training camps open this week. fuck yeah.

Why the NFL is better than MLB: if it's late in the season and your team sucks, you can still go to an NFL game and have a good time. I have lots of experience with this.

Why the NFL is better than the NBA: they play defense in the NFL.

Why the NFL is better than the NHL: fewer canadians. Lots fewer.

Why the NFL is better than NCAA football: college ball is played in places like Tuscaloosa and Knoxville and South Bend. College ball is like half ball and half nascar. It's considered poor form to boo a college team for playing bad. College ball has far too many mismatches. Also, there's something wrong with whole idea of academic institutions functioning as big dollar sports franchises.

Are football games that hard to sell out? Basketball and baseball seem challenged by the frequency of games... but 15 games in a season (something like that right?) seems like a walk in the park to sell out.

The problem is, football tickets are way more expensive for the average attendee than baseball or basketball is, and the stadiums are a lot bigger, so there's more tix to sell out...a lot of teams have no problems with this, but some do (just ask the Raiders).

Actually, depends on where you're talking about, Menik. In L.A., the basketball tickets are more expensive in terms of dealing with the Lakers (not so much the Clippers) that an NFL ticket. It was considerably cheaper to see the Raiders/Rams than it was to catch Magic and the Showtime Lakers. It would probably be the same nowadays even with say, the Chargers as L.A.'s team. Though it would be close. I dont know how the Raiders were unable to sell out games, but then I realize they played in the colossal Coliseum. That place is horrible to watch anything besides EDC.

In regards to the sellout issue: there were zero NFL television blackouts for the 2006 season. Which means that all NFL games were officially considered sold out for that season. You do have to keep in mind that large companies, indian casinos, etc. often buy the remaining tix so the games are not blacked out.

Do blackouts affect Sunday Ticket holders? Because if not, I don't understand why any establishment would buy NFL tickets (three of which easily cost more than the cable package) just so the games would be televised.

They buy the NFLST so they can show every nfl game. They can still show the local games on the local networks. Unless there is a blackout which means the game will not be broadcast locally (even on NFLST) My favorite team is in the midwest, so Im good.

Favre is an idiot for the call, but he's a bigger dumbass for retiring in the 1st place. There was noise that he wasn't sure about quitting and shouldn't have in the first place. Granted, it is time to see if Rodgers can disprove the Tedford curse and become something useful, but that show could've waited one more season at least or the Pack should've jettisoned Farvie to give him one mo' shot somewhere else. Fuck his legacy, it is secured. He'll have that Jordanesque Wizards follie too, but he's got his legend. Just as long as it doesn't come out he juiced and porked an underage chick and he's straight.

Well, to be fair...

Montana had more success than any of the aforementioned legends. He lead the Chiefs to the playoffs on a number of occasions and if Favre had some of the same success, he'll be alright. There are exceptions to the rule (Montana and Drexler w/the Rockets) but (Karl Malone and Barkley) seem to be more of the norm. If I were a pro athlete I would've been more like Sandy Koufax or Robert Smith (No, not the Cure frontman but Minnesota's former RB) and retired on the top of the game. Especially if I have won a couple SBs or rings or whatever sport's championship.

What's important to note is that the Broncos handled this situation with complete class. Lynch felt it didn't fit, they were honest about his prospective role in their plan for 2008, so they met like men, and made the decision for an amicable split.

Too bad Green Bay's too damn dumb to do the same.

Too bad Green Bay's too damn dumb to do the same.

The whole Packer vs. Favre debacle has gone on long enough, if it is prolonged through most of August I think it could start affecting the image of the NFL. Goodell has to put an end to it SOON.

schoolofruckus
07-31-2008, 09:14 PM
I don't think it will hurt the NFL. It'll hurt the Packers in a major way - if the Vikings didn't already have a cakewalk to the division title, they certainly do now - but I think everyone else just wishes the sports media would move on.

I have to agree with an observation on ProFootballTalk.com that Favre's antics of the last two months are doing more to destroy his legacy (particularly in light of reports that he's considering taking the $20 million offer to stay retired) than any pro athlete ever has.

ThomThom
07-31-2008, 09:26 PM
The $20 mill offer is ridiculous on the Packers end. What are they the fucking mafia? It seems like their trying to keep a star witness mum and in hiding in order to avoid a can of worms being opened in court. Can they really just give him 20 mill to stay the fuck away?

i dont understand why the packers wont just trade him away to another team outside of their division for like a 2nd or 3rd round pick. stop being assholes and let the man go play somewhere else. its the least they could do for the guy, considering what hes done for that franchise.

schoolofruckus
07-31-2008, 09:32 PM
Technically, it's illegal. The Eagles tried to do that with T.O., and after that arbitration dust settled, it became against regulations to pay a player not to play. That's why it's being called a "marketing deal". Which, I suppose, isn't entirely inaccurate, except that the purpose is defeated by the fact that everyone sees right through it.

It's because he won't approve any of those trades. They can't trade him anywhere he doesn't want to go, because all he has to do is not show up and the team that traded for him is fucked. He doesn't want to go to the Jets or Bucs, or any team the Packers want to trade him to (which is basically anyone that isn't playing them this year). He wants to go to Minnesota.

Sexecutioner

There isn't much of a market for a 38 year old quarterback who from the looks of last season is on his way out. Sure, he did have a great season but you could see the age kicking him in the ass on numerous occasions. There are really only 3 teams that I can think of right now that are in dire need of a proven quarterback... The Vikings, Jets, and Bears. Of course he can only go to one of those teams and who the fuck wants to play for the Jets?

gmoneyak
07-31-2008, 10:10 PM
As a Vikings fan, I'm over this Favre bullshit. It was a novel idea a month ago , but fuck.. It's a week 'til the 1st Preseason game already and you'll just be messing w/team chemistry at this point. Tavaris Jackson has a fragile psyche to begin with, I wouldn't want to unnecessarily play with it now for a 1 year rental QB.

ThomThom
07-31-2008, 10:19 PM
I think Favre is going to end up getting slapped in the face by all of this. I guess he thought he'd be much more sought after. If I were him I'd take a deal to the Bucs and call it a day. The Bucs are actually a good team this year and he already has somewhat of a relationship with Gruden. Obtaining a player like Favre wouldn't put the Bucs in the superbowl or anything like that but it would put them in a much better position in the South by allowing them to contend against the powerhouse the Saints have become this off season. Plus I think Favre could fill in all of the gaps left by Garcia in Tampa's west coast offense.

Fucking jackass, it is because A) It is the offseason and not much going on B) Favre is a legend when it comes to the QB position C) The Packers where fucking everything up, and basically saying that we don't care how you turned around the franchise D) It is the offseason there is always a couple stories that dominate the football news in the offseason. Nonsense! QB is the most important position on the field. Farve is one of the best QBs to ever play the game. He got black balled by the team he won a super bowl with, played in every game for over a decade and is seen as god-like by Packer fans. Not to mention that Farve is one of the NFL's most marketable players.

Looks like then, the N.Y. Jets will probably need a new coach. The AFC is without a doubt, the class of the NFL. Here's teams you can bank on making the playoffs: Indy, N.E., Jacksonville, Pittsburgh, San Diego, teams who should make the playoffs: Cleveland, teams that will improve and make the playoffs: Cinci and/or Baltimore. That leaves one team left for the final wildcard. Not too much wiggle room if you think about it. If, the Jets can find a D then maybe. I'm not holding my breath. I see a surprise team snatching the final spot. Think Houston, Denver, or Tennessee...

Another mess on our hands in AZ...

Anquan Boldin's unhappiness is a story that didn't die after he lambasted the organization at the beginning of camp. It just went on a three-week hiatus, returning Monday with slight variations in the story line.

As a fellow member of the media said today, Anquan arrived in Flagstaff angry and he's going to leave angry. Much of what Boldin vented Monday to NFL.com wasn't new. He feels betrayed by the organization and can't see himself re-signing with the Cardinals. He said the same things three weeks ago.

The surprise came when he criciticized coach Ken Whisenhunt. The two have no relationship, said Boldin, who feels like Whisenhunt stepped over the line by involving himself in negotiations.

The whole thing is a sordid mess. It's especially troubling because Boldin once was the golden child of the organization, which did everything to praise him short of commissioning a statue.

Boldin's comments came Monday evening, after Whisenhunt's daily meeting with reporters, so we haven't had a chance to get a response. That will come on Tuesday. So will Boldin's view of the situation.

Earlier in the day, Whisenhunt denied reports that he had no relationship with Boldin and didn't talk to the receiver.

The team, so far, has shown no inclination to trade Boldin, and my hunch is owner Bill Bidwill isn't going to budge off that stance. He can be stubborn and he could determine that letting a player talk his way out of town would set a bad precedent. That's the stance the Bengals took with Chad Johnson, who had little recourse but to report to camp.

Damn this is frustrating! Q was my favorite, all this bitching about people knowing their roles in the organization, he's a player, PLAY THE GAME!!

What pick did you get Brady with B-field?

I have the 6th pick in my draft, speculation leads me to believe the first five will go:

LT
Westbrook
AP
M Barber (I know)
TO (I know I know)

My question considering this is the order, who would YOU go with? Addai, S-Jax or Brady?

I hate the Q situation too. I am always quick to blame the Cards.
But I hate Q's agent, so who knows what is going on.

I got TB with the 5th pick. I am happy with how my draft played out.
If you take Brady, you will still have a shot at a strong RB in round 2, then Fitz in round 3.

Have fun at the ballgame tonight D!

Looks like Matt's awful showing last night sealed the deal....

Source: Cardinals set to name QB Warner as starter
By Chris Mortensen

Updated: August 24, 2008, 11:58 AM ET

The Arizona Cardinals are expected to name Kurt Warner as the team's starting quarterback, a team source said Sunday.

Matt Leinart's poor performance Saturday night against the Oakland Raiders probably sealed the decision.

Leinart had three interceptions in the first half and completed just 4 of 12 passes for 24 yards. His passer rating was 2.8. The Cardinals won the game 24-0.

The source said Leinart's training-camp performance has been uneven, and the Cardinals are concerned about his arm strength and consistency.

After the game, coach Ken Whisenhunt said Leinart was still in the running for the Cardinals' starting job.

"I know Matt's down because he didn't play as well as he would have liked," Whisenhunt said. "This competition, being pushed by Kurt, has made Matt tougher. It's one of the things you have to be as a quarterback."

ESPN's Chris Mortensen covers the NFL. Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

WTF? TO in top 6? you are on crack.

Addai probably wont be there at 6, unless you are drafting with idiots. If he is there, you should definitely take him. You will probably have a choice between Barber, Portis, or S-Jax, and maybe Brady. I had 6th in my work draft and was pretty stoked that S-Jax was still on the board when it got to me.

In other news, my raiders looked horrible against the fucking cards last night. Couldnt even get on the board. I had high hopes considering how good we looked last week against Tennessee, who I thought would be tougher than AZ. Either AZ has a really good D, or we have a horrible O.

Brett Favre
Brian Westbrook
Larry Johnson
Andre Johnson
Torry Holt
Reggie Wayne
Chris Cooley
Stephen Gostkowski
Seattle D
Willis McGahee
Edgerrin James
Donald Driver
Nate Burleson
Tony Scheffler
Jack Delhomme

Is this a joke? Seriously, how the fuck did you get all those top tier players in each position? Who the fuck was everybody else picking in the top rounds as you picked up Westy, LJ, McGahee, Edge, Wayne, Johnson, and Holt? Were they picking kickers and D in the top 6 rounds? That is seriously unbelievable.

First 3 quarters we actually looked OK.
Our 3rd & 4th string looked awful in the 4th quarter.

But it is only preseason...so who knows what to gather from it....

The 4th preseason game is only important for those that are playing for their career...Long & Iwebema played very well, as they are on the bubble to make the final 53.

Leinart led the team on 2 TD drives in the 2nd quarter, the only quarter in which he played. One of those drives was a 95 yarder.

now just a few tidbits....

“The only starter to be in full gear for the Broncos was fullback Cecil Sapp. Rookie Peyton Hillis, the only other full-time fullback on the roster, took the snaps with the offense, but Sapp was on the sideline and available if needed.”

WAY TO GO ARIZONA!!

Leinhart take a good look at Kurt because you are already as washed up as he is.

Shanahan stats….

The all-time high of 636 points in a season came from the 1994 Super Bowl Champion San Francisco 49ers, for whom Shanahan was the offensive coordinator. This was eclipsed during the 2007 season when the New England Patriots scored 589 points in the regular season and 66 points in the postseason for a total of 655 points.

During his NFL career, Shanahan has been a part of teams that have played in 10 Conference Championship Games, in addition to his six Super Bowl appearances, five with Denver and Super Bowl XXIX with San Francisco.

Highest winning percentage in Denver history (.646).

In 2004, he joined the exclusive club of head coaches to post 100 wins in his first 10 seasons with one club, finishing the campaign and decade tied for fourth on this ultra-impressive list of 12 coaches, six of whom are enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

I mostly stayed away from elway years stats.

He will. Jerry knows how to keep guys out of trouble. I'm still trying to figure out how he kept Michael Irvin out of trouble for all those years.

I hope rudi johnson tears it up in Det. Not because I like detroit, but because I drafted rudi johnson in like the 14th round of my fantasy draft.

I picked up Perry at the end of our draft hoping that Rudi would go. Now I'm hoping that Perry actually keeps the job over Watson.

Young blood, when our teams meet up I am going to crush you.
