MATT JOHNSON is a genius are there any fans on the board?

Burning Blue Soul & Soul Mining are some of my top favorite records!

Mind Bomb was released when I was a junior in high school, and I was immediately hooked. I think I was first tempted to listen when I heard that Johnny Marr was the guitarist at that point, but Matt Johnson definitely has a singular vision. Absolutely underrated.

I got to meet and hang with Matt Johnson & Johnny Marr when they toured Mind Bomb. Long story short I did not have a ticket and the show at the Roxy was sold out. So I went down there by myself around 2pm to try to find a ticket but couldn't.. after talking to the stage manager next thing I knew we where smoking a joint driving to go get all the booze for the rider. Then they sent me around town as a runner to pick up food etc. for the band. I got a backstage pass handed to me for that and got to watch the sound check drink and eat with Matt & Johnny. It was incredible!

Isn't it illegal to talk about The The without mentioning this gem?

Mind Bomb is another example of Matt Johnson genius I mean just listen to the lyrics to "Armageddon Days Are Here(again)" and you realize he was on to something years ago! Fuck I'm blasting it right now!!

I have (on VHS) the collection of videos that went with this album. I thought it was really trippy when I watched it at age 17. I should watch it again to see how it holds up.

lol. one could be hung for that alone. "Infected" is one of my favorites period. I know every word and note to that record seriously! so many great tunes... Heartland to Sweet Bird Of Truth! Out Of The Blue with Neneh Cherry! amazing. I love the Infected video/doc as well. I hope Matt Johnson does a record soon.

I remember staying up late to record it off of Night-Flight before it got released. I have the VHS too and recently got a dvd bootleg with extra stuff but yes I think it hold up pretty well...

The The would be an absolutely brilliant reunion (of sorts, since there was never really one lineup) and it is about time the whole catalog got reassessed and introduced to the children (who are our future)

DO THIS, PAUL!

The only conceivable reason one could not have for liking The The is maybe....maybe that they got molested by their uncle.
But thats still a pretty flimsy excuse.

How did I not see this thread until today? A CRIME.

A cliched pick on my part, but I still fucking adore this song and the video, and it's amazing how pertinent a 25 year old song still is. The whole album actually is pretty awesome.

I found it by searching "Matt Johnson"

Found a vinyl copy of Mind Bomb a couple weeks ago. I was reminded again how much I love the drum sound on this record. Sounds like it could've been recorded in my living room.

Also, has anyone heard/seen anything about this?

Johnson didn't want to become famous or very popular, he's allegedly a really strange sort of reclusive guy.

Don't make any more music and your star fades. :(

I met him when they played here in 2000.
Incredibly nice guy (and really short, which seems to be the case with every single famous person I meet)
He was bummed about how he was getting treated by Universal.
Sucks.
At the time, Trent Reznor had tried to get him some label respect and a real push, but it just didnt amount to much.
Remember that this was in that dread period 1998-2002, when the entire music business was focused on knuckle-dragging 14-year old date rapists and their dipshit little sisters.

An absolute fucking shame too because Nakedself was a goddamn masterpiece.

Nice to see this thread get some love!

Other then soundtrack/instrumental pieces it seems Matt may have lost his passion for making records. And I haven't been getting the monthly "Radio Cineola" emails either but I would think he still has a trick or two up his sleeve!

Yeah, Universal/Interscope fucked Matt with NakedSelf. Gave him zero promotion money and no tour support. He lost his shirt on that album. He'd signed with Nothing not realizing it was nothing more than a vanity label. Trent's hands are not clean with that one. Shame on him.

The The is parked, but not dissolved. Matt's had a real spate of writer's block, and I'm sure more material will come if inspiration hits. I know around the time of NakedSelf he felt like musically he was going in circles and was feeling like he was in danger of becoming a bad bar band.

He's since stated on several occasions that there *will* be a The The tour of some sort in the future. I just think he's just waiting for an offer he can't refuse.
