07-16-2008, 03:51 PM
I go to all of these every year. Only in the last two years have they been this good though. It's been around for like 20 years or something. Anyway, the Roots were awesome last week. They played a lot of the same songs they did at Coachella including the Masters of War cover. Andrew Bird this thursday!!! and yeah I am most excited for broken social scene, but almost just as excited for De La Soul (Grind Date, bitches). Now that there is an official thread for this shit I will post pics from each concert as it happens.

edit: wasted if you are in town and are going to be at one of the concerts hit me up, even though I hate you and you know nothing about the difference between 2manyDJs and soulwax. :). We usually have a HUGE group of people and just party the whole night.

Wasted is pretty good people, funny kid, suffers from a dose of hubris similar to my own. He could still stand to keep his voice down more frequently though. When are you gonna be back in LA, Waste? And why did you have to fail me so hard on the medication I so desperately need?

Also, does your friend want any more cid?

Andrew Bird last night was amazing. It was a newer material heavy set (like last two albums heavy) and, as usual, he did not disappoint. I tried to keep track of the songs on my cell phone, but that was a lost cause as the night moved along. Thus, no setlist. De La Soul next week!!!

HOLY FUCKING SHIT

The initial lineup to this years FREE Twilight Concert Series held annually in Salt Lake City:

Thurs July 9 : Jenny Lewis w/ Bon Iver
Thurs July 16: The Black Keys
Thurs July 23: M. Ward
Thurs July 30: Sonic Youth

This is just the initial lineup, there will be another 4 concerts added in the month of August. The events are sponsored by all the micro-breweries in Utah and have way cheap beer. Did I mention all these shows are free? My excitement cannot be contained right now.

I thought you can only get three two beer in Utah

kreutz2112
03-24-2009, 02:32 PM
The grocery stores sell 3.2% beer, but the micro-breweries are allowed to brew and sell 4% beer. They can brew higher percantage beer, but it has to be sold at the brewery itself or at the liquor store. Beer higher than 4% can't be sold in a convenience store or grocery store.

It's the same way here as far as gas stations and grocery stores

So are you saying the strongest they can legally brew is 4%?

It's the same way here as far as gas stations and grocery stores

So are you saying the strongest they can legally brew is 4%?

No, I'm saying the strongest they can sell in stores is 4%.

All of the cheap beers (i.e. Budweiser, Miller, etc) are sold at 3.2% in grocery stores. Micro-brews are sold in grocery stores at 4%. Micro-brews that exceed 4% must be sold at the brewery itself or at the state liquor store.

YES! Great lineup. I am all for the $5 charge. Hopefully it will weed out alot of the bros that have no idea who's playing and are only there because it's become the thing to do on Thursdays. Common, MMJ, Raphael Saadiq! His 2011 set was on point. Making for alot of cheap shows this summer what with Red Butte being like a mile from my house and the free hillside watching, $5 Twilight shows and mostly free entry to Urban. Think I will blow some more $$$ on fests in between time. Wakarusa is calling my name.....

Originalbob

The Walkmen sounded really great tonight. Beach House obviously blew their mellow pop out of the water! To quote Ice Cube, "Today's been a good day!"

kreutz2112
07-06-2012, 06:46 AM
Was it as crowded as it usually is, or did the $5 charge thin out the crowd a bit?

Miroir Noir
07-06-2012, 07:16 AM
They were estimating it way down, like in the 10K range. In addition to the price, there were a lot of other factors, too: rainy weather during the day, the holiday in the middle of the week, and a lot of other shows in town the same night.

It was very nice though.

That's so nice it wasn't that crowded. The first one was always the most packed too so I imagine it will stay that way throughout the remainder of the series. Sigh. This is my favorite time in Salt Lake.

The $5 didn't really make much of a dent but the Beach House set was so gorgeous it helped me to eventually ignore the fucknuggets trying to yell their very important conversations over the music. They always bring it, but this may have come in as my second favourite show out of 4, my fave being their 2011 Sasquatch set.

Nas, Common and probably MMJ are going to bring back the insane crowds, though.

As a three-year TCS veteran, I'm less thrilled with this year's lineup than I have been with the last several years' set of shows ... The highlights are pretty great (BECK / FUTURE ISLANDS & WU TANG / RUN THE JEWELS) but there are some seriously questionable bookings mixed in there. THE HEAD AND THE HEART? They've only played SLC three times in the last two years. CHARLES BRADLEY / BUDOS BAND? I'll be honest and say that I don't know a ton about either of these bands, but it sure seems like it completely misses their target demographic from the last few years. Same with DE LA SOUL. Certainly doesn't come close to matching the upward trend the series has shown in the last 3-5 years, or even last years' lineup. Just a bit of a letdown, for me.

Just a warning for anyone thinking about driving from far away for any of these. The crowd is absolutely terrible. There were bros moshing to the Decemberists a few years ago. The performers are constantly getting heckled by drunk idiots, constant talking, shouting, pushing and overall douchebagerry. The crowds are huge and they are annoying. Tons of teenagers. The only way to really have a great experience at one of these is to be like kroqken and get the rail. Now I've only been to 3 but I know plenty of people who won't even go to these because the crowd is so awful. I'm not trying to be a killjoy but this has been my experience every time.

SONR801

^ Only show I've had issues at was Ludacris. Every other one has been great. I just wish they'd move it to Liberty park and do it in the center clearing to add some more wiggle room.

Who's going to beck? I'd love to meet some other boardies!

kreutz2112
05-10-2014, 08:45 AM
For those considering traveling to these shows, I tend to agree with Taylor. These aren't your standard concerts. The crowd is enormous and consists of >50% assholes, who are only there to hangout with friends and get drunk. I haven't been to one since they started charging $5, but I don't imagine the small price tag has reduced the asshole number by any substantial margin.

Miroir Noir
05-10-2014, 08:53 AM
The $5 thing has helped a lot, but yeah, these crowds can still get obnoxious. It honestly depends on the act playing; Beck will have an older crowd, and that will make a big difference.

^ This. All depends on the show you go to. Erykah Badu was great last year. Luda...not so much. I'm expecting a shit crowd for Wu so I'll probably avoid that one but Charles Bradley & Beck will be awesome.

djbionik
07-14-2014, 12:07 PM
I'm working the whole series except Beck. Be sure to tip your beer tent friends!

And as far as the crowd goes, I'm biased, since I'm pent up in the tents pouring beer- but I refuse to believe it's THAT terrible. Nearly everyone who comes in for a drink is pretty nice, has great things to say about the show and the people. The city does a lot to keep this event going, and they try to keep it as fun and safe as possible. There's shitty people at every show, and we all know that if you're there for the act, then get there early and communicate your concerns with the people around you. Make friends. I hope to meet other boardies too, so say hi if you do come!

Last week at Lauryn Hill, everything went as smoothly as a park concert is expected to go. I hope that keeps up for the whole series.

Taylor
08-02-2014, 01:50 PM

djbionik
08-11-2014, 11:02 AM
Considering that was the worst crowd ever, but even so- not even that terrible. At least most people were adults in their fuckery. I probably poured 400 beers my damned self, and we all made only about $100 each that night. Cheap bastards.

I'm taking this week off to actually SEE Beck. Pretty excited.
