Who are some bands that you weren't familiar with at Coachella but like now and wish you would have seen?

For myself, the biggest one is Cut Copy. I caught their last 2 songs while waiting for Dan lesac vs. Scroobius Pip but now that I have their newest album I really wish I'd have seen it all.

Also The Shout Out Louds, Sia and Duffy. Although, I would have only caught a few minutes of Sia as there was no way I'd leave My Morning Jacket early.

Agreed, she had obviously had a few drinks and missed her autograph signing because she was "late arriving to the festival"... But she still sounded great.

As for Duffy.... I caught the end of her set, waiting for CSS this weekend at APW and well... she's even worse live.

'05 - miss kitten, zap mama, bright eyes, stereophonics, arcade fire.
'06 - imogen heap, eagles of death metal, scissor sisters, the go! team, infadels, gnarls barkley.
'07 - amy winehouse, lily allen, gotan project, the roots.
'08 - datarock.

for the most part i see all i want to see. there were probably some good reasons as to why i missed the bands listed above but looking back over the posters those are bands i would categorize as "i'm probably never going to see them outside coachella" or "i should have seen them THAT year instead of when i did."

Im sure this is old news but..

Did you know Modeselektor played THIS (http://www.zshare.net/audio/169905529c9edd5a/) track right before Roger Waters started to take the stage?

I dont really think I missed as much from 2008 as I did in 2007.

I also saw some Depeche Mode in 2006 and still got to the Sahara before takeoff.

If I could go back I would have stayed for The Raconteurs. Wasn't all that familiar with them until after Coachella and now I like their new album. I was just walking around during their performance.

I probably would have tried to catch the first part Santogold but there were plenty of conflicts during her timeslot.

Also, I was just chilling out in the shade tent when Does It Offend You Yeah? was playing. I would have got a good position in the Gobi for that show knowing what I know now.

Sharon Jones was simply amazing...there were a few other acts I caught that might have topped or matched her set (Prince, Portishead, MMJ, Roger Waters, National (who were five times better at Coachella than any other time I've seen them), Akron Family), but only Prince in last year's line-up topped SJ for sheer showmanship...Just an amazing Stage Presence and bands don't come any tighter than the Dap Kings.

Making the right moves at Coachella is a very personal thing. Some choices will never be understood by others. This is the beauty of the festival. I had only ever been happy with myself and my decisions until this year. I moved around too much trying to see everything. You have to make decisions and let some things go. Personally I wish I would have withstood the urge and the call of the Sahara this year stayed with Roger Waters for DSOTM. After finishing Modeselektor's awesome set I headed for R.W. and caught a few songs, saw the pig and some pyrotechnics but for some reason the dance tent drew me back in for fear of missing something incredible. All said and done Chromeo and SMD were fun but I think I was supposed to see DSOTM.

I did the exact same thing. I started out at Modeselektor, but wasn't feeling it. So I left to go watch the first 30 minutes of Waters, and then left and came back just as SMD was coming on. But I started to miss Waters almost instantly, so I went back to Waters and stayed till he started DSOTM. We stayed for a bit of Justice, but left early because it was way too crowded (and annoying frat kids near us).

Can you explain why Modeselektor makes me want to jump up and dance my ass off but yet when I watched them at Coachella they were underwhelming? Agreed. How do you feel about whole sets betao?

It has taken me years to discover that sometimes seeing 15 mins of everything is not always as good as seeing 45 mins of a great band.

Sometimes the most epic things happen within a 5 min window, in the last 10 minutes of a set.

I agree, but only to an extent. When I got home, I tried to get into Modeselektor again but couldn't. It's just not for me. Who knows, maybe i'll try one last time and catch them again if they play coachella or something.

I went to watch Roger Waters after maybe 20 mins of Modeselektor. To be completely honest, I have never given Pink Floyd a real listen. I have heard some of the more popular songs (another brick in the wall, wish you were here), but never dug deeper.

So I went in to see him with no real expectations, and I was completely floored. I stayed for about 30 minutes then went back to go see SMD, but as soon as SMD started, I said to myself "wait, THE Roger Waters is playing right now - I have to see this over SMD". I came back and saw the last few songs he did before he started DSOTM.

It was just something about that atmosphere - I was watching from the back towards the center, and the crowd where I was perfect. They were cheering at the right times during songs and everything. Their performance of "Leaving Beirut" almost made me cry, the entire moment was just that powerful. And then of course there was the pig, which I thought was just really cool.

For me, it was just something that I had to be there to see and experience. If Waters ever does a DSOTM tour again, I will definitely be at the nearest show.

Sometimes a novice has to find his way via mistakes. I was sort of stuck in '90s grunge at the time, not familiar with new indie music, or the message board. Got a ticket based on wanting to see Rage and RHCP, honestly. Then Arcade Fire changed everything, thankfully.

Bands I missed all or most of because of conflicts, but would LOVE to see now:
Black Mountain
Sons & Daughters
Akron/Family
Boys Noize
Aesop Rock
Santogold
Murs
Adam Freeland
Pendulum (fuck the Verve sucked...)

Cancelled acts I'd LOVE to see now-
The (MOTHER-FUCKING!) Bees
Jamie T
The Streets
Adele
Turbonegro

Bands i'd KILL to see again-
Portishead
Aphex Twin
the Swell Season
Bonde Do Role
Rilo Kiley
Gogol Bordello
dan le sac vs. Scroobius Pip
Battles

Acts that should NEVER be allowed to perform at Coachell again-
Jack Johnson
Scars on Broadway
Vampire Weekend
My Morning Jacket
Sean Penn

Midnisht Juggernauts were so-so.
I'm guessing you saw MGMT instead of Boyz Noise? I should have hightailed my ass to the Sahara after MGMTs first song.
What was so great about Dan Le Sac vs. Scroobius Pip? I left halfway through for some Spicy Pie.

I'm hoping your hate for MMJ is because you want them to have a longer setlist, not because you hate their music.

2006:
Missed Imogen Heap & Sigur Ros for TV on the Radio & Ladytron (whom I got to see x2 the same year..)

2007:
Looking back on it, would have rather been in the Gobi watching Cornelius, than the lackluster The GBQ set. And Air was a huge waste of time obviously... I shoulda also saw Ratatat instead of Manu Chao.

2008:
I did awesome in retrospect this year. I probably should have seen Booka Shade or Swervedriver instead of DIOYY?, but the chacid had it's own agendas ;p

Daft Punk...there, I said it.
And I wasn't seeing anyone else...I was heading back to the hotel.
How was I suppose to know?! I hadn't listened to them before at that point.

no, missed all but a couple minutes of Boys Noize to see Bonde do Role... totally worth it, but i wanted to see all of Boys Noize too...

dan le sac vs. Scroobius Pip? pure awesomeness... a cover of Prince's 'Cream' and 'Thou Shalt Always Kill' (as well as his kick-ass spoken wurd) were some of the highlights of the entire day

i was really close for the beginning of MMJ (after enjoying Penn's rant), but left in the middle of the first song (my biggest regret was being able to hear 2-3 songs before i could get outta earshot)...

biggest regrets:
-The Verve instead of Pendulum
-left Portishead after 'sour times' to catch Flogging Molly (blashemy!)
-The Black Lips (really disappointing, didn't even play 'veni vidi vici'... i was literally falling asleep)
-waiting for Scars of Broadway to finally take the stage, instead of checking out Cinematic Orchestra or Dwight Yoakam...
-missing the second half of Metric for Sean Penn... ugh.
-left Love & Rockets to catch a song or two by Sons & Daughters (which was WAAY better), but ended up missing 'No New Tale To Tell'... :(
-missing Black Mountain because some moron scheduled them during Roger Waters... DSOTM was totally worth it, but come on...
...and honestly, i wasn't able to get myself into Goldfrapp's set (she shoulda been on the Outdoor after dark), but it enabled me to catch the end of Diplo in the tent (who was melting faces in preparation of Aphex decending from the heavens)...
