I wouldn't question excluding it. It's great, but there are many other greats.

I guess. I mean, there are obviously a plethora of great songs by them, I just don't understand leaving off the best one.

it came down to excluding once in a lifetime or psycho killer. don't get me wrong, once in a lifetime is great, but i feel like psycho killer is more interesting lyrically and sonically. plus, it captures the band's manic energy really well in my opinion.

Psycho Killer is also great. They're both great. I found it a very hard list to make.

I stand by Perry as my main Rembrandt Pussyhorse choice, but Creep In The Cellar could easily make that list. I feel more guilty about excluding more stuff from Psychic . . . Powerless . . . Another Man's Sac. Pretty much all the 80s albums are perfection all the way through.

I'm a huge fan of Pulled Up and Girlfriend is Better actually. Fanfuckingtastic songs.

Here's my Talking Heads

1. Psycho Killer
2. New Feeling
3. Warning Sign
4. Stay Hungry
5. Cities
6. Life During Wartime
7. Born Under Punches
8. Houses In Motion
9. Burning Down The House
10. Road To Nowhere

Yeah. Any song could make this list damned near. I'm not much of a fan of Naive Melody though.

I had no idea Electric Six had ten whole songs.

that's why this thread is hard for me. it's hard to find 10 songs that really pop out for a lot of artists that aren't all on the same 2 albums or something.

the beatles

a day in the life
blackbird
helter skelter (take 2 from the anthology 3 album)
cry baby cry (also the version that's on the anthology 3 album)
happiness is a warm gun
while my guitar gently weeps
strawberry fields forever
eleanor rigby
sexy sadie
when i'm 64

i may edit this later, but i think it's a good representation of the different sides of the beatles and also reflective of my taste.

In the inevitable grand idealogical battle between Arcade Fire and Electric Six, Dick Valentine and chums will lose, hard. But no, that's not a direct retort, man. :D

I've just never heard any Electric Six songs other than Danger! High Voltage or Gay Bar. Fun songs but I can't really imagine them doing anything else?

Good list, John, but I love "American Trilogy" and "The Light Before We Land" and am dismayed by their absence.

"American Trilogy" was the last song cut. I am sure it is better than "Get Action!" but I felt a mix-maker's urge to include at least one track per album since there are only five. Also Hate is pretty much pure wonderfulness.

Also I was inspired by your taking on the challenge of Guided by Voices and I figured I'll let your list set a while before challenging it so I did

Nice list. I am not going to complain because I am not ready to do my list so I don't know what I'd have to leave off.

Also, this is what I wrote about Sad Sappy Sucker in another thread

Sad Sappy Sucker, 2001 - This compilation comes off as a bit of a mess if you try to accept it as a unit. This is because it's a compilation of 12 songs recorded for their debut album - "Birds vs Worms" was released as a 7", everything else was shelved - another early EP and a number of "Dial-a-songs" which are interesting as archival documents (you had to call a number to hear a track) but they're best left until you're really aching more more. So yeah, the first 14 tracks on this disc make a fantastic 28-minute debut album that wasn't actually released. "Dukes Up" is almost fully formed Modest Mouse, Isaac sings with the aggressiveness found on their best songs of their classic indie period rather than the preciousness found on much of the rest of the disc. Many of the songs feel like fragments, especially when held up against latter-era material. Grade: B-

i don't see why they shouldn't, if it's an exceptionally good cover and the list is mostly comprised of original material. and in some cases, a band's best songs are covers ─ look at the clash.

And, with Big Black, as long as you have Cables, Kerosene and Bad Penny, most all of the other songs could be included. Heartbeats is awesome but I love the Model and I only wanted to include one cover.

No Straight And The Narrow, Alchemy? C'mon man...

I have like 12 Spiritualized albums here, and not making a cross with Spacemen 3 was tough too.

If it absolutely had to be done, I'd switch Don't Just Do Something with The Straight and the Narrow as the "Let It Come Down" representative. I love both of them though.

Fair enough. Seeing Lord Let It Rain On Me was satisfactory enough. I adore that song.

It was also hard not putting I Didn't Mean to Hurt You. When it comes down to it. If someone wants to get into Spiritualized and Spacemen 3, they're just going to have to buy every damn album.

Spacemen 3 and Spiritualized are definitely both better appreciated on an album by album basis. And all of the albums are great so there.

Also, hmm, this makes me want to do one of these for Spacemen 3.

the Walkmen sound has matured as the band members age. as i grow older too, my listening preferences lie with their more subdued and mellow songs.
The Walkmen
"Everyone Who Pretended To Like Me Is Gone"
"Wake Up"
"We've Been Had"
"I'm Your Son" (Neil Hagerty cover)
"138th Street"
"All Hands and the Cook" (Live)
"I Lost You" (Live)
"On the Water"
"That's the Punch Line"
"The Old Revolution" (Leonard Cohen cover)
http://www.mediafire.com/?ei2izzkkkmo

i reserve "The Rat" for special occasions. like when my brother pisses all over the toilet seat and there's no one for me to shout at.

Best Of Prince

1. Purple Rain
2. Let's Go Crazy
3. Little Red Corvette
4. Kiss
5. 1999
6. Pop Life
7. 7
8. Diamonds And Pearls
9. When Doves Cry
10. Controversy

I did do a 'top 10' a few years ago as someone I know had never heard of Prince. Or heard a prince song. (He's not American... but is that really a valid excuse?)

I agree with about half your picks, I would probably do something more like this:

1. when doves cry
2. i would die 4 u
3. little red corvette
4. 1999
5. purple rain
6. controversy
7. kiss
8. black sweat
9. Diamonds and Pearls (or Cream) - only need one early 90's song :P
10. I Feel For You (or When You Were Mine) - feel like it needs a song more famously performed by someone else.

I think in actuality I put Batdance on mine heh :)

Ten song limit. I included two songs from the EP if that's any consolation. Kid For Today is my personal favorite and what I consider to be their best song.

I counted 16 acts I'm comfortable doing this with, that would span almost their entire catalogs. Links to downloads aren't necessary, right? I mean, I like just reading these to see how others view certain artists.

"Battery" was my last cut. It damn-near came down to a coin flip. I think "For Whom the Bell Tolls" might be my favorite Metallica song. I re-visited their early stuff a few months ago, and it pretty much all holds up for me. I consider Kill 'Em All to the black album to be their early stuff, and not everything from the latter still resonates with me. The first four, though, are all classics in the genre with Ride the Lightning being my personal favorite.

bmack86

I agree with Patrick there, a Metallica list needs Battery. What blows me away is a PJ Harvey list without a single song from Rid of Me. I can't see how that works.

It's funny, Saved by Old Times is the one song that, to me, prevents Microcastle from being a perfect record. I just never really cared for it. Same with Coronado.

My Deerhunter list probably looks something like this:

1. Cover Me Slowly/Agoraphobia
2. Little Kids
3. Flourescent Grey
4. Octet
5. Twilight at Carbon Lake
6. Nothing Ever Happened

I agree with Patrick there, a Metallica list needs Battery. What blows me away is a PJ Harvey list without a single song from Rid of Me. I can't see how that works.

I had "50ft Queenie" and "Rub 'til It Bleeds" as my last two cuts, I think. This should show you which type of PJ Harvey I prefer.

I don't think it's an objective opinion when it comes to comparing say ODB to Jay-Z. There is skill involved here not just what I like as a fan. Calling Old Dirty Bastard or U-God a better MC than Jay-Z is completely absurd to me. Mostly because they aren't very good. In fact ODB is flat out sloppy and lazy with his rhymes. I would rank Kanye ahead of half the Wu-Tang members and I don't think very highly of Kanye's MC skills.

I think you could make an argument for GZA of Wu but it's either hyperbole when you say anyone in Wu Tang or Mr. Fuzz is right and please don't let Mr. Fuzz be right!

Biggie, Eminem, Nas, Black Thought, Andre 3000, Rakim, Slick Rick, Kool G Rap, Big Daddy Kane, GZA, Big L, Talib Kweli, Common, Mos Def... just to name 14.

You must be the only person who didn't know what we were discussing. Nobody said anything about producing better songs. I was talking lyricist, rapping, flow etc. and I would disagree with half of your list and I am a fan of more than half of your list. That said, lets not argue. Only Chris can argue with Fuzz in this thread. I maintain the obvious that saying Old Dirty Bastard or U God are better rapper/MC's than Jay -Z is absurd. I mean, to me ODB is equivalent to Flava Flav. He's not there for his MC skills.

As to the specific Springsteen example, I think that track captures the style of Born in the USA pretty well, and I'd want to represent that album with at least one track. Never the biggest fan of the title track in its studio version.

Kerplunk is good as a whole, but I dont know what else off that album you can see as Top 10 worthy besides Welcome to Paradise, which is listed above? There's a reason they hardly play those Kerplunk songs live.

I'd put "2,000 Light Years Away" in place of "Blvd. Broken Dreams" because that is a crazy good pop punk song. And because "Blvd." is fucking terrible.

And I'd totally put "Dominated Love Slave" in my Green Day top-15, if we were doing that.

Nice...I have to agree you and others, Adult Books is right up there too. I first saw X in Tampa in 1982. The Under the Big Black Sun tour. I've seen them many times since, mostly in Santa Barbara where I used to live, but in SF too, including last Friday with the Blasters. Holy shit, I was right against the stage, right in front of Billy Zoom and I think I blew out an ear drum...seriously, I'm a little worried...I might have to get a little more serious about ear plugs.

I couldn't imagine making one of these without the biggest hit an act had, especially if it were their biggest hit by some margin.

I think you're acting as if you're actually the record label preparing a "Best Of" compilation, where you want the biggest hit to be represented, a song from every big album to be on there, etc. Everyone else is just flat out listing what they think are the band's 10 best songs.

i.e. Smells Like Teen Spirit is undoubtedly Nirvana's biggest hit, but it definitely wouldn't make my 10.

I'm treating it like a primer. What I would hand over to someone if I wanted to give them a full sense of a career in ten tracks. I'm not necessarily going full breadth though; my U2 and Springsteen lists, for example, cut off the last fifteen years of each act entirely.
