If you could have Saturday your way, what would your changeups be?

I would cry and die a happy little girl if things went like this:

Elvis Costello > David Byrne > David Bowie

That's a trifecta of AWESOME right there. Make it happen, GV. Make it fuckin' happen.

BSS and arcade fire make you ashamed to be canadian? you make me ashamed to be canadian.

although i would get rid of the stars/metric stuff in favour of, let's say, Godspeed You! Black Emperor.

Also, Leonard Cohen, Do Make Say Think, Caribou, Holy Fuck, and Shout Out Out Out Out would all be nice additions, as far as canadian acts are concerned.

Cannot believe I didn't get flamed for my Morrissey > Talking Heads > Coldplay post.

On a serious note...

The National > Arcade Fire > Bowie

Annuals > Belle & Sebastian > Flaming Lips

Animal Collective > Portishead > Aphex Twin

Wolf Parade > TV On The Radio > Yeah Yeah Yeahs

Panda Bear > Grizzly Bear > Radiohead

Broken Social Scene > Flaming Lips > Arcade Fire > Neutral Milk Hotel reunion

that last one is beyond fantasy for me.

if you could see one or the other, why not both opening for bowie? because QOTSA and of montreal don't go together? since when has that mattered at coachella? or is it something else

also, of montreal does not belong in the sahara. they belong outdoors, like they were in 07 (outdoor theater)

i was just saying that there's no flow between the three. order, you're right, doesn't necessarily matter (Stars --> Gogol).

but i will disagree with Of Montreal's stage. their 07 set was great, but the crowd was quieted by the heat and Barnes was distracted by the sound. it did not reflect an Of Montreal show properly. the Sahara tent at night would work wonders. the lighting, the music, and the nighttime atmosphere would all tie in nicely. Of Montreal can put on some great dance fun and i'm sure the Saharians will appreciate some trippy interludes.

I agree with what you're saying for sure about of montreal needing a 'better' stage/setting than what they had in 07. for sure. I wasn't sure about the intimacy of the mainstage until kraftwerk/portishead, but I'm convinced now that with high enough production value, and at sunset/after dark with the new spotlights, the main stage is magical.
I was envisioning:

elaborate production for of montreal (i.e. whatever they're currently touring that apparently requires large proscenium theaters) with them on at sunset from say 8-9 (and before people cry out "not big enough! no way!", I submit to you that oh, I don't know, mark oliver and paul van dyke are spinning back to back in the sahara starting at 7:30, alleviating the pressure on the mainstage of being mainSTREAM)

then queens of the stone age from 9:20-10:30

then david bowie from 11-1:15.
I know I'd mainstage-camp for that.

rage patton

Have you ever seen Rob Zombie live? He doesn't need White Zombie with him. Besides, Rob solo has better tracks than White Zombie. Zombie plays More Human Than Human and Thunderkiss '65, as well. What more could you want?

i gotcha.
i just don't see Of Montreal as a main stage band, though.

hang on, I'll just repost on the new page to avoid a subsequent three pages of lurker-related misunderstanding >.<

I've never listened to QOTSA. Where should I start?

frozen pilgrim
10-29-2008, 03:35 PM
ooooh!

you can't go wrong with either "R", or "songs for the deaf" to start

then listen to the self titled debut, then the other two ('lullabies to paralyze' and 'era vulgaris')

LooseAtTheZoo
10-29-2008, 03:38 PM
What band are they similar to? Bowie-ish, I'm assuming, with all the talk about this main-stage progression?

frozen pilgrim
10-29-2008, 03:49 PM
nah, they don't sound like david bowie. they are a rock band, plain and simple. they get tagged as 'robot rock', 'desert rock', 'stoner rock', hard rock, metal, and occasionally pop. youtube "the lost art of keeping a secret", then "go with the flow", and then look for 'long slow goodbye', and 'song for the deaf'.
I don't know exactly why they fit with bowie, but somehow in my mind and to my ears, they do. also, keep in mind that bowie's last big tour was with NIN, and NIN's next tour was with QOTSA. and more than anything, QOTSA are as local to coachella as a band can get, so that adds another element to why they fit in an otherwise strange slot
