The best part about sking/riding in colorado is that its an hour from denver to most resorts, and there are always open couches to crash on for the weekend at the resorts themselves.

st. moritz is still the best mountain i've boarded, but whistler is a close second.

some of the lifts in whistler freaked me out. i went to the top by myself since my girl isn't very experienced at boarding. man, it was snowing HARD. i had to stop just before the top since i couldn't see anymore. they didn't have the edges of the mountain very well called out either. i thought i was going to fall off. it was badass though. the nintendo terrain park seemed dope, but i'm too afraid to try jumps or anything, i'm not quite there yet.

and i wish one of those weed smokers would have found me when i went, boo :(

the only thing that sucks about whistler is the road up. there was an accident when we went. we were stuck for like 5 hours on that road up. we had flown into seattle and rented a car to drive straight up, so we didn't have any food or anything like that. thank GOD i walked not too far and found a little general store. these british sounding people kept asking for beer and then they were like "do you have any sort of alcohol at all" and they sounded so sad when the grocer said no, lol. i also had a really nasty sinus infection and had fever nightmares in the car while we waited. and i had no video on my laptop, so we were bored to tears.

the lift:

i accidentally went down a "home run" by myself in whistler thinking it would take me to the bottom. instead i just stopped in this condo area on some pavement and had to walk an hour down the mountain by myself with no idea where i was. it's funny, cause i remember my friend ryan called me that i hadn't talked to in a long time and i was like "I'M LOST IN THE WOODS IN CANADA!" lol

and they have some pretty hopping clubs for a mountain town. we went to this place tommy africa's that was pretty cool. i had inquired with a candian friend about EDM, and we had OPTIONS! unfortunately we slept through the drum and bass night we were going to go to, but still, there was more going on there during the week than there is here in arizona on a weekend, lol. i guess all those people can afford to go out cause man, is that place pricey. i remember that anything that would be under $5 here was almost $10 there. nothing was under $5.

It's been snowing in Mammoth the past few days. My parents are thinking that it's going to be a long, cold and wet winter, so it should be a pretty awesome season. If it gets anything like 1996, I'd consider just up and moving home to be there and ski every day. When I was in high school, we'd go to the mountain 60-70 times a season. I miss those days, and those cheap lift tickets ($3 for local students.)

BADASSS!!!

i am nowhere near awesome enough for a picture like that. it sucks because i normally go with people who are even worse than i am, so i feel like i don't get all that much better when i go. i like going with people who are better than me, because i'm less afraid to take risks. that's the big problem, i'm sure i could keep going faster, but i also could break my neck, lol. maybe it's time for me to take a lesson to really polish my skills.

here's my one favourite picture, but i think i was about to stop because i was so close to the edge of the fucking cliff. this is in st. moritz, in the swiss alps:

Nevermind.

The only thing that keeps me going back to Snow Summit is that I can be home for dinner. If you stay off the main runs, it can be fun. Plus, if there's still ice on my birthday (April 13) I get to slide on it for free!

I would love to take a Mammoth trip. I pass by there every year in September on my way home from Yosemite. It's still a little early then...

i'm sure i could keep going faster, but i also could break my neck, lol. maybe it's time for me to take a lesson to really polish my skills.

The biggest problem with Mammoth is their extremely high ticket prices. I have seriously cut down on my skiing int he past two years because I haven't had a season pass.

On the plus side, Angelenos, Alaskan Airlines is going to start winter service to Mammoth. Supposed to be 90 dollars one way, and it'll getcha from LAX to the little Mammoth landing strip, which they were seriously working on this summer. It's awesome for me because now if I wanna visit my parents, I can just fly instead of drive.

chairmenmeow47
10-16-2008, 04:15 PM
i'd be down for mammoth. i only get to really go on a big trip once a year, so tickets wouldn't be a big deal to me. i also like going somewhere new every year. so far, i've done:

sunrise in arizona
purgatory/durango in colorado
flagstaff in arizona
whistler in canada
st. moritz in switzerland

how far is mammoth from la?

CalmerThanYou
10-16-2008, 04:17 PM
5-6 hours depending on speed/conditions.

The drive is the easiest drive EVER. straight shot on the 395, barely even uphill..its a trip.

bmack86
10-16-2008, 04:24 PM
Plus on any given day there are no more than 3 CHP roaming the roughly 200 miles from Mojave to Bishop, and another 2 between bishop and mammoth, so speeding is really easy. Do the drive at night and you'll get to mammoth in 4 hours no problem. The roads can get really icy though, so there's that.

CalmerThanYou
10-16-2008, 04:30 PM
yeah, but only once you pass bishop... (on the ice tip)

The drive home during the day on sunday (or whenever you leave) is amazingly beautiful.

OH: and make sure you go the speed limit in the towns, not even a mile above. they make all their revenue from speeding tickets..

Naw, I've had drives where it was solid ice from Lone Pine up. If this season makes out to be as cold as it's already looking, it'll be one of those years.

And, if any of you happen to get stopped by a short, bald CHP in a big truck, tell him you know his son Bryan. He goes to Coachella every year, so you'll have lots to talk about.

In ways it is, but I would say its different. Riding a bike doesnt really take much practice, once you know how to do it then your "good". Snowboarding takes alot of practice to go from the bunny hill to even just an intermediate run. You cant just "know" how to snowboard.

I could teach someone how to ride a bike in an hour tops, but it can take a whole weekend to get someone snowboarding.

Thats pretty funny. Customs are solid boards though. I have an old one that I've beat the shit out of over the years, it's now my early/late season rock board. My go-to is a custom Prior. It's a little board company based out of Whistler, a little heavier but a nice ride, its my winter pride and joy :^)

I ride a Burton Royale 163 with Cartel bindings now. My first board, which I still have, is a Burton Bullet 159.

I have never snow skied. I've been riding for about five years. Having some skateboarding experience, I thought it would be easy to pick up. I quickly found I was wrong. It took me about half a day to get confident enough to go to the top of the main run (blue). It was about two miles long with a few steep headwalls and some flats inbetween. The next day and a half where filled with lots of side slipping headwalls interspersed with actual riding on the flats. Once you get it, the progression goes pretty fast. By the third day, I was pretty confident and what I would consider a novice rider.

It really helps to go on extended trips where your experience can be built upon day after day as opposed to going for a a day or two at a time with long periods between.

bmack86
10-16-2008, 06:28 PM
I've been skiing since I was 3 years old, and living at mammoth ensured I skied quite a bit as a kid. I have had a few years without a solid season, plus I really fucked my ankle surfing in Hawaii a few years back and broke my hand in a High School state finals slalom race, so I'm not as good as I used to be. I can still run just about anything at Mammoth, but I'm not quite as fast and confident as I used to be.

i have a burton uninc, 158. thinking about getting a new board this year at snowjam, maybe a custom. until a couple years ago, my grandparents had a place walking distance from snow summit in big bear, so i grew up riding there, back when westridge was the sickest park ever, even before that actually. but then they moved all the jumps to bear. i almost cried when they sold that place. now i dont get to ride as much cuz renting a place is a pain in the ass. the snow in bear usually sucks, but the parks are soooo fun. as i get older though it hurts a lot worse when i fall, lol. i actually had one of the best powder days ive ever had a few years ago at summit. it was epic. ill probably hit up mammoth a couple times this year, and maybe colorado. if i can somehow get enough cash, id love to do whistler, but so fuckin expensive.

this is footage of me and my buddy from back in the day at snow summit. this was maybe 8-10 years ago when i was in college. most of it is me, and the slow part in the middle with the dude in the yellow shirt is my buddy. my other friend filmed and edited it all. i edited out a scene at the beginning and the middle that had our names, since i dont want you people knowing my full name. so if the song cuts for a second, that is why. man, this thread is getting me pumped for winter!

Mammoth has some amazing back country. If you're a really skilled rider, you should look up the trail to Hole in the Wall. You can only do it when it's been a big season, and you really have to be a talented rider to make it thru, but it's one of the coolest treks you'll ever take. You ski thru an avalanche chute worn thru the middle of a mountain, and then over a frozen lake. SO awesome.

Pretty amazing.

And a guide on how to get there:
The Hole in the wall is a narrow opening through a cliff, and this steep chute is caused by erosion and the gravitational pull on the eroded material. This is a great run, but often will avalanche and it includes ice in the lower portion.

To reach the Hole, either ski County Line or the gully beneath the "Wave" to the end of the treeless slope, and then head left (east) on a traverse toward Twin Lakes. When it seems you must head down to the lake, a small, hanging valley will rise to the left and this is the route to the Hole.

If you decide against skiing the Hole this time, follow the valley down to the lake. However, following the slightly rising, hanging valley will lead directly to the Hole in the Wall.

The easiest way into the Hole is on the left side (looking down), and the most difficult is on the far right. On either side of the Hole are also several other radical chutes, the easiest of which is the far left-hand chute. This chute is nestled against the cliffs that are the end of the Dragon's Back area of Chair 9, and is sometimes skiable from the Tail area. Once down to Twin Lakes, cross the foot-bridge to your waiting car or follow Lake Mary Road down to Chair 15. Conditions in this area change constantly, so be sure you know exactly where you are going.
Bouncing off rocky cliffs will put an immediate end to your day.

Double blacks and glades are where you'll find me on powder days. Otherwise, nose down screaming groomers or small kickers and boxes are a lot of fun.

I would most def. hit that hole in the wall!

Here's a video of our trip a couple of years ago. It's pretty shakey at times but it has some good shots.

I hate them. I figure snowboarders would like those more than skiers. They seem more attuned to tricks and whatnot. And I can't imagine those being faster than a long ski. The ones I ski (Old pair of Rossi racing Viper XX) can still fly like crazy down a good packed or groomed run, but they are horrible in powder. They're designed to float on top of the snow and cut corners really tight, so on powder I can never turn and i get caught up all the time. I skied a pair of fat skis once during a wicked blizzard, and it was amazing what a huge difference they made.

pssshhh... In the city a snowy year is one where we accumulate a few inches that stick around for a little... There is almost a fucking foot of snow out there...

There real issue is that people here panic with snow... And also that the city isn't prepared to make the roads safe... So the whole city kind of shuts down temporarily.

i've been up in mammoth since the 24th. it dumped all day on christmas, blizzard style, and was bluebird on the 26th. got some epic powder that day. its been sunny ever since though and looks like it wont snow again till next weekend. i'm probably heading back to san diego in the next couple days.

as for which days to go, the weekend will be the most crowded for sure. its only a problem at the bottom lifts tough, and even then if you go singles, its not too bad. if you stay on the top lifts, there are usually no lines.

I was there Jan 1st - Jan 4th two years ago. I didn't ski New Years Day. It was surprisingly not too crowded if I remember correctly, but still probably way more packed than average. I go to Mammoth a lot so my recollection of crowd levels is pretty blurry... but I always remember the conditions. That year had only about 3-4 foot base unfortunately. But it still managed to be a wonderful trip, with extraordinarily warm weather, which was pretty odd. I think you should be getting warm weather this weekend as well.

But yeah it shouldn't be as crowded as like President's weekend or whatever else. But it's the holidays you know, no one's in school or work, so it's definitely still one of the busier times for Mammoth.

Lots of fun, so-so snow and the crowds were nonexistent, very odd for what is supposed to be the most crowded week of the year. Skier Suffers Exposure
Man left dangling upside down, pantsless after Vail lift mishap

JANUARY 6--In a bizarre incident that will surely lead to litigation (or an out-of-court settlement), a skier at Colorado's ritzy Vail resort was left dangling upside down and pantsless from a chairlift last Friday morning. The January 2 mishap apparently occurred after the male skier and a child boarded a high-speed lift in Vail's Blue Sky Basin. It appears that the chairlift's fold-down seat was somehow not in the lowered position, which caused the man to partially fall through the resulting gap. His right ski got jammed in the ascending chairlift, and that kept him upended since his boot never dislodged from its binding. As seen in the photos on the following pages (which were snapped by fellow skiers), the Skyline Express lift was stopped shortly after the pair's botched 10:30 AM boarding resulted in the man dangling from the lift. The exposed skier was stuck for about 15 minutes before Vail personnel backed the lift up and successfully dislodged the unidentified man from the four-seat chair.

i know that boarding the lifts is a quick process, but i can't imagine sitting on a lift where the seat had not yet been lowered. wtf, i want to know more about that.

CalmerThanYou

its so snow doesnt accumulate on the chair and it stays dry for the next rider...theyre kinda hacker, normally the liftie will lower it for you.

In Colorado its usually done at night to keep the snow off the seats. I imagine he was one of the first people in line. We dont get the wet snow like tahoe.

chairmenmeow47
01-06-2009, 11:13 AM
no no no, i understand why the seat was up, i don't understand why a rider would sit on a seatless seat. i mean, i know that when you board the lift it happens really quickly, but i'd think you'd notice if there wasn't a seat. maybe that's why they are so close to the lift station; it just happened so quickly they didn't notice. either way, i'm paying a hell of a lot more attention next time i board, lol.

I guess you take certain things for granted, like when you sit on the toilet and the seat is up or the lid is down, rarely are you prepared for that.

I still would like to know how he lost his pants.

these are from mammoth on dec 26th. we hit it perfect. got up there the evening of x-mas eve, right as it was starting to dump. it then proceeded to blizzard all of xmas day, too gnarly to ride due to bad visibility and high winds, so we just hung out and enjoyed the snow. the day after xmas was the big payoff though...bluebird, and 14" fresh:

So I'm in Mammoth and I just got done today... it was a pretty great fucking week, snow was not the best, but the weather was in the mid-40s all week and nothing but sunny, and we never had to wait in a lift line for more than five minutes (that was mainly for Canyon and Stump Alley Express). Anyway, yesterday my friend and I got to the lifts ten minutes before opening, made 5th chair and were first ones to the bottom at Canyon Lodge (a personal first). Then we skiied all the way till 4, did Cornice Bowl six times in one day, it was probably the best Mammoth day I'd ever had...

Today was unfortunately not as great, wind came up pretty heavy and we never made it up to the top... it was allegedly 80 MPH up there... we skiied Tuesday as well which was pretty fun, same deal as Wednesday, but the wind was also a bitch up top that day.

Anyway, wonderful trip, I'm sad it's over, I'll post some pictures in a couple day once I get them on the computer...

X-games this weekend. The parties are always fun.

ive never tried any kind of snow skates, always wanted to though. i wonder that one differs from the other kinds, like the ones with the blade in the middle. looks like this could be a better design. more stable, just like the 4 wheels of a regular skateboard. wonder how easy it is to pop tricks...

im jealous of xgames. i remember the good ole days when they were down here at snow summit. it was only one year, but man we had a lot of fun.
