i haven't put one of these together for a while. my ambition was to take care of 2010, but damn this takes a long time. So i got January and February covered here. Anyone wants to do the next couple of months, feel free. March starts on page 825 (http://coachella.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2159&page=825). Putting up all pictures would be ridiculous. If you had less than 30 post, it had to be pretty epic to be considered. Other than that, whatever caught the eye.

Please explain your use of flash midday?

When shooting winners with Dani i have to be ready for any situation where the sun might be on someone or not. Also when walking around, i might be in a tent and the flash guarantees me the speed to get the shot and out. The flash built in to the camera isn't large enough to get past the lens and the hood, so i attach the external. i also have been enjoying the depth a little burst (usually set it for -2/3 to -1 2/3) gives to the picture by separating the subject(s) from the background a bit.

The toy....It's my dirty travel monkey, Guido. Suprisingly, this toy has traveled more places than I have been. My friend took him to Europe last year and he has been to Stonehedge, the Roman Baths, Buckingham Palace, he has a steam boat operator's license in New York...this monkey is the source of much laughter and strange looks. He was treated like a heroin mule in customs as they inspected (my favorite). We comprised a video of Guido's adventures. I hope it works, and thank you for all the help last night-

I also dislike the fact that from the late 70s on, Oldenburg collaborated with his wife Coosje van Bruggen on all his work, and by all accounts, she was actually the driving artistic force behind most of the work, but yet does not get credited.

I see this and I agree for the most part. To me, Koons is a poor man's Andy Warhol -- which, interestingly enough, most people I've come across use your anti-Koons argument as an anti-Warhol argument, but the merits of Warhol are better left for another day and another thread.

Taking only into consideration the Koons on display at LACMA, the social critique of someone like Warhol is nearly absent in all the Koons pieces they have. (Minus MJ&Bubbles, yes...But this is the exception to the rule and really the only Koons piece I have ever "gotten behind.")

This is the conversation that my boyfriend and I invented yesterday while in that Koons/Warhol room; we were imagining the reaction of a "normal person" with a very small working knowledge of "art" (ie: "This is pretty, I like colors!" "This has a naked person, it's icky!" "I like flowers!"):

"Inflatable pool floaties on a chain link fence! How very cute and different! I understand this because the floaties are cute and colorful and I think one of them is a duck (!!!) and chair link fences are ugly and dirty. It is like two different things in the same place! I am smart. I understand art."

"Ooh, I like this because it is a giant balloon dog. It is cute. This is nicer than the pictures of people getting maimed."

And so on and so on.

I found the balloon dog and the egg to be "cute" and nothing more. They're a nice novelty piece -- and I did enjoy the way the egg captured our reflections, hence the photo.

On a side note, I was a tad upset when Chris wasn't as into German Expressionism as I am -- I'm beyond obsessed. My actual words to him were, "This is all so maudlin and dreary and grotesque! I thought you'd be in love." He wasn't. Sadface all around.

I also had to "explain" abstract impressionism to him, which wasn't too fun.

He did, however, really enjoy a painting by Otto Dix, so I guess I have to forgive him. #artpretension

For me, Koons and Warhol don't even deserve to be grouped together. Yes, they both take common everyday imagery and create fine art. Yes, they both claim to make work that does not have any meaning beyond its surface. However, Warhol is specifically interested in pop culture and mass media, and his use is often direct appropriation. Moreover, Warhol's works, especially his mid-career works, share a noted preoccupation with mortality (see for example his prints of Marilyn Monroe or Jackie O, or his electric chair series). And furthermore, Warhol's interaction and collaboration with peer artists such as Basquiat and his interactions in the Factory add another layer of depth to his work that Koons will never have.

Edit: I should also note that when Warhol was creating art in the 1960s, these ideas were fresh and had relevance. Koons, who has been creating this sort of work since the early 1990s, just seems like the worst sort of cynical kitsch.
