‘Super lice’ leave parents scratching their heads

Stubborn parasites outsmart drugs — and mortify moms

Head lice, also known as pediculosis capitis, cause itching and outrage when they're detected, most often on the heads of schoolchildren. Increasingly, the bugs are becoming resistant to most common pesticides, frustrating parents and public health officials alike.

Three weeks into Maddie Ratcliff’s first year of school, the South Carolina kindergartner is already the subject of an unwelcome science experiment: What’s the best way to get rid of head lice?

It’s a question that has stumped her mother, Brittany Ratcliff, 28, of Charleston, who was horrified to find tiny parasites in her 5-year-old’s hair this week — and even more upset to discover that over-the-counter medications wouldn’t kill them because the bugs have grown resistant to the poison.

“I’m a little traumatized,” said Ratcliff, an office administrator. “I was very grossed out by it.”

My kids got lice when they were younger from Mc'D's playland. I tried everything and those fuckers wouldnt go away. So I got the dog flea and tick shampoo. Not only did it kill the bugs but they had the shiniest hair ever.

My kids are never playing at McDonald's again. Gross! I would totally freak if my kids got lice.

Oh trust me, I did totally freak. This was when they were much younger and I lived in an apartment without a washer and dryer. I had to wash everything because I was so grossed out, shit that hadn't even been used in months. Cost me $40 in quarters at least. Then all the shampoo and shit, then it came back. So I went through the whole thing again. I was tempted to shave their heads but then my babysitter recommended the flea and tick shampoo.
