End of the world due in seven days?

SCIENTISTS are trying to stop the most powerful experiment ever – saying the black holes it will create could destroy the world.

Dubbed by some the Doomsday test, it will be carried out next week in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), located 300ft underground near the French-Swiss border.

The machine is 17 miles long and cost £4.4billion to create.

When its switch is pulled on September 10, this atom-smasher will become a virtual time machine, revealing what happened when the universe came into existence 14 billion years ago.

New particles of matter are expected to be discovered, new dimensions found beyond the four known, as scientists re-create conditions in the first BILLIONTHS of a second after the Big Bang.

The atom smasher ... the 17-mile-long machine that some fear will destroy our planet

Experts even predict that millions of tiny black holes will be produced — baby brothers of the monsters gobbling up dust and stars at the heart of the galaxies.
Secrets

That is why boffins are now trying to stop the project with a last-ditch challenge in the courts.

They fear the LHC experimenters are tinkering with the unknown and putting mankind — and our whole planet — at risk.

The group responsible for the experiment, the European Nuclear Research Centre (CERN), says that these mini black holes will vanish as quickly as they are created.

But the anti-CERN brigade accuse the scientists of playing God, warning that no one can guarantee that the black holes will not survive, rapidly growing in size to suck the Earth out of existence in an instant.

But CERN, which includes several UK scientists, say their work is vital to unlock the secrets of matter that forms everything known in the universe.

In the experiment, atomic particles will be fired in opposite directions along the 17-mile long underground ring — the length of the Circle Line on the London Underground.

They will travel so fast that they make 11,245 trips around the tunnel every SECOND.

From the collisions, boffins expect to discover a fundamental bit of the atom, called the Higgs boson, that is expected to exist but which has never been seen.

Professor Otto Rossler, from the Eberhard Karls University of Tubingen in Germany, is one of the scientists mounting the legal challenge at the European Court of Human Rights against 20 countries which are funding the project.

He said: “It is quite plausible that these little black holes will survive and will grow and eat the planet from the inside out.”

A CERN spokesman said: “It will not be producing anything that does not already happen routinely in nature.”

American Nobel prize winning physicist Frank Wilczek of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has received death threats. Professor Cox, typically sedate, adds irritatingly, "Anyone who thinks the LHC will destroy the world is a twat. "
(bug)

James Gillies, the LHC head of public relations says he's gotten calls from people literally sobbing and asking him to halt the project. He states, "They phone me and say: ‘I am seriously worried. Please tell me that my children are safe.’"
(bugs mommy)

While some merely beg Mr. Gillies to convince them that the world is not going to end when the LHC is turned on, he says other take a angrier stance. He states, "There are a number who say: 'You are evil and dangerous and you are going to destroy the world.' I find myself getting slightly angry, not because people are getting in touch but the fact they have been driven to do that by what is nonsense. What we are doing is enriching humanity, not putting it at risk."

There have also been numerous legal attempts to thwart construction, none of which have succeeded. Doomsday predictors argue that there is a small but serious chance the LHC will breed a cataclysm that could kill the world. Since 1994, when the project was first envisioned, they have fought it. They frequently quote Our Final Century?: Will the Human Race Survive the Twenty-first Century? - written by Lord Rees, astronomer royal and president of the Royal Society The only problem is that Lord Rees says his book is not being quoted accurately, stating, "My book has been misquoted in one or two places. I would refer you to the up-to-date safety study."

Scientists have patiently explained to those concerned many times that the most recent research shows that cosmic rays hitting the Earth daily have more powerful particle collisions than the LHC would. Thus the added danger of the collider is negligible according to an updated 2003 study from the LHC Safety Assessment Group. It dispels worries that the reactor might create a deadly black hole. It concludes, "Nature has already conducted the equivalent of about a hundred thousand LHC experimental programmes on Earth - and the planet still exists."

While the reactor could produce black holes, according to physicists, they would be tiny and would not be capable of growing. The study states, "Each collision of a pair of protons in the LHC will release an amount of energy comparable to that of two colliding mosquitoes, so any black hole produced would be much smaller than those known to astrophysicists."

Further, the LHC will be incapable of producing possibly dangerous strangelets, based on experimental information gathered at the Brookhaven National Laboratory's Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider, New York.

However, despite the world's top scientists confident in the system's safety, and the news media constantly seeking to sooth public concerns on the topic, many still remain vocally opposed to the project.

The largest collider currently operating is in the US. This one is 7 times more powerful but when they turn it on they are only going to be running low level experiments with it.

It takes a long time for this thing to heat up, it won't be up to full power until sometime next year.

quick bullet points for some of u sheepz:

Dark Energy
: currently accounts for 73% of the total mass/energy of the universe.... scientists don't know what the fukk it is.. it is only HYPOTHETICAL right now u fukkin toolzz

Dark Matter
: currently accounts for 22% of the total mass/energy of the universe.... scientists don't know what the fukk it is but only GUESS that it's there because of weird gravitation on visible objects

soooo... give me a second.... quick math
73 + 22 = 95

so that means scientists only know whats going on in about 5% of the universe..
and they are using the collider to look for particles they've NEVER seen before
and are only HYPOTHETICAL.....

i mean for fukk sakes...... don't sheep this shit

"It will be extremely exciting if the LHC did produce black holes," CERN theoretical physicist John Ellis said. "OK, so some people are going to say, 'Black holes? Those big things eating up stars?' No. These are microscopic, tiny little black holes. And they’re extremely unstable. They would disappear almost as soon as they were produced."

Not everyone is convinced that the black holes would disappear. "It doesn't have to be that way," said Walter Wagner, a former radiation safety officer with a law degree who is one of the plaintiffs in the federal lawsuit. Despite a series of reassuring scientific studies, Wagner and others insist that the black holes might not fizzle out, and they fear that the mini-singularities produced by the Large Hadron Collider will fall to the center of the earth, grow larger and swallow more and more of Earth's matter.

how the fuck do black holes 'fly' or 'evaporate'? this doesn't quite make sense to me.

I really wonder how we think we know so much about something we've only experienced from 1600 light years away. (which, for emphasis, is about 9,400,000,000,000,000 miles).

still, stephen hawking is convinced it's entirely safe, and if anybody knows anything about black holes it's him. I'm not about to argue.

I firmly believe in this quote from a Douglas Adams novel..

There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable.

There is another theory which states that this has already happened.

yeah, and I read that since it's as cold as outer space in there, in order to fix it they have to wait until they can heat it up to a temperature that humans can actually enter it, which can take several months. then they can fix it, then they have to wait for it to cool down again. several more months.

Large Hadron Collider is going back in time & destroying itself

A pair of otherwise distinguished physicists have suggested that the hypothesized Higgs boson, which physicists hope to produce with the collider, might be so abhorrent to nature that its creation would ripple backward through time and stop the collider before it could make one, like a time traveler who goes back in time to kill his grandfather

this comment about the article is awesome:

The many-worlds interpretation of quantum theory could explain the "fate theory" pretty nicely. Simply stated, it says that at each instant history branches out into as many paths as there are possible quantum states - a quite fast branching tree. In each path we experience what that path is like. So the cat is dead and alive and stays that way. We just experience a different outcome in each different paths.

Now, if something 'bad' happens when a machine like the LHC or the SSC is successfully activated then we are not going to be there to experience it. Maybe, these machines seem to fail because these are the only history paths in which we are still alive to notice what happened... and read about it in the NYT!

So stop being negative and enjoy this nearly infinite Creation. Amen.

That actually is kinda cool.

but no. The many worlds theory should also allow for an almost infinite number of universes where the LHC does operates successfully and we are still around to see it. In fact there is a variation of the theory which claims that in each universe the physical laws and constants are slightly tweaked and thus guaranteeing tiny harmless black holes in any number of them.

oh, and china is building one much larger than this one... fyi.

That's way scarier than anything else in this thread. The chinese show reckless disregard for the communal wellbeing of humanity, and I guess by extension, the universe(s). Those jerks intentionally crashed a couple satellites together last year and doubled the amount of deadly debris flying around in low orbit. Just to see if they could do it.

And what's even scarier: If the chinese do discover new elementary particles they're going to give them unpronounceable chinese names. Now that's fucked. It's bad enough we've got chinese dinosaurs.
