I would take Garden Ruin off. Not because it is bad, but you sort of have to go to that one at a later time, as it is a bit different. The other 2 and the EP should give you a well rounded idea of what they sound like, past and present.

I couldn't agree more. I started with Garden Ruin and that's why it took me longer than it should've to get into them.

So what does the Rookrew think of set times?

I think the worst conflict for me is McCartney vs. Patton/Rahzel

Also, is The Crystal Method only playing for 35 mins?

Oh Bonnathread, I never post in ye anymore!

The set times are fuckin great! The best yet for Coachella in my three years...

I do hope to see some of you lovely Bonnathreaders this weekend though. You will find me standing at the very front of the Outdoor Theatre all day Saturday from Cloud Cult at 1:30 --> Band of Horses at 9:30, for the record...

mastodon ftw

I'll be rollin with Sin on this one I think. I saw Atmosphere in November and haven't seen Mastodon since June. Mastodon is playing a secret show here in Burque tomorrow night, but that venue is such a pain in the ass that I don't think I'll make it.

I actually have a ton of conflicts. Some I'm ambivalent about, some that are hurting. I will be doing a lot of wandering from stage to stage I think.

pancakes, I'm planning on starting my Saturday at Cloud Cult too I think, and will probably be checking out Switch first on Friday (unless it's super hot then I'm waiting for Dear & the Headlights).

Every day is really. really. full.
I need to check the sasquatch & roo lineups again and see if there are any potential conflicts I can eliminate.

saturday is the best day of scheduling I've ever had, of any fest I've been too. I can see every band I want and the flow is perfect. Sunday is very, very good for me as well.

friday is the SINGLE WORST DAY for scheduling conflicts in my entire festival career. we will need to talk through this when I come down.

tommy, thanks for the heads up. straight from slumber to set times. and flapjacks, figure out the time and place and I will be in attendance...haha

chiapet
04-14-2009, 02:39 PM

I have talked about Cloud Cult several times and tried to get you guys to check them out.

Go here:

BTW, I did check Calexico out on my commute today... they are OK, I started with Carried to Dust, and I think I've liked the other stuff I heard better (this MAY have been the album I listened to at first when I decided I didn't like them very much). Because of conflicts, they're a no-go at Coachella for me, but I will definitely check them out more after. :)

chiapet
04-14-2009, 02:41 PM
apostle, I am with you. When I saw the set times, my jaw actually dropped open at Friday night. It took me a few minutes to recover and keep looking. I reassured myself, this isn't so bad, until I got to Sunday night too. Then when I re-read I realized I have conflicts all over the place every day.

So I'm just going to see a lot of 1/2 sets I think. The only ones that are really going to make me crazy are the APTBS / McCartney / Morrissey / SSP clusterfuck on Friday, and Sunday night when I have NO clue what I will be doing.... Kills? Cure? The Orb? Throbbing gristle?

I'd said the only band I'd skip the cure for is the Orb. :/

Amy, I can see APTBS a few days after coachella, but I already have tickets to Throbbing Gristle that night (and am considering skipping them at Coachella). The APTBS show is no advance tickets, no door times announced, and it could be a huge fucking mess. I'm afraid to skip them since that might not work out.

my problem with friday is that from 6:30 on, everything is one giant clusterfuck. my top TWELVE for the day were: Morrissey, Beirut, Macca, Ghostland, The Hold Steady, Los Campesinos, Franz, the Presets, Girl Talk, Crystal Method, Crystal Castles, Leonard Cohen.

so basically, Hold Steady vs. Campesinos, Morrissey vs. Beirut vs. Ghostland/Girl Talk, Franz vs. Crystal Castles, Macca vs. Everyone haha. FUCK.

More important than Patton is APTBS. They can fucking throw down. I wasn't "in the know" with this band at all until I checked out some you tubes and heard some suggestions but i'm confident they will be around plenty as well.

Nice! Except... that is on Friday.... which will already be full of conflicts.

I have only heard two songs of theirs, the ones they performed on SNL, and I was really impressed. Hopefully they are on really early so I can check them out. Or, perhaps late night set with Animal Collective?

I have a feeling APTBS are going to be huge in the future. They will probably end up being one of those bands that don't get big until they break up... but they will be huge. I have seen them twice and tear it up so hard live. That is why I will skipping out on half of Patton & Rahzel to see these guys. I won't skip Mike Patton just for anybody.

Josh, I am probably going to do the same thing re: APTBS & Paul. I really feel like I have to watch part of APTBS's set. And realistically, even if Paul is great, I'm probably gonna get bored watching him for a couple of hours. I have a short attention span. ;)

UGHHH I am soooo torn on this one... I promised myself I wouldn't miss a second of McCartney. And I was basically planning on skipping APTBS as a result. But then the set times came out. And I initially thought I would just be able to see their first 15 minutes, and then split.

But I just now they're going to be fucking my brain into eternity and I won't be able to leave... and I know they'll play "Oceans" last too... I just hope Pauly doesn't pull out anything special in his first half hour.

This kinda reminds me of Animal Collective vs. Portishead last year. I ended up missing Portishead's first two songs for AC, and they were pretty much my two favorite songs. But then... it was AC. Melting my face with Brothersport. I honestly don't know if I made the right decision or not on that one. (End rant).

David Byrne First Artist to Curate Stage!

4/20/2009 3:58:33 PM

Byrne also to perform "Songs of David Byrne and Brian Eno"

David Byrne has assembled a number of performers for the first artist-curated stage in the eight-year history of the Bonnaroo Music and Art Festival. On the evening of Friday, June 12 Byrne, who is performing the “Songs of David Byrne and Brian Eno,” will host his recent collaborators Santigold and the Dirty Projectors, singer/songwriter and founder of Righteous Babe Records Ani DiFranco, former Polyphonic Spree member and Beggar’s Banquet recording artist St. Vincent and up-and-coming multi-instrumental all-female Norwegian alt/folk band Katzenjammer.

“We’ve been interested in inviting artists to play a curatorial role in Bonnaroo for some time now,” according to Bonnaroo co-founder and producer Ashley Capps. “David was the logical choice for us and we were thrilled that he agreed. His love for music of all kinds and his passion for sharing that music make him the ultimate musical guide.”

Byrne adds “this was an easy one. I basically reeled off a list of what I was listening too recently or who I had seen live recently and Ashley and Co did the rest. It’s not like these folks need me to introduce them to a wider audience, at least I don’t think they do…I’m just thrilled they’ll be added to the festival lineup”

In addition to his Bonnaroo appearance, Byrne will be performing at theaters and festivals across the U.S. and Europe throughout the summer of 2009 on his year-long “Songs of David Byrne and Brian Eno” tour in support of his and Eno’s critically lauded new record, Everything That Happens Will Happen Today. The setlist includes songs from his numerous collaborations with Eno including tracks from several Talking Heads albums produced by Eno, the pair’s 1981 collaboration My Life in the Bush of Ghosts and their newest collaborative effort Everything That Happens…, Byrne has already played to sold-out concert halls across the world including two nights at New York City’s Radio City Music Hall. His show has been lauded by reviewers as “gorgeous, melodic and spiritually uplifting” (Chicago Sun-Times) and features “the most open-hearted singing of [Byrne’s] career” (Washington Post).

Known as the force behind Talking Heads and later as creator of the highly-regarded record-label Luaka Bop, David Byrne also works as a photographer, film director, author, and solo artist; he has published and exhibited visual art for more than a decade. Recent works include the release of Grown Backwards, Byrne’s debut for Nonesuch Records, EEEI—Envisioning Emotional Epistemological Information (Steidl Publishing & Pace/McGill Gallery), the Lead Us Not into Temptation CD from the film Young Adam, the Talking Heads box set, the Independent Publisher Book Award Gold Medal-winning Arboretum (published by McSweeney’s), the Live From Austin, TX CD/DVD, the Knee Plays CD from Robert Wilson’s 1984 stage piece the CIVIL warS, Playing the Building, an audience-interactive installation at the Battery Maritime Building in New York City, Big Love: Hymnal, music from the second season of the HBO series, and a series of unique bike racks designed by Byrne and installed throughout New York City in collaboration with PaceWildenstein Gallery and the NYC Department of Transportation.

Hey BonnaThread! I really enjoyed meeting/seeing all of you this weekend. Sorry Paul, Josh and other about not meeting up at Band of Horses. You already know my excuse, which is valid, so yeah. Lol.

Chia and Ragey, great to finally meet both of you. I can't believe I met Flapjacks!! I wish I could've talked to you more, but were both grooving in the Sahara. We did share a nice man hug, though. Hah. Same with JSam. It was awesome talking to you, buddy.

SalahBear simply rocks my world. It was a blast camping with him. Pretty sure we hit it off.

anyone interested?
I am flying into Chattanooga 6/11 (Thursday) around 11am and renting a mid sized car. Returning the car and flying out 6/15 (Monday) in the evening. Looking to see if anyone would like to split the cost of the car rental and stock up on food/water/whatever not taken on plane before heading to Bonnaroo. The rental is $190. Depending on how many people would like to split the cost (thinking 2-3 extra passengers beside myself) it would be the equivalent of the shuttle cost from nashville with more options. Once again, being able to stop and get supplies before entering Roo and having a place to lock up any valuables

Mister, you're going to Tennessee in June.

How many of you living out west haven't ventured east (outside of say, NYC)?

chiapet
04-22-2009, 06:44 AM
I grew up more easternly (southern Ohio), and have spent time all across the east and south. I am rightly intimidated by the idea of 5 days of exposure to the elements in Tennessee in June. I get heat exhaustion fairly easily, and the thing about not being able to leave the venue via car until Friday night is freaking me out a tiny bit (with Coachella, I am OK because there is always the idea that I could leave the campgrounds and come back if I'm just too warm).

We're just going to need to figure out how to rig some type of shade and have a massive amount of water on hand (for drinking, soaking, spraying, etc). Jason and I were talking about this as we were leaving Coachella in 100+ heat. :D I'm guessing Bonnaroo will not be as windy, so we might be able to get away with flimsier / more portable canopies.

I'm getting in a little earlier than the rest of you, I think, so if we have some ideas, I could probably make a run to Target/Walmart/hardware store/whatever.

I lived in Chicago for 25 years and have been all over the east. I'm fucking scared. I hate the humid heat.

I think we'll be OK. Christ, I used to play sports in that type of weather, so sitting on my ass shouldn't be that hard, right?

Do they have a lot of water fountains in the venue? I think I read that somewhere. Being able to fill spray bottles or soak shirts would make it a lot more tolerable I think.

I am already having a dilemma about what kind of weekend it will be for me because there are certain things I'd like to try that would be absolutely perfect I think for the roo, but I'm worried I can't even handle the heat let alone anything more.

TommyboyUNM

Bonnaroo has misting tents and a fountain that shoots out water that you can actually utilize. A big big thing to consider is you can always go back to the campground and run the AC in your car if you need it. There are ins and outs at Bonnaroo. And there is shade everywhere in the form of tents and trees.

I know it sounds crazy, and I've said this before, but I have a worse time dealing with the heat/weather at Coachella more so than at Bonnaroo.

chiapet
04-22-2009, 07:48 AM
Mark, I'm sure I'm going to be a big pussy about it, but we'll get through it. That is one of the reasons I'm making my first year one where the lineup is not overwhelmingly great for me -- I think I'd push myself too hard. Does that make sense?

I think we just need to be more on top of things than we are for Coachella. I'm planning on picking up a ton of water, gatorade, maybe some juice, several styrofoam coolers, and some food (mostly vegetables and fruit). I was also going to pick up some buckets and spray bottles so we can wet tshirts and towels to stay cool at camp in the morning. And I'm freaked out enough that I'll probably get some emergency supplies like instant ice and such in case anyone ends up in really bad shape. :P

chiapet
04-22-2009, 07:55 AM
Really Tommy? I hope you're right. I think humid weather is a lot worse, and Coachella is the limit of my tolerance, but it's more because of the no in/outs. I get heat exhaustion every year.

Have I mentioned that I have to go to fucking central Alabama in August this year? I've decided that after 10 years of goth-white skin I'm going to have to give in and get a fucking tan or I'll just burn on all these vacations. :P

I need to to whine in order to get there and then be like "oh, this wasn't so bad". I'm kinda fucked in the head some times. I always prepare for the worst so I can be pleasently surprised with things.

Okay, without going into it too much, I have allergy + respiratory . problems for which I have to heavily dose myself with prescriptions in order to be able to breathe around Nature. This is why I'm strictly a city girl. I was the most sickly child you could imagine when I lived in the country. :) Anyway, those medications also affect the way you regulate body temperature. When I start to get heat exhaustion, I don't feel so warm anymore (sometimes I'm actually a little cold, especially if there is a breeze). So I've just learned that if I'm not miserably hot, that means I'm in bad shape. This is why you'll find me shivering in the Do Lab at Coachella. :)

Anyway I'll be fine. I might need to not hover by you guys who are smokers. And mostly it's that I know I'll get my ass kicked by the heat and will end up not doing as much as I want and will get frustrated over it. And as I said, there are some things I really wanted to try at roo and I don't think I can and I'm just being whiney too. :)

There are showers there like there are at Coachella. The lines can get long like they can at Coachella. You know what's kind of cool. Garnier Fructis has a hair-washing tent inside the festival. Not sure about those lines, but it's an option if it's really killing you.

Most of us are flying into Nashville around 9:00 on Wednesday night and carpooling down to the Wal-Mart in Manchester. Then on Thursday morning (very early) we're driving to get in line to go into the fest. I think that's when we're getting into the fest anyway. And we're all camping together too.

$45 a day is shitty for 4th of July weekend? I think that's a really good price. If you're in downtown Denver, Red Rocks is west and the airport is northeast. You're gonna be doing the same amount of driving so I guess it's just a matter of where you want to hang out that weekend. I would stay in downtown Denver.

It just happens to be someone I haven't seen in a while willing to hook me up so I'm going to take them up on the offer.

peace and love amigo

no that sounds perfect for you i just didnt want you to put out a bunch of money if you didnt have to ..... so next time eh ..... and skip the blowfish because they blow even at the rocks lol ... cr****

Yeah, I don't want to see that crappy band. If anything falls through and I find out soon enough Ron, I'll be back on board though lol. I really think it's awesome you open your place up to folks and offer the hospitality. I love the mentality. Not sure if you have ever seen the site couchsurfing.com but it's pretty great too for like minded budge travellers to even foreign countries. You open up your door to folks and they do the same and such. Pretty great concept :)

so, thanks again Ron, I look forward to meeting you some day and I will let you know if this falls through as well. :D

Mark, I like them, but I have a high tolerance for music that isn't great in a technical sense but which makes me dance and is enjoyable. On the downside, I was really tired and a bit too warm for me to want to dance much. I missed Mates of State who was supporting for the show.

Gotcha. They were fun at Chella last year. Not musically the greatest just fun to watch and dance to.

They were better than at Coachella last year (IMO). But still not extremely good musically. Fun though! :)

I ended up not even bothering trying to see Buraka Som Sistema (I always want to abbreviate them BSS, damn that other band with those initials). And I'm thinking I need some serious sleep tonight if I'm going to do TG (and possibly APTBS) tomorrow.

chia, one thing you might consider that really helped tygerlady .... we bought one of those cheap ass fans at target that runs on batteries, just bring an extra set .... it makes all the difference in the night .... be sure to have or hook up with someone that has the blue shade tarps, they are essential at the roo to survive if you hang at your camp site much .... you might also be 10 mins away from the gate or you might be an hour away (prob not), so sometimes you just dont drop into camp for a pack of gum or something .... we always get accessible, so that is never an issue with us .. and who knows, there is always that small chance i will be there and you guys can store a few things, drinks etc, at my site for easy access ..... cr****

Yes, we've been talking about how to rig shade. I think a cheap canopy + extra tarps + a ton of rope and stakes will do the trick. Was even thinking we could probably tie down to our vehicles in some way. I'm betting Roo isn't as windy as Coachella. :)

Otherwise I'm pretty good about planning for the day, as I grew up in the country and have only had a vehicle for a handful of years in my whole life... I am very comfortable with making due with what I had.

And I think I'm actually healthier now than I realize, for Coachella this year I accidentally packed the wrong meds and ran out of one that I need to take in order to be OK (every time I've failed to take it in the past, I've ended up in the hospital), and I was fine. A little anxious about it, but totally fine. It made me feel better about roo.

In fact, leaving Coachella I was feeling TOTALLY ready for Roo. Now that I'm peeling I'm glad Roo is at least a few weeks away :)

I like Bonnarella better for some reason. (Sounds like Barbarella? Positive associations).

Sasquatch is easy camping, just make sure you have ground cover, rain fly, and stake everything down well. Bring ponchos. I'll try to bring extra. (Mark saved my butt with his extra ponchos last year when my jacket turned out to be not-quite-rain-proof). Some of the most restful camping sleep I've ever gotten was at Sasquatch last year. I'd never camped in real rain, only drizzling. Once I was sure my tent wouldn't blow away, I slept so well in that storm.

And yes. Roo is so close. I will be seeing you guys in 7 weeks :) (Those of you I won't be seeing in 4.5 weeks at Sasquatch).

Jason, I honestly hope I do love it and want to do it every year. The only downside I see to that is that all of my vacation time keeps going to festivals. :P

Right back at you. At coachella I'm used to being with someone all the time who can't be with me all the time anymore, so I appreciate you hanging with me. It was fun. Thank YOU.
