View Full Version : Acts that Make Sense - 2009

So this is by no means any sort of definitive list, but there is often a formula for bands who play Coachella. Most are either new or upcoming buzz bands or are touring for new albums. Also, I'm going to eliminate any band who played last year, even though some bands have played consecutive years Feel free to add to this list, but here's my list (so far) of some bands who we could possibly see at Coachella 2009.

Wishful Thinking (the bands/reunions we hope for every year)
Talking Heads
Pulp
David Bowie
The Smiths
Pavement
The Knife
Boards of Canada
(anyone else go in here?)

Bigger Acts
Coldplay (touring for new album)
Oasis (new album out today)
The Killers (new album out in November)
Kanye West (new album out in December)
Jay Z (new album rumored in December)
Morrissey (new album out in early 2009)
No Doubt (rumored album out in 2009, SoCal band)
Muse (new album rumored for early 2009)
David Byrne (touring for new album now)

Others
The Streets (new album out today, were scheduled to play last year)
Andrew Bird (new album out in January)
Massive Attack (new album scheduled for 2009)
A.C. Newman (new album out in January)
Los Campesinos (new album out in November)
Deerhunter (new album out in November)
Bloc Party (new album out now)
Deerhoof (new album out now)
TV on the Radio (new album out now)
Fleet Foxes (huge buzz band)
Final Fantasy (new album out in early 2009)
Hercules & Love Affair (this makes total sense)
Airborne Toxic Event (the kids love 'em)
Blitzen Trapper (new album out now)
CSS (new album out now, festival whores)
Dr. Dog
The Faint
Glasvegas
Fujiya & Miyagi
Fiery Furnaces
The Hold Steady
Kings of Leon
Lykke Li
Mercury Rev
Mogwai
Okkervil River
Shearwater
Oxford Collapse
Stereolab
The Stills
The Walkmen
Wire
The Wedding Present

I should also note that Snow Patrol, Keane and The Kaiser Chiefs all have albums coming out this fall.

I might add:
SMD (played last year, but have a new album ready for the new year, and I can't think of any others for the repeat category)
Of Montreal (new album, no brainer)
Dandy Warhols (new album is very good, still put on a killer live show)
Presets (relatively new album, never played before)
Crystal Castles (buzz)
Dept of Eagles (another buzz)
Brazilian Girls (new album)
Thievery Corporation (new album)
M83 (excellent new album)
Soulwax (touring now)

starrdogg
10-06-2008, 02:50 PM
Ah yes, meant to include both Of Montreal and Antony and the Johnsons on my list. Also, The Prodigy seems almost like a shoe-in to play, what with the new album and them basically saying that when they said they'd play in 2008 they really meant 2009.

Boourns
10-06-2008, 02:52 PM
Asobi Seksu (new album in February, 4 years overdue)
Radiohead (allegedly touring South America a few weeks before, Coachella moved to middle of month)

And yeah, after that myspace drama this year, I'd bet money on the Prodigy being there.

other buzzy type bands:

Chairlift
HEALTH
No Age
Abe Vigoda
El Guincho
Vivian Girls
High Places

I definately agree with Crystal Castles being there. That's a shoo in this year.

Conor Oberst is also a probable, with the new album and such. I would say the same for Ratatat. Would they ask AC back with their new album and super huge reception at Pitchfork and APW?

If Oasis or the Killers show up, I'll set shit on fire in an angry rage. But Pavement would seriously make my year.

Also, I am pretty damn confident either Madness or The Specials will be there next year. I have a feeling it will be The Specials... but either would make me insanely happy. Both would put me over the moon.

SONIC YOUTH ON MATADOR RECORDS

From Matador Records:

"After rampant speculation, Matador Records can confirm the label will be releasing a new studio album from Sonic Youth sometime in 2009. Having fulfilled their contractual obligations to the Universal Music Group, Sonic Youth recently reached an agreement with Matador to release the band's 16th album of new material in all worldwide territories, save for Japan.

While Sonic Youth's status as one of the more innovative and influential bands of the past 30 years needs little explanation, the group's most recent recordings for Geffen --- 2006's 'Rather Ripped' being their final for the label --- rank amongst the current decade's best. For Matador, the opportunity to work in partnership with a group who've made such an profound impact on our roster/hometown/collective consciousness was one to jump at. Kim Gordon, Thurston Moore, Lee Ranaldo and Steve Shelley will commence recording the new Sonic Youth LP/CD this autumn and we look forward to sharing further details in the very near future."

Yes. They were a highlight for me that Friday night. A couple of my friends were still acclimating to the desert heat, and hung back while two of us saw Sonic Youth (I wouldn't have missed it... and they did not disappoint!).

I don't see someone as sloppy seconds or thirds if they are worth watching. The only time repeats suck is if the band itself sucks.

Just to play Devils Advocate, couldn't My Morning Jacket be considered sloppy seconds for Coachella since they were playing Bonnaroo to start their careers?

Updates at High Road Touring. Sadly, Portishead is now just TBA instead of available to headline in 2009. Feist is unavailable from Jan-June, and tons of acts are available from January-April.

Patti Smith would be great subheadliner, or maybe a late night set on the Outdoor
