lucky you Faxman, good to hear. I was up at the casino last night, like up 350...i was one hand away of winning to leave...but i lost that hand, and made another stupid bet to follow up....lost 300 in 2 spins... and ended up with 0. I almost had bonnaroo paid for.

I dunno, they looked kinda depressed about the low turnout. It came off as more of a practice session and he didn't smile much. I ended up leavnig early so I guess it wasn't that good. I've been meaning to pick up their latest album since it got some really great reviews. I would see them again despite that poor performance. I saw them back in Chicago a few times at Metro and that was at the peak of their popularity I think. They rocked a bit harder at those shows and the crowd was way into it.

Here is a site that keeps track of the clues for 2009
http://www.rpi.edu/~markhm2/rooclues/
What a nice brunch y'all throw. By the way- First Clue for 09 was brought to y'all at the brunch. Anybody catch it?
Info: This is not really a clue in and of itself, but we're a little unsure of what that first clue was, so until/unless we remember I'll leave this up here.
Links: Posted by djjd here, discussion here and in following pages
Guesses: Some speculation that the word "catch" could be a reference to Phish, similar thinking could also lead to Leftover Salmon, Hot Tuna, etc.
Solved: Hey, we don't even know what the actual clue was - of course it's not solved!
gots my shovel, gots some dirt gots some dishes that won't hurt
djjd awakens
Info: We don't think this is really a clue itself either, just our notice of djjd resurfacing and of the fact that he's got some dirt to dish to us. I may take this off the list soon.
Links: Posted by djjd here, discussion here and in following pages
Guesses: We're guessing this doesn't refer to any artists.
Solved: If we're correct, there's nothing to solve!
but someone who is AC/DC isn't in Europe.
Info: AC/DC will be in Europe, so they've been ruled out for the Roo lineup. Thus, we're assuming the reference to Europe isn't crucial here. AC/DC could be slang for bisexual (note that a lot of people think this is unlikely, especially since past clues have mostly referenced the artist's name), or we could be looking for something related to the initials ACDC or to electricity, current, voltage, shocks, etc. There's also a White Stripes song ("Astro") with the lyric "Edison is AC/DC" - at least one clue last year used lyrics from a band Roo-type people would like to make a connection, so this seems like a likely connection.
Links: Posted by djjd here, discussion here and in following pages
Guesses: Based on initials: Animal Collective, Dixie Chicks, Death Cab for Cutie
Based on bisexuality: David Bowie, Ani DiFranco, plus others
Based on electricity: Mars Volta, British Sea Power, Electric Six, TV on the Radio
Other: Phish (reference to their song "AC/DC Bag"), AC/DC cover bands (we all hope not, after last year's Lez Zeppelin excitement, plus this seems too simple), She & Him (AC/DC could be a reference to opposites), various "Edison" bands (especially Edison Glass), Bon Iver (frontman Justin Vernon's previous band was named DeYarmond Edison)
Solved: Not really. Most popular guesses right now are one of the Edison bands or TV on the Radio.
OK- I gotsa go back down in the Radio Roo studio. Keep them ears big and open. Ho ho ho...ho.
Info: This could be nothing, but "keep them ears big" is somewhat odd phrasing, so it could refer to the Big Ears Festival, which is also run by AC Entertainment. The extra "ho" could also be significant.
Links: Posted by djjd here, discussion here and in following pages. The Big Ears Festival website is here.
Guesses: None really, especially since we don't know if this is actually a clue at all. The extra "ho" could point to a rapper.
Solved: No, but there might be nothing to solve.
some of you are BARKING up the wrong tree.
woof woof
time to rust of my dadio
Info: The word "BARKING" was in green text. This clue and the next one seem related, so more info follows.
Links: Posted by djjd here.
Guesses: See following clue!
Solved: Not at all.
some of you are BARKING up the right tree.
dusting off my radio, not my broom
Info: The word "radio" was in orange text (you could call it rust-colored, if you wanted to connect it back to the rust idea). This clue was posted in the speculations thread, while the related one above was posted in the clue thread. The colors could relate to Ireland somehow. The reference to "not my broom" could be an indication that Fleetwood Mac is not playing - djjd has been known to tell us a guess was wrong via clue in the past. "Barking" could be a reference to dogs, trees, or both. The transposed r and d in the first variation of this clue, combined with the reference to dogs, could be a connection to Astro, the dog from the Jetsons - which would bring us back to the White Stripes song "Astro" with the Edison is AC/DC lyric. Dadio (from the previous variation) is also a type of fish, for those of you trying to force every clue to point to Phish.
Links: Posted by djjd here.
Guesses: Animal Collective (this would also relate back to the AC/DC clue, they also have a record label called "Paw Tracks" which is another dog connection), rjd2, Snoop Dogg, Dropkick Murphys, Neil Young (his website is called Rust Radio), Radio Dadio.
Solved: Not yet! Most popular thoughts are Animal Collective and Neil Young.
yes- wouldn't be any fun if it were easy
perhaps this is a clue pointing you where to 'tree' the first good clue.
farmhand has changed
Info: This was posted in reply to a post from fakeplasticjames that read, "Snoop Dogg and TV on the Radio seem the most obvious but I feel like the clues wouldn't be that easy." The reference to where to "tree" the first good clue could be telling us that our clues branch out from one clue and that they're related. This also seems to be telling us that Snoop Dogg and TV on the Radio are NOT the answers to our clues. "Tree" could also be another reference to dogs - as in the way a hunting dog trees its prey.
Links: Posted by djjd here. The post it was replying to is here.
Guesses: None specifically, all we have is speculation on what this is trying to say about other clues.
Solved: Nope.

dude, know your facts. Lauryn Hill produced, and wrote almost everything on that album. There were some people who helped her produce, and edit lyrics, but not enough to have an impact on the direction of the record. So collab, is wrong, it's more like add a few small things to help make it the album it is. My problem with the score is that there are a couple duds on that album, but yeah that album ranks up there with the miseducation.

Everything I have read said it was a group collaboration and the courts apparently agreed since 5 Million was awarded to New Ark for their involvement.
Now, maybe you were there personally and witnessed who wrote what but i'm gonna assume the court made the right call on this one. It was largely a collaborative effort.

Alright so Chad Smith, the drummer of Red Hot Chili Peppers, came into my work this evening (Starfucks). I'm not the biggest of Chili's fans, depsite me being the only one who loved their Coachella performance... but I was REALLY fucking starstruck to be having a conversation with someone who fucking headlined Coachella, my favorite thing on the planet Earth, it was a pretty weird moment to be honest. He was kinda friendly, but also very aloof. I never told him I knew he was, but I kinda implied it, not sure if he picked up on it or not. Anyway, the reason I'm saying all of this is that I had the oppurtunity to ask him about Bonnaroo (or even Coachella for that matter), but I blew it. He was with his wife, and I know how famous people usually are about being talked to in public... it just wasn't the right situation. Regardless, it was for sure the highlight of my last several days, so I feel inclined to share. Just to say I have had a conversation with someone who played on the Coachella mainstage after dark is a lot, not to mention with one of the best guitarists of this generation.

Alright so Chad Smith, the drummer of Red Hot Chili Peppers, came into my work this evening (Starfucks). Isn't he the drummer who looks like Will Ferrell? Either way, that's pretty cool. I was hoping you were gonna say you asked him about Bonnaroo and he said there's no way they're playing.

I'll never understand the hate that RHCP gets on this board. Are they as good as they were in the '90s? No, but not all of us got to see them then. They still have two of the most talented musicians on the planet, and I personally thought they had a much more enjoyable set than RATM in '07.
TommyboyUNM
01-14-2009, 08:45 PM
I don't hate RHCP. I still like Blood Sugar Sex Magik. I just have no interest at all in seeing them live again. In my opinion, they completely mailed it in at Coachella in 2007. I saw them 7 years prior to that and they were pretty good. So they WERE capable of being good in concert, I just think they've become tired and bored.
pancakespancakes
01-14-2009, 08:47 PM
Yeah, I think I understand a little bit of the hate, because they're just kind of "silly," not a very mature/intellectually stimulating kind of band for those of us outside the 10th grade, ya know? Not saying their Limp Bizkit, just saying, they're sort of the same vein as AC/DC. But I honestly don't see how they could ever be compared to Jack Johson as a headliner, and yet they are all the time. It's true, John Fusciante is probably among the five best guitarists alive right now, and Flea on the bass is probably only second to Claypool or Vic Wooten. If Anthony Kiedis didn't sing for that band, they'd surely be one of my favorite bands for what they do. They're not exactly bad at writing riffs either... and their jamming at Coachella pretty much blew my mind.

We must have seen a vastly different show, Tommy. That intro --> Can't Stop was intense, they played Under the Bridge, Readymade killed... I don't know, I like a lot of their post-BSSM material, though. The second disc of Stadium Arcadium has many moments of masterful Frusciante.

FUCK YES. That was certainly the best part. But I seriously got chills during Under the Bridge, which blew me away. I've always loved that song, but they had a pretty fucking hard act to follow in you-know-who that evening. Somehow they did it. Something about being in LA (kind of) with all of the Los Angelinos and hearing that song about LA, it was pretty fucking cool.
Point being, though, I'm not sure I'd watch all of their set at Bonnaroo, but they sure are a good time. They're one of those bands that you can have soooo much fun while watching, but then as soon as they're done, you don't remember much. Jam bands can be sort of similar in my opinion.

Under The Bridge and Higher Ground were the only 2 songs I actually enjoyed. They just really rocked a lot more when I saw them in 2000. I think a lot of the people who were disappointed with that set are using a previous RHCP concert experience as a reference. Maybe I was a little tired and the sun kicked my ass all day too. Though that didn't seem to be a problem during Rage the next night.
JSam67
01-14-2009, 08:53 PM
Yeah, I agree, pancakes. I saw them at Lolla the year before and was kinda meh about it, but they brought it to Coachella. That intro was WILD, loved it. Yeah, didn't top AF for me of course, but they did an admirable job following, I thought. And next to AF and Bjork, it was probably the band I enjoyed most in '07.

Yeah I think that's the case, my good friend I was with said they weren't nearly as good as when he had seen them for the first time. But, more importantly, they had to follow Arcade Fire at the very place and time that band had made quite a name for themselves, so that isn't really the easiest. Chili's should have just switched places with them.

Rage at Coachella is my #1 concert and was what got me into going to concerts. They also were what brought me to Coachella as well, which outside of Street Scene, was not just my first music festival, but first large-scale concert I ever went to (some punk rock shows on the side, and that was it). Anyway. I don't remember much but that is still the greatest show I've ever seen, for a lot of personal reasons. It was a big time in my life. They're my favorite band outside of Genesis and Broken Social Scene, so that's probably why.
But Chili's were different. They were kind of like a big huge party. But Rage was something more monumental. I understand why some people were sort of disappointed. But, again, I only remember so much.

Ha, yeah you're right about that. Rage was a big deal to me, obviously, since I got a ticket basically just to see them. But then Coachella happened, and we all know the rest. And I personally thought Rage was much better at Lolla this year, but I'll never forget the moment when they came on stage and that place erupted when they introduced themselves.
So I guess I'm the only one who is just whatever about Erykah Badu? She's cool, sure, but if I were a betting man, I'd say I'll be at a different set.

But then Coachella happened, and we all know the rest.
Hahaha, very well put. You took the words right out of my mouth. I discovered Arcade Fire about a month or two before Coachella, without even realizing they were playing until later... of course, I fell in love, but then I had no idea about their live show until I actually saw it.
But yeah, that was the only time I saw Rage, which is why they really still get my vote for the farm this year. Everyone said their other sets were much better, albeit less monumental in nature. But I'm just a fan, and I really wouldn't mind seeing a set I could actually focus on watching. I do think think they're a bit on the "aggro" side for the Roo. But it's aggression with a lot of purpose, so it's different. The hippies will be fine!
JSam67
01-14-2009, 09:59 PM
Damn, I wish there was a chance for AF at the Roo this year, that would really seal the deal for me. Yeah I don't see RATM at the Roo, but I never saw Metallica playing it either, so who knows?
I don't think I've ever anticipated lineups (Coach, Roo) so much without even caring what's on there. I just want one or two things to get excited about. Band of Horses at Coachella is a fine start.
pancakespancakes
01-14-2009, 10:08 PM
I was going pretty crazy about who's playing Coachella, just like last year, (except at this point there have 7-8 bands confirmed I'm crazy about seeing, so I'm fine) but for whatever reason, I could care less about the Roo. I guess that says that A) there's more to Bonnaroo than the music, but B) they pretty much never disappoint, or appear to. Unlike Coachella, who quite often appears to disappoint only to later blow us away.
As I've said before, the only band I really really really care about being there is the Allmans. And that's really it. If they are there, I'm probably not going to care about much else that weekend. And if they're not, then I'm going to be a bit depressed. But that's just about all I need to get really really unbelievably excited.
JSam67
01-14-2009, 10:16 PM
The Allmans, huh? Interesting. Massive Attack would be mine, but since I doubt they'll be there, it's diminished my anxiety for a lineup. I'm excited about my first Roo, just the whole experience, plus going with all you guys is going to be very cool, much like PAW last year at Coachella.
I've resigned myself to a shitty Coachella lineup near the top this year. Any headliner that I actually want to see will be a bonus, I think. And as much as I'm hoping for someone like Gorillaz, I think the best I can hope for is Tears For Fears as a subheadliner, and I'd be fucking thrilled.
pancakespancakes
01-14-2009, 10:23 PM
Is Massive Attack really that impossible for Bonnaroo this year? I mean, I know they're sort of a strange fit, but Roo always gets a band like that or two... and with the new album hopefully being out in the next few months? I'd venture to guess it's in the cards. But I don't know much.
And yeah don't expect to run into me the day the Allmans are playing, I'll probably be camping out for my front row spot, barring any big conflicts... they're pretty much the only band and at the only place I'd do that for at this point in my life.

I would also just like to add that I'm killing myself for only discovering the Drive-By Truckers a couple months ago. I'm currently listening to them and only falling in love with them more. Bonnaroo would have been the most perfect place on the planet to see them, and I blew it. I hope they conflicted with someone huge. They played OSL too, and I blew that. I wonder the chances of them doing two years in a row? They strike me as being Roo-regulars. And there's no possible way this band doesn't kick serious ass live. It's just that kind of music. And it's tailor-made for being seen on a farm in Tennessee in the summertime surrounded by hippies, drugs & tie-dye.

Drive-By Truckers was the most average band I think I've ever seen. So much so that they became the measuring stick for my ex and I for whether or not we like a band. If the band is worse than DBT then they suck. If the band is better than DBT then they're good. That rating system has creeped into everyday life as well. "How's your job going?" "Eh, it's a little better than Drive-By Truckers."

About the Chili Peppers I really liked the Coachella set. I had seen once before in 2003 at the Pallidium with System of a Down. And it was ok but Fruscainti's guitar kept giving him problems the whole set. He kept storming off the stage as a result. Half of the set was Flea and Chad just jamming. It was cool, but not a proper set at all. So The Coachella set made up for it in my mind. Plus Under the Bridge was amazing that is one of my favorite moments from Coachella in 2007.

Saw them play here at a venue that's famous for it's assholey security staff. The staff made the very terrible error of trying to confiscate a bunch of kids' glowsticks. They reckoned without the utterly fucking enormous glowstick stockpile I'd smuggled in. I passed out so many fucking glowsticks they just had to give up and let us have our fucking glowstick fun. We could have gone home with suntans, there were so many fucking glowsticks going on. It was awesome.
The funny thing is, I don't even really like glowsticks.
I just have a very peculiar sense of justice.
Feather would have been proud of us that night though.

Rage on Sunday, Arcade Fire on Saturday, and Sonic Youth on Friday, that made the best music festival I've ever been too. But the first is always the best isn't it?
Without Rage, I would've gone to Coachella 07.
This combined with the fact that more than half of this thread came to Coachella for the first time for Rage is kinda funny, you have to admit...

How is this possible? Aren't these things the exact opposite?
Perhaps I misused that word actually? I just mean he was nice, but he was pretty stupid and not very conversational. But I was talkative. And he was nice to me back. But geez, seeing someone like that up close makes me realize how much I would not want to grow up like them. That man does not seem to have much of an admirable life. And when did he get so old? He had gray hair and wrinkles all over... maybe it's the past drug addictions...

apparently through 50 odd pages of discussion, inforoo figured out that all the clues were leading them to a new twitter page from the DJ that gives out the clues, and once they solved that he told them he would start the ACTUAL clues tomorrow. Here's hoping for the easily solved (aka Janis Joplin's Preserves) clues from last year.

"Hello?"
"I don't know what you want me to say. I'm shocked. I'm speechless. It's like you just put a knife in my heart"
"You're being such a drama queen! *lols*"
She said something about how one of her friends down there (she lives in the keys) is a big big fan and convinced her to give them another shot. See? This is what happens when I'm not fucking there to keep thing under control

It is supposedly about fisting. I think it's a metaphor for something. I've heard about modern technology or something. Maybe Dylan can clear this up for us.

Bill Cosby excluded it was between Uncle Phil from Fresh Prince and Carl the dad in Family Matters. I called bullshit and nominated Roc. One of the best shows of its time. They were the first series to go live for an entire season since the 50's. I loved Roc. Ton Loc was on that show too and it deal with real issues. None of that huxtables brady bunch bullshit.

Hmmm. Charles S. Dutton (Roc) is extremely underrated, but he didn't really have the overall warmth that a Carl Winslow had. But Carl was sometimes too nice and I just felt sorry for him.

Woh woh woh. Where do you get off calling Eugene Hutz a "***?" That is the guy who get me onstage to propose to my girlfriend. I can say that Eugene Hutz is an awesome guy!
