If they could let Dan Deacon play in the crowd without a hitch then I believe Lightning Bolt can do the same. They would destroy. Both figuratively and literally (in the case of my ear drums). I can only hope to be so lucky.

Funny anecdote:

My friend went to go see Sonic Youth about 3 or 4 years ago. Lightning Bolt was their opening act however showed up so late that Sonic Youth just went on without them. Lightning Bolt proceeded to walk up to their equipment that had already been set up in the front of the crowd, plug in, and drown out Sonic Youth in feedback. They were promptly addressed by security and told to leave.

Moral of the story: This EXACT scenario must happen if Coldplay were to headline.

saw them in 02 opening for the locust. tickets were like 6 or 7 bucks and LB really blew my mind.
saw them again last year in some warehouse in LA. Too many people showed up even though i assumed nobody knew what venue they were playing at. But it's safe to say that it was one of the best shows I've ever been to.
I can see them playing in the Gobi. They could play pretty much anywhere on the polo grounds that they want.

YES.
YES.
YES.

Oh my GOD I just had an incredible vision of them just fucking setting up anywhere on the polo fields... such as the big spacious region between the Gobi and the Outdoor Theatre/east food court area, or even the spaces between the Mohave/Gobi and the Sahara/Mohave. Or just out near the entrance, like in the new "lobby" or whatever the hell its called. It would have to be at like 10:30 or 11 PM though to make it right, not in the middle of the day.

Or of course they could just do a Dan Deacon set inside the Gobi. It would have to be right in the middle of the tent though.
God that would be some groundbreaking fucking Coachella performance. I am praying.

I would be down for Lightening Bolt. I havent heard much of their stuff, but I hear they are intense live.

This also reminds me... I need to start a Monotonix thread sometime soon.

Its really intense on 2 levels. the first being their music (to this day I have trouble thinking about how Bryan Gibson gets his bass to sound the way it does). The other being the presence of Bryan Chippedale on drums. The man is monster live.

They also never play on a stage either. Usually on the ground.

That is why I brought up Monotonix. They never play on the stage either. In fact, during their sets, they usually pick up their instruments and move them around. My bet is if Monotonix played the Gobi, their set would either end up in between the Gobi/Mojave or in the eating area to it's left. But I will save that for another time.

Lightning Bolt for 09! My friend was telling me the lead singer sings with a snorkle mouthpiece in his mouth. Is that true?

Oh God how I hate British people.

This is the best (2 Towers is my favorite)(the crowd is too mellow though):

The crowd's better in this one (gotta love that rafter dive!):

He wears a luchador mask with a small microphone sewn into the mouth area. That's how the muffled screaming sounds are made on record. Generally it's pumped through a distortion effect in the studio as well however I don't know about live. I don't know if you could even hear him.

its not so much a luchador mask.. its a fucked up scarf that's rapped around his head or sometimes custom beanie. they are apart of that whole rhode island music scene so it wouldn't surprise me if he knitted the damn thing himself. with this little mic he can fit in it between the mask and his mouth.

I personally believe Brian Chippendale to be the #1 most underrated drummer in rock right now. Not that he's really BETTER than Zach Hill, Jon Theodore, or Brann Dailor, (and whoever I'm missing?), but he's certainly on the same plane existence as his three contemporaries and yet he gets half the amount of attention.

Zach Hill just does everything with everybody at the same time so he gets ultra-exposure from being in every side-project ever thought up.
