idk about that...rockies havent lost a game to the cardinals this year
things in baseball always even out, no streak is forever
plus, they are 4-0 against the Cardinals this year, which isn't a huge sampling to base anything upon
Rockies have Milwaukee at home, Giants have CUbs at home.....Milwaukee are a better road team than the Cubs this season
Rockies also play Dodgers in LA (best home record in NL), and the Giants play both SD and AZ, the 2 worst teams in their division
To me, it seems pretty clear that the Rockies have the much more difficult schedule for the remainder, even if they haven't lost to ST Louis all year (4 games)
That being said though, I still believe Colorado is going to beat out SF for the wild card, they have that look of a "team of destiny" again like in 2007

sorry, I wasn't trying to be a know it all....I just had this very discussion with a friend last night, so it was all fresh in my head

It's true! I've been looking at the same thing for the past few weeks. But we've arrived at the point that SF certainly can't lose any ground, letting opportunities like last night slip are heartbreaking.
My stomach bruised my lower jaw when I saw the ball leave random McFucker's bat with one strike left in the game.

Just bought tickets for Monday night's Tigers/Twins game. By that time, the Tigers will have blown their 2 game lead and I can watch the Twins pass them in person.
But the real reason I am going is that they're having a 25th anniversary reunion of the 1984 Tigers, the greatest baseball team of all-time.

Angles clinch an AL West title, congrats to them and their fans. Good luck against the Red Sox. After the clinch during the celebration, they all poured celebratory beer and bubbly over a Nick Adenheart Jersey that someone on the team was holding up. I thought that was a very touching moment. (Note that this is from a Giants fan who still holds a nasty grudge from 2002)
Speaking of, my guys are done. Oh well, it was a fun season and were in the thick of the playoff race until the last 10 days. Considering the past few seasons, that's not too bad. We'll probably lose Molina to free agency next year but pickup Freddie Sanchez's option pending his elbow/shoulder diagnosis. What the Giant's really need, desperately, is a legit cleanup hitter. I'd love to see us sign Matt Holliday.
So for the playoffs, go Cardinals and Red Sox. I wish the Rockies, Yankees and especially the goddamn Dodgers nothing but misfortune, tragedy and an early exit.

Hahahahahahaha....the worst thing about that team? They sucked so bad they couldn't even break the all-time record for losses. The one time the Twins have ever taken it easy on the Tigers.
And this years Tigers do not deserve to make the playoffs. They just cannot hit with runners in scoring position and they can't beat the Twins. They are going to lose 2 of the next 3 to the Twins and the Twins are going to make the playoffs this weekend.

'03 squad got the AL record though, didn't they?
As a Yankee fan, I know I would much rather face the Twins in the first round than the Tigers...even with some offensive woes, the Tigers' starting pitching could be potentially lethal in a short series....the Twins rotation doesn't carry that possibly unhittable quality
sydaud

In Detroit, we're praying that a) We make the playoffs, and b) Leyland gets the rotation right so that the Yankees would have to face Verlander and Jackson twice.
In the playoffs, it is all about power pitching...and the Tigers may catch lightning in a bottle if Verlander and Jackson pitch at their peak.

great way for him to finish of the regular season, but the Yanks really need him now...if he has a big October, he will rescue his entire career and reputation
both teams carry their own threat to the Yanks. Detroit is not that solid all around, but they have a few potentially dominant starters that could wreak havoc in a short series... Miguel Cabrera is getting wasted and fighting his wife, all while going 0-11 in their crucial series over the weekend.
The Twins have a significantly less intimidating rotation, but they are as scrappy as ever, can do all the little things right and have Mauer in the middle of the lineup and Nathan at the end of the bullpen. Obviously, losing Morneau is a major blow though
I'd rather them face the Twins, but I am confident in the Yanks chances this year against any of the teams....I absolutely cannot wait!
I definitely would never say I "know" anything about the playoffs...no matter how great a team is, so many things can happen in October...but I like their chances quite a bit

I was in the bleachers at Yankee Stadium a few years ago for an Angels-Yanks first round series that was eventually won by Los Angeles Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious of Anaheim, but at least the Bombers took the one game I picked up tickets for. Randy Johnson pitched for New York (egad!), and gave up a few early runs, leading an absolutely foolish Angels fan to start waving his spare jersey around in people's faces. He was being sports fan smug, which is certainly not uncommon among backers of any team (Yankees extremely included). But given the climate, and the drunks who'd smuggled in hotel room bottles of booze, it was a bad idea. The minute the home team started their comeback, someone snatched the jersey, tore it to pieces and tried to light the pieces on fire (unsuccessfully). I've seen all sorts of shit go down at Yankee Stadium, and that was one of the most amusing.
Most of the crowd believed they were watching Bernie Williams' last game in pinstripes, and it was really lovely the outpouring of support. He re-signed for one more season after that, but it doesn't diminish what happened that night. I miss that dude in center field. For all the accolades thrown Ken Griffey Jr.'s way (most of them deserved), I always argued that I'd rather have a guy like Bernie on my team. Griffey hit the long ball, had (or "has") a solid career batting average and has made some amazing grabs in the field, but Bernie was just the ultimate team player.
Looking forward to see who the Yanks will be playing.

Here's the deal, I obviously don't like the Yankees and their Championship buying ways but I see them winning the title all the same. They're screwed if Burnett and Petitte flop but they can out-slug pretty much anyone in that bandbox park.

A few bones of contention as an admitted Yankee fan since early childhood...
- If the stadium has a hitter-friendly right field line, it's only an advantage to a team with a lineup loaded with lefties (or, less likely, one with a lot of guys with opposite field power). Since both the home and visiting teams play on the same field, the only place the Yankees would have an advantage is in season homer records.
With 39, Mark Teixeira was tied for first in American League homers. The next closest in the AL on the Yankees was A-Rod, whose 30 tied him for 13th place. Other AL teams with two players in the top 13 in that category were Boston, Texas, Toronto, Minnesota and Tampa Bay.
Teixeira was only tied for sixth-best when the totals of both the AL and NL leaders are included. A-Rod came in tied for 28th.
Okay, as a team, they led all of baseball with 244 on the season, so maybe I'm being a bit of a homer there. But I still maintain that all teams playing in Yankee Stadium - or any stadium - are afforded the same advantages/disadvantages/design quirks as anyone else. That dumb hillock in Houston's center field might be considered more of an advantage for the home team, as they are morefamiliar with having to field balls out there. Likewise, ricochets off the left field wall in Boston might be more easy to navigate for the home team. But those are potential defensive advantages. As a batter, all you have to be is lefty and reasonably strong to have a shot in Yankee Stadium, and that goes for teams in both dugouts on any given day.
- Other teams spend money on their players. Excepting the money laid out on Teixeira/Sabathia/Burnett this past offseason, some key players have come to the Bronx by trade (A-Rod) and even more have actually come up through the team's farm system or spent their entire careers in pinstripes (Jeter, Rivera, Cano, Posada, Cabrera, Chamberlain, Pettitte - not counting his stint in Houston, of course).
The high payroll didn't mean a thing for the Yankees last year, of course, and this year's second and third place spenders (Mets, Cubs) didn't get what they hoped for, either. Nor did Houston or Seattle, the remaining teams in the top ten for salaries in 2009 that didn't make the postseason. The Twins, on the other hand, were in 24th.
For all the money they've spent, the Yankees haven't won the World Series in a decade. Other big ticket teams have (like the fucking Red Sox), but so have other teams that were lower on the food chain.
- The complaints about the stadium design were primarily kept alive over the course of the season by bitter assholes like Mike Lupica, who has spent the better part of the past several years showing utter contempt for the Yankees. Controversy sells papers, especially in a tabloid-friendly city like New York.
- Pinstripes are slimming, and I've just come off a gluttonous birthday weekend.
I know a lot of the above won't make sense to anyone who isn't me, and I'm probably just the worst kind of sports fan there is - a frontrunner who gets his stirrup socks in a twist when people throw stones.
Also - Holy fuck!!! What a 10th inning!!!

See, I told you the Twins would win the AL Central this year.. lol.
What an unfreakinbelievable game and comeback from my boys this season.
At this point, I really don't even care about the outcome against the Yankees tomorrow.
They are the one team in all of baseball that the Twins never seem to match up well with. It's been like that for years, it's become a mental barrier that this team can't seem to shake.
Tomorrow's starters features Duensing (a rookie) vs. Sabathia, who besides being a perennial All-Star, has always dominated the Twins. The Twins will always be vulnerable against quality lefties, 4 out of our top 5 hitters are left-handed, (including Morneau, who's hurt). Couple that w/no rest between tonight's game and tomorrow, and the chances are slim.
Maybe NY will be a lil' stale out of the blocks, having wrapped up the division so early. Who knows...

most teams have starting pitching question marks, it's not really specific to the Dodgers...I know the Yanks have questions, St Louis does after Carpenter/Wainwright, Boston does after Lester/Beckett
Dodgers do have a bunch of quality arms in the bullpen though
if your starters can keep you in games, you definitely have a shot against St Louis...Kershaw better pitch well today, because I'm not sure what Padilla and Billingsley are going to do in St Louis

"The Cardinals won five of seven games, outscoring the Dodgers 31-19. But in the last five, three were decided by one run, another by two runs."
^This is in reference to the regular season this year. I'm a huge Cards fan and of course want them to win, but it will be a competitive series.

And it will be interesting if it comes down to a Dodgers/Phillies NLCS. The Dodgers seem to (at least lately) not have starters that can go more than 6-7 innings, but have a decent bullpen. The Phillies have starters that can go deeper into games, but their bullpen is highly suspect. (This probably explains why Lee got the complete game in game 1 even though he threw at least 110 pitches.) Hopefully the Dodgers can force the Phillies to go to their bullpen often.
And I am a Dodgers fan in PA. I think there's one other person in my workplace so when we play the Phils, I'm fighting the good fight alone, except for a few Mets fans that always cheer against the Phillies.

aside from Colorado, Padilla didn't face any stacked lineups like St Louis or Phil, he only pitched against SF, Col, Ariz, Wash & SD....and has never pitched in the postseason in his career
we'll see how he performs...
Billingsley has looked like he's lacking confidence throughout the second half...first half, his numbers were still pretty dominant, comparable to last season, but after the all star break, he has been very hittable.
none of my Dodger fan friends have any faith in him now, it's interesting how quickly perceptions can change in this game

of course, that was a bad call and it could have helped the Twins even things up
but, to say that it "would have evened that series up" helps to illustrate a lack of understanding of baseball strategy...
if Mauer had been on second instead of first, the Yankees would have walked Jason Kubel next to put runners at first and second to set up the double play with Cuddyer coming up next...the same sequence of events would not have occurred like you are assuming
to assume that all the events would have played out same way ignores the strategy that would have occurred if the call had been made correctly and Mauer would've gotten the leadoff double that he deserved
would I have been pissed if the call had been against my team?? of course I would...but in baseball, things don't happen in a linear fashion that lets you assume anything would have happened the same way if a few small details are changed

I have no idea how this series may turn out...Angels are an absolutely fantastic team. The thing is though, so are the Yankees, and try as they might to hate them, simply because they're the Yankees, people shouldn't underestimate this team. Pretty damn good in all facets of the game.
I'm hearing lots of cockiness out of Angels fans so far. That's a foolish way to root for baseball because it can quickly make you look like an ass. I'm confident that the Yankees can win this, but also know that anything can happen in a short series in baseball, especially when you have 2 such quality teams facing off.
but the Angels own the Yankees!!!!!..ok, well you have fared well against the Yanks in recent history, but the 2009 incarnation of the Yankees is a vastly different and much more well rounded team than any of their squads in the last 5 or 6 years. Yes the Angels have won 2 playoff series against the Yanks, but those were in 2002 and 2005, hardly relevant to this year's series.
I would also venture to say that while the Angels are a very well rounded team in almost all aspects of the game, they do have their own question marks in their bullpen. The back end of the bullpen with Jepsen, Bulger, Fuentes is not nearly as intimidating as Shields/Frankie was.
Angels, go ahead and underestimate the Yankees if you will, I have a feeling things will be much different this year...but that's why they play the games, and I think it will be a great series between 2 very good teams.

He wouldn't need a gem with Philly's offense. Even so, it's not happening on 72 hours rest. The next three games are going to be Blanton > Hamels > Martinez. You can bet on Lee in game 7, should the series get that far.

this is why I never like to make definitive statements regarding any sort of predictions in the postseason
I didn't think the dodgers would have done as bad as they did today. Lee did a lot better today then he did against colorado and that's how I took my stand. Lee was phenomenal, and the dodgers weren't. And for the love of god, Kemp, make something happen this postseason. I'm crossing my fingers for Wolf tomorrow.

I was, I think the Phillies play very good fundamentally sound baseball and I get lost in it whenever I watch them, the Dodgers typically bring out the excitement in them unfortunately, otherwise they are a great way to get a good nap in before going out.

Definitely the Dodgers. You've got you closer out there, your premier shut down reliever up one run with two outs and he blows it. Gets ripped into the gap, both runs score, good luck getting back to LA. It's the dodgers because they needed it more. The Yankees only really need one game in CA to maintain the upper hand in the series.

Oh, yes. After the Giambino stunk up first base for all those years, it's nice to have someone who knows what they're doing in the field.
The Yanks have to be a bit worried now. They had a chance to put the Angels away, and they blew it. Even if Sabathia is as lights out as he's been in the postseason, Burnett isn't a lock by any means. And Pettitte needs to rebound, too.
I know, I'm a typical Yankee fan - The first sign of trouble and I'm already panicking. It should continue to be a good series from here on out.

so many times over the course of the season, I said to myself, "absolutely no way that Giambi made that play".....Teixeira has been fantastic defensively, but he needs to at least calm down at the plate or it's going to have a trickle down effect on the rest of lineup...he's swinging at too many bad pitches and getting himself out...if he's never on, they won't have to pitch to Arod at all the rest of the series..
Swisher specifically came up twice with a man on 3rd and less than 2 outs, popping out to shallow left once and striking out....if he could've done his job, that game is much different yesterday...when they couldn't stretch it beyond 3-0, a late Angels comeback seemed inevitable....I've seen it far too many times there

Darn tootin'!
As a Yankee fan, what I really like is that all the storylines about guys who can't seem to deliver when it matters most have amounted to nothing. A-Rod and Sabathia have been dynamic.
I'm still concerned about Burnett, but with a 3-1 series lead, hopefully he'll settle down a bit on the mound and deliver.

and the yankees outspent the angels by almost $90 million, so whats your point? its just sucks that anytime a really great player becomes a free agent, he usually ends up signing with the yankees. your whole team are fuckin all stars man.
it's always been unfair, not just now. it's just that of course nobody complains when you guys still manage to choke after spending all that money.
what i should have said was that lack of salary cap is the worst thing to happen to baseball. yanks are just the team that is benefiting most from it. guess i should hate the game and not the player.

that is why baseball is a fuckin joke.
Do you really not see a point in the fact that the Angels outspent 18 other MLB teams by AT LEAST $30 million in 2009? That is 2-3, or even more in this depressed free agent market, quality free agents that the Angels could have afforded more than 18 other teams....
let's see....before the 2009 season, for that extra $30 mil...a team could have signed Bobby Abreu($5 mil), Adam Dunn($8 mil), Orlando Hudson ($3.4 mil), Francisco Rodriguez ( $12.3 mil) & Pudge Rodriguez ($1.5 mil)
that could supplement most teams' rosters rather nicely. My point being that the Angels also hold a distinct financial advantage over 18 other MLB teams, but their fans refuse to admit that part of the story. Where is the threshold at which outspending other teams becomes unfair?
Angels fans like to act as if their team is a quaint, folksy little small town team when in fact they draw from the Orange County and Los Angeles markets. LA is the second largest market in the US, only to NYC and Orange County, if it were a nation, would rank as the 31st largest economy in the world. Those are huge markets to draw from and the notion that any team from an area such as this pretending that they can't compete with the big bad bully east coast teams is ridiculous.
I just find it funny when Angels fans want to have it both ways...since 2002, Angels fans have a progressively more obnoxious collective attitude. Becoming exactly what they've always accused Yankees and Red Sox fans of for years. I have heard from thousands of extremely arrogant and obnoxious Angel fans how they "own" the Yankees and the Yankees are a pathetic bunch of overpaid primadonnas that can't win when it counts. (including just last week before the series started)....but now, the Yankees are playing well, so it has become unfair, and the Angels can't possibly compete with the Yankee payroll..just sounds like a weak ass cop out to me.
Don't get me wrong, the system is far from perfect, I am aware of that. The issue is though, the Yankees are doing nothing that any other team in their position wouldn't do if they had the opportunity. Oh no, you take your vast profits and reinvest it in the on field product??? What is wrong with you? Why do you want to put a high quality team on the field that has a good chance to win??? What a bunch of jerks..

Thus why I, as a Twins fan, automatically despises the Yankees.. That team can make any sort of mistake on a player, drop 20 mil on him and still have the resources to replace him with an upgrade if he falters.
That advantage alone makes all the difference in the world. A bad move like that would BURY most other teams for YEARS. I'll never feel sympathy for that team, Fuck The Yankees.
