I've heard he's a really nice guy. Some friends camped out at the Phoenix show to see them, and they met the entire band and got invited in for soundcheck and everything.

Ha!

I was talking about Bonnaroo with my friend last night and she wants me to dress up like a bumblebee. I told her I wasnt gunna embarrass myself for her amusement (I can see right through her). But we did work on some kind of agreement, she has to dress up too. We decided on body paint. I think.

I'd be there. But I want a lot of Mechanical Animals in the set.

Backwater
11-28-2008, 01:34 PM
So do I, and Antichrist Superstar also. Those are the two best albums. For me it goes:
Mechanical Animals
Antichrist Superstar
Portrait of an American Family
Holy Wood
The Golden Age of Grotesque
Eat me, Drink me
Smells like Children

I know maybe two Manson songs. He scared me as a kid growing up so I always avoided him but the live performances i've seen of his on TV are AWESOME. I'm down, it'll go well with the cure and NIN :)

I think all of those three are completely possible now considering who was there this year; Metallica, The Sword, Mastodon.

Yikes this kinda scared me. It would be inherintently interesting though. I honestly only know two MM songs. So I'm open to it. But my interest in his music has always been slim. What's his live show like?

Would definitely start a riot too eclipse that of JJ at Coachella though... he seems pretty AntiRoo based on my knowledge...

Great idea. I only know a few songs, but I've always been intrigued by Mansons music and personality. I've read his autobiography and watched some interviews, and he is an extremely articulate person who has a clear vision of the persona he cultivates.

That's the point. There are some interviews of him describing why he dresses the way he does, why he writes about certain themes. He is very calculating about the way he presents himself and his music.

All I've heard is Antichrist Superstar, Tainted Love, Sweet Dreams, This is Halloween, and The Beautiful People

I agree completely. He seems pretty intellectual though, so I am open to his music, as I don't really know it yet.

Which two songs do you guys know?

First KISS, then AC/DC...now Marilyn Manson? Jesus. Just when I thought you guys couldn't get any stupider, you go and come up with something like this...

And TOTALLY redeem yourselves!

I would be so down for Manson, particularly if he focused on Antichrist Superstar and Mechanical Animals material.

The other heavier act that appealed to me when I got to thinking the other day, btw, is Rob Zombie...

paulb
11-28-2008, 10:21 PM
Rob Zombie fits in anywhere... He is great live....Manson is pretty good too. Ive seen him twice, the 1st time was mediocre and he plays tons from Eat Me Drink Me...the 2nd time was tons of energy, excellent...back with Tiggy, more Antichrist material....perfect set. Ill take them.... ACDC....and EFF Kiss.

From my experience, Marilyn Manson is much better than Rob Zombie live. All four times I've seen Manson he's been really, really good. Although, I've only seen him once in the past five years or so. I guess he's lost a lot of energy with age. He was good at the Wiltern this year but that may have been a token good recent show. Rob's been hit or miss for me. He was only good once out of the three times I've seen him. I would pay top dollar to see a White Zombie reunion though, especially if they played Astro Creep in it's entirety.

I just don't want people to bring the atmosphere down, like the metallica fans did...for the most part they were ignorant minded hating every other type of music other than metallica and poked fun of others just trying to have fun...Thats at least the perspective I got from sitting in front the whole day leading up to metallica, while listening to marley and other acts before metallica later that night...

I'm a huge Santana fan, my mother's a fanatic so I've been listening to him since the womb, I got to finally see him live for the first time last September, I was completely blown away. I really didn't expect a whole lot, I thought his jamming days were over and I was going "just to say I went" kind of deals... and my god, he blew WSP right out of the water. One of the best shows of the year for sure. The rhythms are just pounded into your head with a hammer. Its so intense.

It would be sooooooo awesome at the Roo.

This to me just means it Chemical Brothers time! seriously, that's where the progression of electronic acts points - Sasha > Sasha and Digweed > Tiesto > Chems

Backwater
11-29-2008, 06:07 PM
The Grateful Dead? Phish? Heavy? I really don't know where to start on this one. Yes, I do like heavy music but I like just as much slower, softer music. My taste is all over the place. I like music in every single genre: bluegrass, death metal, folk, punk, classical, hip hop, jazz, you name it. I guess since we've been talking about Manson and Zombie in the past couple pages you just associated that with me or something. I do like a few Prodigy songs but The Chemical Brothers make much better music, more consistently too.

apostle2
11-29-2008, 06:24 PM
sorry bw, didn't mean to imply that you ONLY liked heavier music, I know you and I share some pretty eclectic tastes, it just seemed to me like given the choice between similar heavy and non heavy bands you might pick the heavier one, which is, of course, a stupid assumption...haha.

I have to say that even though the board is pretty varied as far as music tastes run, this thread is even more open. we have all pretty much accepted both marilyn manson and santana in the last 24 hours.

Backwater

Alright people. You have two days to talk me into this. I would totally take advantage of the payment plan as well. So that aside. What am I looking at cost wise for rt airfare from phx? How do I get to the site from the airport? How much spending cash is needed?

I don't care that this was all discussed elsewhere, time is of the essence and I want it all in one place and broken down for me. If i'm gonna pull the trigger on Thursday and join you freaks you better make it sound good. This will be my first roo. I'm not a festival rookie. I have been to Coachella multiple years and camped, Sasquatch and camped and the urban fest Lollapalooza where I stayed with a friend.

TommyboyUNM

- Late-night shows that can last until 6:00am

- Cheaper than Coachella (camping is included with the ticket)

- You can camp right by your car.

- Sub-headliners and smaller acts aren't relegated to 45-minute or even 1-hour sets.

- You can walk in and out of the grounds as you please (don't remember doing that at Coachella)

- Very loose security

- Likely to see MMJ (and probably for 3 hours or so)

Everyone feel free to add on. And I'm doing this and not telling him to read the thread because I like faxy.

Take it from the few people here who have been to both Bonnaroo/Coachella and other fests (Tommyboy, apostle2, sbess, Dylanja, others who I can't think of right now) Bonnaroo is hands down, without a doubt, no question the best festival in the country. I can't say world because I haven't been to Glasto or any European fests yet. You have an incredible amount of freedom there, the drugs flow freely (I don't even know if you do any, just saying.) There is much, MUCH more to do there besides the music; for example, a comedy tent with great comedians, a cinema tent with good flicks, a mircrobrew tasting and wasting tent with an impressive variety of breweries represented, ferris wheel, arcade, danceclubs, etc. You also camp right next to your car. The sets are so much longer than at Coachella or any other festival because there's no noise curfew. MMJ played for almost FOUR hours last year, WTF? The late nights are so awesome that in fact the headliners don't even matter much at all because if you don't like them then you can just get some sleep and be all pumped up and ready for the late night sets, which are always badass. The people seem much more friendly there than at any other fest I've been to. I don't know if it's just the southern hospitality or what but it's a very happy and festive atmosphere, moreso than other music fests. Not to mention the food, my God it's so delicious! I'm 100% sure you will have a great time, faxman. BONNAROO!!!!!!!!!

I'm not sure where the Nashville airport is but it's about a 30 minute drive to the roo from downtown Nashville (not counting all the roo traffic.) Supposedly there's a shuttle from the airport that non-VIP people can use this year, so that's really cool. I would bring a whole lot of cash because you'll see tons of cool things that you'll want to buy. There's a whole bunch of really awesome vendors there.

TommyboyUNM
12-02-2008, 09:40 AM
This is good....tell me more about these late night sets, who performs them and where do they take place?

The late-night sets are a variety of genres. This year's late-night sets included: Sigur Ros, MMJ, Phil Lesh & Friends, Disco Biscuits, Tiesto, Ghostland Observatory, Lupe Fiasco, Talib Kweli, *gulp* Kanye West.

They take place in the tents and on Which Stage (basically the Outdoor Stage in Coachella lingo). Kanye did his on What Stage (main) but we all know what happened there.

Are the festival grounds open 24 hours?

Yes, I believe they are. If you're an insomniac then there is a lot of exploring to do at Centeroo.

Has anyone purchased shower? How much?

No, but I hear they are widely available. That shouldn't be a problem. Honestly, there was so much going on and I was having such a good time that I didn't care about showering. Just put on some deodorant, brushed my teeth and I was on my way.

How far is the walk from the tent/car to the grounds?

It really depends on where you camp. I got lucky this year and my walk was about 5 minutes. The walk from anywhere in the camping area to the grounds shouldn't be enough to deter you from going to the Roo. That's just an opportunity to see more side shows.

Backwater

1. They take place inside Centeroo where the 8 stages/tents and everything else is. Late night sets have been played by Sigur Ros, MMJ, The Flaming Lips, Ween, Mars Volta, Galactic, Common, Sasha and Digweed, STS9, DJ Shadow, and the Superjam's are always during late night.

2. Yep, it's 24 hour free reign

3. Yeah, I've used the showers, they range from 5-15 bucks, but you don't ever feel the need to get clean there. Everyone is equally dirty and loving it.

4. It's all luck of the draw. apostle2 had some advice about when to get there to get a good spot. I think he said very early Thursday morning. I never minded the long walks though, you meet interesting people along the way.

Haha, Tommy we both keep answering. Oh well, he's getting a double dose of the info and the fact that we agree on everything about how great it is, just confirms it.

Faxman, I've been to Bonnaroo, Coachella, Lolla, Vegoose and Street Scene. I shit you not when I say Bonnaroo is the best of the fests I've been to. I'm very confident in saying that. If anybody is into music festivals, I have trouble understanding why they wouldn't wanna go to Bonnaroo. You won't regret it if you go. And you'll have some good company there.

Backwater

You find out about the late night sets the same way you find out about the day time sets, the webiste and the little guide books they give you went you get there. Here's a link to give you an idea about the schedule: http://www.bonnaroo.com/schedule/2008/06/14/stages.aspx

The late-night sets are usually announced when the lineup is released. For example, Sigur Ros and MMJ were both announced as late-night sets right away. The rest will appear on the schedule when it comes out about 3 weeks before the fest.

If you want food and beer, plan on bringing about $40-$50 per day I would say. And that's on the low end. Things aren't that expensive there and you can take food with you and eat at your camp site. But I don't know how you feel about walking in and out of Centeroo. And sometimes there are just way too many good shows to be walking back and forth.

It's not a hassle to walk in and out of Centeroo. I was just saying there will probably be some good bands playing and you might not want to walk to your tent if that's the case. The map in the guide book breaks things down very well. It's a good idea to walk around Centeroo and get to know where everything is when you get there.

This year I drove from Albuquerque with my ex-girlfriend and her sister. Then I flew back home on Monday morning to make it to work. If you wanna work something out where you fly into Indianapolis you can drive down in an RV with me, Amy and Jacob. If that's cool with Amy and Jacob of course. Or we can pick you up in Nashville. We have each other's backs so we will make the traveling part as easy as possible for everyone.

Feel free to fire away with anymore questions.

Faxman, here's a post I made earlier in the thread. I think it's pretty informative.

I remember earlier in this thread people who have never been there were asking what there is to do at Bonnaroo.

Well there's all of these stages of music:

What Stage (the mainstage)
Which Stage (equivalent to the outdoor theater)
This Tent
That Tent
The Other Tent
The Somethin' Else stage
Sonic Stage
Solar Stage

In Centeroo you'll also find:

The Comedy Theatre
Arcade Discoteque
Blue Room Cafe
Sonic Village
The Microbrew Tent
Karaoke Bay
Silent Disco
The Cinema Tent
Troo Music Lounge

... and that's all just inside Centeroo. There's plenty of other stuff going on outside of Centeroo like shakedown street (where I usually spend a good deal of time) and all of the art installations in the different camps and everything. They have so much more to offer than Coachella that it's ridiculous.

the best day i had at bonnaroo had to do with kanye west.. i couldnt believe i was watching kanye west at 5am drunk as fuck and the sun coming up! it was crazy.. but what made the trip from sacramento to bonnaroo worth it was after he was done, we went to the cinema tent and watched the maltee falcon then walked back to our camping spot and this awesome southern old school black woman gave us a hug and hooked us up with 4 breakfast burritos that were the greatest damn things ever! me and my wife still talk aout that and just smile and tell ourselves we have to go AGAIN!!.. its a great festival... everyone was sooo cool.. and we smoked in front of people .. its just laid back.... it was incredible! we are going again....;

Faxy, you don;t even have to leave your campsite. I kid you not my friend, the people come to you in waves. I got my acid and mushrooms all within the same hour and never left my chair :D

The first year I went, we greyhounded it. This year my friends and I drove. I'm still not exactly sure what we're doing for 2009, but as soon as we hit the new year i'm gunna start the planning.

Faxman, I'm giving you the Sbessiso Guarantee that you will have the best fucking time of your life. I just know it. I've never been more sure of anything. There are PLENTY of options for food, along with the usual food stands, people cook and sell their own food their food. Tons of options. We were so broke our first year (2007) but we made by wonderfully. We kinda lived off tortilla chips and gummy bears for a while. Ha! Wonderful memories. Did I ever tell you guys the story of how the gummi bears saved out lives?

What am I forgetting? Backwater Tim and Tommyboy covered all bases here

No matter how much we describe it Faxy, you're just not even gunna get the full picture until you're there. The fact that its a 24 hour thing is outstanding. They dont kick you out of CenterRoo once the music is over. The general atmosphere is so relax, the good vibes are plenty. Everyone is your friend, their stuff is your stuff. I was given free acid this year by some guys I never even met, all I did was pack a bowl and pass it around and they re payed with free acid (which was EXCELLENT and led into JackJohnson Chaos..).

Also, there are hot girls everywhere who have no problem walking around naked. ;)

$70 is quite the chunk. How did you figure that math though? I see a $50 savings. Presale is 209.50 + 23.10 + 10=242.50 Payment plan is 290.90 in five payments

1st payment. 90.90
2nd-$50
3rd-$50
4th-$50
5th-$50
Total 290.90

Is that true? I can pay 242.50 up to the end of the year? If so I will just see how Vegas goes and purchase in a couple weeks.

TommyboyUNM
12-02-2008, 12:56 PM
$70 is quite the chunk. How did you figure that math though? I see a $50 savings. Presale is 209.50 + 23.10 + 10=242.50 Payment plan is 290.90 in five payments

1st payment. 90.90
2nd-$50
3rd-$50
4th-$50
5th-$50
Total 290.90

I didn't factor in the $10 shipping cost. Fuck me.

The presale will go until 12/31 OR until supplies run out, and in my experience with Roo, supplies ALWAYS run out...haha. Especially with all the Phish rumors flying around, I see a lot of people buying early on spec.

Also, I'm always late to these parties. I have to start waking up earlier

Oh and RV passes are $125 for anybody interested in going that route. I'm still up for that Amy.
I've been putting this off with the holidays and kids and puppies all around me. I was wondering how the RV thing would work with Bonnaroo, so that solves that query.... I probably won't know anything until the end of this month because money is tight for the holidays. Also, I think Jacob might want to wait for the lineup.

I decided I'm getting mine on Thursday no matter what, because in the 3% chance that the lineup seriously does not merit making the trip back there for everything else (and we're talkin nobody but No Doubt, Killers, Dave Matthews Band, and Eric Clapton, excpet Clapton and DMB I would actually see :D) then I could just sell my ticket on ebay for the price I bought it for and it would still probably sell relatively quickly.

So in other words I have absolutely no reason not to get my ticket on Thursday.

And the benefits of doing this outside of the obvious monetary savings.... the FUCKING EXCITEMENT! BONNAROOOOOOO!

No one is getting those ridiculous VIP tix. Right???

I actually considered doing this last year sheerly for the prospect of meeting all of my favorite bands that were there. What brought me to Bonnaroo for the first time last year was the fact that out of my 20 or so favorite bands of all time, 6 were there on that lineup, so the oppurtunity to meet a large chunk of my musical heroes within a 72 hour timespan did in fact seem worth the 1,000 dollar price. Call me a crazy fanboy if you must. But alas, I just didn't have the money... I couldn't fucking care less about the seating and bathrooms and good food and whatnot though. Bleh.

Take it from the few people here who have been to both Bonnaroo/Coachella and other fests, Bonnaroo is hands down, without a doubt, no question the best festival in the country

Everyone flies to Nashville, unless there's for whatever reason a dramatically cheaper flight going to Memphis or Atlanta or Louisville or somewhere else (and we're talking like $200 savings or more.)

It took me slightly under an hour to drive from the airport to Manchester, TN last year. There was no traffic thankfully. It was like 55 minutes I think.

Bonnaroo 09 will trump Coachella 08. Yeah, Princewerkhead was cool but JJ and Roger Waters as headliners?!?! That was so weak. I say that as a huge Pink Floyd fan too. It's not even so much about the lineup as it is the festival itself and how it's ran that makes me say Bonnaroo > Coachella every year no matter what the lineups are. The biggest thing for me is the no curfew because if you don't like the headliners it's like so what? In fact it's kinda good if you don't like them so you can enjoy the late nights to their fullest. I guess I'm just a "late nighter" or something but if I'm paying all of this money to go to a festival which is basically like a vacation, the only purpose is to enjoy yourself, then I damn sure want to be able to party all night long and not be forced to leave at midnight.

will plane tix go up or down with the "recession"? and after it lets up a bit, then would prices be going for cheap to encourage travel?

Roo is dirty, but that's because of the wind. It might rain once, but it's not that bad. I had a lot of dirty in weird places when I got back from Roo.

The comedy tent has long lines from what I saw. I never ventured in there because there was too much music I wanted to see. Don't count on being in the comedy tent, I think it would be an extra treat.

Yeah, you have to wait in long lines to see comedians. They should have built the tent bigger considering the popularity of the comedians they get. Oh well, it's all about the music anyway. Chris Rock was on the mainstage this year though so that could become a regular thing.

It's all speculation at this point but tons of people think Phish are going to be there. However, MBV wasn't at Coachella this year so you never know. I'd say there's about a 90% chance they play though.
