Tom Waits is my big underdog pick for this year.

He did a short summer tour last year that sold out in minutes. Not only would he fit perfectly at Coachella, but it would give many the chance to see him if they couldn't grab tix last year.

I think Tom Waits playing on Saturday would be perfect. I've said it before and I'll say it again.. Tom Waits would be the Portishead of 09.

Tell me this wouldn't be amazing...

Let me elaborate on the Portishead connection...

Aside from the super-rarity and HUGE fanbase..
Imagine making your way over the the main stage at night.. the crowd buzzing with excitement.. and Tom Waits takes the stage.. seeing his face on the video screens.. the crowd goes crazy... he then proceeds to lay down some groovy, creepy, skin-crawlingly-good tunes for the next hour, transforming the atmosphere.

I get goosebumps just thinking about it.

I have been thinking that he would subheadline.. But now.. I'm kind of thinking that he could definitely headline. And I don't think anyone would have a problem with that.

i saw the very first day of this tour... i remember that opening; so amazing, so PERFECT! there is no better show, and would be no better choice for a headliner. his reflective boulderderby hat shining beams of light everywhere during eyeball kid made me flip, and his piano/ standup bass shit made me want to cry.

clumsy.. you n me are hangin hard today! QOTSA, TOM WAITS 09!!

I dont understand how Tom Waits could be loved as much in Europe as he is in the US. And if that is not the case then why didnt he play more US dates?

based on everything they've pulled off.. i think they'll win!
6/17/08 was my waits date. he's a legend man, he should be a sunday header.
you should get as much waits music as you can just listen to it now and don't stop until you're done with all of it!

clumsy342
01-18-2009, 03:41 PM
I think he might be a little "taste-specific" to headline sunday.
I mean..
if Portishead, Kraftwerk, and Prince played Saturday.. Waits should too.

i donno, he's been pretty popular for a long time. i think he could do it. his concerts sold out faster than radiohead. they sold out about as fast as the cardinals v. eagles game.

hey clumsy, how do i post video?

Get the url for the youtube video.. there will be some random letters AFTER an = in the address.. just copy THOSE letters, nothing else.
example: youtube.com/whateverblahblah=SDMKDSs_%kl.dsklds
you would just copy the 'SDMKDSs'

when you go to post a reply.. click the YouTube button and paste those letters inside the YT brackets..

get it?

Don't get me wrong, Tom Waits is probably my favorite artist ever, but I don't know if I would want my first time seeing him to be at Coachella. If he got any less than an hour and a half, I wouldn't want him there.

I understand that.. But still... come on.. It would either be an hour and a half OR one of the coolest hours ever.

well there is no excuse for you missing his 2008 tour if you love him! but he is a better artist for smaller venues i can't argue w/ that. however, coachella needs him! i'm sure he would decline based on size alone.

clumsy342
01-18-2009, 06:24 PM
I wonder if he has been approached. I'm sure he has..
But he would definitely fit in the "let's showcase one of the best tours from the previous year as a special treat" category.

Because, you know, that's a very popular category.

Read on Inforoo that Tom Waits will never play Bonnaroo since there's too many drugs around and since he's been clean for 10 years, he doesn't wanna be even near them or something like that. This supposedly comes from somebody who knows his family. Wonder if it's the same for Coachella?

Nice, I flew down to Phoenix for that first Waits show... AMAZING!

I do not see Tom Waits ever playing Coachella. It's not his style, and he's not in it for the money, so I am sure he'll just stay home and drink his bourbon.
