Oh, I just got home from seeing Kinky. It was really fun. It was in a small club here in Burque and there were, at most, 100 people there. Just a fun and energetic show and I'm glad I went.

I'm still going to G. Love on Tuesday, but I might be a little late because I'm going to the UNM basketball game before that. They have a huge game against Utah and I have a great seat. So I'm doing both. I don't wanna let down my sister by skipping out on the concert, but she's a huge basketball fan so she understands be showing up a song or two into the set.

MMJ and L&R conflicted last year...

That's why I added the "interest" part in my statement. You're telling me there was the same amount of interest for Love & Rockets last year as there is for Yeah Yeah Yeahs this year?

I was considering going to Les Savy Fav tonight but didn't because it will go way too late (I have an early meeting in the morning). Friends keep texting me saying it's pretty empty. Fighting temptation to go. :)

The show will be way too late and I have to get up early. I've been up late way too often lately and am exhausted.

This is why the real world sucks. I am a night person, and if I had my way, I'd stay up till dawn every night. But, 5 years of having to get up early means I'm usually tired by 1. :P

Count me in on loving the new album. I just dig the electronic vibe Karen O. is just awesome. Period. Flapjacks, I'm gonna try to rail it for YYYs at one of the festivals. Depending on the schedule, maybe we can coordinate getting really close at Bonnaroo.

I'm going to try to get rail or at least 2nd or 3rd row one show for sure. Unless they're playing some GA venue in San Diego this year, which they probably will, in which case I won't really mind watching from the back.

But actually, I think it might be Coachella for me instead of Bonnaroo. Let's coordinate that one instead! Because I really need to be up close for MBV, even more so, and it is highly likely that they will follow the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

Is it bad that I'm becoming lukewarm on TG at Coachella, now that I have tickets to see them here in SF later that week? I just get the feeling that they're going to conflict with someone else that I'll want to see more.

I bet we could do that, I doubt there will be anybody who I need to see on the Outdoor Stage before YYYs go on. I can't wait until the schedule comes out! Am I wrong for thinking it'll be YYY into MBV into The Cure on the main stage?

Again, Ragey, do you really think YYYs is an Outdoor Theater type of band? Love and Rockets is, YYYs isn't. Then again, maybe I'm crazy.

Yeah, everyone was talking about this SUPER in depth in the "Regarding My Bloody Valentine" thread in the lineup/artists, the general consensus is YYYs > MBV > The Cure, with a possibility of YYYs > The Cure > MBV instead.

The only reason I'd consider the YYYs playing the Outdoor Theatre instead of the Main Stage is Coachella's tradition of not having artists repeat the stages they played on last time, with the exception of a lot of Sahara artists.

Yeah, I'm not sure I'll stay upfront for The Cure or not. My friends all distaste them, for starters, so I'd be ditching them for my internet friends (HA!), but more importantly, I hate standing in the crowds like that when I'm utterly exhausted... and if there's any time to be exhausted it's Sunday night of Coachella. But, the chance to see them up close like that is really hard to pass up. It was hard enough passing up the same thing with Roger Waters after MMJ last year and I don't think I'll be making that same mistake.

It has more to do with being up close for one of my favorite bands, being My Bloody Valentine, but yeah, the YYYs are one of my favorite live bands, so the oppurtunity of being up close for the two back-to-back is SO hard to turn down...

Has there been a band that played main stage one year then was billed 3rd the next time they played and they moved them to the Outdoor Theatre? That's a weird and arbitrary thing that Coachella does. Seriously, what's the point of having a policy like that?

Also, Bonnaroo and plenty of other fesitvals have done the same thing. It makes sense when you think about it. Just like not having the same bands play two years in a row, you want to avoid repetition as much as possible when running a large annual festival like this. So having the same band on the same stage is a little bit repetitive... especially when playing in the same time slot.

:nono I knew it. Haha. That would just seem like such a silly "tradition" if that was really the case. I mean, a band that plays earlier in the day on the main stage could actually get bigger and command another main stage spot a few years later. What do you do then if you have a "tradition" in place? Flapjacks, you are a silly goose.

But who gives a shit if the same band plays the same stage 3 years apart? Really. Having repeat acts is one thing. And even then it's not a HUGE deal unless it happens a lot and it's a repeat headliner. Which Coachella would NEVER do *coughTheCurecough*

Well, the thing with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs is, not only will they have released a new hit album between then and then... (hopefully a hit, anyway)... but it also sounds distinctly different than their old one.

Now, Franz Ferdinand on the other hand. (Sound exactly the same! :nono).

I agree, but explain the implications this would have on your "pattern." Is it a pattern that if the band in question's new album sounds distinctly different then they are exempt from the initial "pattern"?

pancakespancakes
03-01-2009, 10:22 PM
Well if they're playing mostly new songs.... and the new songs sound a lot different than the old songs... than the whole "repetition" thing is avoided because it is, thus, a different-styled set, despite the similar place and time. Right? Right.

RANDOM THOUGHTS

* The new Franz Ferdinand album is ruling my world at the moment. It's so good that if it actually boiled down to a FF Vs. Black Keys conflict I simply do not know what I'd do.

* It WILL go YYY=>MBV=>The Cure

* On that same topic, can you guys PLEASE tell me whats great about "It's Blitz!"? I've listened to it (no lie) all the way through so many times now and I simply cannot believe how mediocre it is.

Josh, you mentioned that it's synthy but it rocks. What I wanted to say is, yeah it's synthy but it sure doesn't rock (imo). Out of the 10 songs, I thoroughly enjoy maybe 5 of them? I guess thats not so bad.

* And one final note, the most important to this, the BonnaThread

AMDOU AND MARIAM ARE FUCKING AMAZING LIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They're this black, blind, African couple that plays drums or drum type things and it's a really magical experience. They have a backup band that is phenomenal and they're just really really fun. You're gunna feel so special after their set. I'm not missing it

I really like the new Franz, but the only act that would get me to miss Black Keys on Friday is SSPU. I guess it's kinda the same deal, huh?

Ok, the YYYs album doesn't "rock" like prior ones, of course, but at least half are upbeat and driving (Zero, Heads Will Roll, Dull Life, Shame & Fortune, Dragon Queen). I know those have to be the five songs you like, I just know it.

If you don't like the softer side of Karen, then the other half might always feel out of place. Personally, Skeletons and Soft Shock (which isn't that slow to begin with) are two of my favorite tracks on the album, and I'm sure you don't like these.

I don't know, man. Give it time, or maybe just seeing it live will help.

Heat is not even a problem if you have the right makeup. 1) There is commercial makeup that stays put through anything. When I decide to wear crazy eye makeup, it takes several passes of makeup remover to get it off. 2) The Cure would be using a base of stage makeup which is meant to stand up under extreme heat (being under full stage lights indoors is FAR hotter than any time you've spent in the crowd at Coachella).

It really just does nothing for me. I just finished going though the whole thing again, and I still only latch onto 3 tracks. It's not that the music is bad, I just don't find it interesting.

I'd never heard that. Maybe I should have said Trent looks like 'all that is man' and Robert looks like 'all that is ?'

Really? There was a lot of speculation, especially in TDS days and earlier, people felt some of the videos came off as homoerotic, it was talked about in public, and he didn't put down rumors. *shrug*

I can definitely see how someone could not be enjoying It's Blitz right now. I'm completely in love with it, but there's something about it in which I can understand how it could turn someone the wrong way.

And all the pre-coachella shows are on Weds/Thur/Fri after I'll have already left for Indio.

Jason, in 2007, I went to a Glasshouse show on Thursday night -- we came in, set up, hung out for a bit, then went to the show. It was fine. We got back a little late, and didn't get to socialize as much, but it was worth it (for me).

I won't be doing it because I suspect I'll be the List Holder this year, but it was definitely possible.

I just got this email at work. Our secretary sent this to the whole company. I was going to start a thread, but I didn't think it was worthy. Anyway, I found the wording to be quite interesting. To me it was a "She really sent this?" type of email. The two subjects of the email are Mexicans. Here:

Hey guys,

A friend of Teo's that actually did some work for us not too long ago is desperately looking for work. I think that he worked much harder than Teo actually so if you need any kind of work done you can reach him at (deleted). I would highly recommend him. He helped Teo remove all the plastic plants and dirt etc. in the lobby planters and replaced all that with rocks and new plants. He really got after it and never complained about the fumes or anything. His name is Emilio and will do anything. He was laid off at the (restaurant) where he was working as a cook for a long time.

Thanks

I'm actually not offended by that email at all. I just found it funny that she said he didn't complain about the fumes and he will do anything. And she compared working habits to the other Mexican who worked for little pay. The implication that he's desperate was funny too.

03-02-2009, 03:12 PM
Well, sure, Tommy, it reads very awkwardly, and she seems a little clueless. If the guy has no idea she is sending this email, it would be really weird, but how do we know from reading that he hadn't mentioned he's out of work and willing to take on any job?

I guess I'm just used to seeing these all the time, not just of mexicans but of anyone who is underemployed. Sometimes I hire people out of those kinds of references. *shrug*.

Methinks you're taking this a little too seriously. I know her, she is well-intentioned. I thought it was funny because it reads awkwardly and it was sent to the entire company. It was more than just me at work who thought it was awkward and somewhat clueless.

p.s.-just listened to the new green day song. And as a massive fan of "American Idiot" (thats right fuckers) I'm gunna say it sounded pretty generic

I agree with you for once American Idiot was fucking great, haven't heard the new song yet though.

I listened to it (Franz)once and forgot about it. Seeing them live though is something I will do. They always put on a great live show and expand their songs with some good breakdowns and extended jams. Just listened to the new YYY's at lunch and was instantly a fan. Looking forward to them this time around. Didn't really care for them at Lolla in 2007 but I think this time will be different.

amyzzz I am really partial to Velvet Goldmine for his participation. Also, Bend It Like Beckham is one of my biggest guilty pleasures. Parminder Nagra is also so darling.

He's mostly in a bunch of indie movies and relatively unknown UK movies that are not very good. :/

Yeah, that's the only movie I've seen him in I think. You get a triple whammy of hot guys in that one (although Christian Bale was not as muscley yet in that movie--and the third guy is Ewan McGregor). I need to watch that movie again soon. It's been a while.

I got talked into seeing "He's Just Not That Into You" last night. The things I do if it means I can get some ass. Geez. Scarlett Johansson was fucking smokin hot in the movie. Made it all worth it. We were off to the side struggling to get center for Muse. Didn't really know anything about them. I honestly thought the show was great but the music wasn't doing it for me since she kept shreeking and howling. Was just frustrated the whole time. But i'm not the type to not give a band another shot.

You think of me while you're watching chick flicks?? OMG LOL.

Did you ever think that my post about a relationship was more about my trying to start an interesting thread and less about the actual subject itself?

Things you think you apparantly know, yet would obviously have no clue since you've never met me:

-desperate to get into a relationship
-creepy and stalkerish
-low self esteem

Here's a good bit of good info tommy:

1) People don't always tell the truth on the internet
2) People are often very different on the net than in real life
3) You're a douche who probably eats shit sandwiches everyday..that sucks.
