The Wakarusa lineup always kicks ass. They already have so many great bands confirmed and many of them are playing 2 sets or at least a late night set.
STS9
Galactic
Buckethead
Yonder Mountain (definitely check them out Josh since you like Avett)
Railroad Earth (same as above)
Steve Kimock
Perpetual Groove
Digable Planets (WTF? big surprise there)
Split Lip Rayfield (more great bluegrass)
Lucero
Boombox (Ohio represent!)
JFJO
This lineup already owns. If it weren't for school I'd be going to this.

Why are you guys thinking about bringing brownies and cookies on a plane? Don't you realize how many people have them for sale there. In 06 I had the strongest fucking brownies ever before the disco biscuits/ump late night set. All I had was a couple brownies for $5, I didn't smoke or drink much and I was realllllllllly fuckkkking high. They sell them on every street in every campground, just like all the drugs.
This isn't Coachella people. Let me put it in perspective for you:
Coachella = DEA
Bonnaroo = Tommy Chong + Tony Montana + Amy Winehouse + Trey Anastasio
Don't risk bringing anything on a plane because it will all be there (and then some) when you get there.

I went to Vancouver a few years ago (05) and good weed was WAY more than $40 an ounce. It was more like $40 for 1/8 of an ounce. Since we were tourists you might think we got ripped off a little but I really don't think we did at all. We made good friends with some locals and I'm convinced we didn't pay much more than they paid. Obviously, we didn't bother with schwag. In other words, it was a little cheaper there than in most parts of US but not even close to that significant of a difference. It still takes a lot of time and work to grow no matter what country you're in.

They played ATP New York last year. The one with My Bloody Valentine. I don't know exactly how to describe their music, but it is somewhere between noise rock and hardcore punk. They are know for their frantic live shows. I don't see how they would fit in at Bonnaroo, but I would love to see them.

No no I was comparing it to the Roo... we have about 20 confirmed-ish bands for Coachella but only about 5 for the Roo. And yeah last year was about the same amount for Coachella to be honest, but I wouldn't know how to go back and look that up...
rage patton
01-10-2009, 12:40 PM
20 confirmed acts? The only confirmed acts for Coachella I know are Buka Som Sistema (or something like that) and Fleet Foxes. By this time last year we had atleast The Breeders and Spiritualized, and many sources claiming Portishead were playing. This year have have no big confirmations.

I'm going to wholeheartedly disagree with Bonnaroo kicking Coachellas ass because they let people know when the lineup is coming out. I love the fact that Coachella is loaded with surprises. The dates, the date the lineup comes out, the bands. Everything is a secret and it should be. Then one day roughly the same time every year boom, the bomb drops and that's all anyone talks about for the next 3 months while more surprises continue throughout until set times are confirmed. Srsly, when the Roo lineup is released and we see Bruce Springsteen, Phish and The Dead is anyone gonna go nuts? I doubt it, they are expected at this point. You know the date, it's February 3rd, no mystery there. You are anticipating one specific date and you know when it is. With Coachella you know one thing. Late January. Speculation grows and anticipation builds as it's all a huge mystery. The headliners for Coachella at this point. Still a mystery.
TommyboyUNM
01-10-2009, 05:15 PM
Faxman........the headliners at Roo aren't that fucking important! They mysteries lie in who will play the late-night sets and what "undercard" bands will be there. The anticipation just does not lie in who will be headlining.

For me, other than actually attending, the most exciting part of coachella is line up announcement day and seeing what kind of crazy shit they can pull out. The most exciting part of bonnaroo is schedule announcement day and seeing exatly what crazy ways they are planning to use the plethora of artists on the line up.

I agree. I rambled too long. The topic was knowing a lineup release day or not knowing it. I like the way Coachella does it better, that is all. I'm not even arguing if those are good headliners or not. They are probably fantastic I was discussing the surprise factor is all.
I even think Paul is likely to be right that the coachella headliners won't be very exciting, but only because I like to keep my expectations very low.
I didn't mean to imply in any way that headliners were the be all end all because it's never been my concern for any festival. On Average I like one headliner a year for these fests so I don't bank on much more than that. :)
Backwater
01-10-2009, 07:19 PM
The main difference is that roo has no curfew. When it gets late at coach, if you don't like the headliner or other smaller acts playing at the same time, you're screwed. Last year on Friday night, since Fatboy sucked, I was completely bored. Since the late night sets always kick so much ass, it's actually a blessing to not like a roo headliner or two. I don't know how many times I can stress this. Ask Sasha and Digweed which festival they prefer.
Metallica was actually a huge surprise to me last year. Then again, I wasn't all up on the insider info last year, so lots of people might have already known. I definitely didn't.
paulb

SLAYER!!!!!
seriously though, NIN would make sense. However, I don't think roo feels that they need to top themselves in the big, heavy band category anyway. I forget exactly what Trent said in Vegas because I was tripping but they won't be playing too many shows this year, right? An instrumental set, with mostly Ghosts type stuff would be ideal for roo.

any NIN is great for the Roo...but im hoping Bonnaroo keeps the hard rock band each year.... and who could do Bonnaroo....RATM/NIN/Heaven and Hell/Ozzy Osbourne/Megadeth/Black Label Society... maybe Muse?

Heaven and Hell?!?! Fuck Ronnie, that would be an insult. Ozzy is WAY too old, and I've seen him tons of times already. Maybe that's just selfish of me, but yea, his time is up. I would be 100% down for Megadeth and Muse. However, I would be VERY surprised if Megadeth ever plays bonnaroo. BLS is garbage and please no more RATM. If they aren't going to play any new material what's the point? So anyway, even though they aren't really heavy, I think Muse would be great for roo 09 and it's very possible, isn't it?

I have a feeling Muse is very possible for Roo this year. And any chance I get to see them play is a treat. They put on one of the best live shows I've ever seen and would be a hit on the farm. And if that happened, that would be 6 times I've seen them in 6 different states. :)

Best bet at the moment is Soulfly or Cavelera Conspiracy... what about Hellyeah? actually, Mudvayne are touring now...so thats no more. Hopefully Bonnaroo wouldnt stoop so low to get Smashing Pumpkins...despite them being a band that can fill a 3h+ set... SOAD would be too unreal....but Bonnaroo couldnt do it.

I know I'm a little late to chime back in here... (just got back from seeing Gran Torino, do yourself a favor and see that movie)... but I just really really like knowing what date we're going to know the lineup. Other than that, I really do appreciate all of the surprises. I wish I had more self-control, but sometimes I screw with that and go into the rumors threads to find out who's probably playing. As of two weeks ago I realized I just knew way too much and need to hangout till the whole thing comes at once. (And at this point I already know it's impossible for me to be disappointed, so that helps.) So, in other words, it's really looking perfect for the Roo in that respect. The only problem is that Roo is so much more predictable, there's soooo many repeats from two years ago. So there's really going to be less surprises there. But I still think there's going to be some sort of surprise headliner or two (not Phish, Bruce, or The Dead). And it's kind of like Christmas, I know when it's going to happen, where we get that big surprise great lineup, and so I can look forward to it more easily...

Yeah I stopped watching when I was about 14 or 15. I did hang out on YouTube one night recently and watched old videos of the wrestling I remember. I watched The Undertaker vs Yokozuna in a casket match. A few Royal Rumble matches and clips of the ladder match between Shawn Michaels and Razor Ramon. Talking about it ... sure as hell doesn't make it happen. If you really think the Talking Heads will play together again then you're just lying to yourself. It's WAY too soon for an SCI reunion. Honestly, I doubt it will ever happen anyway and IF it does it will be about ten years from now.

But yea, your point remains, hip hop will always be a part of bonnaroo. Nothing new. I actually had a conversation about this in the nati a few weeks ago. This girl was complaining about Kanye being at roo, saying "what the fuck is a rapper doing at bonnaroo? He has no business being there in the first place." I really think that would be a festival performance by them really worth seeing. And everyone on inforoo (unlike this board) loves them, their Mars Volta thread is one of the biggest threads in the Troo Music Lounge.
So if the Roo gets the Volta this year I don't think I'll even care who else plays. Last year was really their year, but it's still not out of the question. It's not like the Bonnaroo crowd doesn't really really want it. I just think that would take the cake for that weekend.

Sigur Ros 2006 was my worst experience out of the 5 times I have seen them. 1. they had a very short set. 6 songs. 2. Love or hate Phish, it just doesn't matter. All of us that have been to Bonnaroo have been trying to stress for months that the headliners just don't matter all that much. Everyone is just conditioned to think that is the most important thing at a festival. It's not. ESPECIALLY at Bonnaroo.

Phish is one band out of 120 that will play Roo.
WHY ARE PEOPLE SO CONCERNED ABOUT THE HEADLINERS!!!!!
Sushy might be able to give you some insight about that one, as he seems to care more about the headliners than anyone else.
Mr. Dylanja
01-11-2009, 11:39 AM
farrett222, you're right man, the Roo is NOTHING BUT jambands, everywhere you turn there is another jamband playing. It's like they set the festival up to brainwash you with their jamminess, you would be miserable the whole time, I highly suggest you save your money.

I'm dying for those long sets, but i'm just not into the jam bands..
You know, I still think they're worth a try, I thought the same thing until I actually saw all of the jam bands this past year. I've always been a fan of the Allman Bros, a quasi-jam band, and a closet-Dead fan, but the idea of all those indulgent 3 hour jamming sets kind of disgusted me until I experienced it myself. You might not like it still, just saying. Keep an open mind on the jam band thing.
I know this is quite redundant for this thread, just typing it all out again... it goes for everyone here who is grossed out by the idea.

headliners do count. I can catch fleet foxes, bon iver, ra ra riot etc.. at small clubs whenever. i go to festivals to get amazing headliners with an amazing group of smaller bands...it's a package deal. if you took out the top three bands of bonnaroo and coachella the ticket prices would only be 50 bucks. why not ask for that then if you don't care about them
But can you get the Bonnaroo atmosphere at those small clubs whenever? Unless the atmosphere of a music festival doesn't matter at all to you. Seeing MMJ at Bonnaroo with that atmosphere was worth the trip from Albuquerque to me. But, hey, that's just me I suppose.

Sigur Ros 2006 was my worst experience out of the 5 times I have seen them. 1. they had a very short set. 6 songs. 2. They had some sound issues at the beginning and Jonsi looked angry and frustrated and it showed in their performance. Took them 3 songs in to break in their stride. Not a "Bad" set per say. Just not as good as the other times I have seen them. I blame Kanye and Common for their set changes taking forever.
lol i am so fucked in the brain sometimes ... if sigur ros was in 06 and not 07, then yes i saw them so i guess it didnt overwelm me ..... and dylan, that was a funny story .... it just shows one day you will drop by for a bowl and we can have a rap ... but alas neat and tidy, nope, i have so much media and gadgets all over my house ... hundreds of cd, dvds, etc ... three or four keyboards, guitars, and electronic stuff in every corner lol ... it upsets tygerlady because she is a neat person :) .... cr****

excellent point. i agree and that's why i'm at coachella every year. but bonnaroo is a pretty expensive trip so I was hoping for something huge...i'd be happy with the white stripes headlining. seeing pearl jam would have been great too.
