View Full Version : The Festivals Thread

I was going to wait until my 3,000 post to start this thread but fuck it, I'll just do it now. What festivals have you been to? What are the best and worst festivals you've attended? I'm curious to find out who has been to what festivals. I'm sure many of us were at the same fests and didn't realize it. I know there's lots of people that have good festival stories that they could share.

The festivals I've been to worth mentioning are:

Coachella 08-we all know who was there
Lollapalooza 03 - Jane's Addiction, Incubus, Queens of the Stone Age
Lollapalooza 05 - Pixies, Primus, Billy Idol, Widespread Panic, STS9
Bonnaroo 04 - Primus, David Bryne, The Dead, Bob Dylan
Bonnaroo 05 - Trey Anastasio, 2 Widespread Panic sets, The Allman Brothers
Bonnaroo 06 - Radiohead, Tom Petty, Phil Lesh and Friends, Beck, MMJ
Bonnaroo 07 - Tool, The Police, The White Stripes, The Flaming Lips
All Good 05 - Les Claypool, String Cheese Incident, Umphrey's Mcgee
Gigantour 05 - Fear Factory, Dream Theater, Dillinger Escape Plan, Megadeth
Indiana Funk Fest 06 - The Family Stone (sans Sly), Victor Wooten
Hookahville 05 - The Wailers, Robert Randolph, Particle, Galactic
Hookahville 06 - Blues Traveler, Yonder Mountain String Band
Warped Tour 03 - Flogging Molly, AFI, Rancid, Andrew WK, Poison the Well
Vegoose 07 - Rage, Daft, Iggy, Muse, STS9
Ozzfest 02 - System of a Down, Meshuggah, Rob Zombie, Ozzy
Ozzfest 03 - Marilyn Manson, Korn, Voivod, Ozzy
Ozzfest 04 - (the best one) Judas Priest, Slayer, Lamb of God, Black Sabbath
Ozzfest 05 - Mastodon, In Flames, Iron Maiden
Detour 08 - Mars Volta, Gogol Bordello, The Presets, The Bloody Beetroots
Wakarusa 06 - Flaming Lips, Buckethead, Bela and the Flecktones, Gov't Mule
Langerado 06 - STS9, Umphrey's Mcgee, The Black Crowes, Buckethead
10,000 Lakes 06 - String Cheese Incident, Trey Anastasio, Umphrey's Mcgee
Street Scene 08 - Beck, Devo, Justice, STS9
Tall Stacks, Cincinnati 06 - Wilco, Al Green, Buddy Guy, MMW, Dr. John
Memphis Beale Street Music Festival 07 - Allman Brothers, 3 6 Mafia, Steely Dan, Social Distortion, The Ohio Players

I've been to many smaller, jamband fests that aren't really worth mentioning. I always had a good time though. I went to lots of Scribblejams too.

And probably around 10 or so fests at this awesome venue: http://www.nlqp.com/ Check out the quarry pictures, that place is beautiful, it has to rival the Gorge and Red Rocks.
Some of the highlights there were STS9 and P-Funk.

The worst festival I've been to was probably either Ozzfest 05 or warped tour. The best festival I've ever been to was easily Bonnaroo 07, even without MMJ. Every set I saw was great other than the Police. The Tool show was the best show I've ever seen, better than Portishead.

is was like 100 for Make Music. ridiculous! Kinky still managed to get some life out of me,
after Raveonettes sucked it from me.

i've yet to see the Flaming Lips in a festival setting. that would make my showgoing complete. come to think of it, i dont want to see other people's festival lists because the Lips would be all over the place.

Yeah, I didn't realize how many times I've seen the Flips until I typed all of that out. I'm not a big fan because their music is pretty simple and boring to me. The live shows are fun with all of the confettit and lazers but it's just a coincidence that they were often at the same fests I was at. Like Michael Franit, I can't escape that fucker

I didn't search but if we do, then it's been long enough since people have posted in it so that a new one isn't a bad thing.

Vegoose 07 (day 1)- Daft Punk, Queens of the Stone Age

Ah, I forgot all about Vegoose. I also went in 07 also. I wish I could have gone the first two years, the lineup was very stellar all three years. RIP Vegoose.

Bumbershoot 05'
Coachella 08'
Bumbershoot 08'

That's my humble list up to this date. I'd say Bumbershoot 08' was the least enjoyable of them all since I only could make the Monday lineup and getting into the small venue for the Flobots was a complete joke. I don't regret attending any of them though.

worst: neville brothers

Really? I actually enjoyed that set quite a bit. How far back were you? I was all the way up front, blazed out of my mind, dancing. It was fun. Then again, almost everyone was fucking awesome that year so they could have played a great set and still be one of the worst ones you saw. Haha, Death Cab. I made sure I was as far away from them as possible. You should've seen Oysterhead, that was the easiest choice of the year for me.

Bonnaroo 2007
Best- motherfucking WOLFMOTHER,

I had a lot of fun during their set but they didn't really impress me or anything. I was standing right by the people who started that "Aussie, aussie, aussie, oy, oy, oy" chant about halfway through the set.

sbessiso
11-17-2008, 01:06 AM
Well Backwater, I'm a huuuge fan of their album and their set just rocked so hard. Plus, I think the lead singer is really cute and the first thing he did was take his shirt off. The eye make up and tighty jeans were a bonus as well. Sometime we watch concerts differently, huh

JSam67
11-17-2008, 01:08 AM
I liked Wolfmother a lot at Lolla '06, my favorite set besides Raconteurs. Good old fashioned rock show. And, I fucking love The White Unicorn.

Backwater
11-17-2008, 01:13 AM
I'm glad you like Yard Dogs Road Show. In 06? I believe, I remember walking around Centeroo when there weren't any bands I had to see at the time, tripping balls, and wandering into the tent where they were performing. I was like, "What in the fucking hell is going on here?!?! What did I just get myself into?!?!" It's like some twistedly awesome nightmare circus freakshow. I felt like I walked into a Tim Burton movie. That shit was fucking crazy.

sbessiso
11-17-2008, 01:17 AM
it was 2007! Youre the only other person who knows them besides my friends!! We made sure to watch them a second time. The mix of songs, magic, skits, burlesque was just so unique to us! They did a late-night set at Langerado, I was the only one of my friends that made it. Everyone else passed out, poor little buggers.

And......there it is.

Anyway:

Ozzfest 2005: Black Sabbath, Mastodon, Bury Your Dead, In Flames

Coachella 2007: Rage and Manu Chao were great.

Street Scene 2007: Muse, Bad Brains, Ozomatli

Vegoose 2007: Daft Punk, Rage, Muse, Iggy, Public Enemy

Bonnaroo 2008: MMJ, Pearl Jam, Metallica, Sigur Ros, The Raconteurs

Lolla 2008: Rage, Lupe Fiasco, MGMT, Toadies

My favorite festival was probably Bonnaroo. My least favorite.....Ozzfest. Though I was only at Lolla on Saturday, it was a good day.

Backwater
11-17-2008, 06:34 AM
Ahh, no! You were just one year too late on Ozzfest. 04 was the best one ever, and 05 was probably the worst. I've never seen a decline in the lineup of a festival from one year to the next, unbelievable. My jaw dropped to the floor when I saw the 04 lineup, in a good way, and my jaw dropped to the floor when I saw the 05 lineup, but this time in a very bad way. I still went for the hell of it, but it was a waste of time and money. Iron Maiden fucking blows.

I thought Bright Eyes and Elvis C were both slightly disappointing. Conor didn't know what to do with his time and Elvis had that New Orleans thing going on which was sort of boring.

Sonic Youth was great at that festival too.

I was also a casual fan, Whip It was the only song I knew of theirs. You have no idea how much better that show got as it went on, by the end they were kicking so much ass. The first few songs were definitely the worst. It took them a while to get into the swing of things so it wasn't one of the best shows I've ever seen or anything but it was for sure the best of the festival. They were better than Beck, Justice, Spiritualized or anyone else.

There is objective good and bad in music. You don't think Mozart and Beethoven are objectively good and Good Charlotte and Simple Plan are objectively bad?

What a joke of a band. They seriously have to be one of the worst bands on the planet. How did they ever get as popular as they are.

Did you actually see Tool? Both times? If you hate them so much, why see them a second time? If not, only bands that were actually seen and heard can count towards a best/worst list.

I like this quite thread a lot... makes me feel good about myself but also shows I have a bit of catching up to do!

Major ones:

Coachella '07 (sad because it was my first, amazing cause it was my best)
Best: Rage, Arcade, Sonic Youth, & Explosions
Worst: I saw some bad ones Sunday camping for Rage, but in terms of disappoinment, probably Nightwatchman... but even he wasn't bad.

Vegoose '07 (Saturday)
Best: QOTSA, Iggy, Daft, Battles, Public Enemy
Worst: Blonde Redhead or Mastodon, but both weren't bad at all.

Coachella '08
Best: Animal Collective, MMJ, Prince, Portishead, Verve
Worst: Minus The Bear and Swervedriver were kinda disappointing

Bonnaroo '08
Best: MMJ, Pearl Jam, Broken Social Scene & Sigur Ros
Worst: Gah... nothing... I guess I'll just put Kanye for lateness?

Outside Lands '08
Best: Broken Social Scene, Radiohead, Ben Harper & Liars
Worst: I guess Kaki King was pretty boring...

The "worst" section is officially impossible for me haha.

Smaller fests I see others putting:
Street Scene '00 or '01 (my first concert!)
Street Scene '06 (Yeah Yeah Yeahs!)
94/9 Independence Jam (Kings of Leon!)
Street Scene '07 (the only lame festival. still... Muse!)
Holiday Hootnennay (QOTSA!)
Street Scene '08 (Spiritualized! TVOTR!)
Detour '08 (The Volta!)

yeah that's all.... hoping to add SXSW (if that counts?), Sasquatch, Pemberton (if it stays), Lolla (if they fucking fix their set times!), APW, and Voodoo next year, lineups pending, and of course every night I pray for the return of Vegoose...

What do you guys think are the best and worst festivals as far as production, organization and atmosphere?

Everyone knows which one I think is the best, but the worst major festival that I've been to was Lollapalooza. Unless you consider Sunset Junction a major festival. I didn't go to Pemberton but that sounds like an amazing lineup but amazingly bad planning and organization. Thoughts?

paulb
11-21-2008, 01:18 AM
Yes, Pemberton was the most gong show awful thing Ive ever seen.... the music was amazing....but having a capacity limit on the electronic tent/age limit...having to stand in line for hours to get in.... it was fuckin awful.... making people park at the airport 10min away from the venue, and make them load all their gear/tents/coolers into school buses and having it be a free for all..... it was a joke.

Lolla is set up nicely... no atmosphere at all though....

Coachella=perfection

I love Sasquatch and how it is set up... 3 stages, all far away from each other, great sound, the only thing against it is there is nothing to do at the gorge...

Hurricane Festival = mud gong show... there are no lights late night, and to get to the other stages you have to walk in the dark through mud, and it just becomes a hassel and not even worth seeing the band who are playing...

That sucks that there's nothing to do at Sasquatch besides the music. I'll still probably go next year because I'm going to 3 big fests next year. I was planning on the two obvious ones plus a return to Langerado but now that they moved it to Miami there's no way in hell I would go to that, no matter what the lineup is. I haven't been to the Gorge yet and if the lineup is as good as it was last year, I'm there.

last year had such an awesome lineup, im still bitter that I didnt go...but I saw REM in Vancouver that weekend, so it was all good...

but Sasquatch is a great festival, go if you have the chance...

Id love to do Ultra next year....but its based on 1 artists touring schedule.
