I met some random other board members and spent a long time hanging out with Neutral Milk Hotel and Amneeziac (yes, the dude who makes all the fake posters, who I used to hate with a fierey passion). I didn't even realize who they were until later though. That was the weird part.

But yeah this group is probably significantly older. Bmack's older, though, I think he's in his late 20s or something.

Really? I think he's like 20-21, like the rest of all those guys. For the record, when I found their age out, I started taking their elitism far less seriously.

they drink their lunch from warm condoms. why would you ever take them seriously?

JSam67

I just didn't care for their ganging up on sbessiso all the time, it bothered me. But maybe those protein-based lunches just riled them up.

Well I can't speak for what you're talking about, because I've only been here so long, but from my experience bmack is probably the most consistently nice and courteous person on this board who also happens to be really great and helpful about music, and has pretty similar taste to my own... as for the other "elitists", well I dunno, I'm probably one of them too hahaha...

I can't knock their taste so much, I mean hell, I can be a bit of a snob about the music I like, many of us can. They got me into Deerhunter, M83, the new Grizzly Bear, etc. bmack has typically been courteous to me, too, this isn't an attack on him, he seems like a nice guy.

When I talk about their elitism, I mean how that lot perceives themselves on this msg board, and how seriously they take it. I don't confuse you with that, pancakes.

Bryan (bmack) is all kinds of awesome, although he is still a young lad and is somewhere around 23 or 24. He only looks older due to his amazing talent of growing spectacular facial hair.

And people think the Roo thread is a Band of Brothers...

Anyway, I think M83 is going to get added to Roo. Gotta be a good sign that they're in SF on May 27th, right? That's not terribly long before June 11-14.

And pancakes, in reference to discussion in the Upcoming Shows thread, what don't you like about Saturdays = Youth? That was my second favorite album of last year...

Maybe it is too big a chunk of time, I guess. It would put me over the top for Roo, though. I seriously contemplated Sasquatch primarily on the strength of my desire to see M83.

I still find myself listening to it damn near every day. Have you seen them live yet? My friends have given me mixed reviews, but it seems that the ones who are very familiar with their music really enjoy the show while the unfamiliar ones are kinda meh.

I did see them and it was really really great. I heard everything I wanted (basically all of the highlights from Sat/Youth and BTDHU) and they closed with A Guitar and a Heart which was rad. The music was performed really well, and the crowd was pretty good. Just an overall great experience, excluding the mediocre opening bands.

I did meet some Coachella boardies last weekend for the first time though. It was actually kinda fun. You people really aren't so bad in real life.

Dude, message board meet is SO fun. I hope you'll come by our campsite at some point during Coachella weekend

JSam67

The PAW camping group last year almost singlehandedly made my Coachella '08 1000x better than '07. It makes a huge difference coming back after the shows to a big group of great people that quickly become good friends, and you get to rehash the day's events and keep partying.

Beats the pants off returning with one or two friends to a tent surrounded by strangers and just passing out.

My first festival of the season is manana guys!!

http://www.harvestofhopefest.com/

This is the first year, it's all non-profit for charity. Theres a very good chance it could be a clusterfuck of failure BUT there's also a very good chance it could be a smashing success. I'm excited and I have a relatively solid group of people going

I have a feeling this is going to be a slightly different conglomerate of people than bmack and the AC crew. It's just that this crew is a little bit older for the most part and less hipster.

What does everybody look like, for that matter? I have a general idea due to facebook for some of you, but not those like pancakes, chiapet, gonshman, etc.

There is one picture of me floating around the boards.

Salah, have fun. That looks like a good deal for that show.

Cherita Chen
03-05-2009, 04:57 AM
:)

I have that day before a festival feeling. Meaning I have to do laundry, pack, get everything else together etc. I'm gunna take lots of pictures now that I have a camera.

On a totally different note, does anyone here watch "Burn Notice" on USA? That show about a spy in Miami Beach. I've never really seen it until now but it is crazy the differences you can tell between this and oh say, "CSI:Miami". One is shot on location and the other isn't. I bring this up because I can recognize 90-99% of every single location in Burn Notice. It's kinda cool actually to see your city like that, a lot of these places I walk by almost everyday.

p.s.-I think i've seen Gonshy's pic

I'm going to watch but Broken Social Scene, Devotchka, and the faint all canceled when Langerado kicked the bucket.

Fucked up right? HOH is for a good cause but since they're probably not getting paid or taking a massive pay cut they decide to just skip FL. It's a very selfish thing to do on their part and just makes them look very bad

Such a pretty song! Believe it or not I've listened to them before and I really liked what I heard. It's not all killers for me

Those 3 bands and Deerhunter were the reasons I would've wanted to go. Disappointing. (Was Deerhunter a late add?)

Just looked at the current lineup. Hope the recreational activity is better.

Cherita Chen
03-05-2009, 05:49 AM
I actually have no idea. Their name just seemed to appear.

Wait, yeah they were a late add.

The lineup isn't that bad, I'm REALLY looking forward to discovering new bands. And maybe be converted to some bands I may have originally written off (lots of those there). Hey, I've never seen Girl Talk before either.

Also, drugs man. Drugsss

Ooh, you edited this post & I missed this after the new page. Yeah, I was in another dimension all day then flipped it for SSPU. Knew nothing about DeVotchKa until they took the stage after SSPU, and yeah, ended up being one of the more beautiful shows I have seen.

Bands have bills to pay, and I am sure some of the money from the original festival was going to fund some of the rest of their tours, so when that money was not there they had to change things on the fly to make up for it. It's not a simple cut and dry issue, and it doesn't make them look bad. It's business.

hawkingvsreeve
03-05-2009, 12:55 PM
How much more expensive are the IMAX tickets than a regular theater where you are?

Blinken
03-05-2009, 12:57 PM
It was $15 for me, but I assume you are asking the Canadian.

hawkingvsreeve
03-05-2009, 01:07 PM
No, either. I was just curious. Roughly 5 dollars more I feel is a bit much for only a larger picture. Was the film shot entirely in IMAX or was it just rescanned and printed to IMAX size?

Blinken
03-05-2009, 01:13 PM
Scanned and printed, the only movie so far(Other than IMAX Documentaries) that filemd in IMAX is the Dark Knight, and even then it was only for select scenes. It is very hard to use IMAX for feature presentations becaue of the limitations of the cameras. I still find the sound systems and the picture quality to be superior in IMAX theaters, even though it is only scanned. The Dark Knight in IMAX was on a whole new level though, it was truely amazing worth every penny of extra money for that one.

hawkingvsreeve
03-05-2009, 01:18 PM
Yeah, I am just still not entirely convinced. You may have a pretty good theater there though which is cool. The jump between the resolution changes in Dark Knight was sort of distracting, or it was for me anyway, although the big chase scene is pretty great.

I have been checking Inforoo every morning and afternoon, and still no clue about additions. They would be announced on a wednesday, so we will see next week, although the lack of clues might mean more time to wait. The guy who makes the clues said more clues are coming, but that was 3 weeks ago now.

I have a feeling that they are going to try and do one big announcement, like Coachella is. Because last year Coachella was very sporadic about additions and it seems they are collecting them this year for one big announcement to grab as much attention as possible.

I haven't any solid Dre or Outkast rumors on inforoo. But who knows alot of people think that Beastie Boys are not the third headliner, and that another is coming.

JSam, I think most people on this thread have *not* met... it seems like there are several little groups of us who have met and there is one person overlap between each group. So we are all interconnected in a way.

I've only met salah, sin and fax. I suspect I'll meet quite a few of you at Coachella this year though. The board people I've met so far have been pretty decent -- met quite a few people at Coachella randomly and then a smaller group at ATP last year.

When you talk about elitism, I think I get what you mean, I don't think most of them have "elitist" attitudes but tend to talk confidently and excitedly about music. That can come across as being elitist online, I think, when you don't know the person and don't know that it's not his or her intention. A lot of the people on this board are pretty young and are still in school... and are either studying a related field or just have an enormous amount of free time to dedicate to music.

I am POSITIVE that I sounded elitist when I talked about music when I was their ages, so I try to take it in stride.

And.... Salah? you thought sin was a girl?
Obviously you missed the whole 'ctgal' situation.
That was, I think, my favorite meetup of last year. There was this person who was camping with us, with a username ctgal or something like that. We were all very confused when ctgal turned out to be male.

I had dinner with my mom and my nieces. I love spending time with my nieces (and my mom, of course). I'm a very proud uncle and they are basically the loves of my life at this point. :)

Now I'm home watching college basketball. And I just applied for a job as an Enrollment Counselor at the University of Phoenix in Phoenix. There are many campuses across the country so I felt the need to specify, even though it looks redundant on the surface. But yeah, I'm hoping I can get something going!

Yeah, that's the thing, he's one of my favorite songwriters in the world but I know that he would be otherwise completely boring live like all other singer-songwriters are.

But I really love SKM just as much as I love RHP, so I just love these songs. And I just have a great desire to stand up close and watch him play them in person ten feet away from me. It just seems like it would be a really special experience. He doesn't even have to do anything but play/sing and I would be completely satisfied.

I think I finally get the whole interest in seeing singer/songwriters play live thing, really.

See, RHP is some of my favorite music, ever. Mostly for nostalgic reasons. I know SKM should be essentially the same since the music really has only ever been about Kozelek. But I just don't like it as much. It's probably just me.

I'm frequently interested in seeing songwriters perform.

I guess this is where I admit that I walked out of SKM the last time I saw him. I was a little bit drunk and was just SO BORED that I couldn't take it. I was with some friends, the set was so boring that they started talking, and I just walked out without saying anything to them.

Why do people have to try to sing Stevie Wonder or Michael Jackson? Just don't go there people. You're going to sound like shit.

pancakespancakes

Yeah, that might be lame. I only really really love his new album though. So if I'd seen him before then... it would be pretty blah. (Assuming he doesn't perform any RHP songs anymore).

I'm also assuming he mostly plays these new songs nowadays. The ones I love so much. They sound like they would be awesome live, especially all these guitar jams.

HEY NOW, mine was Bonnaroo-related! You should have thrown the Reverend Al Green in there. (Because nobody should sing like him either).

He's literally the reason I was going to Sasquatch (which I'm not at this point in time).

I have been listening to him all week and all I can think about when I listen to him now is my great desire to finally hear all these songs played live and in person now.

He was supposed to play Bonnaroo. :rolleyes Why can't they just add him...

Ohhh you went to ATP last year, you were around them. I'm sure they're fine folks.

That last sentence hit the nail on the head. I used to listen to a lot more music when I was still in college. Now I can barely keep up with new albums of my favorite artists. C'est la vie.

That last sentence hit the nail on the head. I used to listen to a lot more music when I was still in college. Now I can barely keep up with new albums of my favorite artists. C'est la vie.

Yup! I met a few of them there (though I am not sure I ever caught everyone's board names). ATP was all kinds of awesome. In addition to meeting maybe a dozen coachella board people, I kept randomly running into people I know... people from SF that I didn't know were going, friends from college. And this was, you know, when we weren't running into, say, Kevin Shields. It was pretty nuts.

And YES I think my fond memories of college are mostly based on having had almost infinite time to spend listening to and exploring music, whether online, perusing friends' collections, browsing record stores for several hours a day. This was also around the time that MP3 started to become widely used (okay, widely used amongst computer dorks), so a handful of bands were even starting to post their music on their brand new web sites to entice people to listen. Back then we still traded tapes, since CDRs were still so expensive. I had a stereo, but also had one of those bookshelf dual cassette + CD changer kits, specifically for mix taping. I used to spend hours and hours going through both my own music and other tapes I'd received, making mixes for people... you could tell how much I liked you by how good the mix was and how much time I'd spent on it. :)

Not to mention having endless time to watch movies, play games, hang around coffee shops all night, go out dancing. I used to spend at least 4 or 5 hours EVERY NIGHT on the phone talking to friends.

Now I rarely have time to listen to anything, never talk to my friends or see them... yay adult life. :P

FLAC = higher quality files.

the mp3s are 256 kbps...wav files are 1141 kbps.
you can play FLAC in winamp...and even windows media player with a codec that is avail for download. but your ipod/itunes will require it be changed from flac to apple lossless or from flac to wav.

for people that can't hear the difference, mp3s are fine. for people who CAN tell a difference, such as I can, the FLAC files are the way to go.

If you convert FLAC files to WAV then to mp3, doesn't it take away the originial quality of the FLAC file? I convert FLAC to WAV using Winamp, but is there a way to play the original FLAC file on an iPod?

One of my friends from college is on a business trip to San Diego all week, so me and another friend decided to visit this weekend. Have no clue what we will do in San Diego yet.

FLAC = higher quality files.

the mp3s are 256 kbps...wav files are 1141 kbps.
you can play FLAC in winamp...and even windows media player with a codec that is avail for download. but your ipod/itunes will require it be changed from flac to apple lossless or from flac to wav.

for people that can't hear the difference, mp3s are fine. for people who CAN tell a difference, such as I can, the FLAC files are the way to go.

I can don't think I can tell the difference on my computer, because I only use iTunes to play

I have flak on my ipod. You just have to convert the files. Hi Ron, sorry to hear about your difficult week. Hope things are getting better.

To the rest of the roo crew. The clock is ticking slowly.

How? It won't play for me unless I convert it using Xact.

If you convert FLAC files to WAV then to mp3, doesn't it take away the originial quality of the FLAC file? I convert FLAC to WAV using Winamp, but is there a way to play the original FLAC file on an iPod?

Exactly!

Fax, you just argued with yourself. You were bragging on how you had FLAC on your iPod, but had to convert the files. So that means nothing if they aren't FLAC quality. We know how to convert them to WAVs already. :nono

So basically, the only way to listen to original FLAc files is through winamp, and they can't keep the same quality if you want to play them in iTunes. And I only use my built-in Mac speakers anyway, so they probably aren't good enough to drastically alter sound quality.

Dylan did you lose my boots? You are extra grumpy. The "I haven't been laid in a while" kind of grumpy. I guess I could've said "Sushy" kind of grumpy. I'm worried about you, D.

to clear up the FLAC business...

it doesn't matter what player you use. most players, if they don't support flac by default, will have a codec that you can download. the exception may be itunes, considering that they love their proprietery stuff...so you may have to convert to apple lossless. flac is also a lossless codec, so they are basically one in the same thing.

yes you will still lose quality if you convert a good flac or apple lossless file to mp3. but if you convert to wav from flac, you lose nothing. and of course, mp3s have different levels of quality from the normal 128kbps to 320kbps. yes there are speeds lower than 128, but trust me...you will be able to tell the difference if you go below 128.

mp3 format basically gives the file a "haircut". it cuts off a bunch of high and low frequencies that a lot of people can't tell are missing and leaves the middle part. the lower the kbps is, the more frequencies it cuts off.

like i said, a lot of people can't hear the difference because their ears are not trained to hear it, but if you are an audiophile, you can definitely hear the difference between mp3 and wav.

phew...that should do it. :D

p.s. i'm an audiophile...if you couldn't tell....

there are tons of audio codecs out there...everyone has their favorite. though flac is generally accepted to be the best. the top three are flac, shn, and ape...in that order.

not sure what format nin was releasing in...

I'm listening to Widespread Panic at Bonnaroo 08 right now... which I have finally downloaded today, 8 months later... what a great set. I was really in the mood for some jamming today. I can't wait to get some more live this June.

I'd reccomend it to you, Bonnacrew, but I'm sure I'm the only person here who enjoys this shit, as is often the case. I'll make a boring post about it anyway!! FUCK YEAH

No, panckaes. I'm a huge WP fan, so is Ron and Calmer, but he doesn't post in this thread. Oh and the 08 set wasn't shit compared to the 06 sunday night set. Check that one out, especially the last ten minutes. I did like their cover of Fairies Wear Boots in 08 though.
