I listened to Here Comes the Indian for the first time in over a year front to back while on a drive yesterday. It was much more cohesive than I had remembered, maybe because in the last year I've listened to a lot of Can so their influences/what they were trying to do makes more sense, I dunno.

Now I really want to go out to Joshua Tree in the middle of the night with nothing but that album and a bag of hallucinogenics, and put it on and indulge as the sun comes up.

i can assist you with this journey. when?

TallGuyCM

The Wednesday night/Thursday morning before Coachella would be the ideal way to start that weekend.

GeezrRckr
10-14-2010, 02:14 PM
i like this idea. could you pick me up at PSP on the way (sort of) to Joshua Tree? i could provide, ehem, some compensation for this service.

TallGuyCM

Definitely. Of course this wouldn't actually end up happening, but it's fun to speculate. :)

I was really digging Avey Tare's album. A lot more than I thought I would. Unlike every other single AC related release, it's just low key, and it's fun, a little bit like Pullhair Rubeye in that way. Just sounds exactly like something he would do in his off time between Animal Collective work. But I have to go back and listen to it again.

wmgaretjax
10-16-2010, 08:35 AM
i dunno how fun it is... pretty dark shit. that said, i think it is quite good as well.

I keep saying I'm going to cut down on the drugs at Coachella, but I have never been to Joshua Tree and would love to trip out there. It would be a great start to Coachella weekend. My goal next year is to not roll all 3 days.

Regarding Avey Tare's album... I really like it. Given it 5 listens now, it all clicked yesterday on my 4th listen. There's still a lot to absorb, but this will continue to get listens from me. It almost feels like a really dark dance record at times. I love that it is a little noisier and feels a little less like pop songs than AC's recent work.

10-16-2010, 08:34 PM
the first and third tracks kill... i like the last two as well. overall it's growing on me pretty fast and hard.

Eh, I like them, but then again I like just about everything they've done. The songs aren't on the level of Person Pitch, but always moving to new things is one of the things I love most about AC. "Slow Motion" is awesome and I've been liking "Alsatian Darn" a lot so far, "You Can Count On Me" leaves me wanting more though.

But yeah, I just came here to say I can't get "Oliver Twist" out of my head.

GeezrRckr
10-27-2010, 08:37 AM
this is pretty exciting. i might have to go to this...just wished it wasn't so damn close to Coachella, though. never been to England before...hmm.

All Tomorrow's Parties have done a pretty amazing job lining up important, iconic bands to curate their festivals, and they've just scored another one. Animal Collective will headline and curate the only ATP festival of May 2011. The Animal Collective ATP comes to Butlins Holiday Centre in Minehead, England May 13-15.

Alongside Animal Collective themselves, the bill will feature Gang Gang Dance, Lee "Scratch" Perry, Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti, Broadcast, Black Dice, Meat Puppets (performing Up on the Sun), the Frogs (performing It's Only Right & Natural), IUD, Omar-S, Prince Rama, Spectrum, Dent May, Group Doueh, the Brothers Unconnected, Deradoorian, Zomby, Vladislav Delay, and Sublime Frequencies DJs and films. More acts will be announced later.

In other ATP news, the festival comes to Japan for the first time next year. I'll Be Your Mirror, a one-day ATP event, will take place at Tokyo's Studio Coast February 27.

this seems like an appropriate place to post this..
I decided to make a mix of Avey Tare, Panda Bear and Animal Collective.
I basically just put it in order by Avey and Panda songs that compliment each other followed by good reminders of their combined forces with Animal Collective.

Laughing Hieroglyphic
Tomboy
Winter's Love (live at BBC)
3 Umbrellas
Last Night at the Jetty
People (live)
Heads Hammock
Slow Motion
Safer
Oliver Twist
Alsatian Darn
Graze
Drone
Lucky 1
I Think I Can
Ghost of Books
You Can Count On Me
Street Flash

Still messing around with the exact order, but I like the idea of mixing it all up to sound like one semi-coherent album. (and mostly post-merriweather post)

So yeah. I've been on an all things 'Animal Collective' kick lately.

This is when I think AnCo were really at their peak and I really, REALLY want them to pick up guitars again. I also fantasize about a situation in which Animal Collective decide to just do a new, massive, highly produced tour where they just go through their catalog and perform their greatest songs, giving them all the best live treatment possible. Which leads me to this video.

Can you imagine THIS Animal Collective hitting the stage again with a crazy ass setup and busting this out along with old favorites like Street Flash, Grass, and People while throwing in their newer material and even some of their solo stuff?

IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN THIS, YOU MUST NOW

Also, here's an mp3 of this performance that I tried to pump up a little.

I saw that tour where they're doing Purple Bottle. It was really wild and weird, and I distinctly remember a black dude with an obviously self cut mohawk/mullet combination complaining that he couldn't wear a certain animal collective shirt anymore because they were selling it at that show so other people would have it. At that time I'd only sparingly been introduced to hipsters. The show was good too.

Both of those videos make me happy because they are awesome, but sad that I didn't like much good music 5 years ago. Especially the Coachella one because that was my first year. I could have discovered AC and Mogwai that year, but that wouldn't happen until later... such a shame. Wish I would have seen both of them back then.

I've been listen to a lot of Panda Bear and Avey Tare solo, but not much Animal Collective.

I think this is my favorite AC live video I've seen.
Coachella 2006 was such a great show. Anyone remember the actual setlist? I know it was something like Banshee Beat > Safer > Peacebone > We Tigers > Fireworks.

edit: google says

1. banshee beat
2. peacebone
3. safer
4. chores
5. fireworks
6. tigers

Seeing that 2006 setlist makes me wish I'd been there even more... that is a nearly perfect festival setlist in my opinion. Safer is one of my favorite songs of theirs. I'm pretty sure that is the only song on that list I haven't seen by now, but still all those together!

wmgaretjax
11-18-2010, 08:15 PM
Safer was an incredible song live... Definitely in my top 5 songs by them.

this should be interesting (and in the WSJ, of all places...wtf?!). man, i really wish Tomboy would fucking drop already!

Noah Lennox, experimental musician, better known as Panda Bear as a member of Animal Collective

I'm moving back to the States for a while so the rest of Animal Collective and I can be in the same place to write songs together and make something we're excited about. "Tomboy," my new album, is really, really close to a final mix; I spent the last three years or so on it. It's taken me forever. I feel like I did the tour for it already: Animal Collective and myself are in the habit of touring the stuff live before its release.

My family and I are going from Lisbon to Baltimore for three months. I'm going to be living in my mom's house, which is insane. I hope the turmoil isn't too much for my kids. I would be lying if I said I wasn't anxious or nervous, but it's the kind of challenge that makes things interesting. I'd love to do something physical like exercising once a week, but I don't feel I have the time. When I look back on my life, I used to think I didn't have enough time for things. But now I really don't have time. It's just the way things are.

GeezrRckr
01-14-2011, 09:28 AM
finally!

Save the date: Animal Collective member Panda Bear has announced the completion of his long-gestating new album Tomboy. And now you can know when to expect it, too: April 19, via his own Paw Tracks label.

Tomboy will feature the songs previously released on a series of vinyl singles (which will conclude with a forthcoming single on Kompakt) as well as new material. According to a press release, "all the songs have been added to" and given new mixes by former Spacemen 3 member Sonic Boom, who handled production on MGMT's sophomore album, last year's Congratulations.

when was that, Matt?

they upgraded their stage set quite a bit during the MPP tour. i'm sure this time around it will be even better...esp if they have Danny doing live visuals like with Noah's tour last year. as for the music...that will stand on itself, but i'll let others chime in on that for obvious reasons. all i can say is that they really killed the main stage at APW in 2009...and that was during the day too. i'm confident that it will be pretty spectacular.

well, if it was Sasquatch, that was not a good gauge being that they thought that was a horrible set (the sun was in their eyes the entire set and they had to "guess" on using their gear). they insisted on a night set this time around.

but, they are a polarizing band and there will surely be lots of AF fans whining about AC's set afterwards, no doubt. hopefully the new jams they're working on now will throw all the MPP fans for a loop.

Since car camping passes sold out so quickly... I think I'll be able to do Big Sur if I can get tickets. I managed to get a companion parking pass and in our group we have 4 camping spots, so I'm thinking about going to the show since I won't really need to be there early on thursday like usual. When I saw them at Bonnaroo, My Girls fell very flat. However, the first 3/4 of their set had sound troubles, so I figured it wasn't their fault. I talked to some people who saw them in Van a few week prior and they said that set was fantastic and My Girls turned the place into a dance party. cover art. it's getting released on April 12th, so it'll be purchasable at Coachella as part of Record Store Day

I'm reading his choice of the face palm as a subversive message to his hipster fans.

Alright is anybody else planning on going to Big Sur and Coachella?

That was my plan until Coachella sold out... I was thinking it would be the other way around... I'll find out in a minute if I'm doing Big Sur, I guess.

Dammit, I got nothing. I clicked 2 tickets "ADD TO ORDER" at 12:00 and then at 12:01 it said tickets "no longer available."

I guess the idea is that you keep refreshing throughout the day?

This is gnarlier than the show in 09. I was hoping it would be easier this time around.

refreshing won't help. just add yourself to the waitlist and cross your fingers. you'll get an email (check your spam) if you get a chance to purchase.

Oh alright, that makes things easier I suppose. I wish I had typed myself into that waitlist faster though...

0/2 here as well. Fuck that pisses me off. I'm trying to just think about the fact that I got Portishead tickets... but man I wanted to go to these. I hope the waitlist comes through, I fucking love the Henry Miller Library, it is so surreal to see music there.

it sold out in 6 seconds...

but keep the hope. at least 2 or 3 people on the board got in via the waitlist for arcade fire. just check your spam folder over the course of the next few days.

At the last show, 10 minutes was the fastest sell out for a show that I'd ever attended or tried to attend. New record.
