Let's say you wanted to educate someone who knows nothing or very little about music, and you had to create a compilation or "Best Of". Of course we are talking about the most relevant artists/bands in the past 50 years. The catch: You can only pick 10 songs.

What would your choices be?

Let's start with: RADIOHEAD

My personal "Best of Radiohead"

- Paranoid Android
- Fake Plastic Trees
- Just
- Everything in it's Right Place
- 2 + 2 =5
- Subterranean Homesick Alien
- No Surprises

Relevance is totally subjective. There's a lot of music that is quite popular on this board that I find irrelevant. The same will be said of my tastes as well.

It was a tough decision, Amy. I was listening to Charmless Man and Country House and She's So High over and over again, but in the end, I decided to go with some cult classics like Oily Water, Trimm Trabb, a post-Coxon masterpiece like Out of Time, and Coxon-at-his-Finest with You're So Great.

there are a ton of great belle and sebastian songs, its weird cause most of their stuff is really you either like the super sad, or the high tempo upbeat songs. i like your list though :)

hmmm i dont see the lists as that. especially with the pumpkins, its why going to their shows is often a bad experience. people just know the 4 minute singles and dont get the 20-30 minute epic songs corgan goes off on.

your right that someone that never had heard them is going to like yours more, but i think mine is going to give them a better scope of what the band actually is like.

Cdubby

your list definitely gives a broader scope thats for sure. i would just like someone who doesn't know about the pumpkins to like something, anything at first in an attempt to get them to explore the catalog further. thats why i bombard my lists with singles and songs that i find catchy rather than their "best" work. and i like your list but they are mostly (all?) songs i discovered on my own after watching the today video on mtv endlessly in my youth.

edit- i need to go back to studying for finals, peaceeeeeee

I'm bracing my self for impact on what I'm about to post. I've brought a fire extinguisher with me to offset all the flaming that's about to occur, but I fear that it might be like a California wildfire, and it'll be unstoppable lol. Ladies and gentleman, the top 10 of my favorite group, yes "group", not "singer"-
JAMIROQUAI

1) Cosmic Girl
2) Little L
3) Space Cowboy
4) Blow Your Mind
5) Alright
6) High Times
7) Star Child
8) Cosmic Girl
9) Love Foolosophy
10) Black Capricorn Day

This was a hard list for me. Because this group has been around for over 15 years now. They're one of those "huge in Europe and the rest of the world groups", but they're a one-hit wonder here. "Virtual Insanity" of course made the list, because that's the song (and of course on of the coolest videos ever) that got me into them. "Canned Heat", the Vote-for-Pedro dance song in Napolean Dynamite, just missed the cut.

Now... I'm fully ready for the pending flaming. Oh yes. One more thing-

PLEASE BRING JAMIROQUAI TO COACHELLA '09

It is, and it was my favorite on SJ for a long time. Now, it annoys me a tad. I think #1 and Derek are far superior songs that achieve the same effect in a shorter amount of time. A lot of non AC fans think their stuff goes on for too long and gets a bit jammy. So, with the shorter songs supplemented, problem solved.

Mmm. I see what you're saying, but you're completely wrong. From the self-titled album onwards, the songs "VU" (and I put that in quotes for a reason that will appear later) created were a regression into the standard popish rock that the band courted in its earliest incarnations. (I'm talking the ones with Reed, Cale, De Maria, etc.) Those albums were far less collaborative---more so than, say VU/Nico, WL/WH, which, although dominated by Reed, did allow for Cale to experiment with arrangements and such; after WL/WH, Cale was a thing of the past. The 1969-onward period of the Velvets can just be interpreted as a nascent Reed-solo period. Time only proved that the rest of the band was disposable---as was the band's new direction. By the early 70s, Moe Tucker remained the only original band member still performing under the moniker of VU.

Now, I'm not claiming I don't appreciate the later stuff; I do. I find it less inspired than the band's more experimental stage. But do I write it off completely? No. I do feel, however, if we're putting together a list of VU's "best", wouldn't it be best to choose songs from when the band was at their hightest creative point? I feel---and as much as I love the VU, it's hard to say this---their creative energy completely dies off post-WL/WH, and this was undoubtedly due to Cale's departure from the band. Without Cale, the band was simply an ordinary American rock band.

Just my two cents.

I uh... I didn't think it would really be doing this band justice to just upload the recorded versions, so with the exception of Cars & Telephones, they're all rips of radio or TV recordings, mainly from the Olympia in Paris or the Enmore in Australia.

The eleventh file is an acoustic version of Woodlands National Anthem that didn't make the ten, but is still awesome and I couldn't bring myself to cut it.

That recording of Antichrist Television Blues is especially fucking earth shattering, by the way.

I did mine for Sigur Rós. A lot of these probably changed since I saw them live but I started out with 20 and had an extremely difficult time cutting it to 10 but here it is:

Svefn-g-englar
Festival
Sæglópur
Untitled 2 (Fyrsta)
Untitled 3 (Samskeyti)
Untitled 4 (Njósnavélin)
Untitled 5 (Alafoss)
Untitled 6 (E-Bow)
Untitled 7 (Dauðalagið)
Untitled 8 (Popplagið)

:p

Just missed the cut: Glósóli and Gong. Also, I probably could have just thrown in Untitled 1 (Vaka) but something else needed to go in. I could probably take a few of the Untitled songs out and put in Starálfur or something like that, but I find ( ) to easily be my favorite album by them with every track being super solid.

Sonic Youth

1. Death Valley '69
2. Expressway To Yr Skull
3. Schizophrenia
4. Teen-Age Riot
5. Trilogy
6. Titanium Expose
7. Sugar Kane
8. The Diamond Sea (maybe; alt. Washing Machine would be "No Queen Blues")
9. Sunday
10. Incinerate

This list would look a lot different if I weren't trying to be fair and balanced and cover their whole career. I'm really unfamiliar with their post 2000 stuff too, so if there's a better choice than "Incinerate," I'd be open to it.

This is the best one I've read on here. Perfect.
I might want to add The Sprawl or Cross the Breeze, but that's kinda overdoing the DN.

And the funny thing is, Incinerate is definitely the best song they've done in the last five years, in my personal opinion. I think it is a classic. I'll never forget seeing them do it at Coachella. It really made me a fan of it since then.

Focus on Murray Street. It's definitely one of their best albums. Sonic Youth meets Television.

No kidding! It is such an incredible album. Thank you.

"Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me? :(

it's probably the excessively long intro that kept it off, lol.

i can't believe sheila take a bow would make the list though, blah.

One of my long-time friends who I got to like the Smiths always tells me that Shiela Take A Bow is her favorite. I mean, you just can't fucking resist the T. Rex homage, man...

I took "There Is A Light" off for "Rubber Ring". I mean, otherwise, fuck it. Might as well just give them the Singles comp and be done with it.

And no Girlfriend in a Coma?

ya know, this probably isn't the place for it and i apologize, but i find that song hilarious. while i'm probably completely wrong, i've always thought it comes off to me as a guy who's talking to his friend whose girlfriend he can't stand is in a coma "i know, i know, it's serious..." until a friend told me he didn't see it that way at all. totally ruined the song for me, lol. it was so much better funny...

No Girlfriend in a Coma. Probably the worst Smiths single ever released. Hell, I'd pick Shakespeare's Sister over that song, if given the gamut.

It's not a bad song, it's just not a staple, IMO. I'd be disappointed to hear it chosen to be played live over, I don't know, 10 or 15 other songs I'd rather hear.

Don't you hate it when that happens? You think you have a song all figured out, and then the band will actually say what it's about, and you've read too much into and just feel stupid?

Cause I get that all the time.

I like your way of looking at Girlfriend in a Coma, Ivy. It always seemed a bit off to me, and Moz is definitely the type of singer/lyricist who could pull that off (or at least try to pull that off).

totally. ben by michael jackson is a great example of this. when i was a pre-teen or something, i fucking loved that song. then i was watching VH1 or something and found out it was about a rat and was so pissed off i literally couldn't listen to the song for years. singers should just shut their mouths when they aren't singing, lol.

I think people need to rethink their lists through a bit. It's not "your 10 favorite songs" by a certain group, its "the group's 10 best songs", songs that showcase them at their best. These could be different groups. For example, my favorite Radiohead song is Subterranean Homesick Alien, but I don't know if I'd put that in my list for their best work.

EDIT: amy, I love "What She Said" a ton. It's be a natural fit on any compilation. For some reason it works really well as a natural precursor into "William, It Was Really Nothing". Take that for what you will.
