Holy Cow that sounds right up my alley. I mean, WOW that sounds like fun. It reminds me of one of my favorite scenes in Labyrinth, when Jennifer Connelly and David Bowie are at that really trippy Masquerade Ball themselves and theres this beautiful Bowie song playing (the name of it escapes me but it's one of my favorites!). It seems like its tailored made for those of us who'll be tripping ballz

No, not yet. We're going VIP (don't hate me because I'm lazy - the 5 minute walk to and from Centeroo is so worth it to me!) and I need to save a bit more first. But I will definitely be going.

I just talked to my friend and fellow Roo 08 partner and told him what was up in terms of meeting all you guys in Nashville (it is Nashville, right?). I was so worried he was gunna be iffy about it, but he's down! Even better, he says he has tons of people he plans to bring to. Like a two car caravan, this is great news to me because I thought he was kinda relying on me to make plans. I was starting to worry we wouldnt have car space, but things seem to be falling into place. We're gunna take up a big chunk of farm space :pulse

I'm pretty sure this hasn't exactly been brought up yet... but I just wanted to ask all of you Californians, Arizonans, or other-related West Coastians, are you planning on driving or flying this year?
I would really really like to drive out this year, just take a whole week or two off from work, school, and life in general, and explore the country on my way too and from the Roo... but I'm just trying to figure if it's worth it, and more importantly, how long it would take without being behind the wheel 24 hours a day. Have any of you guys done it or are planning to do it this year?
(And here's to hoping gas prices don't skyrocket back to what they were last year)

We've had a wonderful year and a half of playing shows, and I don't see any reason to not play more shows. The thing is there's only so many hours in the musical day, and mine are very occupied right now.

Agreed, they seem like such a Bonnaroo act to me. It's very fitting. I think I'd prefer em at Coachella though seeing as they haven't been there since 2005... and they just played Roo in 07.
But HOLY SHIT I was recently thinking of candidates for the late night Which Stage this year, how great would Wilco be pulling off 3 hours?! Obviously they're more Sunday afternoon types than Saturday at 2 AM types... but the idea of an epicly-long fan-favorites-saturated Wilco set sounds really perfect to me. They could definitely pull something really special off, one of those all-time shows to remember.

It really amazes they've never played Coachella. I think I brought that up in the Calexico Thread a while ago. But seriously, not to get off topic, it's a travesty!
At Bonnaroo they seem a bit less-fitting, but it would still be awesome. Their worldy vibes would fit in really well. Definitely a sweet Saturday or Sunday This Tent act.
I totally like the idea of Wilco at either fest.
The one thing about Wilco at Coachella is the dang hour-long set... they really should never play less than 1 1/2 hours in my opinion.

Well I've actually seen the setlist, and it really kicks ass seeing as how they played my all-time favorite Wilco song, At Least That's What You Said, which they pretty much never play... but other than that, yeah I haven't heard much good things about that set. Perhaps they need to redeem themselves, then? As in... once in April, once in June?

What does everyone think of Bonnaroo trying to get a big name hip hop act again? Was the Kanye debacle this year enough for superfly to back off from the idea, or will the press just fuel it? do you think they would only go out on a limb for a "high character" act like Beastie Boys, or what?
I'm thinking about this because I just watched a bunch of youtube vids and, fuck it, I want to see Eminem...

Beastie Boys at Bonnaroo would be amazing.... them jammin the fuck out... maybe do an instrumental set 1 night.... and an all hip hop set the next day or later in the night or somethin... their keyboardist Money Mark could do another solo set, like he did this year... Mixmaster Mike could do a solo DJ set... lots of possibilities....Quasar....the boys do an all hardcore set.... Country Mike....Bboys performing their country material live for the first time..... they are so diverse...i wanna see them there.

I'm all for it... but the thing is, there's a pretty limited list of hip hop acts that could do it as major headliners, a la Kanye. I think Jay-Z is probably the big one, and then obviously, Outkast would fucking destroy at Roo (much more so than Coachella methinks). That's really all I got, not including Beastie Boys, who I never really think of as hip hop... anyone else would be great, but would be subheadliners and thus probably a tent act...
And no, I would really really not like it if Eminem showed up. Maybe I would mind a little bit less if he was at Coachella instead... but seriously, even though I could easily avoid him, he would really be stinkin up the place. :(

yeah, Eminem wouldn't actually ever be at bonnaroo. that doesn't change the fact that I would like to see him at least once though.

pancakespancakes
12-06-2008, 12:31 PM
I agree actually, I have no reason for believing it but I can really feel that one. As much as I'm still holding onto the idea of Outkast making a Bonnaroo appearance this year, which would be one of the most brilliant moves this year, Beastie Boys just seem like a great fit to me. They'd be a perfect like 4th-billed act.

You guys last night's show was one of the greatest spectacles I have ever witnessed with my own two eyes. Remember, I had never heard not one Of Montreal song so I was totally green going in. Everything about it was perfect! It was just this mind blowing combination of catchy pop, crazy dance party, insane psychedelic jam outs. There were skits and costume changes and props galore. Feathers and glitter everywhere, a screen with cool images, naked boys galore. More costume changes. The crowd just ate it all up, it was just such a party. What I saw last night was a Bonnaroo late-night set waiting to happen, please trust me on this.

It'd be hard. They HATED playing coachella and Barnes told me that they didn't really want to do big festivals after that. They don't have as much control over their production and they have more time restrictions. That having been said, they went all out at Pitchfork Fest. It was definitely the weirdest show I've ever seen from them. One of the girls crowd surfed with a giant bowl full of pudding which she hand-fed to the audience, and a ninja hung really long fishing poles covered in glitter-filled balloons over the audience and hit them with darts so that they'd cover us in glitter. And they played football onstage, AND they did The Past Is A Grotesque Animal for 1/4 of their set time.
sbessiso
12-07-2008, 01:52 PM
Ah yes, but you forget Bryan that this is Bonnaroo. The Roo can give them the set times that they want/need as well as the creative control/freedom to pull of the giant production.

Why the hate for Animal Collective though? Even before I joined this board, I had a couple friends always telling me I should listen to them... but I have always ignored them. I just listened to Animal Collective's Strawberry Jam the other day, and I loved it. I can see people not liking them, but I can't imagine why you hate them so much.

I definately don't think they are the most important band of the decade haha... but I have found I quite enjoy their music. They are definately an influential band, as far as "indie" bands go. I'm sure you know what I mean. I am also sure you can see that it isn't TOO big of a stretch of the imagination to see Animal Collective at Bonnaroo.

Hey some people that occasionally wander into this thread are kinda in love with Animal Collective.... not "band of the decade" in love, but "one of the bands of the decade" in love :D. Haha but like em or not they are a perfect fit at the Roo, day or night. It's nothing to be worried over, it's not like they're that big; it's just fact. If they are indeed touring significantly in 09 I definitely can see them showing up in the That Tent.
As for Of Montreal.... you got me sbessio, that's a perfect late night tent slot. I'm actually pretty bummed I've never caught them live, I have had several chances that I blew off. I actually listened a bit to "Hissing Fauna" again today out of curiosity and it really got me rethinking them. So I'm all for their Roo '09 appearance now.

Man, I remember when you went to those Wilco shows. How many did you see? Was it as amazing as it sounds? I just love that idea of bands burning through all their songs. I've had this fantasy of Beck/The White Stripes doing it since high school. Beck I don't see happening, but the white stripes for sure.

I only went to the first night but they played 5 nights. It was so great and the fucked up thing is I saw so many great shows this year I can't even say that was the best one. It was the first one of the year and it was such a great show and very memorable though. From waiting outside to get in when it was 8 degrees outside to nice and long
over 2 hour set. I saw them next at Lollapalooza.
I would have no issues with Beck and the White Stripes. In fact that would make me quite happy. Wilco is probably my favorite band.

Telling us the Roo is trying for KISS and/or AC/DC? Posting that the top 3 Coachella headlining possibilities are Paul McCartney, Coldplay and The Killers? Who is this guy?

It sounds like we had similar experiences. We were at mainstage watching Sleater-Kinney and really enjoying ourselves, but I wasnt prepared for what happened afterwards. Tons of people left after SK and we just PUSHED to the front, I never intended or expected to get so close. I would say maybe as close as we were for Racs, perhaps. But yeah, massive :pulse for Karen O, one of the best sunset shows i've seen, and one of the best Coachella shows i've ever experienced. Me too. Somewhere somebody posted that they really want to play Coachella this year but that GV is trying to get bands that haven't played before, or something? I don't know, as far as 2006 subheadliners go, that would eliminate many that I'm hoping show up at Chella (Sigur Ros, Mogwai, Franz, YYYs, Massive Attack...).
In which case, bring them to the damn Roo! I know Franz and SR played last year, but YYYs and Massive Attack (Massive late night set FTW) would really put the Roo over the top for me.

I'm no Arcade Fire expert, but they have more or less stated that the band is on hold, touring-wise, for all of 2009. Their new album will be coming but not for a long time, they will probably be writing and recording it this year. There could be a one-off or two, but for Bonnaroo, I really don't see it. It would probably just be charity events or maybe a show in Montreal.
But MissingPerson is the resident Arcade Fire expert on this board, you're better off asking him... he could give you more accurate information.

Good Lord. I'm telling you Salah, KISS is one of my five least favorite bands of all-time. Right up there with Def Leppard and Nickelback. I'd even prefer (gasp) Primus to KISS.
Off-topic for a second... What's the deal with scoop49er or whatever? There's no chance this guy has inside information. Claiming Langerado is going after Prince? Telling us the Roo is trying for KISS and/or AC/DC? Posting that the top 3 Coachella headlining possibilities are Paul McCartney, Coldplay and The Killers? Who is this guy?
I just wanted to vent, sorry. I think you and I have as much inside info as scoop, Salah.
He does have some inside info. Remember last year he was keeping us updated on Prince playing before it happened. He has a buddy that works on the crew for Prince and he is a big Prince fan. His buddy was just told that something is happening in Florida in March, not that Prince was performing at Langerado. Prince might be setting up residency in South Beach around that time who knows. About a month before Prince was put on the lineup Scooper's buddy got the call to keep the end of April free for a california date, and that it would be big a show.

Randy was calling Led Zep too. Scoop had the info to back it up though.
I think that he mixes everything he hears together, so some real some bullshit. He seems to give us every tidbit he hears with no filter on it and let us make up our minds on it. It is very hard to seperate facts from the shit we stir up since some rumors start here on the board. If there one person here that I take seriously it is "scoop" especially after Prince.

So I just backtracked a few pages to read up on what I've been missing, and have a few thoughts to share with the BonnaCrew:
amyzzz, that lineup doesn't do much for you? Really? I'm not a diehard Bruce, Neil, Phish, Dead, or Black Crowes fan, but are you kidding me? Oh that's right, you hate Arcade Fire. And I know damn well it's because you're obsessed with lead singers' voices. Well, to each their own I suppose, but their live show at Coachella '07 was the most spiritual experience of my entire life. It made me question my prior disbelief in God.
But, and I'm no resident AF expert, I don't believe we'll see them at all this year since they're working on a new album. Thought the same thing about Silversun Pickups this year, though, and they turned up for a couple shows. Bands that loooove playing live have a tendency to pop up for a couple shows every year just for their sheer enjoyment.
Plus, that lineup has a tremendous undercard. Believe me, if the Bonnaroo lineup looks 1/4 that good, I'll be thrilled.
faxman, I like your top 10 Bonnaroo 09 hopeful list. Based on the music you listed, I'm curious, how familiar are you with Band of Horses and Fleet Foxes? I would think they'd be right up your alley.
Blink, maybe scoop has some scoop. Maybe. But I will never give him credit for anything. When you casually drop by and list every possible band that could reasonably appear at a fest, then a good percentage show up, in no way do you deserve any props, imo. And Randy had Prince, Portishead and Zeppelin for a long period of time. Pretty damn close, really.
I'm incredibly disappointed in that DVD. I expected so much more.
Salah, black fingernails for The Cure. Not even joking. And yes, I wanted to finish this monster post in the gayest possible way.
amyzzz
12-11-2008, 01:37 AM
I have also heard tons of good stuff about Rothbury. When we went to APW, our NY friend who let us stay with him WOULD NOT SHUT UP about how amazing Rothbury was. We were going on and on about Coachella and he was going on and on about Rothbury. He related how beautiful the art and decorations were and how there was this tunnel dug into the ground that you could go in...all these really amazing things going on peripheral to the music that would have made for an excellent acid trip ALONG WITH THE MUSIC. It sounded like a great time.
Yes, JSam, I am kind of obsessed with singers. That's what happens when one grows up singing in choirs all the time. :) I understand voice much more than I understand any instruments, so although I really like guitars and piano and whatever other instruments, I don't understand it as much since I don't play anything.

Not the best Bonnaroo video in the world. But, if you wait and pause it at exactly 6:03, you can see me in all my sweaty glory belting out an epic Bonnaroo cry. Black guy with the bandana, to his left there is a girl in a gray tank top with a ponytail leaning over the rail, directly behind her with my arm on the rail, that's me. I've lost 40 pounds since then, but the ample gut only provided a more righteous bellow.
