He's not suggesting they'd headline, he's suggesting they'd plkay after Gorillaz, sorta like how Tiesto played after RHCP in 2007, and Black Star played after NIN in 2005.

I say they'd make an awesome Friday night headliner.

as long as i get a set of gorillaz they could have jupiter rings spot and i wouldnt give a rats ass.

But arcade fire is? Self-titled and Demon Days were massive commercial successes, especially the latter. Wasnt Clint Eastwood and Feel Good Inc. number one at some point? That and the fact that they only played a handful of shows tells me they have the headline potential

Sushov23
10-11-2008, 01:57 PM
Arcade Fire is going to be headliner material by album 3 or 4. not right now. Read what I've written about them. Gorillaz are in that same bubble as Muse, Arcade Fire where they are big, really big, but not quite there to headliner. Although I would like it if either of the 3 would play coachella.

Yeah Gorillaz easily have headlining priority over fucking Arcade Fire. Gorillaz and Muse would be closer, but Gorillaz probably have more mass appeal. So here's how it works:

Gorillaz > Muse > Arcade Fire (just based on headlining potential)

Oh, Dub Pistols would be nice. Also, The Prodigy do love The Specials, they have covered Ghost Town a couple times before. Perhaps Terry Hall could come onstage and sing Ghost Town with The Prodigy. I would go nuts.
Also, I will start another rumour. There will be a 2tone outdoor theatre consisting of Madness and the Specials. Also, since the Prodigy will be there, they will do their cover of Madness' Nightboat to Cairo. So it only makes sense the lead singer of Madness (I forget his name) will join the Prodigy onstage too.

Beg to differ my friend...... its all about target audience, and fanbase passion, really.

Hence why Bjork can easily headline, and Gorillaz are iffy.

Here's how it break down:
Most people who could name at least TWO Bjork songs could name twenty more.
Most (and I mean most) people who could name a Gorillaz song could only name two. No more than two.

so next year the headliners are boards of canada, gogol bordello, and morrissey. this makes sense in the specific examples used, but not much outside of that. what determines a headliner more than anything else is how much they charge to play live...

The Cure is massive, indietron. The will never have anyone headline over them. Except maybe Bowie. Alchemy
10-12-2008, 03:59 PM
Gorillaz has sold more albums than Arcade Fire though, which is my point, and they have more appeal to the pop-music masses. I mean, they have an MTV Crib thing and played the Grammy's with Madonna, didn't they? Doesn't that give a band some headliner points? Even if Gorillaz would be one of the "lesser" headliners, but come on, they'd be fun to watch. I think Gorillaz can definitely grab a Friday headliner spot, also because Gorillaz don't play many shows, do they? That, and Goldenvoice could have them do all their cool stage stuff, like in the Gorillaz DVD, which I'd think is a pretty good headliner set-up. Not to mention all the guests they could invite for their set. A Gorillaz set has a lot of potential to be really awesome.

I do agree though, that Arcade Fire could probably headline on their fourth album, I'm not sure about a third album, because there are still greater headliner opportunities for Coachella to grab (better than Gorillaz for that matter, but they seem very likely for releasing an album in March). Since Arcade Fire has a sort of special place in Coachella's heart though, I bet the fourth album might get them a spot... Assuming they don't break up or anything.

But this is a Gorillaz thread, not an Arcade Fire or Muse thread. I hope a Gorillaz headline on Friday also means an MF Doom set earlier in the day. Also, maybe 3-D will collaborate with Damon Albarn on Gorillaz, the way Damon Albarn is collaborating on Massive Attack for a song? And the new Massive Attack might be out next year around the same time? Maybe? Gorillaz might be one of the weaker headliners, sans Jack Johnson, but a Massive Attack and Gorillaz headlining (on Friday, of course) might not be so "weak".

Oh! And if Massive Attack are there too, they should Fantomas, or any other Mike Patton project, to be there too. That was Mike Patton could join Massive Attack on stage as well as Damon Albarn.
I like how this is turning out.

Arcade Fire can't headline either from a press standpoint, although the quality of their show is hard to talk smack at. Gorillaz was at least on the radio and MTV and shit, so yeah, they'd definitely be more qualified. Most people have still never heard of Arcade Fire--sad but true.

You guys are all overlooking the fact that both Arcade Fire and Gorillaz would look a little silly alongside the inevitable Daft Punk and Zeppelin Saturday and Sunday headliners, respectively. Haven't I explained this?

I think Coachella should do all they can to get Massive Attack and Gorillaz there. With all this Oasis and The Cure stuff going on in the Music Lounge, I'm starting to smell a tasty Coachella 09.

Friday: Gorillaz & Massive Attack
Saturday: The Cure
Sunday: Oasis

I can dig that.

Oasis on Sunday = Fail. Oasis would be Friday headliners, MAYBE Saturday.

Also Randy, I actually think Gorillaz would fit in quite nicely with Daft Punk and Led Zeppelin. Actually, I would argue Led Zeppelin would be the act that looks funny.

the white stripes are playing friday, gorillaz is saturday and Bowie is sunday. If Bowie declines (declined?), well then, put whatever you there

Well personally, I'm still hoping that Goldenvoice does something about this where-are-the-Talkings-Heads-?-this-isn't-Talking-Heads-,-this-is-Jack-Johnson-,-man-,-that's-not-even-close incident we experienced last year, and I'd prefer that for Sunday... But I still want to see Oasis.

I'm warning you all in advance--you're going to see at least one if not two more throwback headliners this year too. Roger Waters will not have been a solitary incident. They're trying to push the festival in a somewhat more family friendly direction, and that involves having some old bastard Superbowl Halftime Show acts. Frankly I just go with Zeppelin because (a) I refuse to believe that that premonition I had last year on acid could really be so off and (b) if there's gonna be some classic rock bullshit I'd at least like it to be something I never had a chance to see before and probably will never again. And Kashmir would be fucking sick.

But Bowie would be a delightful alternative. Daft, Bowie, Zep?

And actually Rage, you're right--Gorillaz would fit in that mix perfectly fine, especially if they did something really gnarly with their cartoon personas for the visual aspect of the show. I never actually said I don't support them headlining, just that it WOULD be an unprecedentedly small number of album sales for a headliner.

I think it's Radiohead - Daft - Gorillaz - Bowie. I really do.

But maybe it's just because I REALLY hope there's no Zep...

Well Randy, considering you know people who work for GV, I definately do not doubt you here. However, I really doubt they would get Bowie AND Zeppelin. I could see this

Friday: Gorillaz and/or Daft Punk
Saturday: Radiohead or Pearl Jam
Sunday: Led Zeppelin or Bowie

Just as long as the throwback act isn't Tom Petty. And what exactly do you mean "more family friendly"? Like, just get a couple older acts to attract parents of the hip kids who know about Coachella... or changing the atmosphere of Coachella to a family friendly event?

Daft

Friday: Daft Punk

What if Daft Punk have a new album out by then Omar. Would that be acceptable to you? To be honest, I wouldn't want Daft Punk there unless they have a new album out.

JSam67

I've seen Daft, they're not on my wishlist. That would be Talking Heads. But I really do believe Daft will be there, new album or not. Sort of a GV paying homage to Radiohead and Daft on Coachella's 10 yr anniversary for their 04 and 06 Chella performances, respectively.

And seriously, I don't think I'd associate with someone who really didn't want to watch that show, even if it is the 2nd+ time seeing them.

FUCK. To see the Gorillaz play at night on the main stage would change my life forever.

Gorillaz didn't just change my life forever, spoiled it as well (nothing will ever compare).... I saw the show in NY back in '01 or '02. If they performed in the same style as these shows, I think it would have the same affect on everyone.

Hey it's late March.

Here's an update, at least. There's a documentary in the works about them making their new album.

But arcade fire is? Self-titled and Demon Days were massive commercial successes, especially the latter. Wasnt Clint Eastwood and Feel Good Inc. number one at some point? That and the fact that they only played a handful of shows tells me they have the headline potential

and not to rain on the SB's love parade, but yeah, if THE KILLERS can headline
coachella, GORILLAZ would basically get to play a three-day set. fuck off world.
