But everyone in this thread is nice too...

Yeah, when either side starts bickering... I choose not to take sides. And usually, it is because I don't have a side. Take today for example. I saw your points, but I also saw Tom's points. (Hawkingvsreeve was kind of being a dick, but he is usually a nice and funny guy... I guess he just snapped.)

there was only one time i remember you being a dick josh, and i was really shocked/surrprised. haha. i dont remember what it was about though.

The only person I am really a dick to here is Randy. And thats because he deserves it. I find since I stopped being nice to him, he treats me like less of a piece of shit.

I had avoided that Deerhunter album for the longest time because of the EPs, but after finally listening to it this weekend, I'm disappointed to admit I love it. :(

Yep, the same thing happened to me. I hate loving the same album that these elitist pricks love but I can't lie to myself. I'm seeing them tomorrow at the El Rey. They were good opening for NIN at the Forum but that venue doesn't have the best sound. They were still obviously a great live band though.

im 65% there.... we've talked about it. We both wanna do it... I think it depends on the lineup. If its just the Beasties and a bunch of acts ive never heard of, ill still go.... if its ACDC as a headliner...ill be there....if The Prodigy are there, ill be there.... I want to make this happen.

I can completely understand why you're waiting on the lineup. It's a lot of money and a long way to fly. I assume if you could go back in time you would have gone this year, but would you have gone to 06 or 07 if you had the chance again? For me, 07 was the best lineup of any fest I've ever been to, vegoose 07 was probably the second best.
Ragepatton Josh (to use sbess's elongated method of referring to posters) what are your chances of going next year? Are you still leaning towards the darkside? (Fuji Rock)

Oh, i LOVED this years lineup...Metallica headlining one of these major festivals was BIG and VERY suprising... I really would have loved to have gone... But between going to the KROQ weenie roast show... and Sasquatch weekend being 2 weeks before Bonnaroo, its really hard manage all that. I also really wanted to do Rock Im Park aswell, but that was gonna be impossible to save up for. 2007's lineup was good... Tool are great, but I wouldnt fly to Tennesee to see them... and White Stripes played Vancouver 10 days after Bonnaroo... Police kicked off their reunion tour in Vancouver, which i had tix for...so yeah. 2008 i would have if i had more money/time. 2007 no...and 2006...if i could go back in time, possibly.

oh and in 2007 i went to europe the weekend after Bonnaroo for a music fest and other concerts... so it wasnt gonna happen no matter what.

You have to look past the headliners in 07 though, there were so many great bands in the middle and bottom of the lineup.

paulb
11-25-2008, 01:06 AM
ya, 2007 had a good lineup...but if I could have picked 1 festival in 2007 to go to it would have been Pukkelpop, they had the best lineup that year.

Backwater
11-25-2008, 01:09 AM
The thing about 07, like apostle said earlier in the thread, was that everyone just played so well. It seemed like every band (besides the Police who were TERRIBLE) played as well as they ever possibly could have. Even diehard fans like me with Tool and sbess with White Stripes were blown away by the performances that exceeded all of our expectations. I honestly don't know if I'll ever go to another festival that will be better than that.

Rage or Josh will suffice. Unfortunately, there is no way I will be going to Fuji Rock this year. Far to expensive. I don't know about Bonnaroo. It will depend on the line up.

I wanted to go pretty badly in '07 but didn't have the cash. Planned on going last year, but would've only been going for Sigur Ros and had the chance to see them a few days before the Roo in Kansas City.

'08 is my year. We're all going to have a blast. They need to honor each one of our respective wishes with their lineup. In my mind, that'd look something like:

TOOL - Dylanja
Catherine Wheel - Amy
Kings of Leon - Sushy
Phish - Tim
Beastie Boys - Paul
The Cure - Salah
Muse - Tommy
The Prodigy - Josh (rage)
Massive Attack - Josh (me)

I'd go to that...

I wouldn't have gone to a single Bonnaroo before 06. But thats just me. With that being said, 06, 07 and 08 all had stellar line ups. I am sure 09 will be great too. But it depends on how great, how much cash I have and how great of a line up Sasquatch has.

I have no idea who Catherine Wheel is, but Amy has mentioned them many times in those reunion polls. I would guess that would mean they're probably a shoegaze band from the early '90s, but again, no idea.

I've heard the album. It's called Saturdays=Youth and you're right, it's absolutely awesome. I think I might see them on Saturday, I didn't realize the irony with the album title until I typed that. barbaratheninja had a ticket that she needed to get rid off so I was going to buy it, but now she doesn't need it sell it anymore but I think I might go anyway. That's such a good album and I've heard nothing but good things about the live show. It's just one guy that records the albums though, I don't know if there's anyone else on stage with him. I hear the Fonda is a sweet venue and I've never been there so I might go but the thing is, The Melvins (a band that I love) is at the Troubadour Friday and Saturday. The second night of two night stands is almost always the better one, so I might just go to Night 2 of the Melvins. Anyway, you're right though JSam, a fucking phenomenal album!

Have you been to lolla before? Not only is roo cheaper because you don't need to get a hotel, but the fest is much, MUCH better in every way. Unless you have goods friends in Chicago that you can stay with and haven't seen in a while, I highly recommed Bonnaroo over Lolla, without a doubt.

coachella is the only 3 day fest i ever been to besides outsidelands. my cousins live in chicago so i wouldnt have to worry about hotel and the main reason why i would be going to lolla is my cousin got free tickets last year and said he could get me free tickets next year. if thats the case i really have no reason not to go. so i would just need my plane ticket.

I'll see you at Lolla, winkle, it's always a good time.

Regarding M83, I hope you guys get to see them. I wanted to last Friday in Chicago, but couldn't make it. A few friends went and said they were really awesome musically, but don't expect any sort of visuals or anything.

Saturdays = Youth, yeah. I think the only album I like better this year is Third by Portishead. Where have I been with M83?! It's like if Kevin Shields wanted to use synthesizers as the primary ingredient of shoegaze instead of guitar. But then he also wanted to fuse '80s synth-pop with it so people would dance. I'm blown away.

Oh, and I guess live, they have guitar, bass, drums, synths. I'd check it out, Tim.

I don't know Tim, if you're a big Melvins fan, I don't want to sway you against a potentially better show by them in lieu of an unknown. And I shouldn't speak my opinion, as I've never heard a song by The Melvins in my life.

I'm hoping M83 shows at Coachella, at this point, I'd be as excited to see them as many of the rumored headliners. But they need to be after sundown.

I didn't see this set, but I saw the video after it happened. That's hilarious just how much Kanye backlash there was on Sunday. And it's funny coming from Robert Randolph because he's supposed to be nice Christian guy.

Robert Randolph is the man. I've never had a discussion with him, but I've seen him play many times and he always tears it up on the slide guitar. Even though he doesn't rap, he would still eat Kanye in a battle.

Here's a nice long video from 08.

Yeah, we're all planning on camping together but it might be a little tricky. Some of us who are driving from up north are planning on meeting in Louisville, but others are just flying straight to Nashville. Hopefully it all works out so that we have one huge campsite all together. We still have plenty of time to plan.

I saw some of Randolph's set but not the ripping on Kanye part. He's so amazing. Was incredible with WSP that night.

But I'm not really into the Kanye-ripping to be honest. Sometimes its actually pretty funny, but its my belief that he had practically nothing to do with the coming on 4:30 AM business. (Which is a long story in itself). Sure that was the lamest thing ever at a festival, but I don't lose any respect for the man as a musician, of which he happens to be an incredible one. I could honestly care less about his insane backstage personality, I don't believe much that E! or MTV or whoever else reports on to begin with.

Was surprising coming from Robert Randolph though of all people. He usually plays Christian rock fests.

the dust was killer at the roo two years ago ...yuck

Just wondering for the experienced Roo goers, because you're all also Coachella-goers, do you prefer the crazy dust and hot temperatures (in the vain of Coachella) to what we had this past year? Or to rain in general? Because I thought this year was pretty much perfect, I was hoping for rain, but not too much... felt really great Friday, and then, so did the sun on Sunday.

I read on inforoo that a lot of people prefer the hot weather & dust. Which kinda surprised me.

Um, yeah I guess he's played a couple here and there but his main bread and butter are jamband fests. Everyone who knows anything about me knows that I stay as far away from anything Christian related as possible so I'm not saying you're completely wrong because obviously I know nothing about Christian rock fests. However, I've seen him several times at jamband festivals which are filled with drugs and all sorts of hedonism and he never seems to have a problem with any of it. In other words, he's no Bible thumper and nothing in that video surprises me one bit. He didn't even say, "fuck him" he just said, "forget him" and then "Kanye sucks." Not a big deal at all.

I do agree, but to a certain extent heat just gets to be too much for me, particularly at a concert. It can be way too distracting. Just shows how good Coachella is if its simultaneously my favorite festival and the hottest fucking place on Earth haha....

But when it comes to rain/cold, well, for starters you'll practically never get cold at a festival with all the walking around & body heat, even if its OSL... and rain, well, I can understand if there's too much, but I haven't been there yet. For me, the more rain the better. It's such a music-enhancer.

And you're right, if its ever too cold, well... DANCE YOUR ASS OFF!

Backwater

That's how I am, which is why I thought it was hilarious when all those ravers were so worried and got all worked up because there was a SLIGHT chance of rain at hard halloween. If anything I think it makes the show better and more memorable like the rain while Phil and friends were closing it out in 06.

I've been freezing cold at festivals but those were small jamband fests in OH, around this time of year. The big summer fests though, yeah it's kind of impossible to get cold at those.

Chris kept me in stitches, I was giggling the entire time. BB King was the most spiritual show I've ever been too, thats the best way I can describe it. I love and respect that man so much and sure he's old (as fuck!!!) but he was beyond entertaining. The stories he told and the way he told them, with a lot of sass and with so much wisdom. My soul felt so cleansed. As I type this I'm getting those concert goosebumps. He also has the best guitar orgasm faces this side of Prince.

There was a point during my raconteurs show where I though "Holy Fuck! This just may be better than the white stripes last year". After the white stripes I was in such a euphoric state I thought I peed my pants. I mean I was so sure I did, I could feel the warm liquid down my leg. I checked my pants and they were dry as a bone. The Raconteurs actually made me pee my pants a little :p

I'm not excited about the new The Prodigy single, but I would be excited to see them.

After talking to my friend Adrienne (locachica73's sister, oddly enough) I am determined to attend about 6 music festivals next year. I don't know how, but I think it can be done. Tell me if you think I'm crazy:

Coachella - That's a 100% go for me. No worries there.

Bonnaroo - See above.

Sasquatch - I need to see The Gorge. This might be pending the lineup, but Adrienne wants to go so I'd have a cool traveling buddy.

Austin City Limits - A good friend of mine lives about 10 minutes walking distance from the site. I might not even have to take time off of work for this. This is the most likely after RooChella.

Lollapalooza - Adrienne goes to this every year and already has a place to stay. The lodging would be cheap, but the flight might be expensive. Probably lineup pending.

Bumbershoot - I hear it's a blast and usually on Labor Day weekend. So I wouldn't have to take time off of work.

Prodigy is one of my must-see acts for '09 paul. I will have to listen to everything new I possibly can, but yeah, I am more hyped about the live show.

Also, tommy, I have already made the commitment to myself that I am doing a full three festivals next year - coachella, Roo, and whatever third festival has the best line up, be it lolla, sasquatch, atp ny, acl.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone. I've never seen Arcade Fire so I would be willing to check them out because I hear so many good things about their live show, I can't stand the albums but that's how it is with all of the jambands I love so I would definitely see them if there were no serious conflicts. The same goes for Modest Mouse, I just can't get into them. They played in 05 but I saw The Word instead and I don't regret it at all because The Word was one of the best sets of the weekend. I listened to The Lonesome Crowded West twice and a few other albums and I just can't stand the vocals at all. Having said that, I would like to see them jam for 20+ minutes. Anyway, I hate to sound like an elitist prick but Deerhunter >>>>>> Arcade Fire and Modest Mouse.

don't give up on modest mouse yet, it's worth it to keep trying. if you didn't like lonesome crowded west, you might like Good News for People who Love Bad News. same basic principle but more production and more accessible melody. For my money, though, The Moon and Antarctica is one of the ten best albums of the 00's.

also, I am working on Drewaroo.

Tim, Tim, Tim...

A) Glad you got to see Deerhunter and that it was a good show, that album gets better with every listen.
B) The Arcade Fire are up there with Radiohead and Portishead as the greatest live shows I've seen. The most spiritual experience I've had. I know I need to see Deerhunter live, but I'm quite confident that they don't hold a candle to AF.
C) Funeral is one of my favorite albums of the past decade.

Backwater

JSam, the reason I can't get into AF is the same reason I can't get into MM, the vocals. I just hate the way that guy sings, that's all, but that's still enough for me to pop in an Outkast or Pixies cd instead.

I listed to all of Antartica and about half of Good News. If I can't get past the vocals then I'd rather just listen to something else. The way he sings just comes across as completely obnoxious and annoying to me. Like I said, I'd check them out though if there were no conflicts. I really wanted to see them in 05 but it was the fucking Word man!

I can't stress to you guys enough how much Deerhunter kicks ass. They're like a 1991 Nirvana. Bradford reminds me very much of Kurt in the way that he wants people to love his music but at the same time he really doesn't want to become a celebrity and deal with all the bullshit that comes with it. Now that they're getting kind of big, he's very wary of the fame. There are also other quirks about their personalities that remind me of each other.

Check this out. It starts out like a typical indie rock song but just wait and hear what it turns into. Fucking awesome.

I know what you mean. Jambands are all about the live show. It's improvisational music and to play good improvisational music you have to absolutely master your instrument. I think the fact that I'm a musician has a whole lot to do with why I like that kind of music so much. Jazz is like the original, definite form of jamband music.

I think you would definately appreciate Modest Mouse live. They are all really talented musicians, and it especially shows when they are into. Apparently, they are hit or miss live though. I have seen them twice, and both times they were incredible. One time, the first time I saw them, is my #5 best show of all time. In 2005 they played Cowboy Dan and I was absolutely blown away. Words can't describe how amazing it was. (Have you ever been lucky enough to see them play Cowboy Dan?) To this day, I am pretty sure it is the best live song I have ever heard. I cant really remember what else they played though. But at Sasquatch they played Truckers Atlas, Doin' The Cockroach aaaand Trailer Trash. Unexpectedly, Trailer Trash was my favorite song of their set. If they did their 20 minute Truckers Atlas, that might have topped it.

I am convinced I have had the worst luck possible with Modest Mouse setlists. twice I have seen them, and twice Spitting Venom was on the setlist and not played because of time constraints (fav song on the new album.) Best song I have gotten is Doin' the Cockroach, I started freaking out when they got to the part where Isaac screams into his pickups, kids were giving me weird looks haha. but if I were to write a setlist, CD, Dramamine, and 3rd Planet would 100% be there.

also, modest mouse kicks all sorts of ass. When theyre in the mood, they can give you the show of your life. Theyve played three times in Miami, the first time was awful. Isaac was drunk and douchey. The second time was alright but it was at a festival and the act before had so much delay, MM played for like 10 minutes. Then they returned this past June and rocked our Fillmore. I believe they've been to 6 of the 8 Bonnaroos. In 2007 they had to announce that MMJ wasn't playing. That's how much of a given it is. And don't count on 4 hour sets from them all the time. The one next year could ONLY be 3 hours. :) MMJ alone will seriously make my weekend.
