DC Talk is hot shit:

What will people think
When they hear that I'm a Jesus freak
What will people do when they find that it's true
[oh oh]
I don't really care if they label me a Jesus freak
There ain't no disguising the truth

Well, first you have to remember that it being inforoo, virtually every clue that DJ JD has given has been interpreted as either a reference to Phish, The Dead or Zeppelin.

But specifically in this case, it's AC/DC Bag, a Phish song.

I see. So they give vague references that can mean anything from tori amos ot led zeppelin and watch everyone go nuts guessing.

Jesus could you imagine if we started getting nuggets of info like that here?

Think ancient Egypt.....

AC/DC the band has nothing to do with the clue I think. I think the clue is too statements seperated by a / the first states that it is Animal Collective, and the second is a a useless statement about DC not being in Europe.

At least that is how I interpret the clue.

Jesus christ yall talk alot, 5 new pages in like 15 hours. I read the first 2 then skipped and typed this. I figure i will give my two cents on the whole eating fungus thing. i found the food that matches the texture completely is granola bars. Crunchy but not dried out. it works effectively to mask the texture. I will also mention that I have came across people selling mind alterators at roo both times within the first ten minutes of arriving. THey are all there, actually the hardest thing to find this year was herb. IT was still out there, just not around my campsite for some reason. We come prepared anyways though.
Is anyone flying to Bonnaroo? i know its feasible at Coachella, but you need to much stuff for Bonnaroo unless you are meeting up with friends.

For me that wouldnt be feasible, I have way too much camping gear. Maybe I will post the ultimate supply list for Bonnaroo later on, but its about as long as this thread. I basically have all the camping gear for my group of people which was 5 this year and four last year. We will probably rent a van again since my friend works at Enterprise.
This is what i have to work with.

I read this on Consequence of Sound today... awesome fucking news! Incredibly great band! They are just improving with every new album, and their new one is amazing. They went from being an interesting experimental emo/hardcore kind of band to being classic proggy soul/rock with beautiful string fluorishments they have going now. And they're great live!

Here's them performing the song AKA M80 the Wolf in San Diego when I saw them. (I didn't film it).

I'm not shitting on your band, but isn't it a little strange that you had to drill this into yourself for a year before you thought they were decent? You brainwashed yourself into liking something that is... well... I'm sure you remember your gut feeling to the band however long ago it was that you first listened to them.

It took me a year to grow into Arcade Fire "funeral". I first got into Neighborhood #3 and then #1 but it was a long time before I really got into the rest of it. A lot of it was not understanding the lyrics or knowing what he was saying. Anyway that album is pretty great and I don't think I brainwashed myself as much as I made sure I kept giving it a chance when I could.

Well that would be pretty insane if that was the case, but it's actually the cause of my friends. They were onto them much sooner than I was. And it wasn't constant listening that lead to my liking, just occasionally they would play them while I was in the building. In time, I got to know the songs better, and then I understood what makes their music interesting. I'm not sure I would call that self-induced brainwashing, but if you must. They're not for everyone, but for a lot people what they do is really amazing.

There were two songs I actually loved on first listen though. Everything else was just atonal noise to me.

Length of time to "get" a band is an interesting topic here. I'm usually a fairly critical first listener, so albums have a tendency to grow on me moreso than instantaneously falling in love. The trump card is the live show. Most of my favorite bands now are those that I've seen live and was impressed.

Arcade Fire is a good example, faxy. I had Neon Bible, was slowly "getting it", then happened to see them at Coachella and had the most spiritual experience of my life. That changed my perception of that album quite a bit, I heard it much differently from that point forward.

It can change in a bad way too, if the band is dreadful live. Like Ally, you saw Deerhunter and hated them, and if that's the case with me, I'm going to be sad, because Microcastle is just phenomenal.

LooseAtTheZoo
12-22-2008, 10:10 PM
I've found that some of my favorite bands have a densely layered instrumental sound with lots of different orchestrations to wade through. As a result, I don't fully appreciate how great said band is until I've listened to them enough times to let every aspect of the song sink in (Pink Floyd is a great example).

12-22-2008, 10:11 PM
Yeah things definitely changed for me after finally seeing Arcade Fire. They went from band I really adored to one of my favorite bands pretty instantly. Never saw it coming.

I'm someone who likes almost everything he goes through the trouble of hearing though. So I'll be giving it a second listen 85-90% of the time. And sometimes that is brought with better results than the first time, such as with Animal Collective and a million other bands.

I also think it depends on how you listen to it. If you're just on your computer, doing work and letting iTunes run, you're not fully experiencing the album and the music and it can affect your opinion. I think it's always better to really hunker down and actually listen to music, almost as if you're watching a movie, to be able to drink it all in. At that point, if you've given a band an honest shot going through those mediums, second listens aren't always going to be any more revelatory, in my opinion.

I seem to have misplaced my newly-purchased Strawberry Jam, but I am genuinely curious about what I haven't heard from Animal Collective. My guess is I've only really heard songs more dependent on the yelper dude than (Sexual Harassment) Panda Bear, who gives me a Beach Boys feel. Either way, I'm going to give them an honest try. SPIN's review of the new album made them sound like something right up my alley.

Have you heard sexual harrassment Panda's album yet? (The 2007 one?)

Most Animal Collective songs are actually dependent on crazy-yelping Avey Tare. It wasn't until Panda's album Person Pitch came out that we realized there were two geniuses driving the group. I'm not the biggest Strawberry Jam fan to begin with, but I actually think it would be a lame album to start with. Feels or Sung Tongs would be much better.

I used to find Avey kinda on the obnoxious side... but now I consider him among my five favorite vocalists alive right now. Panda's great too but he doesn't really deliver in the live setting the way Avey does. Plus it's just a Brian Wilson imitation anyway, which is great, but not too original. Well Faxy, I saw robots. And they were rocking. Almost as if they were robot rocking. The visuals were a Daft Punk/NIN hybrid. The pyramid was there, but there were NIN-like screens. Primus is one of the those bands that's just so fun to watch live. It's damn near impossible to not have a good time at their shows. I would love for them to be there again. Les will be there regardless but Primus is due for a return and I really hope it happens.

I mentioned this once before and SoulDischarge was the only one who acknowledged it but King Crimson would be perfect for bonnaroo. I'm surprised they've never played there before.

The best story I ever heard of King Crimson was they were playing a music festival somewhere back in 1968 and they played before Hendrix and they just killed...Hendrix actually did not want to follow them because they put on such a epic show...

Not surprising in the least. I can't think of many bands better than King Crimson. If you're Tool's biggest influence then you know you did something right.

It would be kinda amazing if Bonnaroo got Bowie and Coachella didn't. It just doesn't make sense because he's such a perfect fit for Coachella, whereas Bonnaroo would be better off with Springsteen, or even Zeppelin. So I really don't think it will happen.

I'm actually warming up to the idea of AC/DC at Bonnaroo though, because I'm just now starting to remember how much I loved em when I was 13. I was checking out some pictures of their recent tour, and they seem like they put on a pretty grand live show. As much as I think it might ruin the Roo mood, it can't be more than Metallica, so I think it should be fine in that respect. Apparently these clues have nothing to with them though. Just sayin.

King Crimson = AFUCKINGMAZING

I have an obsession with most things progrock, and while I've never been obsessed with Crimson the way I am with Genesis and Yes, it would still be incredible seeing them live, since they're still kicking, unlike the former two. Red is one of my favorite albums of all time, I'm pretty sure if they played at least one of those five songs I would go home happy.

Last year I think they were two weeks apart. This year, seeing as Coachella moved it's dates up and a lot of us are expecting a subsequent earlier lineup announcement, they could in theory be more like a month apart. But it's impossible to predict of course...

Alright enough about Animal Collective. I had a BonnaDream last night. Daft Punk was playing the Roo. That probably just means I'm crazy, but it seemed to fit so well. Hopefully BonnaDreams do come true.

I bought my bonnaroo tickets the day they went n sale, and that night I had a dream that i was hanging out with Phish and they told me they were gonna play Bonnaroo. So far Bonnaroo hasnt said anything that the rumor wasnt true like the Led Zeppeiln rumors last year which they shot down. i would say the odds are good. If we both predict the future, then Bonnaroo will rule.

Patrick is absolutely dynamite, Dan is fucking amazing but for some reason every time there's a shot of Pat I swooooon. It reminds me of the first time I saw them back in 05, my friend and I had never seen anyone hit drums that hard before. The way this concert was filmed is so beautiful, amazing close-ups and angles as well as some phenomenal lighting. Considering I wasnt able to see TBK not once this year, the dvd is hitting the spot so well.

What I'm trying to say is....

I still had a great time at the Cardinals game yesterday, but she was being weird because I was text messaging every now and then. So Faxman contributed to it because we were texting back and forth during the Bears game. She said that was rude of me, but she wouldn't say shit when I tried to make conversation with her anyway. I'm not gonna see her much today or tomorrow. We're going to a Coyotes game on Wednesday and doing god knows what on Thursday. She works Friday, at which point I'm going to pack up and meet up with a friend in Phoenix. He's coming for the Cardinals playoff game and I'm going too. Woot. I am at work, still bummed about the game yesterday. I am really hoping for some solid lineup leaks in the next few days since we are getting close.

What's the BonnaCrew doing today? I'm in Tucson right now. This chick is at work and I'm just chillin out for the day. She and I are totally not vibing. It's actually almost comical. Woot. I'm just gonna stay with him and his friend the rest of the weekend and drive back down here on Sunday to catch my flight.

Enjoy Calexico in Tucson. It hurts, but I can't go. Oh well.

TOMMY!!! Sorry to read that things aren't going well with your lady friend. I am looking forward to seeing you tomorrow. I hope things get better down there.

Things aren't gonna get better, but I have Calexico and the Phoenix meetup to look forward to.

I proposed to her that we just treat the rest of the week like a friendly visit because we obviously aren't vibing, in hopes that the tension would go down a little bit. But, at this point, she clearly isn't amused by me at all. She teared up a bit when I had that talk with her on the drive from Phoenix to Tucson last night. I'm just not a fan of ignoring the elephant in the room. I'm gonna have fun regardless, so she can just join me in having fun or she can continue to be grumpy and emo.

So, it's Calexico and friends With Sergio Mendoza opening. I'm hoping the with friends = Luz De Luna and Salvador Durna but I suppose it's not a guarantee. The last show in October specifically named the mariachis and Luz. Either way it's gonna be great.

I'm getting out of here in less than 2 hours.

Sorry to hear that you and the chick aren't vibing Tommy. It sounds like you're making the most out of your time there though. I'm really looking forward to NYE and then going back to LA. It was fun hanging out with old friends, my brother, and my one cousin who I get along with but I'm more than ready to go back to the west coast. The one thing here I will miss though are the basement hip hop parties. They don't seem to have many of these in LA and there's always a lot more tension and hostility with battling out there. Two complete strangers ripping each other to shreds in freestyle battles, then being cool with each other 5 seconds after is something I just never see on the west coast. Here people seem to be in it more for the love of the music instead of self-promotion. The hip hop scene is one of the only things I really like about my hometown.

It's such a shame that Scribblejam isn't just two months earlier. That way we could do both Bonnaroo and Scribblejam in one trip. You're more than welcome here anytime. That goes for the rest of you guys too. However, I don't know if I'll come back here for another year (next Christmas.) It's still up in the air whether I'll be driving up after bonnaroo or not.

You're already looking to airline tickets? I thought 1 1/2 months before leaving was the cheapest time.

Thanks, Tim. I've been trying to come up with a good review of Saturday night's MMJ experience, but I just can't do it justice, so here's a brief summation.

I've never experienced having (literally) the best seat in the house, much less for one of my favorite bands. Throw in the fact that the Chicago Theatre is beyond beautiful, and, well, it was just so surreal. When we walked up to our seats, I burst out into uncontrollable giggles because I felt like I was dreaming. Had to pinch myself throughout the show.

The show, by the way, was pure magic. Coming out rocking with Evil Urges --> TMIGTS pt 1 --> Off the Record, finishing with one of my favorite encores I've ever seen from anyone (Wordless Chorus --> Highly Suspicious --> Anytime --> One Big Holiday), plus some real rarities for me (Where to Begin, War Begun, Phone Went West, Evelyn Is Not Real). And Gideon continues to be the best live song I think I've ever heard.

I shared sooo much eye contact with Jim James, he came over 25+ times directly to me for solos and audience reaction. I almost grabbed one of his extraneous hairs from his cape, thinking "oh Salah would totally do this", but chickened out... I did get a pick, though.

My friend got some ridiculously awesome pictures standing right next to me up there, I'll post them when he sends them to me.

Jim's still pretty injured, too. It didn't hinder his rocking whatsoever, but when the show ended, he could barely bend down to pick up his stocking cap. He's such a fucking trooper. No facial hair btw, Salah, he was difficult to recognize at first.

All in all, spectacular. I can't wait for the Roo when hopefully we all get a chance to see them play another legendary late set. Bonnarooooooo!!!

omg I totally lol-ed Josh! I would have most definitely stolen a hair or two and attempted to clone my own personal JJ for home use, but a pick is so fantastic. The show sounded creamy and waiting till the encore for Highly Suspicious is EXCELLENT. Hurray for MMJ!!

JSam67
12-30-2008, 01:02 AM
Thanks, Salah! Cliff and Andrea went, and so did Sarah at the last minute...all of them shared your sentiments about Highly Suspicious being most glorious.

At one point, Jim's stocking cap fell while rocking, right in front of my hands. He had to have known how tempted I was, because he immediately kicked it to the back of the stage, mid-solo. I was so mad at him for maybe a nanosecond.

Ha! I admit, I wouldn't have taken the hat either, I maybe would've touched it but that is far too bold. Plus it probably would have angered the mighty JJ.

Also, off topic but I had another dream where I stumbled onto the smiths rehearsing/sound-checking for Coachella. Hmm...

Also also, check out the Bonna/MMJ (as well as beck and TWS) love on my laptop (testing out my new camera)
