With the fantastic Euros this year, I think it is time to create the official all things Footie thread. So, let's bring the passion of the World's game. Whether it be EPL, Serie A, La Liga, MLS, World Cup, etc.

First up...Berbatov to Man U looking more and more like a done deal:

http://www.zeenews.com/articles.asp?aid=454949&sid=SPO

That's a lot of cash for a guy that may not even start.

Also, looks like Ronaldinho is headed to City.

Been an interesting transfer season so far!

EPL starts up August 16th with my beloved Newcastle vs. Man U.

Arshavin would be a strong pickup, but Arsenal is in definite need of a serious striker if Adebayor leaves...I know Arshavin is considered a striker by some, but I see him more as a winger, and his goal scoring record isn't that impressive.....Van Persie is amazing, but you can't count on him being healthy for more than a few games at a time, who knows when Eduardo will be back, Wolcott is somewhat of a mystery, at Bendtner....nevermind

is that really allowed in Utah? or do you have to take Prohibition era tunnels to some secret underground lair that they smuggle alcohol to from across state lines? I'm just kidding of course...

that would be wonderful, but RVP makes me cringe every time he's got the ball...anytime a defender steps near him, it makes me nervous! Love his talent though, hopefully he'll stay healthy....they'll need a scorer if Adebayor is gone

anyone know any recent news about Rosicky? I haven't heard anything about his status forever

Hleb is leaving also... I think if Adebayor leaves they'll pick up Martens from Newcastle... Berbatov will have a huge striker by his side this season, Giovanni Dos Santos from Barcelona, if he stays with the hot spurs those two will make a nice combination... Anyway with Hleb, Rosicky and Adebayor leaving, Arsenal should be fine with Martens, Nasri and Eduardo coming back.. Would be awesome if they get Arshavin he could replace Rosicky... Nasri, Fabregas and Arshavin in the midfield imagine the speed that they would have...

/\ Eduardo is coming back, but it will be a while before anyone will know what to expect from him...glad to see his career isn't over, as it could have been

Van Persie could be ready for his chance to really shine, but like I said earlier, impossible to tell how many games you'll get from him

I didn't mention Hleb before, as it is pretty much a foregone conclusion that he is leaving

I think they'd have to pick up someone like Martins, if Adebayor leaves, to give them an established scoring threat...I would love the new look midfield with Cesc, Nasri, maybe Arshavin, but not enough goals in that group yet...hopefully Cesc will continue his transformation into a legitimate scoring threat that he showed early last season

As for the gunners, fear not! Arsene's greatest skill is getting young, quality players on the cheap. While it sucks losing Helb and Flamini, Nasri will flourish in the Arsenal style of play.

I found this on Digg.com

7 Reasons Why America Will Never Embrace Soccer

http://www.athlists.com/?p=19

1. Americans donít have the Attention Spans.

Soccer is a continuous game that is heavily influenced by a teams endurance and stamina. Unfortunately, Americans do not understand that concept. While the most popular sport in the United States involves watching a car go around a track for 600 miles, soccer is players running constantly for 90 minutes. Unlike soccer, however, NASCAR also involves the elements of horrendous crashes, pit stops, and fan favorites. Football also stops after every play, and during the four quarters of the game. The same goes for the innings of baseball, and the quarters of basketball.

2. Low Scores.

Because soccer is such a competitive and trying sport, the scores remain relatively few and far between. Americans like scoring, in all ways, forms, and meanings. Look at every other sport and their average scores, and then compare them to a high scoring soccer affair involving 5 Ė 6 goals. While scoring a goal is exciting, you have to remember spectators endure 90 minutes of passing balls and running in order to witness the goal.

3. Americans are Fat.

The average weight for American men is 191 pounds, which is 20 pounds heavier than men 40 years ago. The childhood obesity problem doesnít help either, with nearly 20% of children between the ages of 6 Ė 12 being overweight. Simple logic will tell you that being overweight means being unhealthy, which probably means you canít perform well at stamina sports such as soccer. Other sports, however, rely on the big man to take the post, block and tackle, or mash a bomb out of the park. Soccerís not a big manís game . . . and a nationís sports interest that is fixed in an unhealthy lifestyle will likely focus on sports that donít require healthiness or losing weight

4. There are no Individuals in Soccer.

Although there are players like Henry, Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, and Beckham, the majority of great players and teams rely on teamwork more than any other sport in existence. Football, baseball, and basketball can all stand to have a weak link during game play. Although the weakest link can be exploited in these sports, the offense does not suffer from their mishaps and great players can more than make up for them. Players like Peyton Manning, Lebron James, and Randy Johnson can single handedly take over the game and produce a win. However, soccer requires extreme teamwork and patience. One weak link could mean a collapse in offense as well as defense. Americanís like a hero . . . and itís hard to be a hero on the soccer field without losing it for the team.

5. The Lack of Stats.

In all athletics, stats are crucial for the sports junkie. Being able to rattle off batting, FG, or QB ratings bring joy to millions of Americans. In soccer, the only real stats are passes, tackles, goals, and saves. Of course there are the occasional corners and cards, but the stats simply arenít as meaningful nor interesting as other mainstream American sports. I could not tell you the passing percentage of Spain in the UEFA Cup, but I can tell you the ERA of most NL pitchers. The same goes for most of Americans that follow any sport closely.

6. No Rivalries in America.

The MLS boasts an unimpressive 16 teams in 16 cities here in America. There are only 2 conferences, and their marketing has done little to focus on city rivalries. In other sports we have Carolina v. Duke, New York v. Boston, USC v. UCLA, and so on. In the MLS, there is hardly any gut wrenching rivalries to partake in. In Europe it is the complete opposite, where hundreds of teams have city rivals, as well as their country rivals. Until thereís some flare, American soccer will remain on the backburner.

7. Americanís love exactness.

When a player drops a football, fans scream. They also do the same for dropped baseball, basketballs, or even when a NASCAR driver misses his line and falls behind. We love perfection and our team never turning the ball over. Which explains why Americanís could become very frustrated while watching a game of soccer. Because the soccerball is handled by the feet and can be extremely hard to control, precision is hard to come by during a match.

News from yesterday. Very sad for the Spurs, in my opinion. They are really sending mixed messages to the fans. On one hand, they land a HUGE signing of Modric, and get rid of troubled keeper Robinson...then they let their Captain go, and potentially their top scorer in Berbs.

Do they want to break into the top 4, or not?

I can't wait to see how Keane and Torres play together. Should be a fun year at Anfield.

On a much more important note, I'm a little worried about Arsenal. They've got a champions league side but I don't think they have the fire power to seriously contend for the prem. Eduardo can't heal quickly enough. Unless Van Pierse can get back to form and the midfield stays healthy.

Thanks! Yesterday I was checking it out, it's really awesome...

Ahh.. Chelsea making a move on Robihno??... Won't happen, unless Real has Cristiano in their posession...

One more week and the EPL starts... I don't think there'll big transfers until next year...

Hey I heard something about Zidane moving to the MLS to play for the team that's in NY...??

Thanks again for the link...

To clarify...I heard that rumor, as well. To the Galaxy, I believe. I had not heard about a move to NY, though.

I hope it does not happen. Zidane has a great legacy (headbutt the exception), and if he comes to the MLS and stinks it up, that legacy will be tarnished.

Zidane has such a strong legacy, that I think it would be difficult to tarnish it by playing in the MLS. I see what you mean though.

I like the idea of some European footballers coming to the MLS and bringing a little credibility with them. Hopefully they can help keep raising the profile of football in the US and in turn raising attendance and revenues, so that one day, many American athletes will see football as a viable alternative to our established sports leagues.

downingthief
08-08-2008, 01:42 PM
Definitely, I agree. With Becks coming over, he still was playing and not retired. He clearly has shown this season that he has plenty of football left in him.
Where I think it can be damaging is when a Euro legend comes out of retirement to try his hand in the MLS. I think that does more harm than good.

The MLS will never surpass the NBA, NFL, MLB, etc in this country. That was never its goal, though. The goal of the MLS is to compete with other soccer leagues around the world. If the league only gets the "re-tread" players, that does not help the cause. Hopefully, with Becks showing good form, it will entice other players to come over as well.

humanoid
08-08-2008, 02:08 PM
I don't expect MLS to surpass the other sports, but I think it is inevitable that as our nation's ethnic demography continually changes, soccer will gradually to a level where it is more accepted as a major sport.

I agree that the MLS doesn't need "re-tread" players, because that won't help, but I think players who have made names for themselves on the international or major club scene will help. If general fans have the option to see players they have heard of previously, I think it can only help with the exposure of the MLS. Bigger names that people want to see mean larger audiences, more jersey sales, more frequently televised games. Which all contribute to the viability and quality of the MLS. Becks was a perfect move, because his high celebrity profile along with his football skills make him a great focal point for the league, and a personality that can draw attention to the sport and league, even if many Americans are still reluctant to recognize the beautiful game.

I personally feel that Zidane is borderline regarding this issue. I feel that he could still play at a fairly high level in the MLS, but it's hard to tell now after he's been retired, and not in football condition. I think Andriy Shevchenko should come here and light up the MLS for a couple seasons, since he can't seem to keep up with the pace in EPL!

I wrestled with the Spurs. Now, if Berbs definitiely goes, that may change things. That is still up in the air, at latest report. As far as the gelling goes, if Ramos wasn't in charge, I would agree with you.

I like Everton's chances. I think they will duplicate their push to the front from last season. Also, I think the Keane addition will pay off for Liverpool. I do think they will struggle at first, but will get it together in time to push past Chelsea for the 2nd spot.

I loathe Man U, so picking them to win again was not easy...

Mexico had a really bad game yesterday against Honduras, it was the first game with Sven on the Sideline... Mexico got it together until Cuahtemoc was playing... I don't know why they didn't want him there... he's one of the best playmakers that this continent has...

No, actually Sven played up front with Dos Santos and Vela, then in the second half... Guillermo Franco (Plays with Ozasuna in Spain) came in for Dos Santos, then Omar Bravo came in for Vela and then I don't who Cuahtemoc Blanco came in for and I think he came in for a midfielder... I honestly stopped watching the game because I was pissed because we were lossing against Honduras... later I found out that they won 2 to 1 on some plays that C. Blanco created...

I honestly don't know why they never invited him to play for Mexico until Sven came in, I think he had some problems with Hugo Sanchez... Blanco has been and always been a short fuse player he's always talking shit and punching people or spitting... he's like Gatuzo...

Edit: Guillermo Franco plays for Villareal In Spain, my mistake...

Ok, so two weeks into the EPL. Some thoughts...

Liverpool has two wins, but they did look a bit shaky in doing it. I still love the Keane and Torres combo. I see them having a nice run this season.

Man U. Needs some firepower, but that should come in the form of Ronaldo when he is back. Would love for someone to dethrone them.

Chelsea. Definitely the class of the premiership so far, even though they had a tough match last weekend. Deco is on fire.

Arsenal. Not a good start at all. A very unconvincing win agaisnt West Brom, and a lackluster loss to Fulham. It is early, but not the start that Wenger wanted.

Newcastle, my squad. Couldn't have asked for a better start. Owen comes in and saves the day against a scrappy Bolton side. Hopefully he stays healthy, and we can see what he does along side a healthy Viduka and Martins. Report here (http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=566670&sec=england&cc=5901) that Milner officially wants out. Not good. Not good, at all.

Sunderland. As much as I hate to say it, Keane has them playing very solid. That's the most you will hear me compliment them!

Tottenham. What a disaster so far. What a mess. So much money spent in transfers, they sell their skipper, and their best striker wants out. The mood needs to change soon there, or I can see them falling too far to recover in their bid to break the top 4.

I remember a fun story about some Newcastle fans. A few seasons ago, a fan had bought a season ticket. At the first game in August, the 2 seats next to him were empty. This was then the case at every home game afterwards. He thought this odd, as there was a waiting list for season tickets. He even enquired at the ticket office and was told that those seats were sold for the season.

On Boxing day (halfeay through the season), the guy gets to the game and there is a man and his son sitting in the usually empty seats, looking quite annoyed. So he asks why they haven't been to any of the other games all season.

It turns out the guys wife bought him and their son the season tickets as a Christmas present.

IMO
Keeper: Buffon (Castillas is a REALLY close second)
Defense: Alves, Materazzi, Terry, Sergio Ramos (terry will allow ramos to get forward)
Mid: Ronanldo, Kaka, Fabs, Gerrard (although gerrard is kinda getting wasted as a holding mid and I'm not sure if Fabs can play on the wing)
Forwards: Torres, Messi (but you couldn't go wrong with Drogs, Zlatan, Van Nist, or Villa)

I'll probably change this many times in the near future, especially the midfield.

What a terrible display from my boys. Arsenal was in the Magpie half all day. It was evident that Milner was missed in the midfield. Some VERY questionable calls that went Arsenal's way, but it wouldn't have made a difference in the outcome. Difference was definitely in the midfield. Newcastle could not sustain any attack. stop calling it soccer - it's football FFS m8

it's exciting because its the 'beautiful' game. So much skill, controlling the ball with your feet is difficult plus the game flows really fast. Basketball is ok, but it's so end to end there's no tension. Baseball is alright, but again. The older I get the more I could see myself liking baseball in the same way I like cricket. I don't know if Americans know this, but the rule is if you go to a live cricket match, you don't watch the match, you just play drinking games. Going to watch cricket is basically a big piss up, fall asleep and someone has won/lost.

American Football I don't really get - bit like rugby except, again, you keep stopping and starting, too many advertisements, shoulders pads and helmets. It's a bit too much.

Hockey is alright, hoever you can hardly see the puck. It's hard to know what the hell is going on.

The thing with soccer/football is, it's the tribal mentality. It's the singing, the lighting flares, the rucks with other supporters, the insulting chants. Soccer has everything. Plus people literally worship football over the world. If you go Argentina and say soccer is crap, they'll arrest you.

The main thing is, Americans want to sit down and watch their sport whereas in soccer everyone wants to stand up and scream. I've heard that American don't actually love their sports that they have as well, they just love betting and the whole hot dogs and live game experience and the wedding proposals at half time and shit like that. I don't think they actually love the sports.

Sorry if that's unclear but that's the only way I can describe it.

What they need is new ownership. Rumors floating around now that Ashley might sell, but I am not holding my breath.

Getting a new manager like Mancini or Lippi won't help, unless the board is willing to give more control back to the manager. If not, don't expect a big name to come in.

Sad days ahead. One thing is for sure, Ashley won't be downing any pints among the Geordies any time soon!

Couldn't give a monkeys mate, Geordie fans are deluded. They wanted King Kev to come back and he's quit every job he's been at once the going gets tough. I'm surprised they haven't been taken over but then saying that Ashley is a billionaire. They shouldn't have sacked their last 3-4 managers after the odd bad spell and give them at least a year. I don't blame him for leaving in this case at all. Top flight managers have say in all things transfer related, and I think KK has proven he knows what he is doing on that end. There is no doubt in my mind that the team was headed in the right direction with him at the helm.

That being said, I do agree that the most recent sackings (Sir Bobby specifically) were horrible miscalculations. I wasn't happy about Big Sam being sent off either, but that was Ashley's doing.

I don't think anyone saw it, as it was on pay per view over here, as will be the case with all other England away games. I had text commentary on my mobile, and from what i can gather we improved as the game went on - Joe Cole came on for the 2nd half and got two. Also one goal disallowed for offside. Andorra didn't even had one shot on target.

England need Rooney to be more of a finisher than a provider. Just get a little greedy at times, he has the skill. Wolcott and Cole can't be relied on to net every time out.

KINSHASA , Congo -- At least 11 people were killed in a stadium riot in eastern Congo after a soccer player tried to use witchcraft to win a local match, U.N.-backed Radio Okapi reported on Monday.

Nyuki club was losing to local rivals Socozaki on Sunday when Nyuki's goalkeeper advanced up the field and tried to use "fetishist" spells to turn the tide of the match, Okapi said, without giving more details.

When a police commander tried to break up an ensuing brawl between rival players, members of the crowd pelted him with rocks, the radio added.

Police fired teargas in response, causing a stampede to the exits in which 11 people were killed and several injured, Okapi said.

As elsewhere in Africa, many Congolese hold traditional animist beliefs and use spells, fetishes and charms to practise witchcraft, often combined with other religions like Christianity or Islam.

Sunday's riot happened in Butembo, in North Kivu province, where fighting between the army and rebels has raged on despite the official end of a 1998-2003 war that has killed an estimated 5.4 million people through violence, hunger and disease.

his agent tried to refute the rumors, saying everything is going fine and his rehab is on schedule, but it is really difficult to know for sure, considering the tabloid nature of much of the news surrounding footballers

great CL games again today

Rooney looks amazing right now...passing, finishing....he has never played this well in his career....Ronaldo looks like he's still hurting a bit, his form isn't quite there yet

Berbatov reminds me a little of Ruud Van Nistlerooy.....right place at the right time, scavenging a bunch of goals in the 6 yard box...whatever works

Arsenal looked great in Turkey today also...Walcott scored again, he's so damn fast, he almost overruns the ball a lot....great to see him breaking out after a few years of promise...Diaby back will help out a little with the midfield, but they could still use something else

I think they have a strong back 4 of Toure,Gallas, Clichy and Sagna, when they're all healthy...but when any of them are out, they feel a little exposed at times

That last goal by Rooney was beautiful.

I'm back from vacation today...missed all the matches this weekend. At least Newcastle drew (again). The Tyne-Wear derby with Sunderland is this weekend. Hopefully, a win and something to build upon will be the result.

Love the fact that a new "face" has taken center stage on the goal scoring front. Zaki has been a machine this year, without a ton of talent around him. If he keeps this up, he'll will be with one of the Big 4 within a year. Sad, but true.

Did everyone see this?

Becks on Loan to Milan (http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=584419&sec=europe&cc=5901).

I'm not sure of Milan's motivation to bring Becks over...I understand for him that Capello doesn't want anyone on the England squad that isn't playing meaningful games in Europe...but it seems Milan has plenty of midfielders, and they definitely have a free kick specialist on par with Becks

Zaki is on fire right now, hopefully he keeps it up...almost every season someone comes out of the gates looking like a new superstar, then fades as the season progresses...not saying he will, because I've watched him play a few times, and he is very talented...true, he doesn't have much support in that lineup

yesterday was a lot more fun in the CL, I thought the Liverpool/Atletico & Chelsea/Roma games were terribly boring...wish I had a big chunk of my day back! Liverpool/Atletico was a very sloppy game, but thankfully it picked up for portions of the second half

Becks would never see the field at Milan. They can barely get Flamini any playing time as it is.

My take on Zaki is good for Wigan. If he comes close to keeping this up he'll probably keep them out of the drop or at least fetch them a pretty penny if they sell him at the transfer window. That'd be a nice bit of business for them. But I don't think they can stay up without him. Bolton nearly blew it and got relegated after selling Anelka last year.

I agree about the Liverpool match. The first half was a snoozer outside of the walk-in goal. At lest Athletico made things exciting in the second half. They deserved all three points but I guess it won't really matter in the end seeing as both are going through.

I suck. Still no digital cable, or satellite. Hence, I view my matches mostly online. I do the occasional viewing at a local pub, or friend's house.

Same here. At least with Arsenal on FSC this weekend, I should have no trouble finding a site that is streaming the game on either livesoccernet or futbolarg.

It could be worse. I had to "watch" their CL match against Fenerbahce on Yahoo! UK Matchcast this week because the match was on while I was at work. Obviously our IS folks frown on sites that have streaming video because they feel it would affect our productivity.

ESPN has broadcasting rights to at least some of the CL matches, but so far I've only seen matches being broadcast on their ESPN Deportes channel, which I don't have.
