I looked into it a bit more. It appears that he basically organized one of the existing tents with the artists mentioned, and will be playing a set by himself (makes sense). So now that Dirty Projectors are on the lineup, I really want to go (I already really wanted to go beforehand). Friday is too full.

Dammit.

Byrne has selected Santigold, Dirty Projectors, Ani DiFranco, St. Vincent, and Norwegian folk band Katzenjammer, to play before he closes the stage.

It’s not like these folks need me to introduce them to a wider audience, at least I don’t think they do . . . I’m just thrilled they’ll be added to the festival lineup.”

Byrne says added to the lineup.

I guess that really doesn't help much.

Yeah I saw those clips as well. They just haven't been formally announced. They basically let him pick all the artists at one of the stages for Friday, so the stage will probably go Katzenjammer > Dirty Projectors > St. Vincent > Santigold > Ani > Byrne. 2nd main stage is my guess.

I really need to listen to some Santigold, I hear a lot of people say good things about them/him/her. I'll check out some Dirty Projectors as well. I'm ignorant to most of the Byrne stage actually but i'm excited and like that they are doing this.

hawkingvsreeve
04-22-2009, 01:05 PM
Santigold is cool. She's like MIA if MIA wasnt such a fucking trainwreck and had a little more pop sensibility.

Dirty Projectors are....interesting. For fans of Animal Collective, Grizzly Bear, Yeasayer and other experimental rock/folk groups.

Grizzly Bear is opening for Wilco in Tucson, more homework. I have been meaning to give Animal Collective another shot as I haven't since "feels". I really did not like that album.

I can't remember if I told you guys, I actually enjoyed Calexico quite a lot. I'm realizing that more now that I've had a little time to digest. I was not in the right mood on Saturday, so hopefully I will see them at Sasquatch.

I think tonight instead of catching up on work (which has been an absolute FUCKING NIGHTMARE since I got back), I will start checking out Sasquatch + roo bands, and sort through my Coachella pictures. I only took like 40. And I don't think I really took any of people or bands. I suck. I'll do better at roo.

this is what i saw at Coachella:

Friday: Franz Ferdinand, The Crystal Method, The Presets, Girl Talk, Leonard Cohen, The Ting Tings, The Aggrolites, Molotov, The Airborne Toxic Event, We Are Scientists, Paul McCartney

Saturday: Mstrkrft, The Chemical Brothers(dj set), Band of Horses, Thievery Corporation, The Bloody Beetroots, Henry Rollins, Liars, Billy Talent

Sunday: The Cure, My Bloody Valentine, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Perry Farrel, K'naan, Sebastien Tellier, No Age

I had an amazing time....did anyone else see K'naan, that guy blew me the fuck away... I had no clue what to expect, all i knew was he had a song with Kirk Hammett on his new cd, but every song, every rhyme was incredible, lots of passion in his music and really feel good stuff.

Ron, I know.. I used to take hundreds of pictures, easily 500+ during the weekend. I get distracted and never seem to have my camera out. I am sure I will take a ton at Roo though because it will be my first year and everything will be new... :)

Paul, I am so glad you got to see K'naan. I was telling everyone I could find to go see him. He ended up having a pretty decently sized crowd. I heard about him on NPR, I think, maybe a couple of years ago. His story is really interesting and the music is good... but I didn't really truly get him until I saw him last year at OSL. Felt bad for him though as he had a tiny crowd (maybe 150 people?).

I honestly don't know how people can come out of a situation like that and spread their story and still seem so positive and hopeful. He is a really unique voice.

He's touring this summer but skipping SF. You other people should try to catch him.

I think there will be more additions next month, D-Lozeez. And you're right about the last 30 minutes of The Black Keys. They just kept playing more powerfully as the set went on. My top 3 sets of the weekend were My Bloody Valentine, The Black Keys and Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

Heidi, since you said how much you enjoyed Calexico, I feel the need to tell you just how much I was impressed by Cloud Cult. They were fucking awesome. The music was incredibly well-layered with strings and keyboards. And the guitar shreds in just the right parts. That was a perfect way to start my Saturday.

My favorites were Paul McCartney, My Bloody Valentine, and Franz Ferdinand, pretty much as expected, although Morrissey should have been in my top 3. :nono He seemed a bit off his game, but I haven't seen him live in 6 years, so maybe that IS his game now.

Dylan, I feel like I need to clarify that I didn't leave the Black Keys because I wasn't enjoying them. I've seen them a couple of times and really really wanted to see Buraka Som Sistema. I was really happy with BSS's set, so I'm glad I caught them. Black Keys will be around and they're a band I will now go out of my way to see. :)

Mark, were you guys with Jason for MBV? Heidi and I were back further during YYYs (she slept during part of the set! Poor girl, she liked them but was really exhausted), then went to find you guys where we were earlier. We met up with Jason, but I decided to move back a little because it was kind of smoky closer to the stage.

Tommy, I am really glad you enjoyed them. While I really enjoyed their set I was in kind of a weird mood on Sunday... kind of antsy for some reason and found it really difficult to stay in one place during the set. I felt like I wasn't paying enough attention at all. Hopefully I'll have another chance to see them. ;)

Does this mean we can agree on music and be friends now?

chiapet
04-22-2009, 03:53 PM
Amy, I would have never ever gone to see a Morrissey show but caught a decent chunk of his set and actually thought he sounded okay (to uninitiated me). His solo songs he played are ones I can tolerate, and I was happy with the Smiths songs he played though he took some slight liberties with the arrangement that had me going :nono

A general question for those who saw SSP. Were they having an off night at Coachella or is that just how they sound? Everyone has raved to me about how great they are live and they just did NOT sound good to me. It was one of my few disappointments of the weekend.

Jason, I'm sorry, I thought you were meeting up with them or I'd have stayed put (though I know you don't mind watching bands by yourself). We moved back a little further because I didn't think I was going to enjoy the noise so much (I'd just popped a handful of aspirin :rolleyes ) but they ended up sounding a lot LESS loud than I remembered. In retrospect I would have actually liked to be much closer to the stage.

D :( :( :( :(

Rubbing yourself with wipes or lotions just doesn't really compare.

They are different fests. I don't think Coachella is better in and of itself. It just probably seems that way because of the big camping group we had. Just as a pure fest, without the bonus of a great camping group, I still think Bonnaroo is slightly better. But that's just for me. If the entire PAW group was at Bonnaroo then I think Bonnaroo would be better.

That said, I think it's a stupid argument because I love both fests. It doesn't matter which one is better. You know?

I think there are different aspects to compare to each fest. For instance are we comparing only the two festivals and ignoring the type of artists at each or pretending they both have the exact same lineup?

Coachella has always been my favorite based on tons of factors. The camping is organized and easy with food, showers and porta potties in very convenient locations and a great proximity to the entrance. I love the lush green grass and palm trees with a backdrop of mountains to give that oasis feel. I love the art installations and when it comes to talent you can always count on rare festival acts, at least one really strong headliner and loads of interesting indie music and the best electronic lineup in the country (even though i'm not much of an edm fan).

The main difference between Coachella and roo seems like comfort vs discomfort. I'm spoiled by the Coachella magic but i'm guessing Bonnaroo has a die hard vibe as it takes a bit more planning and the music goes 24/7.

Two beasts and two preferences. I'm looking forward to every fucking festival I hit this year. :D

Are you really that comfortable at Coachella? It's still hot as fuck and there is generally little sleep involved. We can have the dry heat vs humidity talk all day. It seems like I'm in the minority and prefer humidity over dry heat.

As far as scenery goes, I guess I prefer how green Tennessee is. I see mountains every single day. Coachella honestly reminds me a lot of the way Albuquerque looks (sans palm trees).

Those of you who have never been to Bonnaroo are seriously underestimating how great it is to be able to walk in and out between the festival to the campground.

Bonnaroo does have a die-hard vibe and that's what I love about it. I don't think music festivals have any room for complaining about the elements. Is it hot? Yes. Is it humid? Yes. Does it get dirty? Yes. Do you get tired? Yes. You're not going to a resort, you're camping at a music festival. Expect those things.

I don't see what's so great about this. Why would I need to? I go there to sleep. When I'm awake, I want to be near the music. They have to have it open 24/7 because the music is 24/7 and everyone has different tastes in music so they are going to sleep at different times. I mean it's nice and all but I don't know how much this is going to benefit me. I'll be in the fest until it's bed time then i'll take the 10-20 minute walk to the campsite and crash. Get up, get ready, hang out and then head in.

As far as the scenery goes, the polo fields are beutiful to me. I live in phoenix so I get palm trees nad mountains here too but add the lush green grass, art installations and the desert nights and I get WIN> I love the coachella nights. Nothing is more perfect weather wise. It gets a bit chilly in the middle of the night and that's nice too. For my taste Coachella is perfect. You're right we can argue dry vs humid all day, it's a preference.

I go into everything with low expectations. It's just the way I am. Pessimist or realist or whatever you want to call it. It helps me enjoy life more because when it comes down to it, I end up having a much better time by mentally preparing for the worst. I'm looking forward to the bands and atomosphere at Roo and dreading some of the accomidations only to not be miserable with it when I get there. I have fucked up logic maybe but that's how it works for me. Most likely i'll get there and have a fucking blast.

Tommy, I'm not underestimating the in/out privileges, I've been to festivals that allow it and it's great. I love being able to come back to camp to hang out, rest, eat, change clothes if I'm hot/cold/uncomfortable. It will make it a lot easier for me to do late night shows. I fully anticipate that I'll come back to camp to rest. I am also a little fussy about foods so I'm really looking forward to being able to bring in coolers full of stuff to eat.

Literally the only things that are worrying me are the no driving in/out for the first 2 days, and that it could be so hot + humid that even going back to camp doesn't really help. But I'll be fine and will try not to even complain much. ;) I think I just need to put more thought into packing to make sure I have the right kind of clothes. For Coachella, I just throw random shit in a bag, because you can drive out at any time and go to a store.

*I* at least am really really excited for Roo.

To be honest I was petrified before Coachella. Now I am just excited.

This is stated perfectly. I definitely utilized it for all the reasons that Heidi mentioned. Faxy, there are real benefits to going in and out of the fest. I'm sure there are good reasons why Coachella doesn't do it, so it's not a criticism of Coachella at all.

It's more of a marathon than Coachella. You really need to take some time during the day to rest up or you won't last for the late-night sets. And the late-night sets can be pretty special.

hawkingvsreeve

I am almost 100% sure Coachella does not do in and outs because it's a huge fucking liability, and the lines are already long enough to get in. Sure, they could have a second area for re-entry, but they would have to check all of the people all over again. Also it makes sense from a business standpoint. By keeping people inside, you drive concession sales. While that may seem shitty to some people, this shit is not easy or cheap to throw together. That amount of revenue is necessary for all of the talent they book. I imagine they start planning next month for 2010.

amyzzz

The grounds at Coachella are not big enough to have everyone camp there either like the grounds at Bonnaroo. If everyone can camp, they can easily have ins and outs.

sbessiso
04-23-2009, 10:44 AM
They are different fests. I don't think Coachella is better in and of itself. It just probably seems that way because of the big camping group we had. Just as a pure fest, without the bonus of a great camping group, I still think Bonnaroo is slightly better. But that's just for me. If the entire PAW group was at Bonnaroo then I think Bonnaroo would be better.

That said, I think it's a stupid argument because I love both fests. It doesn't matter which one is better. You know?

This has always been my mindset. But I just seem to consistently have more fun at Coachella. The lineups are better, the scenery is so much more beautiful, the art work is top of the line, can't even compete with anything else.

Faxy, all you need to know is that you're going to experience an entire day of amazingness, then a headliner. After that, Trent Reznor is going to come on stage in the middle of the night and rape your eardrums. At one point he will look directly at you and say, "Now you know this is what it feels like." That is when you will fully understand what the Roo is all about.

You understand that we are all spoiled, right? Most people never even go to one festival ever, yet here we are comparing and contrasting festivals we're going to THIS YEAR.

Some of you even have to nerve to complain about getting to see music and camp with friends and get away from the real world for a weekend. That pisses me off a great deal, actually. Fuckin enjoy it and if it doesn't suit you then you don't have to go. We analyze shit to death and sometimes it takes the joy out of it.

Comparing Lolla to Coachella to Bonnaroo to Sasquatch. I don't know. Just enjoy it if you're going. Make the best of it and realize you're on vacation and it doesn't always have to be the best time you've ever had in your life. Who cares if (insert artist here) played Coachella 2 years ago so that makes another festival less special? Just fucking savor the experience. If you can't do that then you shouldn't be going.

Hot on the heels of news that David Byrne has been tapped to curate his very own stage, Bonnaroo has made yet another major announcement, this in the form of several more additions to this year’s lineup. Included in this batch are Phoenix, Tobacco, Dear and the Headlights, Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band, Joe Pug, Ben Sollee, Cotton Jones, Those Darlins and The Heavy Pets. I'm not complaining at all. If there is any whining on my part, it's my frustration with myself that I don't better handle the temperatures, weather and allergens. I'm far wimpier about it than you'd believe is possible, but I'd like to think I'm not as whiny about it as I could be for how sick I get.

I know I'm incredibly fucking lucky to get to do all this. Last year was Coachella, Sasquatch, OSL, Bumbershoot, ATP and ACL. This year I am "only" :) doing Coachella, Sasquatch, Roo, OSL, Bumbershoot and Treasure Island. Damn right I'm spoiled. I know it and am so grateful. I spent a lot of years looking at festival lineups and show listings and wishing I could go. Some times I did even if it meant not having food or not paying an electric or phone bill. I don't know how I got so lucky as to be able to have the money and time to do these things, but I do fully appreciate that.

PS, I just met the person I want to be in 20 years -- I was out getting coffee and a woman there, probably 50s, was talking about seeing Paul McCartney and all the other bands she saw at Coachella. And how the show she is really looking forward to this summer is of Montreal. :pulse I hope I always get to do these things too.

Anyway, can we get back to the weather not for whining sake but for me to figure out how I can possibly try to look cute when it's 90 and humid? Do I need to take this to a girls' thread?

Tommy, maybe people make the comparisons because they're trying to figure out what to expect and to prepare themselves. I understand not wanting to over analyze (that's why I got annoyed with all the possible set time discussions) but there's something to be said for a bit of preparedness making a situation so much better. Because we have not been to Coachella we're trying to figure out how it compares to the festivals we have been to and what we need to do or to bring to make it the most enjoyable it can be.

I am also admittedly just talking about it too because I am that excited. I was not letting myself think about Roo very much before Coachella, because I had too much to do to get ready for that fest. Now my months' of suppressed excitement is making me want to burst.

Well the comparisons are inevitable and sometimes worthwhile if you're trying to decide between festivals. I just think if people make choices to go to a festival then they shouldn't be "bummed" if another artist is playing somewhere else and isn't rare or it wasn't the exact setlist they wanted. Why do that to yourself (the collective you)?

i see. yeah, if she would just not sing, it might have been a better set. i couldn't even enjoy the music though with her singing over it.

Did you buy yourself some 5-htp like I said? :D

I did, zizzlelez! I've been taking some for the past three days. Believe me, I woke up on Tuesday feeling pretty depressed. I think I'm cool now, for the most party anyway.

Assuming The Beastie Boys headline Friday unopposed I think it'd be a fun set that all of us could watch together with the exception of Pauly and his lady of course.

Just a thought...

I don't get that depressed felling after acid but there wasn't any acid around at coachella so I just smoked weed here and there. The feeling I get after a trip is like an amazing moment of clarity and I usually feel very much at peace. The trip itself is fun and I usually have a goofy grin and enjoy the hallucinations. I have never done extacy or mushrooms but I have done lsd several dozen times. The last time was Coachella 2008 before that was over a decade ago. I enjoy it quite a bit.

The slight depression I've felt post roll is still worth the amount of fun I had on Saturday. Heidi, you talked to me on Saturday night. Did it not look like I was having the most fun I've ever had in my life? Sorry I kept rubbing your back, by the way. I can't make any drug promises though Roo seems like the place to do more acid and maybe shrooms. There is a distinct possiblity I stick to weed. Whatever little panic attack I had a few weeks ago when Tommy was over scared the fuck out of me and that was just weed. Once i'm there and comfortable though all bets are off and I may indulge.

And, since you all have been waiting, my Top 6 Coachella acts (in tentative order...)

I think it's because pretty much the only thing that I'm afraid to do by myself is drive long, especially rural/isolated, distances by myself. I blame college + cars that would always break down in the middle of nowhere. I used to have to hitchhike a lot.

MBV was soooooo much better than I thought they would be, one of my favorite sets of the weekend. Plus the crowd reactions were awesome, people running away with their hands over their ears. Some dude was tripping and trying to block/fight the holocaust with the top of a recycling bin. When I finally saw his face it was an expression of pure terror. I may be evil but that was the funniest thing I saw all weekend.

I've been through most of the eastern and southern US, and the west coastal states. Almost nothing in the middle. I have a vaguely planned out road trip to go through ID->MT->WY->CO->NM->AZ->UT, hitting national parks and camping. I was assuming I'd end up driving it myself, but was talking to my friend about it on the drive to Coachella and it sounds like she's in. ya chia do it ... one day, me and mine went from LA going hwy 101, hitting every NP,yosemiti sp, redwoods, glacier, etc all the way to canada, then we did the x canada hwy to nova schoca sp then down thru all of those other states, vt, nh, anyway, then down to nashville (the roo :) ... i know ladies are somewhat more at risk, so you either go with it, or watch tv ......then there was the time to fathfully reproduce going route 66 all the way, but as they say, thats another story :)..... cr****

Ron, it is a bit embarrassing to admit, but I have not done that trip (101 - even the California part). It's on my list as well. I grew up in the country and was very uninterested in camping or being in the great outdoors... now after 15 years of city life, I enjoy getting away from the concrete sometimes. :)

I have done the 101/highway 1 down from Santa Cruz to LA one night when I left at midnight, missed the 152 exit and said fuck it. Awesome drive. I would love to take it further up the coast some day, I just feel like I need to see more of this country.

I've done 1/101 from SF to LA with my brother, and we're planning to do SF to Portland or Seattle the next time he's out here. I've done parts of it and really love the Oregon coast in particular.

Salah, I am seriously overjoyed that you liked MBV. I talked to a few other PAW people who were really digging them, too.

So you have obtained Loveless and Isn't Anything now right?

I have trouble enjoying them on my ipod now. It's just not the same. I want the alive aural assault again please.

All my real life friends keep asking, "what are we going to do on Wednesday?"

"Meet up with my internet friends," I tell them.

It's gotten to the point where I'm embarrassed to talk about them with you guys.

And don't worry, we'll be at Wal-Mart w/ zzzizzzles!!

I guess I am out of the loop. But Barbra is a blast, so this is awesome.

Also, I was kind of thinking of going to APW... but now there is a chance I may be going to France for 2 weeks at the end of August. Part of the trip will include a music festival called "Rock En Siene" which has acts like Faith No More, Madness and The Prodigy playing. So I am hoping I can figure that one out. If that falls through, I may wind up at APW.

Nice Josh, very nice. I'm glad you are as festival obsessed as the rest of us. It's fucking wonderful!

Josh, if you have a chance to do that, please do. It will be amazing. As much as I love the festivals, I've enjoyed trips overseas so much more. Paris is one of those cities that was not at the top of my list, I was thinking... I never managed to learn French well, don't like French food, am not that interested in fashion... what is there for me? I only went the first time on a lark because I had friends living there and it only cost me the price of a Eurorail ticket. And I had nothing but the most incredible time. The food was incredible, people are nice, the people watching is amazing, I saw good music, drank so much excellent wine, I could go on and on but I'll just say it's one of my favorite cities.

I think I may sit at home all weekend. I'm so tired! I've never so much enjoyed being at home with my couch and my tivo.

My fiancee LOVES France. And by France, I mean the south of France. She actually HATES Paris. But French is her minor and she has always wanted to show me France. So with Faith No More, Madness and The Prodigy all at the same festival, it gives us a very good reason to go. We're thinking of flying into Cannes and travelling up through France until we hit Paris. I hope I can make it work.
