting to go but there not being tickets left. If anyone is interested - presale password is secretdoor.

wow. Decisions, decisions...

So I'm torn about the Beastie Boys, I get in at 4:30 and really wanted to just chill, eat, and drink that night... but that should be a fantastic show. I have to make up my mind.

Friday night - looks like I will be going to Arctic Monkeys.
Saturday - I'm leaning towards STS9
Sunday - Deerhunter/No Age/Dan Deacon. anyone know how Logan Square Audotorium is?

wow, great aftershows. Being 17 kinda sucks, there's only one show i can go to every night (except thursday, but we're getting in friday morning).

Saturday - STS9 or take the night off...
Sunday - Deerhunter/No Age/Dan Deacon

Yeah, I was really hoping for White Lies, Of Montreal, or Bat For Lashes after shows. oh well.

sbess, i'm sure there will be tix floating around cheap for beasties.

these aftershows are plentiful! last year we only had a choice of like 2-3 a night. this year has about 5 a night! beasties at congress would be sick. i just saw gogol there on 5/31...not the best sound, but it will be an intimate venue for bboys. i kinda wish i was going this year, but oh well...i'm not made of money like unknown. ;)

they start at 10 so a lot of people will leave lolla toward the end of the headliner's set
my aftershows=
Thurs=BBoys
Fri=Band of Horses
Sat=Fleet Foxes maybe
Sunday=Would love to go to see the no age/deerhunter/dan deacon show but the venue is not close to lolla, and i'll def be tired from the weekend,

PLUS i've gotta catch a early flight back to AZ and somehow try to get to school. (First day of HS senior year) at least go to a little bit of it

I don't know about that, I thought they started at 11 or 12? I know Auerbach/Cage show starts at 11:00PM and I thought I remembered last year people wondering how long it would take to get to an after show venue from grant park. Starting at 10:00PM would be useless unless you could teleport yourself.

idk
according to the "official" lolla messageboard topic on the matter:

Q: What are the start times for "official" aftershows?
A: Generally, they'll start at about 10:15-10:30. Sometimes they start earlier or later depending on the number of opening acts and the doors time.

If I can snag a ticket to this show then I will (maybe) most definitely be at Tool. I've just been putting money aside because I want to get my own place by summers end, so I need to see what I can do. As far as im concerned that money doesnt exist.

Also faxy, we seem to be the only ones interested in the Auerbach show! I would very much like to go but I dont know

faxman75
06-23-2009, 11:41 AM
My concern for that weekend right now is lack of a vehicle at this point and that doesn't really have anything to do with lolla since I will most likely take the train into the city for the fest. I would either need a place to crash following the show or a ride back to the suburbs if I did Auerbach though....i'm stumped at this point Salah but if I can make this happen I would love to join you. I'm guessing i'm kinda screwed until I figure out more about my stay in Chicago. I'm meeting up with an old roommate from 12 years ago and I may try to just snag a ride with them if the train idea falls through but i'm not sure how they feel about after shows either. They are pretty much just going for Tool.

Still impressive if we are looking at 10:15-10:30 start times. I'm guessing maybe they held back the start times a bit or you are superman if you exited Grant Park at 10:00PM and were able to shower and then get to any random venue all in 15-30 minutes. :) I have zero experience with after shows as I didn't attend any last year.

At this point im still considering the Auerbach show faxy. I would like to have a free night after Lolla and it wouldnt be the end of the world if I didnt go. I have to secure my BBoys ticket first as well as the killers in Miami show and maybe possibly seeing them in Orlando or Tampa

I'm about 40 minutes away. Train is the best bet. I know people who can probably pick me up. I'm south suburbs/NW Indiana basically. From there a homey could get me to where I need to end up in Dyer, IN. Basically I still need to work out all kinds of logistics for my Chicago stay and i'm trying to do it all without renting a car. Fortunately I know a good amount of people scattered around.

Not to mislead anyone it took me ~45min to get in the venue after the Lolla headliner ended. That's why I missed one opener and caught half of another. The important thing is you can get there in time for the after show headliner and see all of the Lolla headliner if you don't waste time in between. Most of the after shows go until 1-2am anyway.

I am so down, Tommy! I was going to change my flight around but I decided against it since I currently have a nonstop flight from San Diego to Chicago arriving at 4:35pm. If I arrive earlier I would be on a flight with a stop which means at least a 2 hour earlier departure. I am thinking I will just catch a cab to the hostel, check in, get ready and bounce. I need to start reasearching venue locations.... Anyway, if the preBeastiemeetup happens when I can make it then definitely!! If not, can someone save me a spot in line? I'll bring you a slice of pizza or buy you a drink on the inside :)

Sunday=Would love to go to see the no age/deerhunter/dan deacon show but the venue is not close to lolla, and i'll def be tired from the weekend,

shoot - it isn't close? See... gotta do my research. If it isn't close and if nobody is planning to go from the hostel then I may bail on this show too. I rather have a couple drinks and recap the weekend with boardies than struggle to get around Chicago on the last night plus with it being all ages.... I guess I'm still undecided.
Glad you found the presale password useful, karma :)

jesus. White Lies opening for Arctic Monkeys would be insanity for me.

I volunteer to research places to eat/drink near venues. I will start with Thursday night... what time do people wanna be in line for Beastie Boys though? I am guessing I won't make it to the hostel till about 5:30.... so even meeting to grab a bite and a couple beers would take at least an hour no? It would be cool if someone in Chicago or VERY familiar could offer up some suggestions.... all I want is delicious local goodness to eat...

And just from my personal experience, I don't know how any of you will hit up an aftershow on Sunday. I was REALLY hoping for that Deerhunter/No Age/Dan Deacon show, but on Sunday night? No way. I'll be gassed and wanting to spend the time with friends, not at an all-ages show.

Really? I thought the did pretty damn good this year at Coachella and totally wasn't expecting that. *sigh*

What are you talking about man? This post just confuses me, Chris. I bought that album the day it came out and just loved every damn second of it. I missed the tour they did for said album and would like to just at least a song or two off of it. Is that really such an extreme request? I can see how it comes off as complaining but im not really complaining, I was just pointing out that I couldnt believe they didnt play anything off of it. It doesnt HAVE to be the singles, but those just seem like the obvious choice.

Whats another example of me listening "to the newest release of any band that somebody is really really into to have a valid complaint about what they do and dont play YEARS after said release"?

I'm pretty sure my aftershow schedule is going to look somthing like this-

Thursday night- Beastie Boys @ The Congress
Friday night- Afterparty with friends at their apartment
Saturday night- Dan Auerbach w/ Cage the Elephant @ Schubas
Sunday night- Grabbing a beer at a bar and relaxing

I was all about getting Arctic Monkey's tickets and going to STS9 on Saturday but I'll save some coin on friday and hang out with old friends. Saturday I'm not terribley excited about, but my friend is claiming Schubas is one of her favorite bars and what the hell its half of Black Keys and Cage the Elephant (who were great at Coach) in a small venue.

Might I try to convince you to convince your friends to see STS9 instead of Dan Auerbach. I'm a HUGE fan of The Black Keys, but Dan's solo stuff is really boring. It's not like The Black Keys. And that hurts me to say, but it's true. If not, get drunk and have a great time.

Hm, fair enough, man. I'm probably more excited about that show than any show (other than Tool and SSPU) at Lolla. Part of it also has to do with my love for the Metro (and seriously, I hate that House of Blues).

JSam, why do you hate the House of Blues so much? I have seen quite a few shows there and liked it. The sound was always good. It's not a favorite or anything but I just never had an issue with it.

I haven't had any issue with the sound there, but, I don't know, I've never really felt like I was at a show there. More like I was at a bar where a band was playing. It's really illuminated in there, bouncers everywhere, tons of people conversing... I guess I don't truly hate it, but it just doesn't compare to the many spectacular venues throughout the city.

Chia, I did end up contracting the flu, pink eye, and an ear infection immediately upon my return. :) Clearly, I needed more sleep.

edit: Also, I find it sad that I have to intrude upon other people's threads now that don't relate to me because I have no big shows coming up. :( Time to post in the DM thread I guess.

Alright, I'll be rolling into Chicago about 1pm on Friday and rolling out at 5am on Saturday. What should I be doing between the time Lolla ends until about 3am when I need to go to the airport? Lilia, what are we doing?

unknown
06-26-2009, 07:46 AM
Jen, what time do you think you'll get to Lolla? Around 2 or 3? We should be able to meet up easily. I want to catch Of Montreal but I also want to get a good spot for DM. Are you heading up to the rail? Afterwards I will head back to my hotel room to shower and change then head over to Arctic Monkeys aftershow. Do you like them?

Did you know? My dad got me a room at the Sheraton not too far from Grant Park for my birthday :) So far my twin cousins are in to roll to Chicago from Columbus, still checking on a couple other of my cousins.

Of Montreal just don't work at festivals either, I saw them down here on their own and that was unbelievably satisfying so I dont mind skipping. Ive never seen Depeche Mode before (eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeek!!!!!! so excited!)

Oh, awesome. Nice to know I can crash on a floor for a couple of hours and shower.

Should arrive at Lolla around 230 I suppose. It takes about an hour for the blue line train to get to downtown Chicago from the airport. My flight arrives at 1:10.

Salah, I want to watch DM with you so we'll need to meet up so we can get a good spot. I have no problem crushing people to get to the front.

Tip-if you're facing the stage, you want to be on the right-that's Dave's side. Martin's side is to the left.

OK Since I will get to see Of Montreal at Street Scene I guess it is all about DM on Friday night so count me in the mob to the front, Jen. Of course you can crash on a bed/couch/floor whatever and shower prior to your departure. That's Fletch, Salah.
Martin writes the songs (used to be sole songwriter but now Dave is writing a few per album),
Dave sings the songs (but Martin sings at least 2 per album),
Martin sings amazing backup for Dave on most if not all songs,
and Fletch just "bums around." :)

I could understand that. There are definitely much better venues in the city. There are so many there a bunch of places I never got to check out like the Double Door and the long gone Lounge Ax.

The Metro, Park West and Vic Theater were probably my three favorites. The Riviera always had great shows too. The Aragon would be fun but definitely has some sound issues, it's very cavernous which brings some echoing and muddy sound issues. Anyway, I was just curious. :)

Yea, the location looks great though the reviews are a little mixed. Sounds like it might be a little run-down inside, but I don't really care that much. I got a cheap rate with work discount and it's really close to the park, works for me. :)

I'm nto at all familiar with Chicago, but the walk does not look long on the map. A little more than 10 blocks to the festival entrance?

The Congress (for BBoys) is going to be a bit more complicated, but not too bad. It's not walkable at night, as far as I know. But you could take the blue line line to the venue, and either walk, bus or cab to the blue line. Looks like around 10-15 blocks from your hotel to the metro station. Or a 10 minute bus ride.

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=301+East+North+Water+Street,+Chicago,+IL+606 11+(Sheraton+Chicago+Hotel+%26+Towers)&daddr=Congress+Theater,+Chicago&hl=en&geocode=FWMufwIdEwrH-iGhWKVusN1rug%3BFeKmfwIdEezF-iHFCQRt09fjtw&gl=us&mra=ls&dirflg=r&date=06%2F26%2F09&time=1:16pm&ttype=dep&noexp=0&noal=0&sort=&tline=&sll=41.907205,-87.655225&sspn=0.05206,0.131321&ie=UTF8&ll=41.902022,-87.657251&spn=0.052064,0.131321&z=14&start=0

If you're going to the house of blues straight from the festival, it's easy, as the red line connects them. Or maybe several of us can share a cab if we don't feel like using public transit.

You are close enough to where you can walk. The river to Lollapalooza is maybe a 15 minute walk. If you want you can take a cab and it would be less than $10 easy.

You are a half a mile from a CTA station for the "L" train that is convenient.

It's like $2.25.

Here's how to walk there. If you are going straight from the fest though there are "L" CTA stations closer to but to walk from your hotel. Step by step.

Walk a short distance W on E North Water St. Turn right on N Columbus Dr. Walk a short distance N on N Columbus Dr. Turn left on E North Water St. Walk a short distance W on E North Water St. Turn right on N Cityfront Plaza Dr. Walk 0.10 mile NW on N Cityfront Plaza Dr. Turn left on E Illinois St. Walk 0.11 mile W on E Illinois St. Turn right on N Michigan Ave. Walk a short distance N on N Michigan Ave. Turn left on E Grand Ave. Walk 0.19 mile W on E Grand Ave. Total walking is 0.58 miles.

You are at the Grand CTA
Then Get on the Red Line and
get off the train at the Addison stop you will see Wrigley Field and the metro is across the street. Step by step though

Walk 0.09 mile N on N Sheffield Ave. Turn left on W Waveland Ave. Walk 0.18 mile W on W Waveland Ave. Turn right on N Clark St. Walk a short distance NW on N Clark St. Total walking is 0.37 miles.

It's pretty simple really. Those are step by step walking instructions. I use this site for planning and getting around on the cheap using the L.

YES! Jen - you need to make us a good mix of your favorite DM stuff. I have about 6 of their albums but they have soooo much material!

Chia, was that 10 block walk from the hotel where I am staying? I guess I'm just concerned about what looks like a bridge and/or large road. I am going to utilize good ol' google street view and see what the walk would look like.

Eh, if cabs are cheap then maybe. I will probably leave that as a last resort or if I'm in a rush since the cost of cabs +tip would probably add up over the weekend and I rather use that money for drinks, food, and green. Which reminds me, who should I talk to for that???

I feel like a lost soul on myspace.... one thing I didn't care for on facebook (from what I can tell) is the whole updates on friends. I only have like 3 friends or some shit but whenever I have gone on I see all this shit regarding my friends pages and what their friends are saying....? Is this how it works?

Damn, Faxman! hook it UP. thanks :)

I know once I get there I will find my way easily. I love cities with trains and mass transit systems that work efficiently.

YES! Jen - you need to make us a good mix of your favorite DM stuff. I have about 6 of their albums but they have soooo much material!

no no no, we dont have time for her favorite stuff! I basically want a mix of their current setlist, this way we can sing and grind to every song!

Double Door and House of Blues. Though I think the HoB question was answered. So....Double Door. Chicago frightens me. I should just stay in New Mexico and hit the casino buffet that weekend. :(

double door is right behind my apt actually. just take the blue line heading towards ohare and get off at the Damon stop. right across the street.

Yea, ShyGuy, sorry I was on the phone when I was posting and spaced. I fixed my post (and damn Google maps URLs always throw me). It was the blue line that I was talking about to House of Blues.

I know pretty much everything is feasibly walking distance but -- for me at least -- after I've been at a festival all day and have danced in the heat for hours, walking distance becomes more like 5-10 blocks, not 2+ miles. :)

Chia, was that 10 block walk from the hotel where I am staying? I guess I'm just concerned about what looks like a bridge and/or large road. I am going to utilize good ol' google street view and see what the walk would look like.

Yes, it's a really short walk, and I'm sure there is a pedestrian walkway on the bridge. (fax -- sounded like you said there was?)

My experience in pretty much every large city I've been in, is if there is a subway transit option that is reasonably close to where you want to go, this will end up being faster than a cab unless it's really late at night. I usually take trains to shows and then possibly take cabs home (depending on intoxication level :D ).

faxman75
06-26-2009, 12:29 PM
Also the "L" is elevated, it's not really a subway. yes you can walk over and across the chicago river which is what the bridges are over. The Michigan ave. (runs north and south) bridge is the one used the most and has heavy traffic but it is most definately a pedistrian bridge and a vehicle bridge.

heidi, the walk to the CTA from Grant Park is about half the walk to House of Blues. It will save you a few blocks but it's not more than a 20 minute walk from hotel or grant park to House of Blues.

It's also not exactly true that most of the venues are within walking distance. most you want to at least take a short cab ride or the L. Metro, Schubas, Double Door, The Vic, places like this are not within walking distance.

blue line doesnt go by the house of blues. not sure any line does. maybe the red line. the walk from the park to the house of blues is less than a mile.

10 city blocks here is more than a mile.

tommy, if you are leaving to go to the double door from the festival, jump on the blue line at Washington St. and Dearborn St.

chicago is super easy to get around in. no need to fret for anything. think of a cleaner, easier ny.

stop and wait a sec..
when you look at me like that darling, what did you expect

*it won't happen but i would lose my shit if they played that*

Mark or ShyGuy, I thought I'd heard that the Congress was in an area that is not good at night. Exaggeration?

Another venue that is not exactly walkable to get too. It's not the best area in the whole city but it's mostly an exaggeration. I wouldn't be worried at all.

ShyGuy75

yes, exaggeration. milwaukee ave. is a street that is lined for miles with bars and restuarants.

who said that there were venues close to the park that were walkable beside the HOB?

chiapet
06-26-2009, 12:39 PM
Well, it depends on what your idea of walkable is. I used to think nothing of walking to venues that were at least 3-4 miles away but now I'm lazy and also a little more protective of self. :)

Thanks though - I figured the neighborhood safety thing was an exaggeration. Normal big city stuff then.

Okay, I think you guys read too much into my comment. ;) unknown asked about Grant Park and the BBoys and STS9 shows (maybe the Arctic monkeys too, I didn't see that), I replied that those were all feasibly walking distance. I certainly wasn't claiming that any venue at all in Chicago is walking distance from the hotel.

Plus maybe my tone of voice was not translated on the interwebs, as I said they are *feasibly* walking distance. Sheesh ;)

Weird. I have actually walked from Grant Park to the COngress the only time I've been in Chicago and it was not a bad walk at all. You go under an overpass for the highway, IIRC. I do remember that about halfway through we started to wonder if it was the brighest idea we ever had ;)

Nope, just didn't want people to think most of the stuff was walking distance. :) I also wasn't trying to argue with you or make anything out of it, just give info as to how far some places were specifically the ones you were talking about the House of Blues and Congress theater, and I threw in some other venues just as an FYI.

I certainly wasn't trying to make you look bad or anything, I figured you were inquiring and I gave facts that's all. :)

Yea, I understand, Mark. I'm sure most stuff is not walking distance for the average person. I do tend to forget sometimes that most people come from "car" cities, my idea of what's walkable is skewed, admittedly.

Yeah, pretty much by general rule I will walk anywhere within the loop. The loop is basically the area from the museums to the south to the river to the north (though I would go another mile up to the Hancock building) and Wacker drive to the west. Anything outside of the loop, i'm driving or taking public transportation. That's me though, I don't like walking more than 2 miles anywhere :lool
