I have got mixed opinions on which work to move to next.

You can't go wrong with any of those other three I mentioned. Year Zero is also good but newer.

Ehh, I agree with what you're saying Backwater, and I was actually half-kidding about the whole "core of the festival" thing, but you're forgetting who's headlining the whole damn thing and will be playing largely unopposed on the mainstage for 7+ hours this year...

Im still debating the Byrne/Beasties thing.

See, my Beasties show at Langerado was beyond perfect. I was literally two people away from the rail and on some of the best mushrooms ive had. At Byrne I was a little far back and stone cold sober

I would get to hang with Jsam and pancakes (:cat:cat:cat:cat) at Byrne

and TIM

they really fucked over the other jam bands. Galactic and Gov't Mule should have better time slots imo

They're all three different styles/directions though aren't they? Is there a particular one you'd reccomend based on general music taste?

I completely agree with this. That langerado set won't be beat, but a stone cold sober Byrne set is not a real set for you. Plus, Bryne will have some cool guests, but then again the Beasties might too.

I hate Head Like A Hole with a fierey passion actually. And I hope I'm not offending anyone in this thread about it. But it's admittedly pretty rare I feel this negative about music as I do that song... but really I cringe when it comes on the radio...

I'm still gonna go with PHM though because a friend at work has recommended it to me multiple times.

Ryan, please listen to Pretty Hate Machine. One of my favorite albums of all time!

Ron, Tim, yea I know how to sneak things I was just thinking that to bring enough to make it worth while it would only take a small amount of looking to find. (We're getting a SUV not a car with a trunk). Maybe I'll just go with homemade hard lemonade.

Flapjacks, please listen to us. We can't, in good conscience, let you miss this Nine Inch Nails set. Yeasayer will be here for a while, buddy. Hell, they were a top 10 band at Roo for me.

Ryan, I've been listening to Calculating Infinity and Miss Machine and I forgot how much I like DEP. I don't like the direction they went with the new one, he shouldn't try to sing, but yes they're great live. I have a conflict with them and Ted Leo so I'm just seeing half of that set.

Nine Inch Nails has some elements of Depeche Mode, but they shouldn't be lumped in together. And Marilyn Manson? That's ridiculous just on talent alone. Flapjacks, I think I can speak for everyone when I say you've had the wrong impression of Nine Inch Nails all these years.

There are still hundreds of bands I obviously do not "gravitate" towards... haha my music collection is not that massive!

It's true. I just group them together with those Northwest bands that really took off when I was in high school though like The Shins, Death Cab, Decemberists, etc., and then you have your Wilcos and MMJs, and then you have your Sufjans and Arcade Fires, and then you have your White Stripes/Strokes/Vines/Kings of Leon/Black Keys/YYYs, and your Franz Ferdinand/Arctic Monkeys/Bloc Party/etc... that's what I think of as my small little generational slice of music, if there was one.

Just for tangent's sake, in all fairness, Modest Mouse didn't exactly sky-rocket into the mainstream consciousness until "Float On" came out, and though that wasn't really a good thing, my generation of peers was certainly introduced to their back-catalogue through that song, for the better.

Well I just hear chia say there's NO WAY I'm seeing any of Phish so many times, that I forget it's all coming from just one person. I'm glad others are going to check them out. Also, rage isn't watching a minute of them, is he? I thought there was a couple others too. It seems like everyone that said they would check them out, said they would only on Sunday. I'm just saying, you might be too tired for that to happen.

One point of contention, Flapjacks. Albuquerque is not in the Northwest part of the country.

HAHA, I was trying to figure out what you meant by this... and then I looked it up. I had no idea they were from Albuqueque. I figured they were from Seattle because they were on Sub Pop. I stand corrected Bonnathread Captain! I'm sorry if I offended your hometown :(

Tim, I don't think I've even said it so many times. I'm just not interested in them. And I think the only complaint I made at all was the almost 2 hour unopposed block on Friday. On Sunday, I'm content to just do nothing.

I did! I'm not a fan but I'd like to maybe see her. Don't know her to well...

I was quoting this and then completely forgot who you were referencing. Shows my short attention span from page 733 to now

Am I allowed to talk about music right now?

Tommy, you should definitely check out Byrne after Beasties. Have you listened to Talking Heads albums or just solo? Check out Remain in Light if you haven't yet. I guess JSam and I are the only people REALLY excited for that set. Oh and Al Green will perform Take Me to the River with him. I also wouldn't be suprised if Brian Eno or Santigold (since they're working on something together right now) show up. It'll be a great show.

This got me thinking about collaborations since roo always has tons of special guests in the sets. Obviously BOSS TIME is going to have tons of guests with a three and a half hour, unopposed, Saturday headlining set. He jams with Elivs Costello quite often so he's a shoe in. Who else do you guys think? Booker T, Ben Harper, Warren Haynes, somebody from Wilco maybe? Trent sometimes has DEP play Wish live with him so that's very likely to happen. Also, he's working with someone from TVOTR on a project right now, maybe we'll get a preview.

I'm sure the 3D rumor for Phish is true. They need something to keep all of you hippie haters entertained, especially when it's a long ass, unopposed set. Also their lightshow is second to none. Hell it's almost 3D already, every bit as good as Tools' and LITS.

If you can't tell from this long post, I'm so excited for bonnaroo right now it's almost ridiculous.

Only people excited for David Byrne? Tim, add me to that list. I've been listening to the Talking Heads since I was ten years old. He's my number two.

Collaborations:

David Byrne w/ Santigold and w/ Al Green
Dilinger Escape Plan with NIN
Phish with Beastie Boys
Phish with Warren Haynes
Bruce Springsteen with Tom Morello on Ghost of Tom Joad (I am guaranteeing this).

Phish in 3D? Wha-wha-whaaaat?

I cannot believe people are going to watch Girl Talk over a 3D Phish show.

Can you give me more information on this? How it started, etc...

Meet my NIN:

ikp9b9AyNHE

Seriously though, you can't expect people to get excited over a set by a band they don't like. I mean, I nearly screamed like a little girl when I saw Throbbing Gristle on the poster, but there's no way I would expect 95% of the people on this board to even be interested in checking them out. It was an amazing set and perhaps a once in a lifetime opportunity, but if you hate them, none of that matters. Five pages of people convincing you otherwise isn't going to change your mind.

Thanks Patrick. I was hoping someone might actually come in and say this. Though I wouldn't say "fuck NIN," I still think they might be worth my time, anything is worth a try once and they sure get lauded around here for this.

I still don't know what it is I don't like about this band but it may very well be a lack of teenage angst within me that I've never really had. Maybe I'm waiting for my 20s to roll around. Maybe I listened to too much Rage when I was in middle school...

Sorry for the BrokenDoll-like post, but I just got back from playing basketball for a bit. Anyway....
Believe me, I totally understand where you guys are coming from with that. It's the constant bitching about something you can't change and, in my opinion, about something that is really hard to do. That's what grinds my gears. :)
I wasn't calling you out for complaining. I was calling you out for making statements without much backing. You're my friend (I think you consider me one too) and I feel like I should tell you when I think you're opinions may be a little unfounded. Like the "Eff Tool" stuff. Sometimes you are so adament about something without anything to really back it up. Nothing personal.
This is exactly what it comes down to. Depnding on your tastes you're either gonna think the set times suck or the set times work out nicely.

I swear I'm not trying to be an asshole. Again, I just want to see all my friend maximize their experiences and just enjoy themselves with the situation that is presented.

Phew, I thought I was the only one who didn't have any desire to see David Byrne. I tried, but it just didn't strike a chord with me.

This is something I completely agree with. I really wanted an Of Montreal late-night set. See, you guys, I'm disappointed in SOMETHING. :)

Yes. I genuinely dislike NIN. I'm sure he's good at what he does, but I simply don't like either his voice or his songwriting style. And having listened to a fair amount of 80s industrial, it just seems watered down and tame and frankly kind of boring to me. Kind of like Coldplay in comparison to Radiohead. Also the lyrics are kind of embarrassing if you're old enough to drink legally. All that said, I'm sure Trent is a nice guy and he obviously has good taste in music, I just don't care for the stuff that he makes. I once thought I liked a song, but it turned out to be an Aphex Twin "remix."

And yeah, I do think they're the type of band that's easier to appreciate if you grew up listening to them. It's great music for when you're 14 and hate everything, but it's hard to get into in your 20s.

I disagree, but only because it is different for me. I own pretty much everything NIN have released because I really love the production on his albums. Year Zero and With Teeth were just ok from a song standpoint, but they really interest me because of the sounds he is able to get from the instruments. I think Trent is one of the best producers around at the moment (for his genre). Unfortunately I don't think he will ever make another Fragile, but some of the new stuff is redeeming.

I was looking at it this way as well. When I was going through that period, it was 2003, and NIN were going through their period of inactivity, so of course I never really came upon them. By the time they made their comeback on the radio, I had well moved on to other styles of music.

Also, his voice tends to annoy the shit out of me too, and I now realize why the second half of "Closer" is thus far the finest three minutes I've heard out of this band... I need more moments like that.

You honestly must not know anything about my taste in music nor about how much I know about muisc and music history. In fact, most of my favorite artists are from the 70's and 80's.

And why are you even bringing "respect" into this. Why did acts play during Paul McCartney at Coachella this year? Or during Prince? Or Roger Waters? Or Rage Against The Machine? Why? I'll tell you why, because not everyone has the same taste in music. Simple as that.

I understand at Bonnaroo acts don't conflict with the headliners (with the exception of the Beastie Boys this year) and Im not really even complaining about this. I am just a little frustrated my #1 and #2 acts for the weekend are directly conflicting, while an act I am indifferent toward is playing for 3.5 hours. Also, I never said Bruce Springsteen is awful. To be honest, I like pretty much all of his music that I have heard. However for some reason, I have no interest in watching him live. This ends up working out for me in the end anyways, because I will have time to sleep and to grab a great spot for NIN.

EDIT:

I just find the Gogol is the best band ever comments to be amusing
