I have a new obsession. Evidently, it's getting popular in Europe.

Chessboxing
The basic idea in chessboxing is to combine the #1 thinking sport and the #1 fighting sport into a hybrid that demands the most of its competitors both mentally and physically.

In a chessboxing fight two opponents play alternating rounds of chess and boxing. The contest starts with a round of chess, followed by a boxing round, followed by another round of chess and so on.
A contest consists of 11 rounds, 6 rounds of chess, 5 rounds of boxing. A round of chess takes 4 minutes. Each competitor has 12 minutes on the chess timer.

A round of boxing takes 3 minutes. Between the rounds there is a 1 minute pause, during which competitors change their gear. The contest is decided by: checkmate (chess round), exceeding the time limit (chess round), retirement of an opponent (chess or boxing round), KO (boxing round), or referee decision (boxing round). If the chess game ends in a stalement, the opponent with the higher score in boxing wins. If there is an equal score, the opponent with the black pieces wins.

I've only seen videos of it, but it's hilarious. Big in Germany, as far as I know, and the guys aren't weedy little office types who've picked up a pair of boxing gloves either. One guy I've seen looked quite unsettlingly like Ivan Drago.

I first heard about it the other day. The host on the local morning sports radio show was saying how he met this guy who "chessboxed" and learned all about it. The guy lives in SF and is good enough at it to get flown to Germany to compete.

I like how they have to wear hearing protection during the chess rounds so that they can't hear the commentators who might be giving away strategy with their play-by-play.

Seeing as I'm not very adept at chess, wouldn't it be the same as playing the 3 min. of chess, followed by picking up the chess board and throwing it at my opponent?

Thus the need for helmets.

I look forward to more fusion sports in future. Checkers-Jousting, for instance, or Ludo-Judo.*

No. You get to throw a left hook instead.

Just the idea of winning the board right now with only 2 threads left to post in sounds sporting enough for me.

Ludo?

*This pissed me off. I was going to say "Cluedo-Judo", which would have been awesome, except that you guys call it "Clue". So I changed it to Ludo-Judo, and was all smug about it, except I've just looked that up, and you call that Parcheesi. Fuckers.

Base 10 FTW!

I would like a Base-10 and foursquare hybrid, where the game of foursquare is adapted to be played on giant Base-10 blocks that are moved around to depict score changes by giant robot hands. We will call it Base Tensquare and nobody will be as good as me. But NOBODY.
