So say's Billboard....

http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/news/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003832786

Alicia Keys and the White Stripes' Jack White will record the theme song to "Quantum of Solace," the 22nd James Bond film, which hits U.S. theaters Nov. 7.

The song, "Another Way To Die," will be the first duet in Bond soundtrack history. White wrote and produced the song, and also will play drums. The soundtrack to the movie will be released Oct. 28.

I think most of the board here knows my undying love for all things JW, and Alicia Keys has a nice set of pipes. And he fucking wrote the song!! Also, I've never heard him play drums before even though that was his first instrument.

ok ok, discuss!

edit: I also remember reading an interview with Keys back when she was promoting her last album, she said how her and JW really wanted to work together but just couldn't get it to happen (Thanks Entertainment Weekly!). I'm so thrilled they found the time. JW just loves to work his ass off

I think it's a crazy enough pairing that it could work. Sure as hell will be better than Cornell's shitfest of a song for Casino Royale. I honestly cannot even remmeber that fucking song, I just thought it was a steaming turd

I'm interested in the Jack White portion of the story, but feel that Alicia Keys has a truly weak, thin sounding voice and is the beneficiary of much studio wizardry and slick packaging/promotion

08.22.08 // MORE ON THE JAMES BOND THEME

From rollingstone.com:

"Jack White has finally given some insight into his James Bond theme collaboration with Alicia Keys . Discussing “Another Way to Die,” the theme for the upcoming Quantum of Solace , White said “After a couple of years of wanting to collaborate with Alicia Keys , it took James Bond himself to finally make it happen. Alicia put some electric energy into her breath that cemented itself into the magnetic tape. Very inspiring to watch.” White went on to say that the famed Memphis Horns, as well as some of “Nashville's finest,” were also involved in the recording. “We wanted to push soul into those tapes, and join the family of Barry, Bassey, Connery and Craig,” White said, referring to Bond actors and composers of the past."

because i know you all care about this.

per Pitchfork:

Jack White wants you to know that he had nothing to do with the decision to use his music in that James Bond-themed Coke Zero ad we reported about on Friday. Here's the statement from his management:
"Jack White was commissioned by Sony Pictures to write a theme song for the James Bond film Quantum of Solace, not for Coca-Cola. Any other use of the song is based on decisions made by others, not by Jack White. We are disappointed that you first heard the song in a co-promotion for Coke Zero, rather than in its entirety."

sbessiso
09-15-2008, 09:17 PM
Cuz he didn't do this song specifically for a coke ad like the other one (which is a delightful little tune by the way). He plays by his rules, but still, if he's doing the fucking theme song for the new James Bond film he should kinda expect something like this. What, are they supposed to get his permission everytime they want to use it? No way

I'm also beginning to wonder if he's singing in the new song or if its all Alicia and he just produced it/played drums and whatnot. I hope he has some vocals!!

he only did one, didn't he? and as far as I understood it was never even aired. I'm not sure how it made it on you youtube.

I could be mistaken, but perhaps he got upset with them and that's why the ad never aired. or they decided to not air it and he got offended. all possibilities.

clumsy342
09-18-2008, 06:37 PM
parts of it do. like the first 30-40 seconds.
but overall it just sounds like a mess to me. Almost like it should either be Jack White OR Alicia Keys singing.. not both of them.
I don't know.. it just sounds cheesy and kind of embarassing.

But...look at the recent Bond themes. That TERRIBLE Chirs Cornell song that I heard once and instantly forgot. The madonna one that I personally liked a lot but whatever. Then wasn't it like Sheryl Crow or something?

Sure not the best Bond theme (hard to top Duran Duran :)) but it might be the best one in quite awhile

Boourns
09-19-2008, 06:11 AM
The song Pulp did for a Bond theme was a hundred times better than the Sheryl Crow stinker that ended up being used instead.

sbessiso
09-19-2008, 06:13 AM
What movie was that for? Pulp did a song for it? I honestly cannot remember the Crow song but I remember not liking it. I'm just think the Brosnan movies on, I think Tina Turner did one, that one was probably OK (cannot remember). Didn't Garbage do one?

what do you think of "Another Way to Die"?

Boourns
09-19-2008, 06:19 AM
Tomorrow Never Dies/Lies

And yes, Garbage did "The World Is Not Enough." I miss Garbage. Really liked their first two albums back in the day, not so much everything since. Good live show.

I need to hear "Another Way to Die" more.

But...look at the recent Bond themes. That TERRIBLE Chirs Cornell song that I heard once and instantly forgot. The madonna one that I personally liked a lot but whatever. Then wasn't it like Sheryl Crow or something?

OH GOD. I had forgotten about that one. fuck. I wish I had still forgotten about it.

last few, reverse chronological order:

Jack White/Alicia Keys - Another Way To Die
Something to be forgotten
Madonna - Die Another Day
Garbage - The World Is Not Enough
Sheryl Crow - Tomorrow Never Dies
Tina Turner - Goldeneye

yeah I guess it's been a bit mediocre for a while. I did like the garbage and madonna ones though.

and the Pulp song was 100% unofficial. they produced it for the film, it wasn't used, they renamed it from 'dies' to 'lies'. according to wiki st etienne also wrote a unused title track for that film, which pierce brosnan kept the master tape too. fascinating. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Bond_music#Official_Main_Title_Themes

Alicia Keys and Jack White - Another Way to Die Lyrics

JW: I know the player with the slick trigger finger for Her Majesty
AK: Another one with the golden tone voice and then your fantasy
JW: Another bill from a killer turned a thrill into a tragedy

CHORUS:
A door left open
A woman walking by
A drop in the water
A look in the eye
A phone on the table
A man on your side
Someone that you think that you can trust is just
Another way to die

JW: Another tricky little gun giving solace to the one that will never see the sunshine
AK: Another inch of your life sacrificed for your brother in the nick of time
JW: Another dirty money, heaven sent honey turning on a dime

[CHORUS]

It’s just another way to…

Hey…

It’s just another way to…

You’ve got to….

JW: Another girl with her finger on the world singing do what you wanna hear
AK: Another gun thrown down and surrendered took away your fear
JW & AK: Another man that stands right behind you looking in the mirror

[CHORUS]

It’s just another way…

Suit ‘em up, bang bang!

Bang, bang, bang, bang.

the video is ALRIGHT, I was really hoping for something with a storyline and JW jumping from explosions. I kinda got bored half way through but he's ridiculously hot behind the drum kit. The song and video suck. I love James Bond films (am more fan of the gadgets than the themes/soundtrack) but I'm least excited on this ever since I heard JW & AK (both overrateds IMO) are doing the theme. Too bad for me since the last Bond (Casino Royale) kicked ass.
