I know some of you are aware of this show but for those that aren't, I hope you enjoy it.
Later ... with Jools Holland is a BBC music show, shot live in studio with 4 or 5 musical guests each week that play 2 or 3 songs each. There is no theme, it's a real mixed bag of guests some of which will occasionally jump in with others to lend a hand (Bonnie Raitt played slide guitar for Robbie Williams on 'Angels') and Stereophonics played with The Black Crowes on 'Twice as Hard'
Official site : http://www.bbc.co.uk/later/
I've picked a few vids from YT that I really really like. Post up some of your faves ....
Radiohead, 'There There'

REM, 'Nightswimming'

Mary J Blige, 'No More Drama'

I love this show. It can make or break a band, and the performances always have a bit of an edge. I just wish Jools Holland wasn't on it.
That There There is epic in the old fashioned Biblical cataclysm kind of way.
Check out the Owen Pallett/ Final Fantasy guest appearrance, conducting for the Last Shadow Puppets!

I have a few of the tapings of the American version of this show with Jools then with David Sandborn who took over after he left. Not too crazy with the BBC version that has everyone rodeo style in a room and him sitting behind a piano. The performances are always spot on though.

Giving some love to this show too. I've got lot of A+ quality audio and video d/ls (that I took from various sites ... they are mostly classic performances by many famous British bands when they were starting in the industry / virtually unknown here in states).

I really do love Owen Pallett to gay little pieces.
lol @ Win's pretendy guitar playing. Also, I love that Jools Holland managed to get their first ever UK performance, and then introduced them as Arcade Power. Nice one, Jools.
One thing that always drove me nuts - KT Tunstall.
On record, Tunstall is bland, innoffensive Gray's Anatomy fodder. But her Jools performance is fucking tremendous, it's one of the most amazing things I've ever seen, and I kept meaning to put it in the Best Performance threads earlier on....
I still watch it slack-jawed like a halfwit.

No. Completely different reasons for having bands on. Jools picks bands because he likes them. The talk shows have bands on as a distraction of sorts.

The talk shows have bands on because the bands' record labels are part of the same conglomerate that owns the network. There are mega corporations that own insane amounts of the media, and they use these outlets to advertise themselves. It is the same principle as Beyonce being in the remake of the Pink Panther. The company owned the rights to the old Pink Panther, they also owned beyonce's label. They put her in the movie so that they could use her as a tool, not only to sell in the box office, but also to sell the inevitable single that went with the movie.

snl can give bands a real boost. shame you have to sit through so much awful comedy to get to the performances.
I like jools holland's approach. three parts music to one part interview. nobody trying to be funny. nobody else does a music show with such integrity. (except maybe godrich. I haven't seen his basement show yet.) it's like top of the pops, except it's actually good. I download many of the jools holland shows. yay for the internet.
a single episode of jools holland has more quality than an entire year's worth of programming on mtv. there I said it.
