good point. but ive been there a few times. whats that count for?

a lot- on any one visit, were you someone in a situation such as a war defector, etc, you could have taken refuge and very quickly become a citizen!
our immigration and refugee policies are actually a lot tougher than most people seem to think, but once you're actually on canadian soil, it'll take ten years to get you out, in which time you can easily go through the legal processes involved in obtaining refugee, then landed immigrant, then citizenship status

so hey, if mccain wins, you're welcome to crash at my place :P

Their official, but little used, title is THE ARCADE FUCKING FIRE,, which was the honorific bestowed on them by the Queen Elizabeth II for Services of Awesomness to Canada and The World. They generally go by their less formal name though, they're modest like that.

Although it's worth pointing out that two of them are Texan.

Simple Plan = worse for Canadian music than Celine Dion

also, a devalued Canadian dollar is actually better for our economy....with the dollar on par it hurts our manufacturing industry (basically most of our industries in fact, considering we are mainly an exporting country)...also, being against the Charter of Rights and Freedoms is akin to being against racial equality or handicap ramps, i don't quite get what you could have against it...if you're talking about the 'notwithstanding clause', blame the Premiers, not Trudeau or Chretien...

My beef with the Charter is that it is essential anti-democratic. The charter gives Judges the right to strike down laws they see as inconsitent with the Charter. However, Judges are not elected in Canada.
We elect our Members of Legislature so they can deal with social, economical and political issues in a way we think would benefit us. However, since the Charter of Rights, Judges are making the final calls on some of these issues. Basically, the unelected judges are taking away the jobs of our elected representatives therefore making the process undemocratic.
Not only that though, these judges can also write legislature. I don't know about you, but I think it is rediculous that so many unelected represetatives can strike down and write laws in a "democratic" country.
Oh, but it doesn't stop there. The Charter has also given way to interest group polics. Yes, it is important that minorities get their interests heard, but interest groups and minorities go through the courts to get their interests heard, rather than the democratic process. They are essentially taking a short cut, using up court time and going about it in completely wrong way... due to the Charter.
That is my beef.

Our Charter of Rights is basically the same as the US Charter of Rights actually... I am not that familar with the rest of the constitution though.
What is really funny about the Canadian Charter though, is that people, like Pierre Trudeau claim the Charter to be "uniquely Canadian" and "a defining characteristic of Canada." When really all it did was make us more like the US. Ha.

not really but we can leave it there...

also, re: the democratic process and minorities... they cannot be properly represented by the democratic process precisely because they are minorities...often, the majority doesn't take the interests of the minority into account...a properly executed Charter of Rights sets the minimum standard to which all citizens should be treated, ensuring that the minority cannot simply be steamrolled by the will of the majority...take wheelchair ramps as an example: people in wheelchairs are a minority in Canada...before the Charter came about, there was no requirement for reasonable access to be made for them in government buildings...sadly, this was not a big electoral issue...upon adoption of the Charter, however, a successful challenge was made, forcing the adoption wheelchair accessibility in all government buildings - i happen to think this was a good thing

regarding the Charter's imposition of the will of 'unelected judges' on us, this is not exactly true...the notwithstanding clause of the Charter allows Parliament or a provincial legislature to override court decisions if they so wish...to date, only Quebec has taken advantage of this clause

Facts and Figures
In late 2004 in Moncton, New Brunswick, several customers at a Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce ATM were dispensed a total of 11 bills of Canadian Tire money instead of real bills. They were compensated by the bank.
Contrary to popular belief, the man on the "money" is not Canada's first Prime Minister Sir John A. Macdonald; he is actually a fictional creation named Sandy McTire.
Canadian Tire money is the main topic of the song "La Chute du huard" (Loonie's fall) by Quebec singer Mononc' Serge, the lyrics claiming it is more stable and a better investment than the Canadian dollar.
Culturally, Canadian Tire money is sometimes referenced by comedians: perhaps as a national version of "Monopoly money", perhaps invoking a pejorative comparison of the value of Canadian dollars against U.S. dollars (currency of a dominant Canadian trading partner), or perhaps as a misunderstood exotic element of Canadian society (cf. Ron James' comedic reference to the person depicted on the bill as "our king").
Canadian Tire money is one of 12 forms of payment explicitly listed as allowed for use by sellers on the Canadian version of the online auction site eBay.
In the mid 1990s, a man in Germany was caught with up to $11,000,000 in counterfeit Canadian Tire money. It was recovered before he left for Canada to redeem it.

I have a bunch of Candian Tire money in my car.

Also, all Candians don't have to join the Arcade Fire... they could join Broken Social Scene instead.

no no, the Canadian tire money is in addition to one's actual change....its something like 5% of your purchase

Oh.

Well, that's a fine idea. I thought they were like Disney Dollars.

Since Vancouver is Hosting the 2010 Olympics

Questions About the 2010 Olympics

Now that Vancouver has won the chance to host the 2010 Winter Olympics, people all over the world are asking questions. Believe it or not, these questions about Canada were posted on an International Tourism Website. (Frightening, isn't it?)

Q: I have never seen it warm on Canadian TV, so how do the plants grow? (UK)

A. We import all plants fully grown and then just sit around and watch them die.

Q: Will I be able to see polar bears in the street? (USA)

A: Depends on how much you've been drinking.

Q: I want to walk from Vancouver to Toronto--can I follow the Railroad tracks? (Sweden)

A: Sure, it's only four thousand miles. Take lots of water.

Q: Is it safe to run around in the bushes in Canada? (Sweden)

A: So it's true what they say about Swedes.

Q: It is imperative that I find the names and addresses of places to contact for a stuffed beaver. (Italy)

A: Let's not touch this one.

Q: Are there any ATMs (cash machines) in Canada? Can you send me a list of them in Toronto, Vancouver, Edmonton, and Halifax? (UK)

A: What did your last slave die of?

Q: Can you give me some information about hippo racing in Canada? (USA)

A: A-fri-ca is the big triangle shaped continent south of Europe. Ca-na-da is that big country to your north...oh forget it. Sure, the hippo racing is every Tuesday night in Calgary. Come naked.

Q: Which direction is north in Canada? (USA)

A: Face south and then turn 180 degrees. Contact us when you get here, and we'll send the rest of the directions.

Q: Can I bring cutlery into Canada? (UK)

A: Why? Just use your fingers like we do.

Q: Can you send me the Vienna Boys' Choir schedule? (USA)

A: Aus-tri-a is that quaint little country bordering Ger-man-y, which is... oh forget it. Sure, the Vienna Boys Choir plays every Tuesday night in Vancouver and in Calgary, straight after the hippo races. Come naked.

Q: Do you have perfume in Canada? (Germany)

A: No, WE don't stink.

Q: I have developed a new product that is the fountain of youth. Can you sell it in Canada? (USA)

A: Anywhere significant numbers of Americans gather.

Q: Can you tell me the regions in British Columbia where the female population is smaller than the male population? (Italy)

A: Yes, gay nightclubs.

Q: Do you celebrate Thanksgiving in Canada? (USA)

A: Only at Thanksgiving.

Q: Are there supermarkets in Toronto and is milk available all year round? (Germany)

A: No, we are a peaceful civilization of Vegan hunter/gathers. Milk is illegal.

Q: I have a question about a famous animal in Canada, but I forget its name. It's a kind of big horse with horns. (USA)

A: It's called a moose. It is tall and very violent, eating the brains of anyone walking close to it. You can scare it off by spraying yourself with human urine before you go out walking.

Q: Will I be able to speak English most places I go? (USA)

A: Yes, but you will have to learn it first.

I want him NOWWWWWWWWW *stomps feet* God damn the bad apples out there who've abused the marriage immigrant thingy making this a pain in my back side. Don't base all of Canada off of Cranbrook.... lol

I finally got my passport application sent off in the mail yesterday since mine was stolen last year and I never got it replaced. It will be nice to be able to return to the great white north whenever I want again.

JebusLives

From where, the US? Not really sure. What I notice going to the states is that everything looks like it does on TV, but then you probably don't watch Canadian shows. I'm sure the culture shock is less than you would experience going basically anyplace else, however.

Vancouver feels a lot like San Fran, if you replaced all the black people and mexicans with asians and east indians.

bmack86
02-06-2010, 09:57 AM
There's lots of asians in San Francisco too...

JebusLives

LOT of asians in Vancouver though... something close to 50% of the population. There is Chinese signage throughout much of the city. Both are very multicultural cities for sure - hence the comparison.

So turns out I'm going to be in Calgary from Monday 4/12 to Thursday 4/15 (thankfully i'm back early on Thursday so I can drive my ass to Coachella, woohoo). Anything I should see while I'm there?

JebusLives
04-07-2010, 05:10 PM
Calgary is sort of a shithole. Rent a car and drive out to Kananaskis or Bragg Creek (buy a map) and go hiking. Skip the town of Banff, its a busy tourist trap. Canmore is better to wander around.

Its chilly in the mountains. Dress warm!

Thanks for the heads up. Unfortunately it's a work thing, i'm traveling up on Monday night, all day meetings Tuesday/Wednesday, and traveling back early Thursday. If I'm able to do, will have to be Tuesday evening or Wednesday evening. Not even a cool bar in the area?

Kensington is a cool area. It has some neat bars, shops, and restaurants. Bernard Callebaut has a shop there and if you like chocolate AT ALL you should stop by. Though there are other locations around too.

Jebus, ur right, Calgary is a shithole. Well...not a total shithole, but definitely lacking in stuff to do. i asked several people in the building i was working in and they all pointed me to the casino. WTF? i'm in downtown, there's like 2 gay bars, and one wasn't even open last night. ate at Palomino's across the street from my hotel. okay BBQ considering it's not even in the US and had a drink at a random place on 8th st, which was a cool restaurant in an old bank building.

headed down to 17th street to check out the Ship and Anchor. i found a copy of the FFWD (looks like the Calgary version of LA Weekly) and i see there's lots more bars in that area and an American Apparel, so i'm guessing this is the hipster area of Calgary?

music choices there seemed to be a lot of local stuff, but I JUST missed Angels & Airwaves/Say Anything on Monday and HIM on Tuesday :puke :puke i might just end up going to the casino if i don't find anything else interesting.

Woo!! ended finding Congorock spinning at Robot Rock at The Habitat. Met some great people and danced till 2am. Was a cool pre-coachella vibe considering the opening DJ (DJ Reece) was coming down for coachella the next morning. Headed over to to polo fields now.
