Hello world, I was curious as to how much booking Justice would cost. Around $20,000 for a private show? I've asked around, and I've heard more and less. Someone that would know please help me out with an approximate estimate. Thanks a ton.

I wonder if a band would charge more for a private show than for a public one.

Almost 48 grand.

And yeah, I am sure a private show would cost more. They'd likely have to go out of their way to attend, especially if not currently on tour, and then there's the issue of merch.

Throw in some skeezy hipster skanks along with a few bottles of JD and an 8-ball and they'd probably cut you a deal. And make the pitch in French.

i wouldn't bet on it. i've seen super star djs play private parties for $20,000 and they charge more for a festival. and i'm talking about dj mag top 5 djs. but those were dj sets obviously.

When something like that happens it's because the band/dj's were probably scheduled to perform nearby for their regular fee. Since they're already around, if you know somenone that can book them and they have some available time, well of course you are going to get a good deal.

Alot of the public prices aren't actually true. They are simply put there to provide a framework for how much the event itself costs. That is not to say omg you can book the joosticez for 5 grand, it means rather you can pay their promoter/producers 20-40 grand, and they will bring an entire show, including security, lights, sound, rigging, stage, hotel, transportation, catering, etc.

Also, blow helps.

The pictures of when Gaspard's Midi Controller was unplugged, relate to Justice's recent "DJ Sets" in support of A Cross The Universe; Consisting of the MPC, a Pioneer DJM-800 (I Believe), and Ableton Live.

The set always remains the same however, there's a recording of Justice @ Forma't playing this set, and if you watch any of the other videos or whatever media you have of them playing these recent DJ sets, you will soon realize it's exactly the same.

Now, not to discredit Soulwax / 2ManyDJs, but their (2ManyDJs) recent DJ sets have all been just about the same as well (They use CDJs however). There is a recording of their set at Creamfields, which sounded strikingly similar to what I heard them play at HARD Halloween. (Which is a great set, regardless.)

Furthermore, Boys Noize's set at Pukkelpop 08 also had many similarities to what I heard at HARD Halloween. Diplo played the same DJ Set every night opening for Justice on the Myspace Music Tour.

I don't know man... What are we to think of this?

Thats not what I mean. Are you daft or something? (No pun intended.) What I meant was, that picture doesn't even LOOK like it was taken at a live set. It looks more like they are in a studio, or doing a private show or something.

And rainstorm... lots of bands play the same setlist every night. why aren't electronic artists allowed to play the same set every night?

Yeah, my biggest complaint about Metallica live, is that their setlist is completely unwavering for their entire tour...

I mean of course, my biggest complaint besides the "metallica" part that is...

Tons of bands do it, they have a system, they practice it, they get it right, they dont change from it...

do metric setlists change?

do roger waters setlists change??

do jack johnsons setlists change...bro???

Wheres the beef?

frozen pilgrim
12-01-2008, 03:35 PM
hahaha I wouldn't ever get mad at justice for playing the same setlist over and over if they were ACTUALLY PLAYING IT. the bigger the production, the more the show has to be rehearsed. simple fact. arena/stadium tours with big light shows REHEARSE. BFD.
what blows goat pieces about justice is that they're not even performing. if you're going to press play on a cd and toy with the EQs a bit, at least mix up the setlist.

Fuck all this noise. If you have any skills, any hair on your nut sack, you do not DJ the same set night after night. I'm not going to get into the live performance debate cuz its not what I'm talking about. Im talking about DJ sets. Growing up in and around SF bay area - you were a poser and a chump if you played the same set over and over. You would catch shit if you even played the same tunes as another DJ. I dont give a fuck about technology, CDs are fucking whack and all these big name artists relying on them and playing nothing but CDs should be ashamed of themselves. Not saying they shouldnt play any CDs (I do understand the need and benefits of them) but its bullshit, it really is.

frozen pilgrim
12-01-2008, 05:03 PM
although I also dislike CDs as a DJ format. but not because it's "faking" or anything. just because at this point, it's cheaper, more accessible, and even better sounding to use a laptop and control surfaces. so CDjs are kind of elitist in that sense.

"Hi guys,

frozen pilgrim
12-09-2008, 07:47 PM
my stuff? not a lot.
I don't want to reveal exactly what my mixer is, but it's a competitor to the pioneer DJM-800 that's less than a third of the price. think the 400 to 600 range. I prefer its' sound, effects, layout, and midi capabilities to both the pioneer and the xone 92. the laptop is actually my friend airleth's. but yeah. I have a non-mac laptop I usually use. and the trigger finger is $150-300, depending on where you look. so...
two grand in total maybe? plus a high-res mouse and an external hard drive... yeah. it's just the "party in a bag" kit.

or did you think those pictures of justice's lemurs were mine. god damn those things are expensive.
but a word to the wise- don't buy 'em. in less than a year, asus will have fully multi-touch capable laptops. I've already seen a test unit used to DJ. you guys have no idea. it's gonna change everything

since we're on the equipment listing thing, i'll jump in on that...

Korg Trinity Workstation
Korg ES-1 Electribe Sampler
Korg microKorg Synth
Roland TB-303 Bass Line
Roland HPD-10 Handsonic
Roland MC-505 Groovebox
Mackie Onyx 1220 Mixer
CreativeLabs SB Audigy ZS Platinum I/O Sound Card

That's all the hardware that I own, and I use pretty much all of it on a regular basis. Maybe not the Handsonic. That's kind of a toy. The brains of the operation is definatley the Trinity, which is where I do the majority of the sequencing and mixing. I have the HD Recorder Expansion, which helps a lot. It is about time to upgrade though, and I have been eyeing the M3 pretty hard. I'd like the large keybed so that I can eventually add the full RADIAS board, (not the internal expansion board) so here's hoping President Obama hooks up the stimulus package.

seriously? come on now. The 800 is quickly gaining on the xone92's hold on the club standard. The only thing I don't like about the 800 is that the effects are TOO easy to use and tend to get abused after too many drinks. Other than that it sounds awesome.

Just go ahead and reveal what you're talking about. I promise I wont hate. I understand the 800 and 92 are exceedingly expensive. The only 800 competitors that I can think of in that price range are beringers or something. I'm genuinely curious. If you're worried about your mixer gaining in popularity and price if the secret gets out I promise you that isn't going to happen.

Maybe you guys should watch the Justice DVD and you'll gain new respect for them. In the DVD Xavier plays the piano on a couple different occasions with skill and grace. He also gets attacked by a fan with a liquor bottle back stage right before going on which splits his hand open and he still goes on and plays his set, having to take a break to wash the blood off his hand and then returns to play. Not to mention, THEIR MUSIC SOUNDS GREAT. I really don't care how they made it or came up with it, it rocks my face off. Daft Punk uses tons of samples and yet their revered as electro gods. Fancier equipment does not impress me. The fact that they repeat sets is because they, unlike the random DJ in the "bay", have a HIT RECORD. The fans want to hear their hit record, not mixes of other songs. They have been booed when mixing other songs such as a killer mix of Rage at a recent performance. Bottom line is, electronic music is not like other music, but if you can take it for what its worth(music to party to), then you should have no reason to knit pick it apart. JUSTICE!!!!!!!!

that sebastian remix of killing in the name? they deserve to be booed if they're still trying to trot out that sorry excuse for a remix.

electronic music is not like other music...
...take it for what its worth(music to party to)

you think electronic music's only value is "music to party to"? that explains your awful taste

Hmmm do tell me besides raves, parties, festivals, where else do we hear techno? I blast it in my car sometimes(while day dreaming I was partying instead of driving to work)or I listen to it while I work out to get pumped up. Okay so it's music to party to or get pumped to. Massive Attack moves my soul because of their lyrics. Most techno is singing about xtc and partying, sorry dude, maybe you shouldn't take it so seriously, oh wait, i forgot, you're trying to be a DJ, lolz.

I love it when this happens. someone posts something so hilariously ignorant, that there's no way to further dissect it's idiocy.

on the way to work today, I think I'll listen to some jeff mills, brian eno, and then the mystery of the yeti PT 1 from TIP world

Oh I love it when this happens, someone(me)makes a completely valid point(in my original post about watching their documentary to better understand/respect them)and someone(frozen) completely ignores it and goes on to stick to their closed minded opinion, picking and choosing statements that I said that were hardly the point(because had he addressed my point he wouldn't have anything to say)Justice was just nominated for a grammy, have any of these artists you've listed been nominated for a grammy? No I bet not, they must be that techno you listen to with a star bucks and a cigarette, completely sober.

also, if you want to actually read some of the thread, you'll find out my opinion of justice. which is not what you think.

as long as there's other stuff for me to see, I'm happy.

heh I've said over and over, they make danceable music, I just
a) can't stand people who think they (justice) are "all that"
b) hate the scene they've started and the fashion they push
c) think their fans ought to be outraged that they've been FAKING
d) also, 400 uncleared samples? really? you couldn't program ANYTHING yourself?!

lol do you really think they're trying to "push" their fashion on people? Oh brother, you really do take this scene WAY too seriously.

I think they're horrible fakes for decieving people on their recent DJ tour. I otherwise think they produce danceable music. I don't think they're worth fifty grand a night.

I also think it's unfortunate that you only think EDM is for partying or being pumped up. it can be just as expressive a form as any other. hence my comment on your taste. if you think electronic music is that shallow, maybe listening to justice has something to do with it. that's why I made a lame, condescending comment about listening to jeff mills (excellent techno, and techno as in actual techno, not like the blanket term). I'm going to go look for a youtube of 'the art of barrier breaking'.

found it. this song stimulates my mind. no other way I can describe it.

and yeah... I chuckled at the comment about me listening to my music sober at starbucks with a cigarette.

-I'm constantly medicated on pot
-I haven't had a starbucks coffee in years (tim hortons, motherfucker)
-I don't smoke cigarettes

Like I said, Massive Attack is one electronic group I listen to for other reasons, same with Portishead. Those groups are trip hop, electronic infused with vocalists and actual lyrics though. I would put Justice in the same genre of techno as Daft Punk. I met this kid once who was tripping on acid and talking about how he loves Daft's "message" and I said, "what, drugs?" and he quickly replied, "no! Unity!"lol....and he was on drugs....um yeah, unity. PLUR dude, PLUR. I respect eletronica, and I understand it has many different sub genres. But we were talking about Justice, one band in one type, obviously the type to get fucked up and pumped up to, right? Call it shallow, call it what you will, my original point was that I don't care because it sounds good. I would be happy to check out new music at any point, I am OPEN MINDED, so please, do share.

I can see why it would stimulate your brain if you were high as a kite, lol. How is the song made? Is it with a keyboard or computer? Maybe a little background on me will make you understand my taste better...both of my parents are classically trained jazz musicians. My father has a gold record, was on the Ed Sullivan show, and was inducted into the Long Island Hall of Fame. I respect technical ability. But, I am a writer, and so lyrics are what "moves me". Technicalities stimulate me such as an instrumental jazz song or a funky Parliment song. I can appreciate a lot of music for that(even electronic) but lyrics are what really makes a song a song to me. SEE MASSIVE ATTACK. Do you listen to them? Dissolved Girl, Protection, Angel, all great lyrics.

The fact that they repeat sets is because they, unlike the random DJ in the "bay", have a HIT RECORD. The fans want to hear their hit record, not mixes of other songs.

^^ This is one of the idiotic statements ever made on this board.
