Anyone who went last year will remember how much fun this is. I wish they were still doing it in Echo Park, as it was great to go to three real venues and see bands performing there rather than going from stage to stage.

Boourns
07-10-2008, 01:42 PM
Could be. I'm already going to attend just from the handful of leaked acts so anything else would be bonus.

Edit: it seems last year's was announced on July 16, a Monday. So maybe next Monday?

I didn't. I figured (correctly) that it was going to be quite rowdy due to some of the bands I wanted to see, like Pissed Jeans, No Age and Jay Reatard. Suffice to say, if I had brought my camera, it would have been broken right quick.

As far as I know there is nothing called, "State Historic Park" in Downtown LA. I think they are just saying that it's going to be held in a state historic in Downtown LA.

The only park I am aware of in Downtown LA is Pershing Square which is kind of small but if they closed the streets off it might work.

Maybe they mean a park near downtown, maybe they will do it in Griffith Park or...

Maybe they will do it in Barnsdall Park, that's where they had the Arthur Fest...

http://www.barnsdall.org/

Or somewhere else, who knows?

I've never been to this festival but reading the blurb I had no idea it was going to involve artists and comedians also.

I also like how it says line up will be posted Mid June...this blurb is from their myspace page.

F Yeah Fest 5 will take place on August 30th & 31st in downtown LA.... For the past four years the festival has taken place in Echo Park. Each year over 50 bands perform, a dozen or so comedians tell jokes and about 40 many artists show their work. The whole thing is curated by Keith Morris from Black Flag & Circle Jerks and myself, Sean Carlson. More information about the fest can be found in the blog section... The line up for this year will be posted in mid June.

Boourns
07-11-2008, 10:51 AM
Mid July is the new mid June.

So previously, the Melvins' Glasshouse show was billed as a pre-Fuck Yeah party, but now they have day 2 the fest listed officially on their myspace:

Any word on who's playing the glass house with the melvins????

bmack86
07-11-2008, 11:36 AM
Well, that means Melvins are headlining day 2 unless they're really trying to beef this up. Last year was really packed both days, so maybe they're banking on the name+the exposure of the LA scene in the past year to draw more people.

Boourns
07-11-2008, 01:04 PM
That could explain the venue change...maybe it will hold more people. I wonder how much of the park is usable for such an event. I read that the whole park is 32 acres but obviously the parts with water and plants and all wouldn't be usable.

And Asobi Seksu has to be playing the second day as well. They will be in Scotland on the 29th. Oooh, that means we get the first American show this year...score!

So I visited that park today.

There is one entrance and very few spaces to park at inside the actual park. Most of the spaces are on Spring St. just outside the park either at a curb or side by side parking against the fence.

When you walk in there is a board with a map of the park and the rules. The glass is worn out so you can barely read it and there is a locked up snack bar (not sure if it ever opens).

There are so many rules in the this park like no photography or filming of any kind among them. Farther in the park the rules are posted legibility.

The board mentioned one event coming there, Cirque Berzerk...

http://www.cirqueberzerk.com/beneath/index.html

The first half of the park is beautiful, green and nicely appointed. The entire second portion of the park is a desolate wasteland that is filled with dying plants, already dead plants, weeds and lots of dirt with dead plants.

It's amazing how nice one half is and how run down the second half of the park is. I am assuming they will have the festival in the run down half because they won't have to worry about killing anything.

Also, even though it is in the pictures, there is no lake. I don't know if it dried up or they had to drain it because of the West Nile virus. What happened to it is really unclear.

The park has a great view of the downtown LA skyline and it's right next to a Gold Line station so it's easily accessible by public transportation.

The only thing is that the gold line track runs across an entire side of the park so it's extremely noisy because the trains pass quite often. 5 passed in the short time I was there.

The weirdest part is that at the far desolate end there is some kind of hobo renegade farm. People are growing crops at the far end and it looks like it was done with out the permission of the city. It's really disorganized, with crops planted all over the place (in the ground and in giant wooden containers). There is no security of any kind so someone who was really hungry could easily take a bunch of food for free.

And of course the restrooms are outhouses.

It's interesting how popular some bands are in LA yet nobody has even heard of them on the east coast. No Age, for example. Since I just recently moved here the only announced artistis I've heard of are the Circle Jerks, Dan Deacon, the Dillinger 4 (and No Age just from Bmack talking about them) yet I'm sure most of them are really popular in LA.

Did anyone see The Melvins at Amoeba? I really, really hope they're announced tomorrow because I missed it. I would like to see Asobi as well.

Bmack you went last year right? about how long did each band get to play for?

Early bands played half an hour, the two pre-headliners had about 45-50 minutes, and then the headliners played for quite awhile. I think Deerhunter did about an hour and ten.

It might have been that short because, on the day I remember, No Age and Jay Reatard were the two sub-headliners, and they typically play short sets.

Circle Jerks are local punk royalty. Dan Deacon's fairly well known. Negative Approach and Polvo are both older bands that are getting back together, with Negative Approach being a really small oldschool hardcore band and Polvo being an early 90s indie guitar rock band. Other than that, they're all pretty small bands, so none of them are that popular.

I wonder how popular No Age are. I feel like I'm in a little bubble where people think the world of them, but that a majority of indie kids don't really know them.

I don't know that it's really been used as a venue before, but count on Boredoms to turn it into something great.

Doubt they're sold out. Check www.brownpapertickets.com

I was checking out Crystal Antlers website today after the Fuck Yeah announcement and they list Boardrum as a show. Unless they're opening, which I'm doubting, then he's probably one of the drummers.

F Yeah Fest 5 will take place on August 30th & 31st in Echo Park.... For the past four years the festival has taken place in Echo Park. Each year over 50 bands perform, a dozen or so comedians tell jokes and about 40 many artists show their work. The whole thing is curated by Keith Morris from Black Flag & Circle Jerks and myself, Sean Carlson.... The bands playing this years fest are No Age, Negative Approach, Fucked Up, Matt & Kim, Glass Candy, Ladyhawk, Two Gallants, Monotonix, Sex/Vid, Mika Miko, High Places, 60 Watt Kid, David Vandervelde, the Strange Boys, War Tapes, Crystal Antlers + so many more. Insane Clown Posse will be doing a spoken word set then going into an oral history of the group. Polvo, Trans Am & the Drones are doing a show the following night that we are putting on. Same with Dan Deacon but that show is a secret. We are also organizing the LA Scavenger Hunt on Sunday, August 31st, the day after the fest. And we are putting on 2 shows with Hot Water Music & Strike Anywhere that weekend... Then we are doing a west coast run of the F Yeah Tour... We are gonna put up a website shortly with all this info. Tickets will be on sale this weekend.

From the official site:

July 29th, 12:31pm

Sadly Insane Clown Posse will not be playing F Yeah Fest. I received a call this morning from their parents saying they will not be traveling to Los Angeles due to a fear of dying in a 5.8 earthquake. We understand. So in turn an ICP cover band by the name Chris Rock vs. the War in Iraq will fill in for them. We promise that they will entertain you.

In other news... we added some bands to the line up... and the ticket info will be posted tonight. Hope you like to laugh cause we sure do.

Love,

I talked to someone who was advertising the fest last night, and they said they're going to do Juggalo facepainting.

Wait, if the first band is supposed to start at 3:15, then why are Monotonix and No Age listed at 11:45 AM?

Cuz the guys who organize this are buzy and miss typeovers.

I'm pretty much hanging out at the Echoplex from the Mae Shi onward. Running up during Matt & Kim to see Crystal Antlers then back down for No Age. Awesome shit.

Matt and Kim are fun, and Crystal Antlers are local to Long Beach, so they play around LA quite a bit, if that helps your decision at all.

I'm seeing Crystal Antlers because Matt and Kim are one of those bands that seeing them once is fun, but it's also enough. And also Crystal Antlers are awesome.

Anyone else make it out? It was a blast.
I got there early to help with the minimal setup, and thus got in for free. We started with Graham Forest, who were acoustic but not folky, and the lead singer had a really deep voice. They were fun for a few songs, but we were antsy waiting for the bands we wanted, so we wandered. Caught most of Witch Hats, who were very noisy and Sonic Youth-esque, in a good way. They rocked, and I'd see them in a few years if they're still around, because by then they should have ironed out some of the kinks. We caught the first song of Nodzzz, and they were poppy rock, but not overly thrilling, so we went back down to see the end of Mannequin Men. They were straight up Ramones style punk from what I could tell, and very enjoyable. I'll definitely try to see them again at some point. The Mae Shi played next, and they were the best show of the night, though I was surprised someone came close. During the Shi's set, a security guard was attacking people for getting too close to the guard rail, choking them and punching, so the crowd surged at him until he got scared and ran off. THis prompted the crowd to retort, "The Mae Shi beat the police!" My recommendation would be to see these guys now before they destroy the planet with their miraculous live show. Also, the Mae Sheet is back, and better than ever. For those of you in the know, that's a good thing. After them, we caught all of Past Lives, which is the new project of the less squealy Blood Brother. They were fantastic, proggy, weird and out there. Vaguely psychedelic, and his voice reached into the sky. We watched a song from Paint it Black, but were too hungry, so got dinner instead and made it back in time for Mika Miko. They were amped tonight, really boosting the energy, and the crowd responded. Basically, all of the conquering Smell bands that played tonight (Mae Shi, Mika Miko, Abe Vigoda, No Age) had a perfect crowd-tons of energy, everybody going nuts, and everybody loving it. Mika Miko were short and sweet, and all the better for it, as they left everyone happy but wanting more. We then went and saw a little bit of Abe Vigoda's set. They were good, but the sound in the Echo was too loud almost all night, so it dampened their set somewhat. We decided to check out Triumph of Lethargy since they were playing in the Annex, which has never acted as a venue before. It was a tiny room, and you couldn't see the band at all. They were okay, but nothing worth staying, so we walked to get a drink instead. We got back just as Fucked Up was starting. These guys deserve to be huge. The lead singer is a huge fat dude with a shaved head and tattoos, and he seems like a teddy bear when he's talking; when he's singing, however, he becomes a madman. These guys were the Pissed Jeans of this year; full of rage, violence and energy. They got the crowd riled, and people were flying all over the place. They ended with the lead singer jumping into the crowd and bear hugging anyone in sight. I got a hug and told him how great they were, and I meant it. Negative Approach played next. I had heard that it's not the complete band from the original lineup, but they brought the old school hardcore like nobody's business. Without a doubt, that was the best hardcore punk show I've ever seen. People were climbing the light rigs and jumping into the crowd, turning the whole place into a pit and generally creating mayhem. I had a huge smile on my face the whole time. It seemed that everyone who was down there to see them was really really happy with the set, and with the energy they had, I couldn't blame them. After Fucked Up and Negative Approach, High Places was a very necessary cool down. My friends all didn't like them, and it was the worst of the three times that I've seen them due to sound issues, but they were still good. From Stardust to Sentience is a perfect song, and it sounds great live. They need to learn to close with that, and they'll be masterful. Glass Candy were after them. I remembered liking them when I saw them open for Architecture in Helsinki, and Beat Box is a really good album, so I was excited. They really turned it up and wound up with a very close second best set of the fest. Two songs in, the power that ran Johnny Jewel's keyboards went out. Rather than spending time trying to figure it out and losing the energy of the set, he switched to his preprogrammed beat box and did a song while the tech guys figured it out. They kept ramping up the energy, and when the keyboards came back, everybody in the crowd was in the palm of their hand. They had so many people dancing, and just sounded fantastic. Also, they threw out copies of their album to the audience. Not just a few, but well over 100. It seemed like they had enough for every other person at the show. I thought that was awesome. See Glass Candy. It'll be worth it. After them, I hightailed it upstairs to catch Crystal Antlers, who were scheduled to be starting as soon sas Glass Candy ended pretty much. Instead, I got up there to hear two songs from Ladyhawk, who were playing over schedule. I didn't like them much. They seemed boring. Crystal Antlers, on the other hand, had a great psychedelic vibe. Their percussionist, who goes by the name Sexual Chocolate, was a madman dancing, and their brief set was high on grooves and textures, and low on dull parts. I want to see them play their own set. I got downstairs in time to catch the last song from Matt and Kim, and, while the crowd was digging it, I was glad I had seen Crystal Antlers instead. No Age closed the Echoplex out in style. The crowd was eating it up, and they responded in kind, having a sort of homecoming, as they've been on the road so consistently this year. They closed with a few covers, one of G.G. Allin, one of Gun Club and one of the Misfits. It wasn't the best No Age show I've seen, but I was tired by that point, and rather beat up, so I wasn't fully in the mood either.

Go to F Yeah fest next year. It's so much fun, and you'll see tons of great bands.

all i can say is that monotonix put on the craziest show i've ever seen. they not only rock louder and harder than most, but their live antics should have gotten them and everyone in attendance arrested last night. it is imperative that everyone to see them tonight after dan deacon goes on.

Well, shit, that's in about 50 minutes, I'd wager. People should get out there quick. I decided I'm still too bruised and beaten from the Fucked Up/Negative Approach 1-2 to really do anything of consequence.

I was going to drive to Pomona to see them but ticketmaster damn near doubles the price and I didn't want to drive 30 minutes to find out that it was sold out. I just found out that they're playing 2 nights at the Troubadour though so fuck yeah!

Damn. I moved away from LA at the wrong time, even though if I were still there, I'd have probably been too broke to go anyway. I've had to miss this every year for various stupid reasons and it always bums me out. At least cool small scale stuff like this is happening. It seems to get lost in the shuffle of the bigger corporate sponsored festivals but these are the types of bands that are way more fun to see these days. And Monotonix are great stupid fun. I accidentally caught them at The Smell earlier this year and had a great time. The singer is a mad man. All the Gogol fans should take note.
