I'm so excited now -- I've been to Big Sur a hundred times before and I've never been to Humboldt. This is going to be really great. I got 4 friends going to this show now, and hopefully more soon.

Arcata was sold out when I looked this morning... so I'm thinking the Redway will be sold out extremely soon.

So I sent this tweet out a while ago...

11 hour drive the tuesday before Coachella to Redway for Animal Collective? Anybody willing to switch off driving? #imcrazyenoughtodothis
And one of my friends responded with

I'm down. Not like I'm doing anything else that week. LOL.
He didn't get a Coachella ticket in time. Tried getting ahold of him to see if he was serious, but I think he is at work now. So I just said fuck it and bought two tickets. I'll be there. Makes me not care as much about missing the other two.

Do people buy Arcata tickets because they've never heard of Redway? Redway appears much closer to SF. Or are there actual people living up there that might've gotten those tickets?

I just got four Redway tickets, not really knowing who would go. I just found out about this mini-tour today and didn't want to miss out because of ignorance.

You're closer to Oregon than you are to San Francisco by the time you get there. Should be a fun drive.

I mean, a lot of people live in the Arcata region. And it takes place at Humboldt State, I bet half the people going are students. Redway is a state park town of of like 1,000 people.

Merriweather Post Pavilion was simultaneously the best and worst thing to happen to music in the past decade.

By worst, I mean that it seems to be the go-to album for new bands to shamelessly borrow from. Look at Yeasayer's Odd Blood or Delorean's Subiza for recent clear-as-day examples. And I have a feeling we haven't even seen the bulk of it yet.

And by best, I mean that if there is an album that's a template for future bands to draw inspiration from, at least it's something like MPP. It could be a heck of a lot worse.

I recently got Sirius for free in my car for the next few months, and I was thinking something along the same lines while listening to one of the channels (26?). I can't remember the names of the a lot of the bands, but it was probably about 4-5 songs that were pretty much what you described. It wasn't exactly cloaked either, it was pretty blatant.

Fans -

New personnel change: Dave Pajo is tagging out, folks.

Dave has decided to step out of the spotlight for a spell, and will no longer be touring with Interpol.
We’re all friends. It’s just an Out-of-the-hotel, Into-the-home sorta thing.

He’s going to be missed to be sure. Aside from being an exceptional musician, Pajo is a wonderful person to be around.
He’s sharp as a tack and funny as all get-out.

Anyway, if you saw us perform recently, I’m sure you’ll agree - we were lucky to have him.

Dave wanted to speak to you personally, so please see below for a note from the man himself.

And now for the good news:

We have tapped our friend Brad Truax* to perform bass duties effective immediately.

Brad is the man. His musical resume includes work with a horde of awesome bands: Home, Soldiers of Fortune, Gang Gang Dance, The Broke Revue, Animal Collective, Cass McCombs, White Magic…
He’s got taste and he’s got chops. And that’s what we want.

Our next gig, and our first with Truax, will be in Hamburg on March 3rd. So hop on over to Germany and come down say hi.

We look forward to seeing every last one of you in the coming months.

Thanks.

- Interpol

Good luck, Brad! (I'm really stoked for him.)

The Vashti Bunyan collaboration is ESSENTIAL. Spirt They're Gone is must have. The People EP is great. I love Danse Manatee but most people seem to take Pitchfork's cue on that one... And if you don't like hollindagain, that's not likely to be your kind of thing.

The listening party was a bit dodgy. They had sound problems - the speakers in one of the two rooms kept cutting out - and a lot people were socializing loudly as they played the album.

I recall really liking Alsatian Darn but not being too excited by the rest. Need to give it a real chance before I make any judgement, though.

Enlighten me with the circumstances. How does you making it known that you were aware of a show before it was made "public" support AC fans?

That post itself isn't extremely supredouchey. It's not as if he is blatantly rubbing it in our faces that he knew about it far before we did -- I think he actually briefly tipped this thread off to the possibility/reality of that show happening.

GeezrRckr
03-08-2011, 12:14 PM
Actually, I did not this time because I was asked to keep it on the DL so they could work it out with the venue. There is more to it than just adding a date in Petaluma, but now I'm venturing into douche realm again, eh.

The bottom line is that I am excited about how well things are going for my friends and this is a fun place to revel in that (especially since our mutual friends are rather ambivalent...not only about AC, but about music in general). Take it for what it's worth, but it's a weird situation for me on multiple levels. I've often pondered the consequences of posting personal stuff here. It's time I stop. Thanks for the reality check.

In conjunction with their experiments with music, I've come to realize how much Panda Bear likes to make everything symmetrical or as close to symmetrical as possible. Experimentation.

It's most prevalent in Person Pitch (with the orientation of track lengths), but also in several songs from before:
"Derek" has the heavy drums come in right at the half-way mark (1:30)
"Winter's Love"'s first half is just strumming and humming, and the latter half is actual verses.
"Chores" and "Daily Routine" kind of go into a dense abyss of sound in their second halves.

That being said, Dave Portner writes the best songs.

i would also like to point out that a song's changing at the midway point does not make it symmetrical... just sayin'...

03-11-2011, 08:45 PM
It's an epic bender. And, with ACs ties to the Dead....entirely appropriate. I just hope they end up making a poster to commemorate this historic run.

EDIT: and who knows..you may end up getting the most variance in unique songs as a result (old stuff, I mean). For sure, you'll be part of a very unique experience to sit in on a band's creative process. That's really sweet.

Being able to see their very first show (Petaluma) makes me so happy. That show coming around was some really good fortune. Not only to be the first to hear the new jams, but I'm also jacked to see all of them together again. It's been so long.

GoodGirlGalaxy
03-11-2011, 09:38 PM

No, I totally get that. I've read an interview with Noah (will find soon) where he points out his efforts in making Person Pitch a very "symmetrical" album, with the album artwork and the album itself. And due to that statement, I started digging up his older stuff with AC to see if that sort of experimentation occurred. I think "Derek" is the closest to that symmetry considering he wrote that song with AC around the time he created Person Pitch.

http://www.montereycountyweekly.com/weblogs/music-blog/2011/mar/18/new-stage-at-henry-miller-unscathed-by-highway-1-c/

Most of you are probably already aware that a chunk of Highway 1 collapsed into the ocean the other day. As the road crumbled, the new stage at Henry Miller Library continued its journey towards completion.

We're all looking forward to seeing this season's monster lineup break in the newly crafted collection of lumber, beginning with its debut on April 14 with Animal Collective.

On another note, the library is also trying to raise a little dough via Kickstarter and want folks to be aware that they are a non-profit, so it's tax deductible and generous givers will get some nice goodies. The goal is $6,250 and more than $4,000 has already been gifted. It's not that much to ask to continue having the opportunity to see bands like Arcade Fire in such an intimate and sublime setting.

in case you're wondering, if you're traveling from the north, it will take you an extra hour and 45 minutes each way to make the trip on 101-S the whole way and cut around a curvy mountain road.

I think that they are saying 3 hours because there will be slower traffic than usual getting in after traveling down 101 S.

For as early as you'd have to leave to make it there on time, you'd likely miss most of the SF traffic and probably most of the San Jose traffic.

No clue how much more traffic the mountain roads will be getting, but I can't imagine that it'll be an extra 75 minutes worth of congestion.

It’s official: Animal Collective have designed a collection of sneakers for Keep. The first they’re revealing is Avey Tare’s “Avey Tare Ghost Tobin.” The next three will pop up over the next three weeks: Three adult styles, one for kids. Per usual with Keep, the shoes will be canvas based/”cruelty free.” Following that line of thought, all profits go to the Socorro Island Conservation Fund, “a non-profit working to preserve the unique biosphere of the Revillagigedo Archipelago off Baja California, where illegal fishing, in particular of its shark population, is a continual threat.” Read Geologist and Deakin’s thoughts about the charity and the ocean while you take a closer look at Avey Tare’s kicks.

It's funny that you ask since I just *now* got a care package from Keep.

Although I did not get any of the AC shoes, it did include a pair of the Dorians. I can tell you that they run true-to-size and are very nicely constructed (especially the stitching). My only "complaint" about them is that there is really no support in the soles (not uncommon with skate shoes). I will need to put in an insert of some sort. But, I will attest to the fact that Keep makes a well-constructed shoe.

Soooo.... what the fuck?

I can't stand the collected animals board. I never know what the hell they are talking about. Tonight was their first new show. Anyone have a setlist? Any type of specific info? at all?

I'm sure there's gonna be bootlegs etc.. but its 12:30 am and I'd REALLY love to know what they played

ok.. deep breaths.

from someone at collected animals:

animal collective's set up is dope, avey goes between a sequencer and what looks like a kaossilator (or some other crazy x-y touch pad thing) and a keyboard going through some crazy effects. his voice was flanged and nuts most of the night. panda's got a weird drum module that looks like a video projector and this sweet gourd shaker instead of a hi hat. he just drummed and sang all night. deakin was playing one of those virtual drumpad things, samples and guitar. and geo just did that headlamp thing.

the missing sample from the tubby jam got reworked into a crazy avey tare jam. i think a lot of you guys are going to HATE their new sound, but it was a really amazing experience. soooo many textures and layers and abrasive loops and effects. mindblowing

old songs were:
did you see the words
brothersport
we tigers (ooooh shit yes! this was great)
summertime clothes

cutterbutter
04-10-2011, 11:29 PM

secondly, I'm dying to know if it was totally reworked, or if it was played straight, or what?

Are any of you fuckers still awake? Just got back from Petaluma. 10 new jams + 4 old ones. Tigers and Summertime were reworked really nice. The new song before Brothersport is very groovy and, I'm going to say it...may become a bigger hit than My Girls (I fucking loved it and was dancing my ass off). No real names for the new stuff yet...just names of friends or some shit like that. I can't remember what Noah said now.

There's a lot of new things being tried out for the first time (beyond the songs, that is) so tonite's set was pretty solid all things considered. Noah playing the kit the whole time was a nice surprise..he's quite good. But, having Josh sing the opening song was very special.

In general, and this isn't directed at GoodGirlGalaxy, people just in general don't know when to give things up. They overdo shit, drive it into the ground, without having any kind of sense of when it's gone overboard.

"Swak Swak" -Ray J

EDIT: That's Ray J's version of "bi-winning" and that one hasn't gotten old.

i loved it. but then again, i'm a total sucker for the 70s psych cum dub thing they are doing.
Most of my aversion was due to the horrible mixing and sound in Petaluma. Does Sun Araw always sound like Bollywood vocals? Because that's what the speakers were fuzzily throwing my way.

the mix was bad I agree... but yeah, kind of:

by the way, Drew or anyone else that knows, the visuals in Petaluma (and presumably the rest of the tour sans Coachella) weren't done by Danny Perez, right? They kinda had Avey's sister's look to them at points.

Right, not Danny (you would KNOW if it was him). They were done by the guys in Black Dice. And, expect them to be in a higher resolution at better venues....for sure at Coachella.

i think eric copeland (from black dice) is the one actually "performing" the visuals. he was at the show on sunday.

So glad I got to see two of those shows. Definitely enjoyed last night more, despite dealing with a few idiots in the crowd. They will sound even better come saturday.

Matt, it was awesome to enjoy the show with you. Jared, sorry I missed you, but I have no clue what you look like. You going to Coachella? You should stop by our camp if so, it'll be easy to find. Let you know how if you're going.

were there any changes in the setlist for arcata or redway?

From what I saw on Collected Animals, not really.

Just realized they get 70 min at Coachella. Amazing. But is 25 minutes really enough time to break down their amount of gear, to set up for another band with an insane amount of gear?

dorkfish

the AF stage will probably be setup already. No chance it takes 25 minutes to turnover, though.

GoodGirlGalaxy

With 70 minutes, they'll only have to cut two or three songs from their set list. Win!

Also, it was mostly AC and some lackies doing the removal of gear at Petaluma and it took them an hour. I'm sure Coachella has lackies of their own to help lug stuff off stage.

BTW, which one of you is Jared?

Lots of lackies....no self-imposed slave work that night.

All that shit will be on rollers....shouldn't take too long. But, who fucking cares...both bands will get their full sets in.

i didn't make it out there :( had too much work to grapple with. i won't be at coachella either unfortunately, but i'm sure our paths will cross eventually.

Yes! You too. To elaborate on what I said above, I loved this show. It's one thing to see a band play songs you know, it's another to see them doing stuff you've never heard and the inherent risk in that, and seeing them hit the mark again and again. I dug just about every new song, ESPECIALLY the fourth and sixth songs (that sixth song, holy shit). Getting Did You See the Words and WE TIGERS was an amazing surprise, as well. The Merriweather jams predictably slayed, but I almost felt like they disrupted the flow of the set just a little bit. Still, you can't argue with Brother Sport.

Yes, can't wait to hear that sixth song in a couple hours. I'm especially excited to see how it evolves over time.

Yes. They were really tight, the tweaks they've made sound great and they were totally into it. Plus, they were in a room tonite more befitting for a band like AC. Oh, and the visuals were way more interesting...I can't wait to see what Eric Copeland has in store for Coachella.

I'm really liking the new songs..especially the "I Don't Wanna Knock You Down" (sic) song. It's a very, very psychedelic set. I am very curious to see how this goes over on Saturday.

wmgaretjax
04-14-2011, 06:47 AM
agreed. they were a bit more confident and a bit tighter last night. made for a really awesome show. a few of these songs are already instant hits for me... the others are coming along swimmingly. still weird they are jamming out this set sub-headlining.

Well, here are my thoughts on the new stuff. Like I said...it's very psychedelic and a different direction from the last three releases. And, as much as they may lose a lot of the newer fans that hopped on after MPP (or even SJ), I am into this tack they've taken. I've became really tired of the legion of bands parroting the AC sound the past few years. I mean, even fucking Vampire Weekend did a song that ripped off their sound.

Enough already. This new stuff may (eventually) end all that. Maybe not.

I don't know what the new stuff sounds like yet, but if they still have tracks like "Safer" in them, I'm into it.

anyone going to their show tonight in redway? if so PLEASE post the setlist. thanks =)

I went, the setlist was about the same, show was better than Petaluma though, better sound, better crowd. The Redway crowd seemed like all locals and I wouldn't be surprised if half of them knew each other.
