So, Grizzly Bear are debuting Two Weeks on Letterman tonight. For you East Coast people who saw it, how was it? For west coast people, you ready? While You Wait For the Others is still my favorite song this year, and the two blog posts I've read have said this one is even better. I've not been this excited for a single song ever, as far as I can recall. Grizzly Bear are so great.

I'd prefer the new Department Of Eagles album to be finished before more Grizzly Bear, but what do i know?

When I talked to Dan in January, he said that was almost done then, so I bet it's done at this point. What I really want is for Dan to do a small tour with Dept. of Eagles. But, Grizz are, in my opinion, probably the best new band of the past 5 years. I see them getting huge.

sonofhal

Not too small i hope. I'd like to see DOE play over here. Unfortunately my only Grizzly Bear live experience was the Coachella one, which just didn't thrill me at all.

bmack86
07-23-2008, 11:29 PM
I enjoyed that show, but it was my 4th Grizzly Bear show, so I had experience and had fun with a show that wasn't quite as amazing. See them on their own, preferably at a venue with great sound. The Disney Concert hall show this year was perfection.

I liked it, and I will now be at their set instead of Cat Power at LOLLA.

bmack86
07-23-2008, 11:40 PM
I liked it, not as good as While You Wait for the Others, but that would be expecting quite a bit. It's the first Grizzly Bear song I can think of without a guitar line in it; also, that's the first time i've ever seen Chris Bear perform with a Bass Drum. Interesting changes. I really liked the chorus section. It reminded me of the 50s.

cat power/ grizzly bear conflict, ouch. either should be good.

Grizzly Bear, no brainer. They are so much better live than on record.

Sushov23
07-23-2008, 11:45 PM
yeah after seeing that letterman performace, and you talking about it. I am taking it as a sign that i'm supposed to see them. I'll get to Cat Power eventually, I hear she doesn't do so good in festival settings.

bmack86
07-23-2008, 11:47 PM
I haven't seen her on her own since 2003, but her live show has never been amazing. She is decent, but nothing to really phone home over. At least she doesn't leave the stage anymore, like she did when I saw her in 04.

woogie846
07-23-2008, 11:50 PM
I'll put it on the DVR.

Sushov23
07-23-2008, 11:51 PM
yeah my friend saw her in SD a few years ago, she told me she cussed the crowd out, and walked out after 20 minutes or something. Everyone got a refund. She got mad over something stupid too, she just didn't remember what Chan go mad about.

woogie846

I was little nervous two years ago when Cat Power opened up for the Flaming Lips, especially since it was a week after one of her incidents, but she was fine.

The song is very Grizzly Bear, and is exactly what I hoped the first single from this album would sound like (read: not overly poppy, hinting at an album full of Two Weeks's.)

That last little guitar bit is magical, the band doing what they do best.

You guys been saying Berkeley Greek is 100x better than LA Greek so come to Radio City show which is Monday after ATP weekend! The acoustics inside Radio City is great so I'm sure they'll sound better than an outdoor venue;)

I dont know what brought on all your misgivings about the greek la but I was there 3 times last summer and each night the sound was spot on. The only qualm you could have is it getting quiet quickly as you get to the side section and B or C, but you'll be set in A or the pit.

Bryan has been going to shows a lot longer than you have, so his experiences there could be hit or miss? You notice most of us that are older avoid the place cause we know better? Sit one show in the back and let me know how it is for you ok?

New song rules. This album may save 2012 for me. Everything else this year (for the most part) has been meh.

bmack86
06-07-2012, 03:40 PM
It's really shitty that a venue has good sound for only a limited amount of tickets. And I hate the stacked parking bullshit. Plus, of the seven shows I've seen there, the sound was fucked up for four of them, with really overdone bass washing out the treble and midrange (surprise, the one band that didn't get screwed by the sound there was the White Stripes.) The fact that the sound is so spotty, combined with the horrible access situation just makes me stay away. Yes, I know you can park in Los Feliz and walk up, but I don't really want to hike a mile uphill to avoid parking fees if I still have to drive anyway. The hike is tolerable for the bowl because you can ride the metro and not worry about drinking and driving, but the Greek doesn't present that option. And some of their facilities are pretty run down (the bathroom at B section was so gross last time I was there.)

Basically, fuck the Greek. I've resigned to missing just about anyone I'd want to see who is playing there.

cutterbutter

Dude I've sat in the back quiet a few time when I won free tickets from the scenestar or similar. When I think about it Atmosphere was actually very loud last August but they likely didnt obey the sound ordinance limitations.

This discussion has come up before among all of us. At least 3 times since I've been on here regularly. I've noticed. It's not questioning anyone's "experience", it was an action of discussing RECENT experiences there if they have perhaps changed since Bryan (or anyone) has given up on the place.

Why take the time to make the distinctions you do? Just because you can get a word in doesn't mean it's worth while.

They wrote this more collaboratively than the last album, at least vocally. I'm a really big fan on first listen, but that was expected. They've taken another step forward, but not as drastic a change as between the last albums.

TallGuyCM
08-31-2012, 04:03 AM
After a few spins, I like it a lot overall. Some of these songs are among the band's best, except for two songs in particular that are some pretty serious head-scratchers. A Simple Answer sounds like the song from Peanuts a little, not sure what they were trying for with that one, and gun-shy sounds like Ed trying to do his version of the whole Ariel Pink/Destroyer easy listening sound and I'm not convinced it works that well. But then the album finishes amazingly strong with Half Gate and the incredible Sun in Your Eyes, and all is redeemed.

Much, much more will open up over repeated listens obviously, but I haven't noticed a lot of the harmonies on this album that have been so wonderful about the band's output up until now.

Depends of whether you want to sit or stand. Pit gets you closer to the stage, but a really close center sec A ticket is pretty great. I am currently holding Section A Row Q tickets, but I got a deal from a boardie.

I've listened to it front to back near 10 times now, and although I still can't get into The Simple Answer or gun-shy, I've begun to appreciate them for what they are and just let it be. I understand those two songs are likely them trying to push their sound, and I can respect that even if the result is that they're more or less misfires. gun-shy is definitely this album's Cheerleader, what with the eery Chris Taylor vocals in the chorus and what not.

And aside from those two songs, this album is a near perfect cross section of the two albums that preceded it - combining elements of the spare, orchestral beauty of Yellow House with the explosive bombast of Veckatimest. I can't wait to hear it all live in a mere month!

I've listened to it a couple times, and it's extremely fucking good, but hasn't clicked with me entirely yet. However, Half Gate-Sun in your Eyes is such a great pair of closing songs. I suspect this will really grow on me as a whole though.

I really don't understand how you can dislike those two songs.

I do like the ending to The Simple Answer a lot, that last minute and half or so is incredible. The rest of it sounds like the Peanuts song with the Gary Glitter/Black Keys drums. And like I mentioned before, the whole neo easy listening vibe of gun-shy doesn't sit with me well. I'm not the only one who feels this way, I've had conversations with a few others who agree on all counts.

Gun-shy was awkward on first listen, but now it's a song I look forward to when it comes up. It's a momentary departure from what I would expect in terms of growth. I couldn't listen to an album with that direction, but one song is perfect. This album is definitely a feast.

I feel the burn of waiting to purchase Grizzly Bear tickets at The Greek, but couldn't they have picked somewhere else? Anywhere else??

Yeah, Gun-Shy has a weird vocal sound to me as well (and the music is also not working for me with that fluffy keys line). "Neo easy-listening" is not only apt, but rather funny too. And, thank Mohammed that they didn't make an entire album in that direction! Ha...you also nailed it on Simple Answer, Chris..."Peanuts song"....that's fucking rich. At least the vocals are a little more tolerable on this to make it more interesting live.

Having said that...I think this LP has also lept to my top spot. I need to revisit some of my earlier favorites to feel convinced of this, but it certainly is pulling me in hard. Speaking in Rounds is going to be so fucking great live!

This is what I picture when I hear it.

Good thing they're still playing On a neck, On a spit:) I actually listened to their new album for the first time on NPR last night and was very impressed. I think this is their best produced release yet and I can't wait to see them @ Radio City next week!

I've caught up on this album several times now, and this is right on. Those last two songs are just so good.

This is a great piece...

You will rarely hear an indie act complain about piracy; if they’re successful enough to care, they achieved that success in an ecosystem built on piracy from the get-go. But Droste will say that paying $9 for a digital download of an act’s new album—the price of “a fucking appetizer, a large popcorn at the movie theater, and you’ll have it forever, and they took two years to make it”—matters more than people seem to think, and not just in terms of income. “Maybe they’ll get on the radio. Every record sold shows the industry your value.” Meanwhile, streaming the album from a service like Spotify nets the musicians almost irrelevantly small amounts.

They were fantastic tonight! I got a lot of good video, including "Knife" during their encore! What a GREAT show. My god.
I'll post video as soon as I upload it, clean it up, boost the audio, etc..

Seems like a similar setlist, but the encore which I caught on video from the front of the stage was:
Knife
On a Neck, On a Spit
All We Ask

Man, there are really some strong tracks on Daniel Rossen's EP from earlier this year. If they had replaced A Simple Answer and Gun-Shy with Silent Song and Golden Mile, Shields would have been a nearly perfect album in my book.

Final concert of the tour; probably the best live show I saw last year, just an incredible live act:

Pappy and Harriets ruined what should have been a great set by them last year before Coachella. I have soured so much on Pappy's as a venue for music. I love the place, but the sound is the shittiest ever.

Nice interview with Daniel Rossen:)

The material you’re writing now, is that earmarked for maybe another solo EP, or maybe something with the Department of Eagles or Grizzly Bear down the line? Or is too early to say?

It’s probably too early to say. I don’t really have a plan. We just got done touring Shields a few months ago. And that was like, over a year of playing the same set, essentially, and I think we all are going to spend some time doing our own thing for a while. And I don’t really know what that means for me. I might do a record of my own, it’s a possibility, but at the moment I’m kind of just trying to write music again and play music in a way that feels fulfilling and is enjoyable, and not really think about it too much beyond that.
