not one show in the windsor-quebec corridor?!
who the fuck booked this tour?
nothing in montreal, laval, quebec city, ottawa, misassauga, hamilton, toronto...

the closest is detroit.

either some tour manager forgot about a corridor of about 13 million people, or there's an extension coming

Are you guys just going because it's Metallica? Dont get me wrong, I love all of their albums, even St. Anger because it was the first one that I began listening to. (Unfortunately) Now obviously, anything before the Loaded Album is an instant favorite of mine, and I'm kind of lookin forward to the new shit.
But c'mon, it's METALLICA. they suck live. I saw them in 03 with the summer sanitarium tour thingy, it was a descent show, but there was like 75,000 people there and we were like a mile a way from stage.
Then i saw them opening up for the Stones a few years ago in San Fran and they sucked, and i've seen them at the Bridge School Benefit and it sucked then too.
If i get free tickets Ill go but I'm not sure if it's worth the money-maybe seeing them on their own headlining tour and not a festival type thing it will be diff?

to each their own...

ive seen metallica 7 times and they have kicked ass every time... saw them open for the stones and they did a solid set with a crowd that was not theirs...

I'm thinking about going to the October 23rd show here in Albuquerque. I really enjoyed their set at Bonnaroo. That was mostly because they played 1 song post-1991. "One" and "Fade To Black" were the highlights. I'm wondering if I got that great setlist just because it was a huge music festival. Also, The Sword is probably my favorite metal band. That might tilt it in favor of me going. Good call with the shitty venues comment, Tingley is really horrible.

Oakland and SF are next door to each other...

08-11-2008, 03:27 PM
most initial tour dates keep slots open for possible add-ons. i think they will do a second leg sfchrissy and then do sacramento and san jose..

the metallica/rage show is dead... it was a proposal but they decided to do some u.k shows before they go all out in the u.s.

im planning on going to oakland for sure. maybe fresno and maybe the tour opener since my brothers lives in phoenix!

plus METALLICA-LAMB OF GOD0 THE SWORD is a kick ass 1-2-3!!

I'll be at the Oracle Arena show in the mean streets of Oakland.

Too bad we get Lamb Of God for direct support. I rather have Down.

October 23 thru November 23-Down
December 1 thru December 20-Lamb Of God
January 12 2009 thru January 31 2009-Machine Head

Please Please Please Metallica Do "Eye Of The Beholder" off "..And Justice For All". Arent you guys tired of playing "Master Of Puppets"?

Which is the smaller the Ontario arena or Cox? I'm going to whichever one is smaller, if I get tickets. I'm sure these won't sell as fast as Radiohead did though. Lamb of God is extremely hit or miss live. I've seen them several times and you wouldn't believe the range in quality. They put on one of the worst shows I've ever seen once, and one of the best shows I've ever seen.

for Lamb of God, start with Ashes of the Wake... great cd, their 1st cd with a more polished sound.... As The Palaces Burn is another great cd, a little more raw.... I've seen the real metallica...pre-load(of shit) tour. nothing compares. they just continue to butcher their old songs on tour and nothing they've done to this point even comes close to being as good as the Black album, which was their worst album to date until load came out.

Most of it sounds like all the drivel that came out in the Wake of the great Metallica/Slayer/Exodus wave.

What isn't just unoriginal is actually total shit. James needs to realize that he can't sing.

There had to be some huge payoff, marketing scheme for St.Anger, like they wrote the review for it, and supplied it to every music related media outlet...everything I read said,"St. Anger is a return to their glory days, or blah, blah, they're thrashing again, this should please old school fans, it's a return to Metallica's roots" ....everything I read, and it was all absolute bullshit

Consequence of Sound:
Album Review: Death Magnetic
By Jay Ziegler on September 5th, 2008

In the wake of what has become a musical circus for one of the biggest releases of this year, the legendary San Francisco heavy metal quartet that is Metallica has blown expectations off the map with an atom bomb of magnificence. Much like Heath Ledger’s diabolical performance of the Joker in The Dark Knight, Metallica’s Death Magnetic faced the gauntlets of harsh criticism before the final product took hold. The laughs belong in Metallica’s back pockets, however, because not only has the Los Angeles based band put out its best album since 1988’s …And Justice For All, Lars Ulrich and company have also erased the harsh stripping of their heavy metal identity and reclaimed the throne of metal’s global diplomats.

Making his debut on the record, bassist Robert Trujillo certainly makes his presence known. With no disrespect to former bassist Jason Newsted, Trujillo’s presence fills in right where the legendary Cliff Burton (untimely) left off. As a Metallica fan, there’s no denying Burton’s late influence and on Death Magnetic, Trujillo certainly fills in some gigantic shoes. As a result of this kindred spirit returning to form, the other members have fallen in line, most notably James Hetfield. From the get go, with the album opener “That Was Just Your Life”, the subtle heartbeat and gloomy overtones kick into one of the quartet’s heaviest handed numbers since …And Justice For All’s “Blackened.” With that old school, size thirteen boot kick to the head, Metallica prove to the doubters to back off and choke on their own thoughts. Hetfield’s vocals are finely tuned, mature, commanding and the most melodic he’s been since the early days. This isn’t an 80’s throwback by any stretch, but the sound of a mature band moving forward and rediscovering its past.

Hetfield and Hammett trade off hammer-on/pull-off riffs reminiscent of “Blackened” but with a much more sinister chagrin. Ulrich’s drums sound improved, and unlike the critical nadir that was 2003’s St. Anger, the drummer comes out with both fists swinging and sounds a hundred times better. With all its cylinders kicking, the best thing the band did was reintroduce the guitar solo, and Kirk Hammett has never shredded better than here. While lost on St. Anger, the solos come out cutting aluminum cans in half and certainly puts the man back on the top of his game. Clocking in at a lengthy 7:08, “This Was Just Your Life” gets the blood flowing, but as they always say… it’s only just the beginning.

Up next is the equally lengthy and bone crushing “The End Of The Line.” With double stops, crushing groove metal riffs and meaty power chords similar to that of Pearl Jam’s “Animal”, Metallica has reinvented the wheel of what their legacy is all about. In other words, they’ve created their first progressive-rock record. With the chorus ringing loud and clear (”Hooked into this deceiver/Need more and more/Into the endless fever/Need more and more/New consequence machine/Burn through all your gasoline/Asylum overtime/Never mind/You reach the end of the line”), the fearsome foursome have divulged into a newer plateau of musical metaphor, much like they explored on Master Of Puppets. Hetfield’s and Hammett’s interluded guitar harmonies cry, thrash and bring all of those good feelings back, as if discovering a long lost friend, who’s also on the same page.

The only complaint thus far is Ulrich’s snare drum. From time to time, it’s a bit hot in the mix, but unlike the metal folding chair timbre of the band’s previous works, this one fits in nicely with the album, especially on “Broken, Beat & Scarred.” Much like the other two songs, crunchy riffs, Hammett’s leads and a growling Trujillo bass rattle and roll all over this tune and push the heavy metal locomotive forward with powerful steam. Just like Ozzy Osbourne once said, these three songs are “going off the rails of a crazy train.” The first single, “The Day That Never Comes” sounds like a toss-up of some of the band’s earlier works, most notably “Fade To Black” and “The Unforgiven.” Hetfield’s subtle arpeggios and Hammett’s melodic leads paint a beautifully woven, electrical canvas for the quartet to explore and take full advantage of. As mentioned before, the musical complexity of this record hasn’t been matched in almost twenty years and for a first single, “The Day That Never Comes” brings to the table different walks of life that all work together. Thrash metal chords, dual harmonies, double bass… the musical grab bag is all here for the taking and heavy metal’s forefathers bring it back with style. Even the most cynical minded metalheads can’t argue with the production value. Rick Rubin’s impeccable work ethic has definitely paid off, with Metallica taking the full fruits of the labor. Instead of a potentially disastrous eight minute single, riddled with bullet holes, we get a perfectly constructed cast of musical iron; indestructible and strong.

One of the album’s highlights (and should-be potential single), “All Nightmare Long”, sounds like a throwback to the early 90’s riffage and raucous rock and roll. Hetfield hits some impressive notes vocally and anchors the song with strong, confident delivery. The chorus of this tune is possibly one of the catchiest things they’ve written in the past ten years.

‘Cause we hunt you down without mercy
Hunt you down all nightmare long
Feel us breathe upon your face
Feel us shift, every move we trace
Hunt you down without mercy
Hunt you down all nightmare long, yeah
Luck. Runs.

Needless to say, Hetfield’s swagger, Ulrich’s rhythmic groove and the power muted, accommodating chords make this treasure trove of a tune amazing. No, really… they’re back. This also continues on their second single “Cyanide.” The band gobs firebomb after firebomb of musical winners. They make it look easy, and regardless, this is a very strong album, and by far one of 2008’s best and possibly this decade. With that being said, there has to be one flaw in the machine, and the Achilles’ heel of this whole album is “The Unforgiven III.” While it is a slower departure from the band’s typical thrash efforts, it feels sandwiched for the sake of being sandwiched. Fitting between “Cyanide” and the mega-epic “The Judas Kiss”, it falls in the cracks musically. To be fair, it is a good song, but does carry the stigma of the weakest track on the record and doesn’t match up to par with the other tracks.

Death Magnetic ends with an apocalyptic one-two- three punch with the ultra crushing “The Judas Kiss”, their first instrumental in twenty years (and longest song recorded ever at 9:56), “Suicide & Redemption” and the third single, the appropriately titled “My Apocalypse.” With the storybook ending intact, Metallica chose to conquer Goliath with three guitars and a drum kit. They did the unthinkable and came out on top of the mountain with one of the heaviest albums in years. The music surpasses the hype and defines a new generation of Metallica army recruits. That’s the great thing about this record, it’s quite a paradox. Every song here could be a potential single, even though the average length of the song is about seven minutes. Crazy, but appropriate.

Enough of my yakking, go listen to the damn thing already. It’s beyond worth it!

While I love the RHCP, and the records they have done with Rick. I would love it if they switched up and got a new more funkier producer, and tried to recapture their 80's ska, funk, punk, blend.

ok, so i just listened to My Apocalypse and All Nightmare Long....you guys like this? really?? i'll admit it tops all the records from load to present...but now they're just trying to mimick the current metal sound...still doesn't sound like metallica, other than it's james' voice.

content-wise: lyrics are not very creative, lars still can't drum, james' voice is meh, most of the guitar licks are pretty generic, kirk gets a few little decent solos in but not much...the closest they get to a true metallica sound is a few riffs in My Apocalypse that sound like their ripped straight from And Justice for All. C+ at best. people just give them extra points cause it's "Metallica".

*edit* paulb: - faxman and i are going to be in vegas for NIN as well! just noticed your sig... that's gonna be a sick show! it'd be cool to meet up before the show, if you're interested.

Why do people want bands to do the same thing for their entire career?

it's not that i want them to re-release album after album that sounds just like the last. but i do expect bands to continue on an upward swing or at least maintain a level of quality that they became known for, rather than be inconsistant like metallica has for their last 5 or however many albums they've had since load.

plus, their sound is so different from what they were, it's like they are a different band altogether. if they had been playing this type of music from the beginning, metallica wouldn't haven't gotten as big as they did.

I tried to give them chances, but I can't foresee a moment in my life when i will ever put anything from them after the Black Album(and that's even pushing it, Justice is usually the cutoff point for me)

Because some bands have a sound that just defines them and makes them them

simple as that, it's good to vary everything once in a while (depending on the band) but it's mostly good just to stick with what you know

i look forward to following the setlists nightly... if Sad But True, has to played, im glad its early... get it out of the way... Four Horsemen and Fight Fire With Fire will be awesome to hear... Last Caress and So What are filler...change that up to Blitzkrieg and another cover... Seek needs to be retired for Dyers or Damage....

its all good... fairly good setlist... cant wait to see it develop over the months.

Last Caress is filler? You kidding me man!? Of all of Metallica's covers, that one is my favorite.

Ok. I lied. Whiskey In the Jar is my favorite. But I still wanna hear Last Caress.

i was at yesterdays show in Phoenix. great stage show. sound was good in the seats but we had pit tickets. the sound on the floor was horrible. first time i was disappointed in having pit tickets. they are playing in the round and the way the speakers are arranged, the sound goes over the heads of the people with pit tickets. oh well, it was only metallica and it was free!

Filming these shows for the 3D movie is my best guess. Metallica curated festival...

Wow, theyre being VERY classy by doing this in Atlantic City. Did Trump pay them a bunch of money? How hard is it to try and do this in their own backyard?

What are you talking about? They just played 4 nights in SF. You want another 2 day festival in SF? Can't wait to hear who will be opening these shows...

METALLICA IS THROWING A TWO-DAY FESTIVAL IN ATLANTIC CITY THIS SUMMER...

What we do know: a two-day Metallica festival is set for June 22 & 23 in Atlantic City, and due to be announced this afternoon. Many bands are playing.

What we don't know: everything else. We will update as soon as we find out more information. An announcement is set for 2PM EST, today.

You mean like how Wilco does their festival in N. Adams Massachusetts and Pearl Jam had their festival in Wisconsin?

OK then.

I still like Metallica but I won't go out of my way for them. If they are in Chicago, of course I'll go. if they are at a fest I'm at, of course I'll see them. Proud of them for taking a chance with the metalheads and getting a pretty diverse lineup though. You know the die hards are going to be bitching about the lineup.

wow hahaha. I thought you were joking with those bands for a second but interesting lineup for sure! I was expecting this to be a dirtbag metalfest, but I'm somewhat intrigued especially Hot Snakes & Modest Mouse!!!!! This seems less about feeding Metallica's ginourmous egos and more about bringing a greater spotlight to some other worthy bands.

ps Only one question...Best Coast?! haha I can't wait to see people's reaction to their set.
