Im not sure if this has been answered. But seeing as I have never had to bring a tent on a plane before, is this allowed? Of course it wont be in my carry on bag. Haha. Im just afraid Im going to get to the airport and security will think Im going to use my tent to stab (poles) people with or something.

Now, as a travel agent I can speak for the international airlines ex Australia (Qantas/United etc).
You are permitted 2 x pieces of luggage at 32KG (70lb) - 23 for UA - whose dimensions musnt exceed a certain reasonable size. As far as I know around the states it's still 2 pieces but you may want to check with your travel agent/airline over there.
As long as your tent isnt huge you should be able to check it.
I'm going to whack mine in a spare suitcase so the poles don't get all smashed up by the throwers (love that in fight club) I mean baggage handlers.
Wooohooo cant wait!

if you put a tent on a PLANE, it will tend to slowly slide downhill unless you stake it properly. if you put a TENT on or over a plane, you dramatically improve your chances of a soft landing though altitude may be a problem. but if you are in fact attempting to take a tent ONTO or INSIDE an airplane, i would think that this would not present a significant problem as long as you checked it. that help?

Um....nice job trying to act like a smart-ass.

Anyway, I think Ill put my tent in a spare suitcase also. With all the other things I need for camping.

I think that a tent on a plane would blow away. The question is, what kind of ticket would you purchase to stay in the tent on the plane.

I can see the title now.

If you want to carry the tent on board, it will have to be no more than 3 ounces and fit into a 1-quart ziplock bag.

Im coming from the UK....was thinking of picking up a cheapie tent when we get there and just leave it....may be less hassle....but then the hassle could be where to buy a tent when we get there...not sure yet!!!!

Well I was hoping to pitch the tent in the plane, so it would be ready for my campsite. Hmm.

"you should be ok bringing a tent on the plane, as long as it's not a snake." here's another one.
"you should be ok pitching a tent ON the plane, as long as it's not a trouser snake."

Or here's a better one:

Q: What did the tent say to the snake?

A: Where in the hell are we going?
