Well they play in the east far more often than the west but they'll still come out here. I've heard lots of good stories about their Red Rocks and Vegas shows.

ooh...a red rocks show would be killer.

To the topic of odd/heavy acts at Bonnaroo, what's been discussed so far? KISS, AC/DC, Manson, Zombie..?
I had a strange wizard-like premonition that it will be System of a Down. I do hope I'm right.
Backwater
12-02-2008, 07:05 PM
I would like that but I highly doubt it. If they played any fest next year it would be Coachella but they won't have that much new material ready by then so it'd be pointless. I'm gonna say 2010 Coachella headliners for SOAD.
faxman75
12-02-2008, 07:06 PM
I know very little about Phish but I dig the little I have heard. I could give two shits about a dead reunion. My Morning Jacket would be good.
I just looked at last years lineup and there is a ton I would have loved to see. They always get a shitload good music and I thought they had one of the weaker lineups compared to Coachella and Lolla, maybe even Sasquatch.
faxman75
12-02-2008, 07:06 PM
I must say those hard acts you listed....not interested. Well, Manson would be cool about midnight. The others I would pass on.

Why in God's name would you ever think such a ridiculous thing? Check out 06 and especially 07's lineups ... yeah
I could give two shits about a dead reunion.
It looks like The Dead show at Bonnaroo next year will be a party of one as far the Coachella boardies go. I seriously think I'm the only one on this entire board who's a big fan of them. Oh well, that's all your loses, not mine.
faxman75
12-02-2008, 07:17 PM
$350 rt from phoenix is about the cheapest i'm finding thus far, ouch. That's 06/10-06/15 Louisville.
sin213
12-02-2008, 07:19 PM
yeah, that is rough.
what's the word on sasquatch 09 mark?
Backwater
12-02-2008, 07:20 PM
That's 06/10-06/15 Louisville.
Yeah I think I remember Blinken saying it's cheaper to fly into Louisville than Nashville.
faxman75
12-02-2008, 07:23 PM
No word on Sasquatch 09' ...yet. I may replace it with the Roo. Might depend on lineup but it's not likely.
faxman75
12-02-2008, 07:25 PM
Lots of flights in the low $300 range for Nashville. It looks a bit cheaper.

I don't worship The Dead but I'm definitely a fan. I wouldn't think of missing that show. American Beauty is one of my favorite albums. I know I mentioned this once before, but on my first road trip to Coachella, I was driving through New Mexico at sunrise and that CD sounded almost too perfect.

Didnt know you were a phish phan! i think we're the only two on here...
i partied/saw the 3 night run at Thomas and Mack back in 04. Phish + Vegas = WIN.
My god i cant wait for them to get get their asses over here. I'll be at all the shows i can make it to.
sweet jesus.
and i saw phil and trey at vegoose '07...what a fucking shakedown that was.
Backwater
12-02-2008, 08:46 PM
Jsam, that's cool. I didn't know you were a fan. I'd be willing to bet lots of money that they'll be closing it out this year. We're just going to have to try and convince everyone else to hang around and give them a chance.
Dylan, Detox hasn't leaked yet. I'm hoping it will be out by January but I'll happy if it's even out by March. I'm being patient because we've already waited years and years so what's a few more months? I'm really excited to hear it though. The anticipation just keeps building up.
Calmer, if and when you see Phish on the lineup are you going to Bonnaroo next year?
CalmerThanYou
12-02-2008, 08:53 PM
I entered the phish lottery with 10 different peoples cards (since only a couple of my friends are into them, a lot of people didnt give a fuck) and STILL didnt get my tickets, or else i'd be flying to Hampton.
I'm contemplating attending Roo...i want to bad, just dont know if i can swing it with my other journeys/travels. me thinks they will definitely be doing a west coast tour, and that is seeming more feasible at this point.

"Backwater Tim" just has such a great ring to it. Good call, Salah.
Phish, MMJ and The Dead just have to be there.
(You gotta say it with a Southern accent for full effect :))
If SOAD is there I'm punching you in the neck. Well, I'm standing on a crate and punching you in the neck
We've got Sin and Calmer on the hook too!! Weeeee
I also tend to avoid anything and everything Dead related. But I maye make an exception for you guys

and i saw phil and trey at vegoose '07...what a fucking shakedown that was.
That was actually 06, but yeah I get years for fests (especially roos) confused all the time. Let alone Phish, I think you, Ron and I are the only big jamband fans on this board. Sbess likes them but he's not crazy about them like I am.
I did everything I could to get Hampton tickets also. No dice.
Have you seen Umphrey's lately? They just keep getting better and better. Their new shit is really heavy, like jam metal. Other jambands that I love and have seen many times throughout the years like STS9, unfortunately don't seem to improve significantly. They were always really good but they just don't seem to be getting a whole lot better. Ump on the other hand, Good God!!! It's amazing to watch them progress. They're the next Phish.
CalmerThanYou
12-02-2008, 09:16 PM
Ump is DOPE.
String Cheese is nasty.
Widespread is double nasty.
Phish is my favorite though.
(phil and trey WAS '06...jeeeeeeez.)
I'm seeing STS9 on the 17th at the Wiltern for my 26th with a big group, things are gonna be getting weird that night. Just a good ol' dance party/excuse to get down.

12-02-2008, 09:18 PM

(You gotta say it with a Southern accent for full effect :))
Haha, I do have a very strong Cincinnati accent. It's not exactly Southern but it's very distinct. You'd be amazed at the difference in accents when we're in the nati and then you drive just maybe 5 or 10 minutes tops south into Kentucky. Suddenly everyone has a 100 percent southern accent as if we're deep in Alabama or Georgia. It's like, "WTF? We were just in Cincinnati where people talk normal, what just happened?" Apparently the boardie "real talk" has the exact same accent as mine because she's also from Ohio. I've never met her but that's what I've been told.

A big group of my friends from Pasadena are going on the 16th AND 17th, they're huge STS9 fans. We should all meet up on the 17th. They're always a good time. It's great music to dance to, especially if you're tripping or rolling.

Also, Backwater Tim, I saw Umphrey's at my first Lollapalooza. Had a lot of fun. Really solid musicians.
And Iowa is similar regarding Southern accents. We all talk pretty normal (in my opinion) around here, but start driving south toward Missour-uh and it's like entering the Deep South.

They are just all excellent musicians. I've said a few times before, it's the most crisp-sounding show I've seen aside from Radiohead. That to go along with the lights and Maynard's voice. Hell, he can actually be funny on stage sometimes. I don't know why anybody wouldn't at least check out a few songs. That is a show I'd probably camp by the stage for, if there wasn't someone like Sigur Ros playing before that.

"Decent" is a pretty high compliment from me because I am very particular about singer's voices, tending toward the vocalists who sound more classically-trained. Besides, I've probably only heard about 5 Tool songs since I don't care.

there are some interesting and feasible rumors going around and I want to get the board consensus on it. as some of you may know, Superfly bought the farm last year and now owns the festival site. Earlier this year, they started trying to pimp it to other festivals/concerts/events under the name Great Stage Park. Now, here is the rumor - what if, instead of Phish having a headlining slot at Bonnaroo, which would change some of the festival's complexion through the rabid fan base and cause a much quicker sell out than usual, in the time surrounding Bonnaroo Phish holds a festival of their own, akin to their past shows, at Great Stage Park?
I'm starting to hear a lot of whispers about this...
faxman75
12-03-2008, 01:33 PM
Probably. Knowing how they do marathon shows they will probably play for 5 days leading up to the Roo.
TommyboyUNM
12-03-2008, 01:40 PM

apostle2
12-03-2008, 01:48 PM
it's actually the same for me. I would certainly check them out, but they don't need to be there, and I think they would change the make up of the festival (other acts and crowds, and Wooks) from what it has been the last few years.

We are gonna talk about it more over the next couple of days. If we do buy these presale passes, it ill mean 100% she will not be going to Coachella. Due to her exam schedule, there is a 99% chance she wont be able to go to Coachella anyways. But it would suck if on that 1% chance, she was able to go to Coachella.

So it's 4 days? Meaning 4 days of music? 4 headliners and so on?
The 1st day, Thursday, is sort of a smaller, half-day. They only play in the tents, it starts around 5 PM and does not continue well past mindnight. Typically only about 10-15 acts playing on Thursday and none of them are major by any means. Not to say there aren't any really fricking good bands either. But no, there are not as a result 4 headliners.

as of today phish is the odds on favorite to close sunday.. they are looking at ac/dc, springsteen, aerosmith, kiss, and some others as headliners.. their middle tier is always decent but the atmosphere and the setup is worth the admission regardless.. trust me, im from sacramento and made the trip to manchester just to take a chance.. best chance i took all year my friend! :)

You do know it could very easily sell out by May, right? Are you just going to go the scalped ticket route? They pretty much never sell out (I think? someone more informed should butt in) but you never know this year, particularly if Phish AND someone big like Springsteen or The Dead show up.

I'm all about the lineup, I gotta be honest. The atmosphere of Bonnaroo is really not something I am super interested in. Not that's its not cool, I love that everyone's so nice and joyful, but I honestly get that close enough at Coachella, except with way better scenery and art and visuals and whatnot... (shitty weather though...) But I really do wonder why I'm the dark horse here. Is it cause I'm not interested in drugs? What is it about me??
I guess, for one, I'm just all about the music... its why I go to festivals... and that, for me, is where Bonnaroo defeats all, and why I am confident in buying my presale ticket.

I'd be really surprised myself. But it just seems so possible considering their activity. Backwater said a while back that The Dead were even more likely than Phish, and it goes without saying we all know Phish are practically a lock. So I guess its something to be ready for.
I'm all for it though. Both are great groups I've never seen, and I would be seeing them in the best possible place. I doubt Phish will be closing Sunday, with The Dead there or not, they're definitely going to be Friday or Saturday night.

No, that's what I love. The desert scenery is what I'm all about. The foot of the mountains like that... I'm like in heaven. :) Its just for me I guess. Its part of why I go in the first place!
Bonnaroo on the other hand is pretty much a big field with really really green trees. So its not much, but its not so bad. I took a 3-day trip through Tennessee after Roo last year though, and TN is seriously a fucking beautiful state. I honestly would not mind living there, especially considering the cost of living. Its just so big and open and green.

For headliners I was realistically looking at something like Phish, The Dead, The Cure and AC/DC. I don't care about Phish and The Dead... but The Cure and AC/DC would make me stoked. Maybe NIN and Portishead too. Aerosmith would suck beyond belief.

I only know less than 10 Springsteen songs myself. Most of which from Born To Run. Its just that I hear so many glowing things about his live shows. A limited allotment of general admission tickets for the 2009 Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival will be available through a special holiday pre-sale starting on Thursday, December 4th, 2008 at 12:00 PM eastern for $209.50 plus applicable fees. After these specially priced tickets are sold out, tickets will continue to be sold at the regular 2009 festival ticket prices of $224.50, then $234.50, and finally $249.50. Tickets will only be available at each price range while supplies last; all price ranges may not be available during our regular on-sale in late January/early February.

DAMN!!!! This thread fucking Blew Up while I was gone today, so I'm going to this Tommy style with the Thoughts:
Someone said that Spiritualized is the first confirmation but I don't know who their source was.
pancakes and scooper are completely right about Springsteen. I don't like any of his albums either Josh, but like they said, it's all about the live show with him. AC/DC would be fun too but there's just no comparison. I know he's much bigger on the east coast but it doesn't matter. I paid $130 to see him in an arena and I thought it was going to be a waste of money - NOPE. That may have been the best $130 I ever spent. That guy can shred his guitar into pieces, pick up all the pieces and put them back together, and then shred it all apart into tiny little slivers again all within one song. Plus, who wouldn't want to see Max Weinburg tear up a drum solo. Just the hilarity of seeing a late night talk show character rockin on the main stage is enough right there.
If the rumor apostle was talking about (one which I haven't heard myself but am not discuonting) comes true with Phish playing a fest at the same place the week before, well then I guess I'm living in TN for two weeks.
pancakes, I get what you're saying about the scenary at coach with the mountains, palm trees and stuff and I agree that the natural scenary is much cooler than at the roo, but the art?!?! You have to be crazy if you think the art at coach is better. Maybe you just haven't seen all the cool art at roo. Most of it is actually outside of Centeroo, in the camps. There's some really impressive stuff.
The reason that The Cure is rumored is because they're one of the biggest bands in the world and they've never played there, nuff said.
There is no way in hell Phish will close out the fest on Sunday. The Dead will take that duty, and yes they are much more of a lock than Phish. You might as well just put The Dead, Spiritualized and MMJ on the confirmed list. However, when the dead closes it out I don't know what Widespread Panic is going to do. They're going to be like lost puppies, alone and confused.
Tommy I needed your help in chat last night. I was trying to convince Paul that he NEEDS to see MMJ perform for longer than 45 minutes to really get a feel for how great the band is, especially live. He didn't seem to be buying it.
Speaking of MMJ, I too would love one of those 2008 DVDs and I'll send you back a bunch of live MMJ stuff. If and when we meet up in Louisville, I'll try to meet up with some old friends who have more live MMJ footage, audio and video, than what could last you a lifetime. I'm sure they'd be willing to share with fellow MMJ fanatics, especially those who live on the otherside of the country. The KY folks are really thrilled about how popular they're finally becoming. Everyone is finally catching on to the greatness of this band.
I guess that about covers it. Oh, and zzzizzzles Tool Fucking Rocks!!! If Maynard is a decent singer then Thom is a drowning mallard.

There isn't any sort of White Stripes or Tool or Kanye type of headliner being rumored here though, as in a headliner close to their prime. I think we oughta consider the possibility of Muse...

Yeah Sam-Josn is right about Portishead. Absolutely no chance. Don't worry about scoop's headliner predictions. He's wrong about AC/DC. They won't be there. Also, why do the headliners matter so much to you? Trust us when we say that they really don't matter here. Get your presale tix so that they don't sell out and you regret it. If you end of hating the lineup (which is practically impossible so this is a huge IF) then just sell it online and if they're in high demand, you'll actually make money over it. At the very least, you'll get your money back. What do you have to lose?

Well Metallica is much more legit with the Roo crowd. At least they were in the 80's, and this new album is a return to form. They didn't improvise much or anything but their songs were long and complex. They were innovators of the genre. AC/DC is bro radio rock, more of a cheesey nostalgic act. Ahhhh that Rac's video was so wonderful :) Way to get me excited for the DVD even more!
Its funny, I was just thinking this afternoon (as I listened to them) that The Raconteurs really sum up the sound and the feel of Bonnaroo in one band. They just sort of combine all of Roo's taste in music, minus the more worldly and/or regggae acts, and I think that's a big reason why they were so many worlds better at Roo than at Coachella. (The set time being the other factor I suppose). But being that they were my first act of the weekend, at my first Roo, they really perfectly set the musical mood of the whole fest. Couldn't have had it any better.
I don't think its coincidence that they identify themselves as a Nashville-based band as a opposd a Detroit one. They just sound really really fucking good in that part of the country. I hope Jackyboy comes back in some form this year...

I realize it's an experience, and the fact that everyone in this thread (for the most part) is on board is pushing me to do the same. I just want two headliners or high subheadliners I can get thrilled about (read: The Cure, Muse, APC, Massive Attack, Chemical Bros, Underworld, David Byrne...)

Nosebleed tickets for AC/DC in Vancouver last friday were going for $1000 for a pair at the very cheapest. I have a feeling if I want to see them, a music festival will be the best bet. C'mon Bonnaroo!
Holy shit! I thought they were like 30-40 bucks for alright seats down here in LA... I was even kinda considering going to see them if they came to San Diego, which they didn't. Really loved them back in 9th grade haha.
Well then that gives them a bit more reason to play, same as Bruce. I'd never see em unless they were playing a festival.

The Cure's KINDA possible, Muse is a longshot but doable, and the Chems are pretty possible as next year's late night electronic act (not to mention would be extremely fitting, methinks...) other than that, I wouldn't plan on getting a convincing lineup this year if that's what you had in mind. I dunno though.

I don't have nitpicks, I loved it. But it was just overproduced. That's the only problem I have with it, but, it turns out that's a pretty big one. The songs and the genre experimentation were amazing though. Its just that they had constantly been improving upon themselves album after album, GBMS included... and then they just make a "really good" album. For a band like that, I might worry!
As long as they don't have 19 guitar tracks per song on the next one my guess is they'll be back in action.

300MPH Torrential Outpour is by far my favorite. So beautiful and epic. Its actually in my all-timers for the Stripes. Which is a pretty small group of songs. Although, at that show I got songs they didnt play at Roo. Hello Operator, The Union Forever (awwwwwesome!), my doorbell (on guitar; fucking WORKED man), cause & effect (with massive crowd sing-along)
By biggest complaint with that show was the fact that Jack would start a song, play a verse then move on. He did it with Little Cream Soda, Catch Hell Blues and a couple other songs I cant remember right now. But it was painful, I LOVE Little Cream Soda and CHB, but we were just teased. I do not approve of this. Union Forever was sooooooo good, same with my doorbell.

Some of those people in the "Top 30" thread can come off as pretentious, but they have pretty good taste for the most part. Give Deerhunter a shot. This list that I have on my blog is just of stuff that I found enjoyable. For example: Musically, the Beck album is better than Kings of Leon.
