View Full Version : Pumpkin Gougers II: The Triumphant Return

Hannahrain

It's that time again. You know the one. Time to spend inordinate amounts of time giving choppy, amateur cosmetic surgery to oversized harvest fruit. Time to lure small children to your dwelling with the promise of sugary treats. Time to display the most horrific consequences of accidental decapitation, ruthless slaughter, and autoerotic asphyxiation right in your front yard for all the neighbors to enjoy as though they were petunias, freshly peppered with drops of morning dew.

The point is, I'm sponsoring another pumpkin carving contest. Same rules as last year (http://www.coachella.com/forum/showthread.php?t=12235). Please refer to last year's thread for all relevant information. Prize to be determined, but, as previously, you're not really in it for the prize anyway.

Please enjoy the showcase of last year's entrants (congratulations to Alma aka TheFunkyLama, last year's winner and recipient of a fabulous pair of Groucho Marx glasses):

bmack86
10-30-2008, 11:22 AM
If I smash a pumpkin and put a salt shaker next to it, does that count?
I'll put my guitar next to it and it'll scream rock and roll.

thefunkylama
10-30-2008, 11:31 AM
you'd have to put your guitar in it, I think. Otherwise the guitar is just a witness to pumpkin murder, which is significantly less hardcore.

bmack86
10-30-2008, 11:32 AM
OOOOO. I could impale the pumpkin on the neck of my guitar. That's the winner. And then cover it all in stage blood and play death metal.

Don't forget the salt shaker.

To be perfectly honest, I think 75% of my decor was actually fabricated by me in some form or another. No macaroni noodles though. The bamboo tray on the wall was damaged in one corner so I fixed it with seashells and painted it instead of throwing it out. Same thing with the big wooden spool. I gave them both another life. The toy cars? Hmm, some people collect stuffed animals, dolls, or stamps...I collect Ferrari Cars. (Atleast those that I can afford, anyway...) Now, where were we? Ahhh, Pumpkin Gouging! The bleach water soak works. Be sure to bring them in at night and cover them with a wet towel to get a few more days out of them. If they start to shrivel, soak them again.

Last year I did the soak and cover method and got a little over two weeks out of mine.

Dried out? From what? Are you supposed to wash out the inside of the damn thing after removing the seeds? Christ, that might explain why mine began foaming at the mouth by wednesday! Sarcasm? I know what it's supposed to be, but the ears and the eyes reminded of said bear.

I carved a pumpkin in like 2008 but I put it in the wrong thread. It was supposed to be a cat but nobody thought it looked like one.

Not hard to do since it seems every store I've walked into lately already has Christmas shit up. WTF?

Hm, then you could leave some of the stringy pulp and seeds in it to splew out of your boner.

Courtney, you have inspired me to get a pumpkin or two. My kids have been begging me for weeks.

edit: we already have our butternut ghost squashes outside, but I guess we could add some carved pumpkins too.

You won't buy your kids a couple of pumpkins for Halloween unless you get inspired by a message board picture?

Carving pumpkins is hard for me. And I've been extremely busy and very low energy and generally not in the best of moods for several months. However, I feel pretty good this week, and Courtney's post inspired me.

If you didn't read it already, I already made butternut squashes into little ghosts with my kids 2 weeks ago as a homemade, front-door decoration. The pumpkins would be even more decoration.

Clearly it's not hard for you. Yay for you.

I know how you feel, Z. I can't cut into a November squash without worrying that my readiness to sever orange starchy plantmeat without a second glance is somehow representative of my indifference toward my father. This is an emotionally difficult time of year.

I meant that I'm not an artist. And I don't have sharp knives. My pumpkins turn out looking really basic. That sort of thing.

That's a good reason to deny your children Halloween traditions. Personal shame at your own shortcomings.

Clearly you can hear the Great Pumpkin intro music without waking up a week later cradling a bottle of rubbing alcohol in a fugue state. Yay for you.

God damn rotary telephone keyboard. Just what I need at this vulnerable time - poor comedic pacing.

A guy just walked by me carrying a US Census Bureau briefcase but his leg was in front of part of it and I thought it said Uterus Bureau.
