There are way worse bands than Stars. Plus you don't have to go see them if you don't want to, it's not like they take up a headlining spot...

I vote for Jack Johnson and Killers as the thorns in Coachella's side

04 NO ONE! what a great year!
05 Bright Eyes. The Faint killed it and he ruined the end of a great coachella.
06 Audio Bullys. I'd still watch that set 1000 times over for the spot I had for DP.
07 Tapes n Tapes or DJ Shadow. Again both weren't bad, but boring. Also Shadow was way late.
08 The Breeders. I was thoroughly disappointed. I left early.

-CocoRosie, though it was really the sound crew's fault. They barely got through their set but the feedback was horrendous.
-Air had bad sound too, plus they were late, plus they didn't seem all that into it.
-I wasn't at Lily Allen, but what I saw on YouTube wasn't pretty.

2008
-M.I.A. was a huge disaster, but I still had fun

What happened with MIA during her set? I keep hearing "train wreck" but nothing more specific.

It's been described in a fairly extensive thread in this category and Pitchfork posted a nice summary, but in short:
1)Drum machine broke, so Paper Planes was played out of sync....over and over again.
2)The crowd rushed the stage during Bird Flu and cause a panic, so police cut the lights on.
3)M.I.A. threw a fit about said lights...over and over again.
4)The gunshots...Dear Jesus the gunshots.
5)When the crowd cleared and she came back onstage, M.I.A. was not in the party mood anymore and did a connect-the-dots performance of Paper Planes...with the drum machine still broken.
6)The fact that Kraftwerk, Animal Collective and a portion of Portishead were happening during all of this.

Incorrect, my friend. She actually gave an awesome set. This was of course during the "drunk crazy girl" stage and well before the "drunk crazy cracked out psycho" stage. She was a little loopy but she had a great voice and the charisma to win over fans. That was actually my favorite set of 2007.

Day 2/05

Day 1/07
Brother Ali
Flosstradamus and kid sister
Amy Winehouse
Interpol
Day 2/07
CocoRosie- I blame the sound guy and the sisters, it was awful
The New Pornographers
The Decemberists
Day 3/07
Jose Gonzalez
the Roots
Willie Nelson
and AIR- I walked away from a great cut chemist set to wait around for a hour and a half. I sat through two songs and realized I now hated AIR

Interpol? Really? I think they were great

Worst I have seen? I was going to say The Roots but then I remembered Sleater Kinney in 2006. Oh my god.

The Roots, but I expected a lot.
Metric wasn't bad performance-wise but I wasn't into them.
Autolux did nothing for me and I'm a huge fan.
Fatboy Slim should play Fatboy Slim music.

I'm sure there are more, but the majority of things I see at Coachella are memorable worthy experiences.

Edit: Oh, of course Scars on Broadway, that's second-worst after Sleater Kinney

I think it's mostly for the reason I gave. If you like watching bands jam I can understand liking it, but I don't really enjoy it that much. I don't care how good they can play their instruments unless they use them to play the songs they created. Did they think we only wanted to hear Seed 2.0 because it was on rock radio? Why didn't you like Metric? I thought they rocked it, anyone else want to back me up on this? And if you saw VW over Cut Copy last year well that's your fault.

Air was a HUGE letdown, but not the worst band of coachella.

For me the worst performance/experience I've had at Coachella was the madonna fiasco. Started late, worst vibe ever so I bounced after the first song (which was tough since I was in the middle of the tent). Mogwai saved me though by putting on a show of complete fierceness and beauty. Damn I can't wait for this year...

Went to 5 Coachellas between 2003 - 2007 ... my 3 suggestions for this thread ...

3) Happy Mondays (2007) - it's been covered.

2) Thursday (2004) - no matter where you were on the polo grounds, you could not avoid the wave of shit that was being emitted from the main stage while they were on ...

1) Black Rebel Motorcycle Club (2004) - what a fucking disaster, and I love these guys. After 1 song, they blew out whole mess load of equipment ... guitar techs running around the stage for 15 minutes switching out guitars and basses ... played a song and a half with no vocals ... switched to acoustic for 2 tunes and left the stage 15 minutes early.

(This said, 2004 was still the best of the 5 Coachellas I went to.)

A lot of her talking between songs was to kill time while they fixed some of the technical difficulties they had. My view is probably biased though because I was coming up during their show and I had a total blast. I have the bootleg of their set and it's still pretty fun to listen to. COACHELLA!!

You know, while I would say Jack Johnson just on principle, I didn't actually stay to watch him, so I can only say that he has generated the greatest opportunity for lame jokes of all the 5 years I've gone to Coachella. ;-)

The worst performance I've ever seen was Metric last year. We actually had to leave the area because we felt it sounded so bad. Very disappointing! I don't usually harbor strong negative feelings about much music, but it seemed very uninspired and actually hurt my head to listen to.

They definitely started off with some major sound problems that got better throughout the set, but sadly never went away fully.

I also find that at the Outdoor theater if you are not relatively close the sound is bad regardless and it is harder to get into the shows. I loved Metric that day it was a total blast, I am sorry to those who thought it was bad. Lots of fun in the setting sun...

Fortunately the good acts have outweighed the bad by about 1000 times BUT my disappointments are as follows:

Cafe Tacuba - Maybe its just not my style but it seemed so campy and cheesy. I felt like I was watching some sort of Los Lobos cover act...

Tiesto - That dude got to play on the main stage?! I didn't stick around for the set or anything but the Main Stage? Really?

Eagles of Death Metal - Most unnecessary use of 2 drummers I've ever seen...absolutely awful.

Coldplay - No matter what, they are terrible...

Making Coachella a 2 day festival again would cut down on bad acts as GV would not need to get so many "filler" type acts...just my two cents
