I think too, for me at least, I feel cautious about 'roo specifically because allergens, heat and humidity are going to kick my ass, and what's left of me after that will be raped by 4AM sets and starting the week(end) off with a night of probably no sleep. So I am going to be ragged even without considering this.

If I dig it I can always try it again later in my more hospitable environment and go more crazy then. :)

My first one took about 75 minutes to kick in (rough estimate), but I never peaked until I took the 2nd one and had 2 pills working in my system. I was just following Ally's instructions and the night was perfect.

I'm not talking to you Tommy, everyone knows by now you have your specific plan and there's nothing nobody can say to change your mind. There's no way in hell I'm trying to argue/convince you of anything. Follow Ally's instructions, that's fine with me.

Tommy, I think I posted this before, but you are the first person I've seen rolling who was not fucked up to the point of being retarded. So I trust your judgment. Perhaps I would not enjoy getting as fucked up as other people would suggest. :) I enjoy still having some degree of control of myself.

:) I play it safe. I'm glad I wasn't TOO fucked up. The night was 100% perfect for me and I have Ally to thank for it. So I'm using her logic going forward. You said I met Steve that night, right?

ha im the same way. there's a meter inside of me that never lets me do too much or go overboard. it's actually like that with everything now, even drinking. i dont think i'll ever lose it or get puking wasted drunk again, my brain won't let me!

Oh honey I'm only a few years out from getting puking or blacking out wasted, and I've really had to draw a line to get out of that. My problem, no matter what I'm at, is too much/too fast. Then my body catches up and says :nono

chiapet
05-11-2009, 01:36 PM
Tommy, I'm not going to argue with Salah or others. I think there is an age & experience gap here. While we're newbies to this particular substance, we've already been around the proverbial block.

I did not put any real thought into my use when I was Salah's age. It took having friends OD too many times, some died, others have records, ruined marriages/lost custody of kids, maybe just flunked out of school.

This is way TMI and more personal than I usually post on the internet but what really changed for me was I had an ex who was responsible for a lot of my 'experimentation', some things I never should have tried. I never shared needles with him but we were less than careful in some of our other activities. Carelessness that was caused by being fucked up. I got the call from him like 1 year after we split, that he tested positive. Thankfully I was fine but let me tell you, if there was ever a gut check about what I was doing with my life, waiting for almost 2 weeks for those test results was definitely one.

Now I am cautious about what I do and whether it will fuck up me or my life. Not to the point of being boring (I think), I still do careless things but it's always a calculated risk.

Well, since it's TMI time, if I were taking it totally preventatively, I take like 1 every 6-8 hours while I'm awake. You can take another one at any time during that if you're actually having symptoms. It's not something you want to keep doing day after day, because it will fuck with your digestion and give you a terrible stomachache eventually. But it's something I've done for like a day or two, going rafting or something, where there will not be any toilets at all. :)

What the fuck ever. In real life we don't all do drugs all the time. We don't even do drugs for every festival. There's a smart way to go about it, believe it or not. A couple of people might be apprehensive about it, so there was a discussion.

Tommy, did you know Calexico played a show at UNM right after Coachella? Short set.

Wow. Two Minutemen covers (I assume). Sounds like fun.

As an example of pillreports, I'm going to put in the data for the ones I had a Coachella. I remember that they had a telephone on them. Might have been yellow but I'm not sure. So under "Search Reports," I'm going to put "telephone" next to "Pill Logo," leave the color empty since I'm not sure, choose Region: North America, Subregion: South West, and I get results:

http://www.pillreports.com/index.php?page=search_reports&sent=1&name=&logo=telephone&colour=&region=1&sub_region=5&percent_rating=0&pp=10&submit.x=48&submit.y=21&submit=Search+Reports

If I read through several different reports, I can get a good idea of what the pills are all about. They're called pokeballs, they have a high dosage of MDMA, and there's nothing too sketchy in them. Not exactly brain surgery.

You guys might be talking me into David Byrne more and more, but I don't know yet. I'm going to Lolla, but who knows who Beastie Boys will go up against. I wouldn't choose them over Tool, but I highly doubt that will happen.

I like Talking Heads, but I'm not that familiar with David Byrne's solo stuff. And I grew up on Beastie Boys. But hanging out with you guys during Byrne's set is really a huge selling point.

Listen to the most recent solo work, Everything That Happens Will Happen Today. My Life in the Bush of Ghosts is also an incredible Eno/Byrne collaboration.

so i finally put together a tentative roo schedule...

I'm now wondering if Alchemy and I are the only people on the board who think so highly of Lost Souls. John (Mountmccabe) said he thinks Doves is a boring band. That really surprised me. Maybe I'm just a sucker for music that has a ton of layers and harmonizing. Another example of why I love music. We all hear different things when we hear certain bands. :) I was turned off by Wilco right away a few years ago because I thought it was boring music. It still kind of is (sorry Fax) but I'm appreciating the musicianship a lot more.

a problem with "random" is that I enjoy the Doves songs I've listened to in the past but have no idea what album they're from. I tend to not even observe what the song titles are. :/

faxman75
05-11-2009, 03:17 PM
Tommy, I think music is really a very personal thing. Different albums hit different poeple in different ways is all.

My first impression of Wilco was with the album "being there". I figured two discs for the price of one, great way to start. I listened to it a couple of times and though it was just kind of alright. Then I picked up Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and was like whoahh hold it, this is pretty fucking great. The first track I am Trying to Break Your Heart reminded me so much of Beck with the experimental sounds and the sleepy voice, so the next thing I did was put a bunch of Beck music and a bunch of wilco music on a CD together and before you know it my love Wilco was born. The songs just resonated with me. It was rock n' roll with no gimmicks and I loved it.

As far as Lost Souls goes, I have listened to about 6 songs on the album once, so it's not like I even have a solid opinion of it yet. I found a few songs boring on first listen and you had the knee jerk reaction of "you don't like layering do you", I didn't think it had anything to do with layering. Some music hits and other music doesn't. Sometimes I force myself to have patience and keep throwing an album in a rotation even if I don't like everything i'm hearing.

I keep telling my Arcade Fire "funeral" story as an example. I liked two songs, Neighborhood #1 and #3. That was it for like a year of listening to that album at least 30 times or so. Sometime around Coachella 2007 it finally started to hit me more and something personal happened that made me get really obsessive about that album.

There are a lot of variables that go into whether or not I dig a band, album or even a song. It will never be chalked up to one particular blanket think like layering.

Amy, I have as part of a camping shower rig with one of those privacy curtain/stall things. It was incredibly awkward and hard to keep the thing from collapsing. Heh. Using that on its own would feel approximately like rinsing yourself off with a low-pressure garden hose. Maybe it's just me but only cleaning my arms/legs doesn't really make me feel very clean, and short of stripping down without any privacy, I don't think the water bag would help much.

I think I'm just going to buy some jugs of water for hygienic use and maybe spray myself off with water or something.

So we agree then. Music is wonderful and personal to people. And different people hear different things. I hope you weren't taking exception to anything I said because you basically expanded on my very point.

I formed an opinion that you prefer more simple music where one of the instruments stands out at any given point rather than when a few of them are working together and one really doesn't outshine the other. I based this, not on your opinion of Lost Souls, but of the bands that you've expressed a lot of interest in. Wilco, Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers and The National are the three that come to mind. I'm not suggesting those are bad bands, because they aren't. I was just observing a pattern of styles that you seem to be drawn to. Another example is that you graviated more toward The Bends than OK Computer or Kid A.

Edit: One of the exceptions to Wilco's "simplicity" is Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. I know. Trust me. :)

Hah, you'll have to let me know how that works out, Mark. My skin can be sensitive to some soaps so I've passed on that (because I'm too lazy to go to REI and read the ingredients). Maybe I'll get around to doing that before Roo.

I'm pretty sure my plan will be:
- lots of baby wipes
- alcohol wipes if I am feeling unsanitary (like, hands after touching port-a-potty)
- jugs of water + spray bottle to sort of spray myself down at camp
- hippie-ish bottle soap to use in the trench sinks to clean arms and face
- lots of powder
- lots of deodorant
- some sort of essential oil so you can't smell me so much :D

Sulfuric water does smell bad and sometimes tastes a little off. Lemon helps a lot (even packaged, like the little lemon squeeze things), or if you really can't stand it, using that powdered tea or lemonade mix, though tea dehydrates so you wouldn't want to be putting that into every glass.

This thread is full of fail today. Brown water in the roo fountain? drugs that give you the shits? and arguing. Bad roo thread. :lool

Tommy, I don't exception though your theories are based on three bands and that's kinda pigeon holing someone's taste.

You use the word layered often and we started to discuss this via text but here you can elaborate more. I would say some bands albums have a layered sound but the same band can also put out something that isn't so layered.

So the term layered is what i'm still trying to grasp. I admit when it comes to genre discussions I can get frustrated and find it silly pretty quick but layered isn't a genre, so i'm not understanding how you are classifying layered music. You use Radiohead and the Doves as examples. What i'm missing is how you can say Wilco for instance isn't layered. What about Calexico? The number of instruments being played simultaneously isn't any greater with the Doves or Radiohead and that's what i'm taking as your definition of layered music.

So, i'm not being contrary i'm simply still trying to get grounded with that term as a starting point. I'm interested in this discussion though. Teach me.

For instance, can a band be layered in one song and simplistic in another? Album to album? Show me two you tube examples of the difference between layered and not layered. I just think it's more song by song for the most part than it is band to band maybe? You see, i'm just confused and want to understand, then we can debate layered and simplistic on better footing.

It's fucking horrid. Seriously he is using the Rain Man voice on ever song so far. It distracts from the rhymes and gets annoying very fast. I mean it was cool and interesting for a song or two but all three songs he has released so far uses those same filters to take out all the bass in his and Dre's voice(In "Old Times Sake"). 3am is much better but he still is using that same Rain Man voice, granted not as much but it is still there. He should have ended it with "When I'm Gone." I am still gonna give the full album a chance but so far I am very dissapointed.

Faxino, here we go. What I mean by layered and not layered. First, by virtue of it being music, it is most likely layered in some capacity. What I'm talking about is something not unlike what an orchestra does. Second, music doesn't haven't to have a lot of layers to be good. I'm not equating the two. I like plenty of music that doesn't use the concepts I have in mind.

Here is an example of something that I like a lot that is pretty much just straight forward. And how could it not be? There are two guys in the band.

3X_lOZI9KWI

The instruments are obviously working well with each other, but it has more more of that straight forward feel. Again, I dig this song a long and it is awesome live.

Here is an example of a Radiohead song that I think is more straight forward. Now, with more people in the band, most of their songs have a lot going on. It was hard to find an example that wasn't just a slow song with a lot of ambience.

ayTU4UhVQAI

Now here's a Radiohead song that I love that has a lot going on. Different guitar parts, ambient noise, etc... And the tempo changes a bit more. Probably because 1) It's a decently long song and 2) It's essentially three songs in one. It's still formulaic, but there is clearly more going on than in The Black Keys' "Thickfreakness." I'm not smart enough to break it down note by note, so I'm sure somebody can easily come in and be contrary. This is just strictly what I am hearing. Anyway, here's the song:

fHiGbolFFGw

I'm not gonna pretend to be something I'm not. I don't know dick about how to read music or anything like that. I'm sure there are a ton of intricacies that I'm naive too. I'm just judging solely by the output and what my ears are focusing on.

I think Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is an awesome album with a lot of what I'm talking about. I also quite like Summerteeth. And I love The Black Keys. So I'm not saying music needs to have a lot going on in order for it to be good. My ears process The National, The Hold Steady, Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers and Wilco as more straight forward bands than Radiohead and Sigur Ros. Much of it is the layering that I poorly described. A lot of it is also the ambience that Radiohead and Sigur Ros create with their music. That's a reason why I also like Massive Attack, Portishead and M83.

I'm no music scholar and I wish I could do a better job of explaining the intangibles that I hear in the bands I listen to. Sorry for pigeon holing you. I was sort of thinking out loud when I sent you that text.

However, for some reason it scheduled me to see all the hip hop acts over the weekend... and I am not a hip hop fan. I don't know where it got that from. It also has me skipping The Mars Volta, which isn't happening. But yeah, I thought it was fun. Who else has used it?

It keeps crashing when trying to use it with Firefox on a mac. I got it to work with Safari and it was nice to see what to expect as far as where I will be walking, but I don't really like that I can effectively print it out. Or I didn't see an option anyway. Also the linking to facebook is slightly irritating but whatever. Speaking of not being able to print, I have made bigger versions, or combined I guess you should say, of the sets times for each day so that you can see all 9 (!) stages at a glance for one day. I will post if anyone is interested.

This was great and I definitely have a more clear understanding now. The Radiohead songs were fine examples and I actually dug them both but Paranoid Android was schizophrenic ha than the first one. The song changes beats and tempo's a couple different times but remains cohesive. I wondered if ambiance was part of it because I can understand that as well. It's like adding dimensions to a song with more music.

Yeah ambience is huge for me. Just adds texture and I'm a sucker for that. I kind of like those schizophrenic songs that keep me guessing. I also love the slow and steady buildup that ends in something grand. Sigur Ros is my favorite example of that. I'm also a sucker for rock music that utilizes strings and synth and has it still work well with the guitars. That's why I liked Cloud Cult so much at Coachella.

Paranoid Android is essentially three songs in one.

I know people who love Airbag and then hate Paranoid Android and I often wonder why, but to each their own. The whole album is flawless, IMO.

I have only one non-boardie friend going. . . I give you premission to make it as awkward as possible for him.

If I recognized you I would

Im going with all non boardies and they dont really know about the mb and all of its geekness. I cant think of anyway to tell them without sounding like the biggest dork in earth

I've been using the modifier "Coachella friends." Because really, all of you are.

Hey man, i think im skipping Beasties for Byrne. We do what we gotta do

Nice choice. The Beasties are going to tour after the festival rounds this summer

Haha Ill admit that was a pancakes heart only because I like trying to make him uncomfortable with my pancakes love.

You already know how I feel about you. This isnt a Bonnaroo Countdown, it's a Salah/Drew ManHug countdown featuring a 3 1/2 hour BOSS TIME set

Making pancakes feeling uncomfortable? One of my greeting ideas was to run behind him and give him a giant hug while all his friends are around, and then without an introduction just say something around the lines of: "Hey man, don't worry about Coachella, my tests came out negative."

And then vanish into the Bonnaroo night

Must've missed it.

Is Tom Morello there this year? I'd say the chances of him playing with Bruce are very high.

I guaranteed this ten pages ago. Tom Morello will play Ghost of Tom Joad with Bruce. Count it.

Actually, as a matter of fact... And as for my family members, I won't really be spending time with them over the weekend, just due to festival habits/taste in music of my sister, I didn't actually see them once over the entire weekend last year, only the beginning and the end.

So... all the more reason to meet-up and hang with you lovely internet people. :D

Yeah. I got over it and now I'm pretty excited. Mostly just for the general experience, although Byrne is getting me pretty pumped.

Yes to all of this. Can't wait for the new experience, it's been since Coachella '07 since I attended a major festival for the first time.

I've seen Bela twice already. I'm seeing Animal Collective at the Wiltern and at ATP, where they'll play for like 3 hours, but outside, on a big stage, that hipster shit just won't translate. I hope Grizzley Bear is good. Why aren't you watching them?

YYY's?

Come on man.

Not a Wilco guy, Tim? Figured you'd love Nels Cline...

I do, but I've seen Wilco so many fucking times. I really have no reason to ever see them again. I'm pretty confident I've see everything they can do. Plus, it's a living fucking legend man, I love bluegrass, much more than this new rock/country that Wilco plays, that's all. Yes, I listen to Sam Bush as often as 3 6 Mafia, idk what's wrong with me.

LOL Haven't you seen them yet?

Um dude, if you like their albums at all ... you'll shit yourself.

I love know you like metal, really consider High on Fire. Have you heard the new album?

You guys and your planning, once I set foot on The Farm god knows where I'll be.

Who's down to get drunk soon as camp gets set up and go see some hip hop later on in the night?

Dude, the first thing we're doing Thursday night is finding some DMT. Seriously.

Nope, I've never seen them. And the only album stuff of DEP I really like is their EP with Mike Patton. I am just planning on checking them out because the live videos I have seen of them are awesome. I guess I shouldn't have put "if DEP suck" its more like "if I get tired of DEP..." Also, I am not as big into Metal as most people assume I am, so I have never heard High On Fire. I have heard good things about them. Actually, I don't listen to very many metal bands at all.

SGW:

Tobacco has been known to cause fits of expressive involuntary muscle spasms, otherwise known as dancing, and should not be experienced by minors, pregnant women and insecure brohammers.

Side effects include enlightenment, smiles, and the above stated involuntary muscle spasms.

If your Tobacco lasts longer than 4 hours, consult your set times as you are probably watching Phish.

The girl I'm going with is realllll into Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and it's all about carving out a space in the front for Byrne. That's one of the only conflicts that hurts me bad, YYY's/Grizzly Bear/Santigold, the Al Green overlap, and the Badu overlap.

Right, it reminds me of the big 07 clusterfuck of Franz/Spoon/Les Claypool maybe?/Ween

Everyone that knows me knows that Ween was obvious but still ... I wasn't happy about missing all of those other bands.

I think I saw them open for Why? last fall. Trippy stuff, pretty good. I was a little scared of them, but I like that feeling.

Also, Tim, I've skipped Wilco at fests due to conflicts at least 2-3 times so I feel like I have to see them this time.

A+ post. Would read again.

Listening to a little bit of the Yeasayer album is getting pretty excited for them. That late night set could end up being a really good thing. And since I don't give a fuck about MGMT, I can give my obligatory trial run for NIN after.

Haaaaaaaa

Duly noted. Thanks, Gonshy :thu

My friend and I still talk about that and how we should've chosen Ween. Franz sucked so much donkey ass
