Frats are horrifying. Large groups of people bound together to pay for friends to drink with. If you have to buy friends, you need to work on lots of things. And, the networking card that so many people pull? Network in a less douchebag way. You can meet people without being paddled by them, I promise.

the dues part i guess kinda sucked, but i guess it was necessary to pay for the house, the parties, and the banquets n such...
i get the feeling that when people hear the word "fraternity" they think of Ted McGinley giving Robert Carradine a wedgie...

Know what else gives you access to a 24/7 party house? Being a fun person. Then people want to party with you and you don't have to go through an initiation. Or being a drug dealer.
I used to love when we'd just move into a frat house part of the crew was associated with and take over the fucking place for a month or so. Then once the heat started to come to the house, we'd move on and they'd be left trying to explain themselves.

I think fraternities get a bad rap. They're only as good or as bad as the people that join them. Some fraternities in college had kind of nerdy dudes (not Revenge of the Nerds type shit, but still) and were nice for the people that were in them. I think some people kind of innocently join a fraternity because it seems like a good idea to be a part of something when you're away from home for the first time and the mentality gets to them. The men bring out the meathead in one another. I've known good people that got roped into fraternities, though. They come out alright on the other side - it's just kind of a pussy way to acclimate yourself to college.

By the same token, I think hate groups get a bad rap. They don't really have to be bad--it's all just a matter of who joins them. Also armies get a bad rap. There's nothing that says that a person who voluntarily decides to put his life and others' lives at risk--or even worse and more likely, intent to destroy--HAS to be a bad person. They could just be patriotic. Of course patriotism is the justification behind almost all the greatest atrocities of humaity.
The very concept of seeking--NEEDING--to be a part of a group of other men, not chosen because they are special characters deserving of company but chosen because they belong to a collective social club rooted in binge-drinking, date rape, and general stupidity is exactly why they're horrible. If you need acceptance that badly and indiscriminately than you were never worthwhile to begin with. And the perpetuation of "frat boy" practices like quasi-rape, kegstands, homphobia, racism, etc. is about as forgivable as the Republican smear tactics a la Karl Rove.

I'll never join a frat. I never understood why people go through the tough work and hazing just so they can call someone they don't even know their brother.
I'm a freshman in college, and a few of my friends are doing frats and sororities. They claim that they "want to meet people" and "network". But seriously, you ask any frat at my school what their "purpose" is, and they'll say "good grades and having a good time!". If they don't say that, they're probably lying.
I don't need to join a frat to network or meet people or make new friends. There are plenty of other ways to do that.

Having been through four years of extreme partying at college, I can honestly say that I have met and gotten fucked up with numerous frat guys, and not ALL of them are retarded idiots (definitely a lot of "those guys", though). It depends on the frat; Delta Chi = rich kids, Pikes = date rape, and so on and so forth. However, these guys are making the personal choice to do it. I don't criticize beta for not joining one, just like I don't criticize Arthur for being in one. I personally could not care less; if I don't like the way you act, I won't hang out with you, and I hold everybody (frat or not) to that rule. But in college, if you put yourself out there and make a point to meet friends, you don't need a frat. I knew not a single soul when I went to college, and and 7 or 8 years later, I still hang out with and talk to the guys I met freshman year. I've never had trouble making friends, but still, I can't criticize someone for doing what they like, just like they can fuck off if they try to judge me for doing what I like.

4 is actually the "already nearing the bottom of the hill" mark. Anything more than 2 is kinda useless I've found. 36 hours can be productive and useful, but then there needs to be sleep or nothing constructive is done.

Oh, and people in fraternities, sororities, organized sports, organized militaries or militias, political parties, sports fans with favorite teams, fan clubs, social clubs, basically any organized membership of socializing--except for, like, darts leagues in bars maybe--are jerkoffs. Not saying there aren't occasional exceptions, but as a general solid rule, they are jerkoffs. And I've NEVER met a frat boy who wasn't a total fucking douchebag. Ok, how about this then:
In my experience, frats tend to breed rampant irresponsibility.
Isn't that any college dormitory?
My experience with fraternities is that if you meet the right people, you can get whatever you need, but you never want to have to make any real connection because they always make you pay.
Are they a bad thing or a good thing? Yes and No.
To each their own.

Please no. I don't want to get into political theory, I did four years of that in college. Proudhon, Godwin, Dana (if we're talking mutualism), Thoreau, Goldman, Berkman blah blah blah I've had this talk before when I was 19 and thought it mattered.
"Classic" anarchism, individual anarchism, anarcho-collectivism, anarcho-syndicalism, mutualism, even those "green" anarchists. I'm familiar, dude. I don't buy it. Anarchy is a waste of time.

Well clearly, because you were making broad generalizations that don't even make sense. If anarchy was such a "social impossibility" it wouldn't still function in numerous small communities around the world. If you mean anarchy is a "social impossibility" (what the fuck does that even mean anyway) on a large scale like a large country, that's a totally different issue. Instead, your (whoever it was originally) generalizations perpetuate ignorance about something your 200 level college classes (and mediocre, cliched reading lists) could never teach you.
EDIT: I have no desire to defend anarchy. I simply want to stop stupid people from misusing terms.

Jared, I gotta say, as someone who categorizes my beliefs in the rarified arena of "rational anarchy" I'm kinda puzzled by what exactly you're taking umbrage with. In what way is anarchy NOT impossible? And in what small communities are you claiming it is currently functioning? Cause... it doesn't. Maybe during brief periods of total social upheaval like a civil war in some third world country you could say there is "anarchy," but that's just as a descriptive term--not as an actual maintainable state.

I also take issue with your use of the above word. But I'm just being an asshole. I don't want to get into an argument about anarchy, I simply want stupid people to not throw the word around like they know what it means:

Blah blah blah 200-level courses blah blah blah. Are you done yet, son? I'm sorry that you see the foundational writings regarding anarchism to be mediocre and cliche. Maybe it is you who should take a course on the subject. In my undergraduate and graduate studies, I have yet to read a truly convincing piece regarding anarchism (large-scale, small-scale, syndicalism, green, feminist, whatever). Sorry, I just don't buy it.
And who really gives a fuck if Arthur misused the term? This is a fucking message board. Get a grip, dude. If you want to argue with stupid people, you've come to the right board, but don't count on anyone being enamored by your self-proclaimed expertise on socio-economic ideologies. Get fucked.

You can get it without shipping on a lot of websites, but as far as I've seen, it's about $399 everywere, including GC. I'd wait for a sale.

I hate new money, and I hate people who think they have to show off when they think they have lots of money. I don't know what you're trying to prove and I don't care. You don't see me bragging about those 5 original 7" copies of Love Buzz I could go and snag do you (because I can assure you, I would never pay 1200 for a dinner)?

I wasn't blaming you for it. I agree about the ridiculousness. I was just pointing out that the series of single sentences exchanged over two pages was fucking boring as shit. This is why I write huge long posts--because otherwise furbrain fill up the page.

Oh... Don't worry, my hair is already down. I had the ponytail on too tight earlier and conditioned it good and long to loosen everything up. I'm fine thanks.

it's amusing how idiotic you all area. you think i have the kind of money to drop $1300 at dinner? all my friends paid their own way. you all just needed something else to hate on me for. please. your life must be pretty fucking sad if you get enjoyment out of constantly harrassing a 20 year old girl all the time. go work on developing some class.
better yet, you might get better use out of your $1200 if you go out and buy some.

OUCH! That is expensive. How is Fogo de Chao? I've never been. I went to Picanha in Burbank for my birthday in 2006 and 2007, but it's about half the price of that. I guess Fogo has more meats?
I could live off of the picanha and garlic beef at Picanha.

03-12-2008, 01:17 AM
Hhahahaha. More meats.
Yeah I guess it would. It was damn good, but this is all based on the salad bar thingy, as I'm vegitarian. (Oh the things I do for my boyfriend...)
But honest to god, the most classy, upscale salad bar I've ever seen. This ain't no Sizzler, that's for sure.
And they bring fried plantains to your table. My Cuban heart was all aglow.

I have a better question--if there was just like 20 of you out to dinner and therefore reasonably priced, why the fuck did you take a picture of the check? Who gives a shit?

You didn't get a vegetarian discount? I think Picahna does that.
LOL @ Sizzler
It's a fun thing to do, I think. Great food, too. But I know too many people that don't eat meat or eat at all, so that's why I had a karaoke and sushi party for my birthday instead (family had taken me to the churrascaria) last year. And that's expensive too. Zip Fusion...they told me $100 for the karaoke room, and once I got the bill, the room fee was included on the bill, so $130 after tax and gratuity just for the room.
This year was a rather boring, depressing birthday. The girl I've liked for the longest time didn't even say happy birthday this year.
Why am I talking about this?
there's an empty bottle of wine and i need sleep.

This I guess is a response to KK …. Here is how you do it my dear …… 1300 for three bottles of Champaign …… 750 for dinner for 4 at the steakhouse46 …. Room was (it was my sis room and I don’t know how much it was, but I just looked on line and the suite they showed was not the penthouse like we were in and the cheap suite was 720 a night, so sis room was probable 1200 a night) … so anyway, add all of that up, and it costs us <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< zilch, zero, nada …. Its all comp .. So if you go to McDonalds today, and spend 5 bucks, you spent more money then we did …. So life is relative gal …. X****

there is a new place near my house, they serve fried plantain and yucca. i cant believe how happy i am that they're here. Mainly Mexican food, but some Venezuelan also. I like mexican, but i'm not, so i get sick of it pretty quick. its good to have something familiar.
