Here are some of my choice picks with some links:

Grand Archives - s/t
http://assets1.pitchforkmedia.com/images/original/45780.grandarchives.jpg
Grand Archives' MySpace (http://www.myspace.com/grandarchives)
Pitchfork's Review (http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/record_review/48979-grand-archives-grand-archives)
Tinymixtapes' Review (http://www.tinymixtapes.com/Grand-Archives)

I know Pitchfork gave them a half-decent review, but these guys are stunning. I find their release more enjoyable than the new Band of Horses release, and I don't feel like they're getting enough attention. Songs to listen to: "Louis Riel", "The Crime Window", "Miniature Birds", "Index Moon", "Torn Blue Foam Couch".

Martina Topley-Bird - The Blue God
http://assets1.pitchforkmedia.com/images/original/52047.topleybirdbluegod.jpg
Martina's MySpace (http://www.myspace.com/martinatopleybird)
Pitchfork's Review (http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/record_review/51287-martina-topley-bird-the-blue-god)
BBC Music Review of the Album (http://www.bbc.co.uk/music/release/vcn8/)

I have to thank TonyWonder for getting me into this record. I will say that, aside from some hiccups, this album is stellar. I put up the Pitchfork review because, even though it's not glowering, it's a reference point for you to draw your own opinion. It's a marvelous trip-hop record that, in light of releases from Portishead, Morcheeba, Bitter:Sweet, Supreme Beings of Leisure and Martina's baby daddy, Tricky, has been buried in the mix. Damn shame, pick it up, put it on, chill out, and enjoy. Honestly I think Pitchfork is just pissed off that she didn't just do trip-hop songs on the record and (because of Amy Winehouse, Duffy, Lily Allen, etc.) took exception to her usage of retro-soul stylings on a few tracks. Songs to listen to: "Valentine", "Baby Blue", "Carnies", "Something to Say".

Pacific UV - Longplay, vol. 2
http://assets1.pitchforkmedia.com/images/original/45554.pacificuv.jpg
Pacific UV's MySpace (http://www.myspace.com/pacificuv)
Pitchfork's Record Review (http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/record_review/48867-longplay-2)

The thing I find funny about this record not being raved about is that: a. it's a shoegaze record, b. it's got epic, Sigur Ros-like tracks that flow between states of Spiritualized-liked serenity and My Bloody Valentine-esque freneticism, c. it's got a deer on the cover. C's worked for Interpol and Kosheen, why not Pacific UV? Anyway, I couldn't fucking find another review for this record, but it really ought to be on people's minds. It's another record I found earlier in the year, thought would catch on, but clearly hasn't. Tracks to listen to include "The Alarmist", "Tremolo", "Orson", "Need", "Something Told Us".

The Sleeping Years - We're Becoming Islands One By One
http://www.drownedinsound.com/images/38490.jpeg
The Sleeping Years' MySpace (http://www.myspace.com/thesleepingyears)
Drowned In Sound Record Review (http://www.drownedinsound.com/articles/3463630)
BBC Music's Review (http://www.bbc.co.uk/music/release/rbrg/)

So... The lead singer sounds exactly like the lead singer from the Mountain Goats... Yeah, make of that what you will. But I think you should give the Sleeping Years a chance. There are some undeniably catchy songs on this record, and even though the lead singer doesn't manage the heightened yelp associated with his lyrical style, he still manages to sing pretty. The arrangements REALLY help liven up the songs. Songs to listen to: "You and Me Against the World" (one of the best songs of the year, IMO), "Setting Fire to Sleepy Towns", "Broken Homes", "Clocks and Clones", "Islands".

Go ahead and post your own recommendations of underrated records thus far this year. As for what qualifies as "underrated", use you're own judgment.

Kelley Polar - I Need You To Hold On While the Sky Is Falling

Currently my favorite album of 2008 and will probably make the top of my list. I cant think of anything that is scheduled to come out in the next 4 months that could take its place. Unless Massive Attack releases an album.

If anyone owns the Portishead set from Coachella, they will say that it is one of the best releases of the year.

But right now, I'm saying Killing For God by Dr. Know.

I do not understand the premise of this thread. Who gives a fuck how much other people like or dislike music you like? It seems stupid to me, this whole "underrated" or "overrated" thing.

Anyway The Hold Steady own 2008 so far.

You guys are killing me here. Opeth is the best current metal band, IMO. Although Mastodon, Lamb of God, and Down deserve some consideration.

That's tricky. I wouldn't label them metal, necessarily. In fact I wouldn't give them a genre at all. They are a force unto themselves.

How old are you? I don't even like Opeth but they're much better than all that pre pubescent nu-metal you just named off, besides Machinehead who had one decent album not great.

They call themselves Metal so I go with what the artist says, but I do agree they are running a very fine line on many genres.

devildriver nu-metal?
ok your really smart.

and MACHINE HEAD (two words) has great albums.
I just like trivium more than Opeth.

And one more band, Meshuggah.
They are light years better than Opeth so don't say they are the best metal band as of now.

Devildriver sucks and is nu metal just cause it came a lot later doesn't mean it isn't the same bullshit. Oh and so sorry I forgot a space between Machine and Head. Either way those are all terrible examples, I don't like Opeth but they are definitely better than any of those. Like I posted before if you're going to listen to current Metal there is only one band BORIS

Nu-Metal is "jump the fuck up" ex. Limp Bizkit.
Unless you mean new as in when they came out, ok fine.
But if not, DevilDriver is almost thrash at times.

And by the way, Down is better than Boris.
Even though I'll agree that I like Boris.

Trivium sucks. Meshuggah and DevilDriver are both great, but listen to Deliverance and Blackwater Park and then tell me that Opeth isn't in a fucking league of their own in terms of musicality and pure ferocity.

Do you like Chef Boyardee as well?

Hey now, Down is a great fucking band just like Boris.

08-13-2008, 02:06 AM
I'm completely with Down Rodeo on this one, Opeth is absolutely fucking awesome. Ever since Blackwater Park came out they've been not only one of my favorite metal bands, but one of my favorite bands period. Yes, those were three terrible examples by Memorial-7 (Machine head is good but nothing close to Opeth.) Nu-metal is essentially metal with rapping vocals so no devildriver isn't nu-metal, but it's new metal. There are plenty of great black metal bands that you guys aren't mentioning. Also, Nachtmystium is extremely underrated.

I did like Blackwater Park and only that album. And Opeth is unique whatever, doesn't mean I like them. And Meshuggah is also in a league of their own.

Dude, all three of Down's albums have been great. The first is amazing, the second is very good but different, and their latest is some of the best straight-up metal I've heard in recent years.

I can comment on Boris only so far as their album Pink, which is the only one of theirs I have. It fucking slays, but I can't quite classify it as metal. Let me hear more of their stuff and then I can argue this more eloquently.

P.S. The Sword rocks fucking faces.
